Nonequilibrium critical dynamics of the ferromagnetic Ising model with Kawasaki dynamics

We investigate the temporal evolution of a ferromagnetic system of Ising spins evolving under Kawasaki dynamics from a random initial condition, in spatial dimensions one and two. We examine in detail the asymptotic behaviour of the two-time correlation and response functions. The linear response is measured without applying a field, using a recently proposed algorithm. For the chain at vanishingly small temperature, we introduce an accelerated dynamics which has the virtue of projecting the system into the asymptotic scaling regime. This allows us to revisit critically previous works on the behaviour at large time of the two-time autocorrelation and response functions. We also analyse the case of the two-dimensional system at criticality. A comparison with Glauber dynamics is performed in both dimensionalities, in order to underline the similarities and differences in the phenomenology of the two dynamics.

Instability of one-step replica-symmetry-broken phase in satisfiability problems

We reconsider the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking (1RSB) solutions of two random combinatorial problems: k-XORSAT and k-SAT. We present a general method for establishing the stability of these solutions with respect to further steps of replica-symmetry breaking. Our approach extends the ideas of [A.Montanari and F. Ricci-Tersenghi, Eur.Phys.J. B 33, 339 (2003)] to more general combinatorial problems. It turns out that 1RSB is always unstable at sufficiently small clauses density alpha or high energy. In particular, the recent 1RSB solution to 3-SAT is unstable at zero energy for alpha< alpha_m, with alpha_m\approx 4.153. On the other hand, the SAT-UNSAT phase transition seems to be correctly described within 1RSB.

Measuring the fluctuation-dissipation ratio in glassy systems with no perturbing field

A method is presented for measuring the integrated response in Ising spin system without applying any perturbing field. Large-scale simulations are performed in order to show how the method works. Very precise measurements of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio are presented for 3 different Ising models: the 2-dimensional ferromagnetic model, the mean-field diluted 3-spin model, and the 3-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model.

Bicoloring Random Hypergraphs

We study the problem of bicoloring random hypergraphs, both numerically and analytically. We apply the zero-temperature cavity method to find analytical results for the phase transitions (dynamic and static) in the 1RSB approximation. These points appear to be in agreement with the results of the numerical algorithm. In the second part, we implement and test the Survey Propagation algorithm for specific bicoloring instances in the so called HARD-SAT phase.

Aging dynamics of heterogeneous spin models

We investigate numerically the dynamics of three different spin models in the aging regime. Each of these models is meant to be representative of a distinct class of aging behavior: coarsening systems, discontinuous spin glasses, and continuous spin glasses. In order to study dynamic heterogeneities induced by quenched disorder, we consider single-spin observables for a given disorder realization. In some simple cases we are able to provide analytical predictions for single-spin response and correlation functions. The results strongly depend upon the model considered. It turns out that, by comparing the slow evolution of a few different degrees of freedom, one can distinguish between different dynamic classes. As a conclusion we present the general properties which can be induced from our results, and discuss their relation with thermometric arguments.

On the nature of the low-temperature phase in discontinuous mean-field spin glasses

The low-temperature phase of discontinuous mean-field spin glasses is generally described by a one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) Ansatz. The Gardner transition, i.e. a very-low-temperature phase transition to a full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB) phase, is often regarded as an inessential, and somehow exotic phenomenon. In this paper we show that the metastable states which are relevant for the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of such systems are always in a FRSB phase. The only exceptions are (to the best of our knowledge) the p-spin spherical model and the random energy model (REM). We also discuss the consequences of our results for aging dynamics and for local search algorithms in hard combinatorial problems.

Direct sampling of complex landscapes at low temperatures: the three-dimensional +/-J Ising spin glass

A method is presented, which allows to sample directly low-temperature configurations of glassy systems, like spin glasses. The basic idea is to generate ground states and low lying excited configurations using a heuristic algorithm. Then, with the help of microcanonical Monte Carlo simulations, more configurations are found, clusters of configurations are determined and entropies evaluated. Finally equilibrium configuration are randomly sampled with proper Gibbs-Boltzmann weights. The method is applied to three-dimensional Ising spin glasses with +- J interactions and temperatures T<=0.5. The low-temperature behavior of this model is characterized by evaluating different overlap quantities, exhibiting a complex low-energy landscape for T>0, while the T=0 behavior appears to be less complex.

A microscopic description of the aging dynamics: fluctuation-dissipation relations, effective temperature and heterogeneities

We consider the dynamics of a diluted mean-field spin glass model in the aging regime. The model presents a particularly rich heterogeneous behavior. In order to catch this behavior, we perform a **spin-by-spin analysis** for a **given disorder realization**. The results compare well with the outcome of a static calculation which uses the ``survey propagation'' algorithm of Mezard, Parisi, and Zecchina [Sciencexpress 10.1126/science.1073287 (2002)]. We thus confirm the connection between statics and dynamics at the level of single degrees of freedom. Moreover, working with single-site quantities, we can introduce a new response-vs-correlation plot, which clearly shows how heterogeneous degrees of freedom undergo coherent structural rearrangements. Finally we discuss the general scenario which emerges from our work and (possibly) applies to more realistic glassy models. Interestingly enough, some features of this scenario can be understood recurring to thermometric considerations.

