Generation and acceleration of high brightness electrons beams bunched at X-ray wavelengths using plasma-based acceleration

We show using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and theoretical analysis that a high-quality electron beam whose density is modulated at angstrom scales can be generated directly using density downramp injection in a periodically modulated density in nonlinear plasma wave wakefields. The density modulation turns on and off the injection of electrons at the period of the modulation. Due to the unique longitudinal mapping between the electrons' initial positions and their final trapped positions inside the wake, this results in an electron beam with density modulation at a wavelength orders of magnitude shorter than the plasma density modulation. The ponderomotive force of two counter propagating lasers of the same frequency can generate a density modulation at half the laser wavelength. Assuming a laser wavelength of $0.8\micro\meter$, fully self-consistent OSIRIS PIC simulations show that this scheme can generate high quality beams modulated at wavelengths between 10s and 100 angstroms. Such beams could produce fully coherent, stable, hundreds of GW X-rays by going through a resonant undulator.

The ALMA Survey of 70 $μ\rm m$ Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). II: Molecular Outflows in the Extreme Early Stages of Protocluster Formation

We present a study of outflows at extremely early stages of high-mass star formation obtained from the ALMA Survey of 70 $μ\rm m$ dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). Twelve massive 3.6$-$70 $μ\rm m$ dark prestellar clump candidates were observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 6. Forty-three outflows are identified toward 41 out of 301 dense cores using the CO and SiO emission lines, yielding a detection rate of 14%. We discover 6 episodic molecular outflows associated with low- to high-mass cores, indicating that episodic outflows (and therefore episodic accretion) begin at extremely early stages of protostellar evolution for a range of core masses. The time span between consecutive ejection events is much smaller than those found in more evolved stages, which indicates that the ejection episodicity timescale is likely not constant over time. The estimated outflow dynamical timescale appears to increase with core masses, which likely indicates that more massive cores have longer accretion timescales than less massive cores. The lower accretion rates in these 70 $μ\rm m$ dark objects compared to the more evolved protostars indicate that the accretion rates increase with time. The total outflow energy rate is smaller than the turbulent energy dissipation rate, which suggests that outflow induced turbulence cannot sustain the internal clump turbulence at the current epoch. We often detect thermal SiO emission within these 70 $μ\rm m$ dark clumps that is unrelated to CO outflows. This SiO emission could be produced by collisions, intersection flows, undetected protostars, or other motions.

Searching for shocks in high-mass starless clump candidates

In order to search for shocks in the very early stage of star formation, we performed single-point surveys of SiO J=1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 lines and the H$_2$CO $2_{12}-1_{11}$ line toward a sample of 100 high-mass starless clump candidates (SCCs) by using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) 21-m radio telescopes. The detection rates of the SiO J=1-0, 2-1, 3-2 lines and the H$_2$CO line are $31.0\%$, $31.0\%$, $19.5\%$ and $93.0\%$, respectively. Shocks seem to be common in this stage of massive star formation. The widths of the observed SiO lines (full width at zero power (FWZP)) range from 3.4 to 55.1 km s$^{-1}$. A significant fraction ($\sim29\%$) of the detected SiO spectra have broad line widths (FWZP $>20~km~s^{-1}$), which are very likely associated with fast shocks driven by protostellar outflows. This result suggests that about one third of the SiO-detected SCCs are not really starless but protostellar. On the other hand, about 40$\%$ of the detected SiO spectra show narrow line widths (FWZP<10 $km~s^{-1}$) probably associated with low-velocity shocks which are not necessarily protostellar in origin. The estimated SiO column densities are mostly $0.31-4.32\times10^{12}~cm^{-2}$. Comparing the SiO column densities derived from SiO J=1-0 and 2-1 lines, we suggest that the SiO molecules in the SCCs may be in the non-LTE condition. The SiO abundances to H$_2$ are usually $0.20-10.92\times10^{-10}$.

Weight hierarchies and weight distributions of a familiy of $p$-ary linear codes

The weight distribution and weight hierarchy of linear codes are two important research topics in coding theory. In this paper, by choosing proper defining sets from inhomogeneous quadratic functions over $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{2},$ we construct a family of $3$-weight $p$-ary linear codes and determine their weight distributions and weight hierarchies. Most of the codes can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Weight hierarchies of a family of linear codes associated with degenerate quadratic forms

We restrict a degenerate quadratic form $f$ over a finite field of odd characteristic to subspaces. Thus, a quotient space related to $f$ is introduced. Then we get a non-degenerate quadratic form induced by $f$ over the quotient space. Some related results on the subspaces and quotient space are obtained. Based on this, we solve the weight hierarchies of a family of linear codes related to $f.$

Weight distributions of several families of 3-weight binary linear codes

The linear codes with a few weights have been applied widely in combinatorial designs, secret sharing, association schemes, authentication codes and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we first correct an erroneous result about the exponential sum $\sum_{x\in \mathbb{F}_{2^{e}}}χ_1\left(ax^{2^α+1}+bx\right).$ Then, using the above exponential sum, we construct several families of binary linear codes of $3$-weight and determine their weight distributions. Moreover, Most of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Weight distributions and weight hierarchies of two classes of binary linear codes

