Double Machine Learning for Time Series

We modify the Double Machine Learning estimator to broaden its applicability to macroeconomic time-series settings. A deterministic cross-fitting step, termed Reverse Cross-Fitting, leverages the time-reversibility of stationary series to improve sample utilization and efficiency. We detail and prove the conditions under which the estimator is asymptotically valid. We then demonstrate, through simulations, that its performance remains valid in realistic finite samples and is robust to model misspecification and violations of assumptions, such as heteroskedasticity. In high dimensions, predictive metrics for tuning nuisance learners do not generally minimize bias in the causal score. We propose a calibration rule targeting a "Goldilocks zone", a region of tuning parameters that delivers stable, partialled-out signals and reduced small-sample bias. Finally, we apply our procedure to residualized Local Projections to estimate the dynamic effects of a rise in Tier 1 regulatory capital. The results underscore the usefulness of the methodology for inference in macroeconomic applications.

Carbon-Penalised Portfolio Insurance Strategies in a Stochastic Factor Model with Partial Information

Given the increasing importance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, particularly carbon emissions, we investigate optimal proportional portfolio insurance (PPI) strategies accounting for carbon footprint reduction. PPI strategies enable investors to mitigate downside risk while retaining the potential for upside gains. This paper aims to determine the multiplier of the PPI strategy to maximise the expected utility of the terminal cushion, where the terminal cushion is penalised proportionally to the realised volatility of stocks issued by firms operating in carbon-intensive sectors. We model the risky assets' dynamics using geometric Brownian motions whose drift rates are modulated by an unobservable common stochastic factor to capture market-specific or economy-wide state variables that are typically not directly observable. Using classical stochastic filtering theory, we formulate a suitable optimization problem and solve it for CRRA utility function. We characterise optimal carbon penalised PPI strategies and optimal value functions under full and partial information and quantify the loss of utility due incomplete information. Finally, we carry a numerical analysis showing that the proposed strategy reduces carbon emission intensity without compromising financial performance.

Forecasting Cryptocurrencies Log-Returns: a LASSO-VAR and Sentiment Approach

Cryptocurrencies have become a trendy topic recently, primarily due to their disruptive potential and reports of unprecedented returns. In addition, academics increasingly acknowledge the predictive power of Social Media in many fields and, more specifically, for financial markets and economics. In this paper, we leverage the predictive power of Twitter and Reddit sentiment together with Google Trends indexes and volume to forecast the log returns of ten cryptocurrencies. Specifically, we consider $Bitcoin$, $Ethereum$, $Tether$, $Binance Coin$, $Litecoin$, $Enjin Coin$, $Horizen$, $Namecoin$, $Peercoin$, and $Feathercoin$. We evaluate the performance of LASSO-VAR using daily data from January 2018 to January 2022. In a 30 days recursive forecast, we can retrieve the correct direction of the actual series more than 50% of the time. We compare this result with the main benchmarks, and we see a 10% improvement in Mean Directional Accuracy (MDA). The use of sentiment and attention variables as predictors increase significantly the forecast accuracy in terms of MDA but not in terms of Root Mean Squared Errors. We perform a Granger causality test using a post-double LASSO selection for high-dimensional VARs. Results show no "causality" from Social Media sentiment to cryptocurrencies returns
