Joint statistics of acceleration and vorticity in fully developed turbulence

We report results from a high resolution numerical study of fluid particles transported by a fully developed turbulent flow. Single particle trajectories were followed for a time range spanning more than three decades, from less than a tenth of the Kolmogorov time-scale up to one large-eddy turnover time. We present results concerning acceleration statistics and the statistics of trapping by vortex filaments conditioned to the local values of vorticity and enstrophy. We distinguish two different behaviors between the joint statistics of vorticity and centripetal acceleration or vorticity and longitudinal acceleration.

Lattice Boltzmann method at finite-Knudsen numbers

A modified lattice Boltzmann model with a stochastic relaxation mechanism mimicking "virtual'' collisions between free-streaming particles and solid walls is introduced. This modified scheme permits to compute plane channel flows in satisfactory agreement with analytical results over a broad spectrum of Knudsen numbers, ranging from the hydrodynamic regime, all the way to quasi-free flow regimes up to Kn 30.

Rayleigh and Prandtl number scaling in the bulk of Rayleigh-Benard turbulence

The Rayleigh (Ra) and Prandtl (Pr) number scaling of the Nusselt number Nu, the Reynolds number Re, the temperature fluctuations, and the kinetic and thermal dissipation rates is studied for (numerical) homogeneous Rayleigh-Benard turbulence, i.e., Rayleigh-Benard turbulence with periodic boundary conditions in all directions and a volume forcing of the temperature field by a mean gradient. This system serves as model system for the bulk of Rayleigh-Benard flow and therefore as model for the so called ``ultimate regime of thermal convection''. With respect to the Ra dependence of Nu and Re we confirm our earlier results \cite{loh03} which are consistent with the Kraichnan theory \cite{kra62} and the Grossmann-Lohse (GL) theory \cite{gro00,gro01,gro02,gro04}, which both predict $Nu \sim Ra^{1/2}$ and $Re \sim Ra^{1/2}$. However the Pr dependence within these two theories is different. Here we show that the numerical data are consistent with the GL theory $Nu \sim Pr^{1/2}$, $Re \sim Pr^{-1/2}$. For the thermal and kinetic dissipation rates we find $\eps_θ/(κΔ^{2}L^{-2}) \sim (Re Pr)^{0.87}$ and $\eps_u/(ν^3 L^{-4}) \sim Re^{2.77}$, also both consistent with the GL theory, whereas the temperature fluctuations do not depend on Ra and Pr. Finally, the dynamics of the heat transport is studied and put into the context of a recent theoretical finding by Doering et al. \cite{doe05}.

Effects of forcing in three dimensional turbulent flows

We present the results of a numerical investigation of three-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, stirred by a random forcing with a power law spectrum, $E_f(k)\sim k^{3-y}$. Numerical simulations are performed at different resolutions up to $512^3$. We show that at varying the spectrum slope $y$, small-scale turbulent fluctuations change from a {\it forcing independent} to a {\it forcing dominated} statistics. We argue that the critical value separating the two behaviours, in three dimensions, is $y_c=4$. When the statistics is forcing dominated, for $y y_c$, we find the same anomalous scaling measured in flows forced only at large scales. We connect these results with the issue of {\it universality} in turbulent flows.

Intermittency in Turbulence: computing the scaling exponents in shell models

We discuss a stochastic closure for the equation of motion satisfied by multi-scale correlation functions in the framework of shell models of turbulence. We give a systematic procedure to calculate the anomalous scaling exponents of structure functions by using the exact constraints imposed by the equation of motion. We present an explicit calculation for fifth order scaling exponent at varying the free parameter entering in the non-linear term of the model. The same method applied to the case of shell models for Kraichnan passive scalar provides a connection between the concept of zero-modes and time-dependent cascade processes.

The ultimate state of thermal convection

The ultimate regime of thermal convection, the so called Kraichnan regime (R. H. Kraichnan, Phys. Fluids 5, 1374 (1962)), hitherto has been elusive. Here, numerical evidence for that regime is presented by performing simulations of the bulk of turbulence only, eliminating the thermal and kinetic boundary layers and replacing them by periodic boundary conditions.

Intermittency in Turbulence: Multiplicative random process in space and time

We present a simple stochastic algorithm for generating multiplicative processes with multiscaling both in space and in time. With this algorithm we are able to reproduce a synthetic signal with the same space and time correlation as the one coming from shell models for turbulence and the one coming from a turbulent velocity field in a quasi-Lagrangian reference frame.

Evidences of Bolgiano scaling in 3D Rayleigh-Benard convection

We present new results from high-resolution high-statistics direct numerical simulations of a tri-dimensional convective cell. We test the fundamental physical picture of the presence of both a Bolgiano-like and a Kolmogorov-like regime. We find that the dimensional predictions for these two distinct regimes (characterized respectively by an active and passive role of the temperature field) are consistent with our measurements.

Anisotropic Homogeneous Turbulence: hierarchy and intermittency of scaling exponents in the anisotropic sectors

We present the first measurements of anisotropic statistical fluctuations in perfectly homogeneous turbulent flows. We address both problems of intermittency in anisotropic sectors and hierarchical ordering of anisotropies on a direct numerical simulation of a three dimensional random Kolmogorov flow. We achieved an homogeneous and anisotropic statistical ensemble by randomly shifting the forcing phases. We observe high intermittency as a function of the order of the velocity correlation within each fixed anisotropic sector and a hierarchical organization of scaling exponents at fixed order of the velocity correlation at changing the anisotropic sector.

Decaying and kicked turbulence in a shell model

Decaying and periodically kicked turbulence are analyzed within the GOY shell model, to allow for sufficiently large scaling regimes. Energy is transfered towards the small scales in intermittent bursts. Nevertheless, mean field arguments are sufficient to account for the ensemble averaged energy decay E(t) t^{-2} or the parameter dependences for the ensemble averaged total energy in the kicked case. Within numerical precision, the inertial subrange intermittency remains the same, whether the system is forced or decaying.

Probing structures in channel flow through SO(3) and SO(2) decomposition

SO(3) and SO(2) decompositions of numerical channel flow turbulence are performed. The decompositions are used to probe, characterize, and quantify anisotropic structures in the flow. Close to the wall the anisotropic modes are dominant and reveal the flow structures. The SO(3) decomposition does not converge for large scales as expected. However, in the shear buffer layer it also does not converge for small scales, reflecting the lack of small scales isotropization in that part of the channel flow.

FFT for the APE Parallel Computer

We present a parallel FFT algorithm for SIMD systems following the `Transpose Algorithm' approach. The method is based on the assignment of the data field onto a 1-dimensional ring of systolic cells. The systolic array can be universally mapped onto any parallel system. In particular for systems with next-neighbour connectivity our method has the potential to improve the efficiency of matrix transposition by use of hyper-systolic communication. We have realized a scalable parallel FFT on the APE100/Quadrics massively parallel computer, where our implementation is part of a 2-dimensional hydrodynamics code for turbulence studies. A possible generalization to 4-dimensional FFT is presented, having in mind QCD applications.
