CAAL: Confidence-Aware Active Learning for Heteroscedastic Atmospheric Regression

Quantifying the impacts of air pollution on health and climate relies on key atmospheric particle properties such as toxicity and hygroscopicity. However, these properties typically require complex observational techniques or expensive particle-resolved numerical simulations, limiting the availability of labeled data. We therefore estimate these hard-to-measure particle properties from routinely available observations (e.g., air pollutant concentrations and meteorological conditions). Because routine observations only indirectly reflect particle composition and structure, the mapping from routine observations to particle properties is noisy and input-dependent, yielding a heteroscedastic regression setting. With a limited and costly labeling budget, the central challenge is to select which samples to measure or simulate. While active learning is a natural approach, most acquisition strategies rely on predictive uncertainty. Under heteroscedastic noise, this signal conflates reducible epistemic uncertainty with irreducible aleatoric uncertainty, causing limited budgets to be wasted in noise-dominated regions. To address this challenge, we propose a confidence-aware active learning framework (CAAL) for efficient and robust sample selection in heteroscedastic settings. CAAL consists of two components: a decoupled uncertainty-aware training objective that separately optimises the predictive mean and noise level to stabilise uncertainty estimation, and a confidence-aware acquisition function that dynamically weights epistemic uncertainty using predicted aleatoric uncertainty as a reliability signal. Experiments on particle-resolved numerical simulations and real atmospheric observations show that CAAL consistently outperforms standard AL baselines. The proposed framework provides a practical and general solution for the efficient expansion of high-cost atmospheric particle property databases.

Comparative efficacy and safety of pharmacological interventions for the treatment of long COVID in adults: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, represents a major global pandemic of the 21st century, with long-term effects termed long COVID. This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) evaluated pharmacological interventions for adults with long COVID, incorporating randomized controlled trials and adjusted observational studies. Primary outcomes included all-cause mortality, hospitalization, ICU admission, and mechanical ventilation; secondary outcomes covered symptom recovery across five categories, with safety assessed via adverse events. Results from random-effects models showed that saline nasal irrigation (SMD=21.10, 95% CI [16.91, 25.30]), nitrilotriacetic acid trisodium (SMD=7.40 [5.79, 9.01]), tetra sodium pyrophosphate (SMD=3.69 [2.61, 4.77]), and sodium gluconate (SMD=3.01 [1.92, 4.09]) significantly improved anosmia versus control. For thrombosis, rivaroxaban reduced arterial (OR=0.33 [0.01, 8.19]) and venous thrombotic events (OR=0.12 [0.01, 0.97]), while therapeutic-dose anticoagulants lowered thrombotic risks but increased major bleeding events (OR=1.86 [1.19, 2.89]) compared to prophylactic dosing. This NMA provides comparative evidence to guide treatment strategies for long COVID, highlighting the need for further research as new evidence emerges.

DS-HGCN: A Dual-Stream Hypergraph Convolutional Network for Predicting Student Engagement via Social Contagion

Student engagement is a critical factor influencing academic success and learning outcomes. Accurately predicting student engagement is essential for optimizing teaching strategies and providing personalized interventions. However, most approaches focus on single-dimensional feature analysis and assessing engagement based on individual student factors. In this work, we propose a dual-stream multi-feature fusion model based on hypergraph convolutional networks (DS-HGCN), incorporating social contagion of student engagement. DS-HGCN enables accurate prediction of student engagement states by modeling multi-dimensional features and their propagation mechanisms between students. The framework constructs a hypergraph structure to encode engagement contagion among students and captures the emotional and behavioral differences and commonalities by multi-frequency signals. Furthermore, we introduce a hypergraph attention mechanism to dynamically weigh the influence of each student, accounting for individual differences in the propagation process. Extensive experiments on public benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method achieves superior performance and significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches.

FactorPortrait: Controllable Portrait Animation via Disentangled Expression, Pose, and Viewpoint

We introduce FactorPortrait, a video diffusion method for controllable portrait animation that enables lifelike synthesis from disentangled control signals of facial expressions, head movement, and camera viewpoints. Given a single portrait image, a driving video, and camera trajectories, our method animates the portrait by transferring facial expressions and head movements from the driving video while simultaneously enabling novel view synthesis from arbitrary viewpoints. We utilize a pre-trained image encoder to extract facial expression latents from the driving video as control signals for animation generation. Such latents implicitly capture nuanced facial expression dynamics with identity and pose information disentangled, and they are efficiently injected into the video diffusion transformer through our proposed expression controller. For camera and head pose control, we employ Plücker ray maps and normal maps rendered from 3D body mesh tracking. To train our model, we curate a large-scale synthetic dataset containing diverse combinations of camera viewpoints, head poses, and facial expression dynamics. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms existing approaches in realism, expressiveness, control accuracy, and view consistency.