The Dynamic Phase Transition for Decoding Algorithms

The state-of-the-art error correcting codes are based on large random constructions (random graphs, random permutations, ...) and are decoded by linear-time iterative algorithms. Because of these features, they are remarkable examples of diluted mean-field spin glasses, both from the static and from the dynamic points of view. We analyze the behavior of decoding algorithms using the mapping onto statistical-physics models. This allows to understand the intrinsic (i.e. algorithm independent) features of this behavior.

Zero Temperature Properties of RNA Secondary Structures

We analyze different microscopic RNA models at zero temperature. We discuss both the most simple model, that suffers a large degeneracy of the ground state, and models in which the degeneracy has been remove, in a more or less severe manner. We calculate low-energy density of states using a coupling perturbing method, where the ground state of a modified Hamiltonian, that repels the original ground state, is determined. We evaluate scaling exponents starting from measurements of overlaps and energy differences. In the case of models without accidental degeneracy of the ground state we are able to clearly establish the existence of a glassy phase with $θ\simeq 1/3$.

Glassy dynamics near zero temperature

We numerically study finite-dimensional spin glasses at low and zero temperature, finding evidences for (i) strong time/space heterogeneities, (ii) spontaneous time scale separation and (iii) power law distributions of flipping times. Using zero temperature dynamics we study blocking, clustering and persistence phenomena.

Ultrametricity in 3D Edwards-Anderson spin glasses

We perform an accurate test of Ultrametricity in the aging dynamics of the three dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass. Our method consists in considering the evolution in parallel of two identical systems constrained to have fixed overlap. This turns out to be a particularly efficient way to study the geometrical relations between configurations at distant large times. Our findings strongly hint towards dynamical ultrametricity in spin glasses, while this is absent in simpler aging systems with domain growth dynamics. A recently developed theory of linear response in glassy systems allows to infer that dynamical ultrametricity implies the same property at the level of equilibrium states.

Two time scales and FDT violation in a Finite Dimensional Model for Structural Glasses

We study the breakdown of fluctuation-dissipation relations between time dependent density-density correlations and associated responses following a quench in chemical potential in the Frustrated Ising Lattice Gas. The corresponding slow dynamics is characterized by two well separated time scales which are characterized by a constant value of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio. This result is particularly relevant taking into account that activated processes dominate the long time dynamics of the system.

On the origin of ultrametricity

In this paper we show that in systems where the probability distribution of the the overlap is non trivial in the infinity volume limit, the property of ultrametricity can be proved in general starting from two very simple and natural assumptions: each replica is equivalent to the others (replica equivalence or stochastic stability) and all the mutual information about a pair of equilibrium configurations is encoded in their mutual distance or overlap (separability or overlap equivalence).

Generalized off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations in random Ising systems

We show that the numerical method based on the off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation does work and is very useful and powerful in the study of disordered systems which show a very slow dynamics. We have verified that it gives the right information in the known cases (diluted ferromagnets and random field Ising model far from the critical point) and we used it to obtain more convincing results on the frozen phase of finite-dimensional spin glasses. Moreover we used it to study the Griffiths phase of the diluted and the random field Ising models.

On the Dynamics of the 4d Spin Glass in a magnetic field

We study the four dimensional Gaussian spin glass in presence of a magnetic field. Using off-equilibrium numerical simulations we have found that the probability distribution of the overlaps is built in the same way as that of the Mean Field approximation with replica symmetry breaking. Finally we have studied the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in presence of magnetic field.

Violation of the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem in Finite Dimensional Spin Glasses

We study the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the three and four dimensional Gaussian Ising spin glasses using on and off equilibrium simulations. We have characterized numerically the function X(C) that determine the violation and we have studied its scaling properties. Moreover we have computed the function x(C) which characterize the breaking of the replica symmetry directly from equilibrium simulations. The two functions are numerically equal and in this way we have established that the conjectured connection between the violation of fluctuation dissipation theorem in the off-equilibrium dynamics and the replica symmetry breaking at equilibrium holds for finite dimensional spin glasses. These results point to a spin glass phase with spontaneously broken replica symmetry in finite dimensional spin glasses.

Mean Field Dynamical Exponents in Finite-Dimensional Ising Spin Glass

We report the value of the dynamical critical exponent z for the six dimensional Ising spin glass, measured in three different ways: from the behavior of the energy and the susceptibility with the Monte Carlo time and by studying the overlap-overlap correlation function as a function of the space and time. All three results are in a very good agreement with the Mean Field prediction z=4. Finally we have studied numerically the remanent magnetization in 6 and 8 dimensions and we have compared it with the behavior observed in the SK model, that we have computed analytically.
