Non-algebraic geometrically trivial cohomology classes over finite fields

We give the first examples of smooth projective varieties $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ admitting a non-algebraic torsion $\ell$-adic cohomology class of degree $4$ which vanishes over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}$. We use them to show that two versions of the integral Tate conjecture over $\mathbb{F}$ are not equivalent to one another and that a fundamental exact sequence of Colliot-Thélène and Kahn does not necessarily split. Some of our examples have dimension $4$, and are the first known examples of fourfolds with non-vanishing $H^{3}_{\text{nr}}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{2}(2))$.

Two coniveau filtrations and algebraic equivalence over finite fields

We extend the basic theory of the coniveau and strong coniveau filtrations to the $\ell$-adic setting. By adapting the examples of Benoist--Ottem to the $\ell$-adic context, we show that the two filtrations differ over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not $2$. When the base field $\mathbb{F}$ is finite, we show that the equality of the two filtrations over the algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{F}}$ has some consequences for algebraic equivalence for codimension-$2$ cycles over $\mathbb{F}$. As an application, we prove that the third unramified cohomology group $H^{3}_{\text{nr}}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}/\mathbb{Z}_{\ell})$ vanishes for a large class of rationally chain connected threefolds $X$ over $\mathbb{F}$, confirming a conjecture of Colliot-Thélène and Kahn.

Quotient singularities in the Grothendieck ring of varieties

Let $G$ be a finite group, $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety with a faithful $G$-action, and $Y$ be a resolution of singularities of $X/G$. Larsen and Lunts asked whether $[X/G]-[Y]$ is divisible by $[\mathbb{A}^1]$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. We show that the answer is negative if $BG$ is not stably rational and affirmative if $G$ is abelian. The case when $X=Z^n$ for some smooth projective variety $Z$ and $G=S_n$ acts by permutation of the factors is of particular interest. We make progress on it by showing that $[Z^n/S_n]-[Z\langle n\rangle / S_n]$ is divisible by $[\mathbb{A}^1]$, where $Z\langle n\rangle$ is Ulyanov's polydiagonal compactification of the $n$-th configuration space of $Z$.

Varieties over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ with infinite Chow groups modulo almost all primes

Let $E$ be the Fermat cubic curve over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. In 2002, Schoen proved that the group $CH^2(E^3)/\ell$ is infinite for all primes $\ell\equiv 1\pmod 3$. We show that $CH^2(E^3)/\ell$ is infinite for all prime numbers $\ell> 5$. This gives the first example of a smooth projective variety $X$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ such that $CH^2(X)/\ell$ is infinite for all but at most finitely many primes $\ell$. A key tool is a recent theorem of Farb--Kisin--Wolfson, whose proof uses the prismatic cohomology of Bhatt--Scholze.

Degenerate fourfold Massey products over arbitrary fields

We prove that, for all fields $F$ of characteristic different from $2$ and all $a,b,c\in F^\times$, the mod $2$ Massey product $\langle a,b,c,a \rangle$ vanishes as soon as it is defined. For every field $F_0$, we construct a field $F$ containing $F_0$ and $a,b,c,d\in F^\times$ such that $\langle a,b,c \rangle$ and $\langle b,c,d \rangle$ vanish but $\langle a,b,c,d \rangle$ is not defined. As a consequence, we answer a question of Positselski by constructing the first examples of fields containing all roots of unity and such that the mod $2$ cochain DGA of the absolute Galois group is not formal.

Non-formality of Galois cohomology modulo all primes

Let $p$ be a prime number and let $F$ be a field of characteristic different from $p$. We prove that there exist a field extension $L/F$ and $a,b,c,d$ in $L^{\times}$ such that $(a,b)=(b,c)=(c,d)=0$ in $\mathrm{Br}(F)[p]$ but $\langle a,b,c,d\rangle$ is not defined over $L$. Thus the Strong Massey Vanishing Conjecture at the prime $p$ fails for $L$, and the cochain differential graded ring $C^*(Γ_L,\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$ of the absolute Galois group $Γ_L$ of $L$ is not formal. This answers a question of Positselski.

