Reducibility of higher-order to pairwise interactions: Social impact models on hypergraphs

We show that a general class of social impact models with higher-order interactions on hypergraphs can be exactly reduced to an equivalent model with pairwise interactions on a weighted projected network. This reduction is made by a mapping that preserves the microscopic probabilities of changing the state of the nodes. As a particular case, we introduce hypergraph-voter models, for which we compute the weights of the projected network both analytically and numerically across several hypergraph ensembles, and we characterize their ordering dynamics through simulations of both higher-order and reduced dynamics. For a linear social impact function (hypergraph-linear voter model) the weights of the projected network are static, allowing us to develop a pair approximation that describes with accuracy the time evolution of macroscopic observables, which turn out to be independent of those weights. The macroscopic dynamics is thus equivalent to that of the standard voter model on the unweighted projected network. For a power-law social impact function (hypergraph-nonlinear voter model) the weights of the projected network depend on the instantaneous system configuration. Nevertheless, the nonlinear voter model on the unweighted projected network still reproduces the main macroscopic trends for well connected hypergraphs.

Optimal control for a SIR epidemic model with limited quarantine

We study first order necessary conditions for an optimal control problem of a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model with limitations on the duration of the quarantine. The control is done by means of the reproduction number, i.e., the number of secondary infections produced by a primary infection, which represents an external intervention that we assume time-dependent. Moreover, the control function can only be applied over a finite time interval, and the duration of the most strict quarantine (smallest possible reproduction number) is also bounded. We consider a maximization problem where the cost functional has two terms: one is the number of susceptible individuals in the long-term and the other depends on the cost of interventions. When the intervention term is linear with respect to the control, we obtain that the optimal solution is bang-bang, and we characterize the times to begin and end the strict quarantine. In the general case, when the cost functional includes the term that measures the intervention cost, we analyze the optimality of controls through numerical computations.

Spectral properties of dissipation

The novel concept of spectral diffusivity is introduced to analyse the dissipative properties of continua. The dissipative components of a linear system of evolution equations are separated into noninteracting parts. This separation is similar to mode analysis in wave propagation. The new modal quantities characterise dissipation and best interpreted as effective diffusivities, or, in case of heat conduction, as effective heat conductivities of the material.

Ballistic-diffusive model for heat transport in superlattices and the minimum effective heat conductivity

There has been much interest in semiconductor superlattices because of showing very low thermal conductivities. This makes them especially suitable for applications in a variety of devices for thermoelectric generation of energy, heat control at the nanometric length scale, etc. Recent experiments have confirmed that the effective thermal conductivity of superlattices at room temperature have a minimum for very short periods (in the order of nanometers) as some kinetic calculations had anticipated previously. This work will show advances on a thermodynamic theory of heat transport in nanometric 1D multilayer systems by considering the separation of ballistic and diffusive heat fluxes, which are both described by Guyer-Krumhansl constitutive equations. The dispersion relations, as derived from the ballistic and diffusive heat transport equations, are used to derive an effective heat conductivity of the superlattice and to explain the minimum of the effective thermal conductivity.