Generating Reading Comprehension Exercises with Large Language Models for Educational Applications

With the rapid development of large language models (LLMs), the applications of LLMs have grown substantially. In the education domain, LLMs demonstrate significant potential, particularly in automatic text generation, which enables the creation of intelligent and adaptive learning content. This paper proposes a new LLMs framework, which is named as Reading Comprehension Exercise Generation (RCEG). It can generate high-quality and personalized English reading comprehension exercises automatically. Firstly, RCEG uses fine-tuned LLMs to generate content candidates. Then, it uses a discriminator to select the best candidate. Finally, the quality of the generated content has been improved greatly. To evaluate the performance of RCEG, a dedicated dataset for English reading comprehension is constructed to perform the experiments, and comprehensive evaluation metrics are used to analyze the experimental results. These metrics include content diversity, factual accuracy, linguistic toxicity, and pedagogical alignment. Experimental results show that RCEG significantly improves the relevance and cognitive appropriateness of the generated exercises.

CAT-ID$^2$: Category-Tree Integrated Document Identifier Learning for Generative Retrieval In E-commerce

Generative retrieval (GR) has gained significant attention as an effective paradigm that integrates the capabilities of large language models (LLMs). It generally consists of two stages: constructing discrete semantic identifiers (IDs) for documents and retrieving documents by autoregressively generating ID tokens. The core challenge in GR is how to construct document IDs (DocIDS) with strong representational power. Good IDs should exhibit two key properties: similar documents should have more similar IDs, and each document should maintain a distinct and unique ID. However, most existing methods ignore native category information, which is common and critical in E-commerce. Therefore, we propose a novel ID learning method, CAtegory-Tree Integrated Document IDentifier (CAT-ID$^2$), incorporating prior category information into the semantic IDs. CAT-ID$^2$ includes three key modules: a Hierarchical Class Constraint Loss to integrate category information layer by layer during quantization, a Cluster Scale Constraint Loss for uniform ID token distribution, and a Dispersion Loss to improve the distinction of reconstructed documents. These components enable CAT-ID$^2$ to generate IDs that make similar documents more alike while preserving the uniqueness of different documents' representations. Extensive offline and online experiments confirm the effectiveness of our method, with online A/B tests showing a 0.33% increase in average orders per thousand users for ambiguous intent queries and 0.24% for long-tail queries.

Machine learning-based upscaling of rock permeability from pore scale to core scale: effect of training dataset size and sub-core volumes

Permeability characterizes the capacity of porous formations to conduct fluids, thereby governing the performance of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), hydrocarbon extraction, and subsurface energy storage. A reliable assessment of rock permeability is therefore essential for these applications. Direct estimation of permeability from low-resolution CT images of large rock samples offers a rapid approach to obtain permeability data. However, the limited resolution fails to capture detailed pore-scale structural features, resulting in low prediction accuracy. To address this limitation, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based upscaling method that integrates high-precision pore-scale permeability information into core-scale, low-resolution CT images. In our workflow, the large core sample is partitioned into sub-core volumes, whose permeabilities are predicted using CNNs. The upscaled permeability at the core scale is then determined through a Darcy flow solver based on the predicted sub-core permeability map. Additionally, we examine the optimal sub-core volume size that balances computational efficiency and prediction accuracy. This framework effectively incorporates small-scale heterogeneity, enabling accurate permeability upscaling from micrometer-scale pores to centimeter-scale cores.