On the Massey Vanishing Conjecture and Formal Hilbert 90

Let $p$ be a prime number, let $G$ be a profinite group, let $θ\colon G\to \mathbb{Z}_p^{\times}$ be a continuous character, and for all $n\geq 1$ write $\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}(1)$ for the twist of $\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}$ by the $G$-action. Suppose that $(G,θ)$ satisfies a formal version of Hilbert's Theorem 90: for all open subgroups $H\subset G$ and every $n\geq 1$, the map $H^1(H,\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}(1))\to H^1(H,\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}(1))$ is surjective. We show that the Massey Vanishing Conjecture for triple Massey products and some degenerate fourfold Massey products holds for $G$. A key step in our proof is the construction of a Hilbert 90 module for $(G,θ)$: a discrete $G$-module $M$ which plays the role of the Galois module $F_{\text{sep}}^\times$ for the absolute Galois group of a field $F$ of characteristic different from $p$.

Non-injectivity of the cycle class map in continuous $\ell$-adic cohomology

Jannsen asked whether the rational cycle class map in continuous $\ell$-adic cohomology is injective, in every codimension for all smooth projective varieties over a field of finite type over the prime field. As recently pointed out by Schreieder, the integral version of Jannsen's question is also of interest. We exhibit several examples showing that the answer to the integral version is negative in general. Our examples also have consequences for the coniveau filtration on Chow groups and the transcendental Abel-Jacobi map constructed by Schreieder.

The behavior of essential dimension under specialization

Let $A$ be a discrete valuation ring with generic point $η$ and closed point $s$. We show that in a family of torsors over $\operatorname{Spec}(A)$, the essential dimension of the torsor above $s$ is less than or equal to the essential dimension of the torsor above $η$. We give two applications of this result, one in mixed characteristic, the other in equal characteristic.

Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence and Hodge cohomology of classifying stacks

Let $G$ be a smooth connected reductive group over a field $k$ and $Γ$ be a central subgroup of $G$. We construct Eilenberg-Moore-type spectral sequences converging to the Hodge and de Rham cohomology of $B(G/Γ)$. As an application, building upon work of Toda and using Totaro's inequality, we show that for all $m\geq 0$ the Hodge and de Rham cohomology algebras of the classifying stacks $B\mathrm{PGL}_{4m+2}$ and $B\mathrm{PSO}_{4m+2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are isomorphic to the singular $\mathbb{F}_2$-cohomology of the classifying space of the corresponding Lie group. From this we obtain a full description of $H^{>0}(\mathrm{GL}_{4m+2}, \operatorname{Sym}^j(\mathfrak{pgl}_{4m+2}^\vee))$ and $H^{>0}(\mathrm{SO}_{4m+2}, \operatorname{Sym}^j(\mathfrak{pso}_{4m+2}^\vee))$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$.

The behavior of essential dimension under specialization II

Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group over a field. We show that, under mild assumptions, in a family of primitive generically free $G$-varieties over a base variety $B$ the essential dimension of the geometric fibers may drop on a countable union of Zariski closed subsets of $B$ and stays constant away from this countable union. We give several applications of this result.

Sur la conjecture de Tate entière pour le produit d'une courbe et d'une surface $CH_{0}$-triviale sur un corps fini

We investigate a strong version of the integral Tate conjecture for 1-cycles on the product of a curve and a surface over a finite field, under the assumption that the surface is geometrically $CH_0$-trivial. By this we mean that over any algebraically closed field extension, the degree map on the zero-dimensional Chow group of the surface is an isomorphism. This applies to Enriques surfaces. When the Néron-Severi group has no torsion, we recover earlier results of A. Pirutka. The results rely on a detailed study of the third unramified cohomology group of specific products of varieties.

On the motivic class of an algebraic group

Let $F$ be a field of characteristic zero admitting a biquadratic field extension. We give an example of a torus $G$ over $F$ whose classifying stack $BG$ is stably rational and such that $\{BG\}\{G\}\neq 1$ in the Grothendieck ring of algebraic stacks over $F$. We also give an example of a finite étale group scheme $A$ over $F$ such that $BA$ is stably rational and $\{BA\}\neq 1$.

Steenrod operations on the de Rham cohomology of algebraic stacks

Building up on work of Epstein, May and Drury, we define and investigate the mod $p$ Steenrod operations on the de Rham cohomology of smooth algebraic stacks over a field of characteristic $p>0$. We then compute the action of the operations on the de Rham cohomology of classifying stacks for finite groups, connected reductive groups for which $p$ is not a torsion prime, and (special) orthogonal groups when $p=2$.
