Resonant Spin Hall Effect of Light in Random Photonic Arrays

It has been recently shown that the coherent component of light propagating in transversally disordered media, the so-called coherent mode, exhibits an optical spin Hall effect (SHE). In non-resonant materials, however, this phenomenon shows up at a spatial scale much larger than the mean free path, making its observation challenging due to the exponential attenuation of the coherent mode. Here, we show that in disordered photonic arrays exhibiting Mie resonances, the SHE on the contrary appears at a scale smaller than the mean free path if one operates in the close vicinity of the lowest transverse-magnetic resonance of the array. In combination with a weak measurement, this gives rise to a giant SHE that should be observable in optically-thin media. Furthermore, we show that by additionally exploiting the cooperative emission of a flash of light following the abrupt extinction of the incoming beam, one can achieve a time-dependent SHE, observable at large optical thickness as well.

Tailoring propagation of light via spin-orbit interactions in correlated disorder

Based on the fundamental interplay between spatial wavefronts and polarization degrees of freedom, spin-orbit interactions (SOI) of light constitute a novel tool for optical control at the nanoscale. While well described in simple geometries, SOI of light in disordered environments, where only a partial knowledge of the material's microscopy is available, remain largely unexplored. Here, we show that in transversally random media, the disorder correlation can be exploited to tailor a variety of trajectories for ballistic beams via SOI. In particular, we unveil the existence of an oscillating spin Hall effect, stemming from the deformation of the phase of the wavefront due to SOI. In combination with a weak measurement, this phenomenon can also be maximized by an optimal choice of the disorder correlation.

Spin drag and fast response in a quantum mixture of atomic gases

By applying a sudden perturbation to one of the components of a mixture of two quantum fluids, we explore the effect on the motion of the second component on a short time scale. By implementing perturbation theory, we prove that for short times the response of the second component is fixed by the energy weighted moment of the crossed dynamic structure factor (crossed f-sum rule). We also show that by properly monitoring the time duration of the perturbation it is possible to identify peculiar fast spin drag regimes, which are sensitive to the interaction effects in the Hamiltonian. Special focus is given to the case of coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, interacting Bose mixtures exhibiting the Andreev-Bashkin effect, normal Fermi liquids and the polaron problem. The relevant excitations of the system contributing to the spin drag effect are identified and the contribution of the low frequency gapless excitations to the f-sum rule in the density and spin channels is explicitly calculated employing the proper macroscopic dynamic theories. Both spatially periodic and Galilean boost perturbations are considered.