ViPER: Empowering the Self-Evolution of Visual Perception Abilities in Vision-Language Model

The limited capacity for fine-grained visual perception presents a critical bottleneck for Vision-Language Models (VLMs) in real-world applications. Addressing this is challenging due to the scarcity of high-quality data and the limitations of existing methods: supervised fine-tuning (SFT) often compromises general capabilities, while reinforcement fine-tuning (RFT) prioritizes textual reasoning over visual perception. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel two-stage task that structures visual perception learning as a coarse-to-fine progressive process. Based on this task formulation, we develop ViPER, a self-bootstrapping framework specifically designed to enable iterative evolution through self-critiquing and self-prediction. By synergistically integrating image-level and instance-level reconstruction with a two-stage reinforcement learning strategy, ViPER establishes a closed-loop training paradigm, where internally synthesized data directly fuel the enhancement of perceptual ability. Applied to the Qwen2.5-VL family, ViPER produces the Qwen-Viper series. With an average gain of 1.7% on seven comprehensive benchmarks spanning various tasks and up to 6.0% on fine-grained perception, Qwen-Viper consistently demonstrates superior performance across different vision-language scenarios while maintaining generalizability. Beyond enabling self-improvement in perceptual capabilities, ViPER provides concrete evidence for the reciprocal relationship between generation and understanding, a breakthrough to developing more autonomous and capable VLMs.

Nonlinear Stability of the Rayleigh-Taylor Problem in Quantum Navier-Stokes Equations

It is well-known that the Rayleigh--Taylor (abbr. RT) instability can be completely inhibited by the quantum effect stabilization in proper circumstances leading to a cutoff wavelength in the \emph{linear} motion equations. Motivated by the linear theory, we further investigate the {stability} for the \emph{nonlinear} RT problem of quantum Navier--Stokes equations in a slab with Navier boundary condition, and rigorously prove the inhibition of RT instability by the quantum effect under a proper setting. More precisely, if the RT density profile $\barρ$ satisfies an additional stabilizing condition, then there is a threshold ${\varepsilon_{c}}$ of the scaled Planck constant, such that if the scaled Planck constant is bigger than ${\varepsilon_{c}}$, the small perturbation solutions around an RT equilibrium state are algebraically stable in time. The mathematical proof is realized by a complicated multi-layer energy method with anisotropic norms of spacial derivatives.

Semi-Supervised Unconstrained Head Pose Estimation in the Wild

Existing research on unconstrained in-the-wild head pose estimation suffers from the flaws of its datasets, which consist of either numerous samples by non-realistic synthesis or constrained collection, or small-scale natural images yet with plausible manual annotations. This makes fully-supervised solutions compromised due to the reliance on generous labels. To alleviate it, we propose the first semi-supervised unconstrained head pose estimation method SemiUHPE, which can leverage abundant easily available unlabeled head images. Technically, we choose semi-supervised rotation regression and adapt it to the error-sensitive and label-scarce problem of unconstrained head pose. Our method is based on the observation that the aspect-ratio invariant cropping of wild heads is superior to previous landmark-based affine alignment given that landmarks of unconstrained human heads are usually unavailable, especially for underexplored non-frontal heads. Instead of using a pre-fixed threshold to filter out pseudo labeled heads, we propose dynamic entropy based filtering to adaptively remove unlabeled outliers as training progresses by updating the threshold in multiple stages. We then revisit the design of weak-strong augmentations and improve it by devising two novel head-oriented strong augmentations, termed pose-irrelevant cut-occlusion and pose-altering rotation consistency respectively. Extensive experiments and ablation studies show that SemiUHPE outperforms its counterparts greatly on public benchmarks under both the front-range and full-range settings. Furthermore, our proposed method is also beneficial for solving other closely related problems, including generic object rotation regression and 3D head reconstruction, demonstrating good versatility and extensibility. Beyond Static Testbeds: An Interaction-Centric Agent Simulation Platform for Dynamic Recommender Systems

Evaluating and iterating upon recommender systems is crucial, yet traditional A/B testing is resource-intensive, and offline methods struggle with dynamic user-platform interactions. While agent-based simulation is promising, existing platforms often lack a mechanism for user actions to dynamically reshape the environment. To bridge this gap, we introduce RecInter, a novel agent-based simulation platform for recommender systems featuring a robust interaction mechanism. In RecInter platform, simulated user actions (e.g., likes, reviews, purchases) dynamically update item attributes in real-time, and introduced Merchant Agents can reply, fostering a more realistic and evolving ecosystem. High-fidelity simulation is ensured through Multidimensional User Profiling module, Advanced Agent Architecture, and LLM fine-tuned on Chain-of-Thought (CoT) enriched interaction data. Our platform achieves significantly improved simulation credibility and successfully replicates emergent phenomena like Brand Loyalty and the Matthew Effect. Experiments demonstrate that this interaction mechanism is pivotal for simulating realistic system evolution, establishing our platform as a credible testbed for recommender systems research. Our codes are available at https://github.com/jinsong8/RecInter.

MTGR: Industrial-Scale Generative Recommendation Framework in Meituan

Scaling law has been extensively validated in many domains such as natural language processing and computer vision. In the recommendation system, recent work has adopted generative recommendations to achieve scalability, but their generative approaches require abandoning the carefully constructed cross features of traditional recommendation models. We found that this approach significantly degrades model performance, and scaling up cannot compensate for it at all. In this paper, we propose MTGR (Meituan Generative Recommendation) to address this issue. MTGR is modeling based on the HSTU architecture and can retain the original deep learning recommendation model (DLRM) features, including cross features. Additionally, MTGR achieves training and inference acceleration through user-level compression to ensure efficient scaling. We also propose Group-Layer Normalization (GLN) to enhance the performance of encoding within different semantic spaces and the dynamic masking strategy to avoid information leakage. We further optimize the training frameworks, enabling support for our models with 10 to 100 times computational complexity compared to the DLRM, without significant cost increases. MTGR achieved 65x FLOPs for single-sample forward inference compared to the DLRM model, resulting in the largest gain in nearly two years both offline and online. This breakthrough was successfully deployed on Meituan, the world's largest food delivery platform, where it has been handling the main traffic.

Small Alfvén Number Limit for the Global-in-time Solutions of Incompressible MHD Equations with General Initial Data

The small Alfvén number (denoted by $\varepsilon$) limit (one type of large parameter limits, i.e. singular limits) in magnetohydrodynamic (abbr. MHD) equations was first proposed by Klainerman--Majda in (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 34: 481--524, 1981). Recently Ju--Wang--Xu mathematically verified that the \emph{local-in-time} solutions of three-dimensional (abbr. 3D) ideal (i.e. the absence of the dissipative terms) incompressible MHD equations with general initial data in $\mathbb{T}^3$ (i.e. a spatially periodic domain) tend to a solution of 2D ideal MHD equations in the distribution sense as $\varepsilon\to 0$ by Schochet's fast averaging method in (J. Differential Equations, 114: 476--512, 1994). In this paper, we revisit the small Alfvén number limit in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n=2$, $3$, and develop another approach, motivated by Cai--Lei's energy method in (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 228: 969--993, 2018), to establish a new conclusion that the \emph{global-in-time} solutions of incompressible MHD equations (including the viscous resistive case) with general initial data converge to zero as $\varepsilon\to 0$ for any given time-space variable $(x,t)$ with $t>0$. In addition, we find that the large perturbation solutions and vanishing phenomenon of the nonlinear interactions also exist in the \emph{viscous resistive} MHD equations for small Alfvén numbers, and thus extend Bardos et al.'s results of the \emph{ideal} MHD equations in (Trans Am Math Soc 305: 175--191, 1988).

Global Solvability for the Compressible Hookean Viscoelastic Fluids with a Free Boundary in Some Classes of Large Data

Recently Jiang-Jiang established a global (in time) existence result for unique strong solutions of the two-dimensional (2D) free-boundary problem of an incompressible Hookean viscoelastic fluid, the rest state of which is defined in a slab, in some classes of large data [28]. In particular, Jiang-Jiang's mathematical result shows that, if the initial free boundary is flat, the way the elastic deformation under the large elasticity coefficient $κ$ acts on the free boundary prevents the natural tendency of the fluid to form singularities, even when the initial velocity is properly large. However it is not clear whether their result can be extended to the corresponding 3D case. In this paper, we further find a similar result in the 3D stratified (immiscible) compressible Hookean viscoelastic fluids in an infinite slab with two restrictive conditions: that the elasticity coefficients of two fluids are equal, and that the initial density functions satisfy the asymptotic stability condition in Lagrangian coordinates. These two restrictive conditions in the compressible case contribute us to avoid the essential obstacles that would be faced in the extension of Jiang-Jiang's result from two dimensions to our 3D case. In addition, we can further obtain a new result regarding the vanishing phenomena of the nonlinear interactions of solutions with the fixed initial velocity and the initial zero perturbation deformation. Such a new result roughly presents that the solutions of the problem considered by us can be approximated by the ones of a linear problem for sufficiently large $κ$.

Boosting Semi-Supervised 2D Human Pose Estimation by Revisiting Data Augmentation and Consistency Training

The 2D human pose estimation (HPE) is a basic visual problem. However, its supervised learning requires massive keypoint labels, which is labor-intensive to collect. Thus, we aim at boosting a pose estimator by excavating extra unlabeled data with semi-supervised learning (SSL). Most previous SSHPE methods are consistency-based and strive to maintain consistent outputs for differently augmented inputs. Under this genre, we find that SSHPE can be boosted from two cores: advanced data augmentations and concise consistency training ways. Specifically, for the first core, we discover the synergistic effects of existing augmentations, and reveal novel paradigms for conveniently producing new superior HPE-oriented augmentations which can more effectively add noise on unlabeled samples. We can therefore establish paired easy-hard augmentations with larger difficulty gaps. For the second core, we propose to repeatedly augment unlabeled images with diverse hard augmentations, and generate multi-path predictions sequentially for optimizing multi-losses in a single network. This simple and compact design is interpretable, and easily benefits from newly found augmentations. Comparing to state-of-the-art SSL approaches, our method brings substantial improvements on public datasets. And we extensively validate the superiority and versatility of our approach on conventional human body images, overhead fisheye images, and human hand images. The code is released in https://github.com/hnuzhy/MultiAugs.

Asymptotical Behavior of Global Solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg Equations with Respect to Capillarity Number at Infinity

Vanishing capillarity in the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (NSK) equations has been widely investigated, in particular, it is well-known that the NSK equations converge to the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations by vanishing capillarity number. To our best knowledge, this paper first investigates the behavior of large capillary number, denoted by $κ^2$, for the global(-in-time) strong solutions with small initial perturbations of the three-dimensional (3D) NSK equations in a slab domain with Navier(-slip) boundary condition. Under the well-prepared initial data, we can construct a family of global strong solutions of the 3D incompressible NSK equations with respect to $κ>0$, where the solutions converge to a unique solution of 2D incompressible NS-like equations as $κ$ goes to infinity.

Foundations of a Knee Joint Digital Twin from qMRI Biomarkers for Osteoarthritis and Knee Replacement

This study forms the basis of a digital twin system of the knee joint, using advanced quantitative MRI (qMRI) and machine learning to advance precision health in osteoarthritis (OA) management and knee replacement (KR) prediction. We combined deep learning-based segmentation of knee joint structures with dimensionality reduction to create an embedded feature space of imaging biomarkers. Through cross-sectional cohort analysis and statistical modeling, we identified specific biomarkers, including variations in cartilage thickness and medial meniscus shape, that are significantly associated with OA incidence and KR outcomes. Integrating these findings into a comprehensive framework represents a considerable step toward personalized knee-joint digital twins, which could enhance therapeutic strategies and inform clinical decision-making in rheumatological care. This versatile and reliable infrastructure has the potential to be extended to broader clinical applications in precision health.

On Temporal Decay of Compressible Hookean Viscoelastic Fluids with Relatively Large Elasticity Coefficient

Recently, Jiang--Jiang (J. Differential Equations 282, 2021) showed the existence of unique strong solutions in spatial periodic domain (denoted by $\mathbb{T}^3$), whenever the elasticity coefficient is larger than the initial velocity perturbation of the rest state. Motivated by Jiang--Jiang's result, we revisit the Cauchy problem of the compressible viscoelastic fluids in Lagrangian coordinates. Employing an energy method with temporal weights and an additional asymptotic stability condition of initial density in Lagrangian coordinates, we extend the Jiang--Jiang's result with exponential decay-in-time in $\mathbb{T}^3$ to the one with algebraic decay-in-time in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3$. Thanks to the algebraic decay of solutions established by the energy method with temporal weights, we can further use the spectral analysis to improve the temporal decay rate of solutions. In particular, we find that the $k$-th order spatial derivatives of both the density and deformation perturbations converge to zero in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ at a rate of $(1+t)^{-\frac{3}{4}-\frac{k+1}{2}}$, which is faster than the decay rate $(1 +t)^{-\frac{3}{4}-\frac{k}{2}}$ obtained by Hu--Wu (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 45, 2013) for $k=0$ and $ 1$. In addition, it's well-known that the decay rate $(1+t)^{-\frac{3}{4}-\frac{k}{2}}$ of the density perturbation is optimal in the compressible Navier--Stokes equations (A.~Matsumura, T.~Nishida, Proc. Jpn. Acad. Ser-A. 55, 1979). Therefore, our faster temporal decay rates indicate that the elasticity accelerates the decay of the density perturbation after the rest state of a compressible viscoelastic fluid being perturbed.