Linear codes with a few weights can be applied to communication, consumer electronics and data storage system. In addition, the weight hierarchy of linear codes has many applications such as on the type II wire-tap channel, dealing with $t$-resilient functions and trellis or branch complexity of linear codes and so on. In this paper, we first present a formula for computing the weight hierarchies of linear codes constructed by the generalized method of defining sets. Then, we construct two classes of binary linear codes with a few weights and determine their weight distributions and weight hierarchies completely. Some codes of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Automatic Segmentation and Visualization of Choroid in OCT with Knowledge Infused Deep Learning

The choroid provides oxygen and nourishment to the outer retina thus is related to the pathology of various ocular diseases. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is advantageous in visualizing and quantifying the choroid in vivo. (1) The lower boundary of the choroid (choroid-sclera interface) in OCT is fuzzy, which makes the automatic segmentation difficult and inaccurate. (2) The visualization of the choroid is hindered by the vessel shadows from the superficial layers of the inner retina. In this paper, we propose to incorporate medical and imaging prior knowledge with deep learning to address these two problems. We propose a biomarker infused global-to-local network for the choroid segmentation. It leverages the choroidal thickness, a primary biomarker in clinic, as a constraint to improve the segmentation accuracy. We also design a global-to-local strategy in the choroid segmentation: a global module is used to segment all the retinal and choroidal layers simultaneously for suppressing overfitting and providing global structure information, then a local module is used to refine the segmentation with the biomarker infusion. To eliminate the retinal vessel shadows, we propose a pipeline that firstly use anatomical and OCT imaging knowledge to locate the shadows using their projection on the retinal pigment epithelium layer, then the contents of the choroidal vasculature at the shadow locations are predicted with an edge-to-texture generative adversarial inpainting network. The experiments show our method outperforms the existing methods on both the segmentation and shadow elimination tasks. We further apply the proposed method in a clinical prospective study for understanding the pathology of glaucoma by detecting the structure and vascular changes of the choroid related to the elevation of intra-ocular pressure.

CO observations toward HI-rich Ultra Diffuse Galaxies

We present CO observations toward a sample of six HI-rich Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) as well as one UDG (VLSB-A) in the Virgo Cluster with the IRAM 30-m telescope. CO 1-0 is marginally detected at 4sigma level in AGC122966, as the first detection of CO emission in UDGs. We estimate upper limits of molecular mass in other galaxies from the non-detection of CO lines. These upper limits and the marginal CO detection in AGC122966 indicate low mass ratios between molecular and atomic gas masses. With the star formation efficiency derived from the molecular gas, we suggest that the inefficiency of star formation in such HI-rich UDGs is likely caused by the low efficiency in converting molecules from atomic gas, instead of low efficiency in forming stars from molecular gas.

Cross-lingual Semantic Role Labeling with Model Transfer

Prior studies show that cross-lingual semantic role labeling (SRL) can be achieved by model transfer under the help of universal features. In this paper, we fill the gap of cross-lingual SRL by proposing an end-to-end SRL model that incorporates a variety of universal features and transfer methods. We study both the bilingual transfer and multi-source transfer, under gold or machine-generated syntactic inputs, pre-trained high-order abstract features, and contextualized multilingual word representations. Experimental results on the Universal Proposition Bank corpus indicate that performances of the cross-lingual SRL can vary by leveraging different cross-lingual features. In addition, whether the features are gold-standard also has an impact on performances. Precisely, we find that gold syntax features are much more crucial for cross-lingual SRL, compared with the automatically-generated ones. Moreover, universal dependency structure features are able to give the best help, and both pre-trained high-order features and contextualized word representations can further bring significant improvements.

Universality of the dynamic characteristic relationship of electron correlation in the two-photon double ionization process of a helium-like system

Universality of the dynamic characteristic relationship between the characteristic time $t_c$ and the two-electron Coulomb interaction energy $\overline{V}_{12}$ of the ground state in the two-photon double ionization process is investigated through changing the parameters of the two-electron atomic system and the corresponding laser conditions. The numerical results show that the product $t_{c}\overline{V}_{12}$ keeps constant around 4.1 in the cases of changing the nucleus charge, the electron charge, the electron mass, and changing simultaneously the nucleus charge and the electron charge. These results demonstrate that the dynamic characteristic relationship in the two-photon double ionization process is universal. This work sheds more light on the the dynamic characteristic relationship in ultrafast processes and may find its application in the measurement of attosecond pulses.

AGE Challenge: Angle Closure Glaucoma Evaluation in Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography

Angle closure glaucoma (ACG) is a more aggressive disease than open-angle glaucoma, where the abnormal anatomical structures of the anterior chamber angle (ACA) may cause an elevated intraocular pressure and gradually lead to glaucomatous optic neuropathy and eventually to visual impairment and blindness. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) imaging provides a fast and contactless way to discriminate angle closure from open angle. Although many medical image analysis algorithms have been developed for glaucoma diagnosis, only a few studies have focused on AS-OCT imaging. In particular, there is no public AS-OCT dataset available for evaluating the existing methods in a uniform way, which limits progress in the development of automated techniques for angle closure detection and assessment. To address this, we organized the Angle closure Glaucoma Evaluation challenge (AGE), held in conjunction with MICCAI 2019. The AGE challenge consisted of two tasks: scleral spur localization and angle closure classification. For this challenge, we released a large dataset of 4800 annotated AS-OCT images from 199 patients, and also proposed an evaluation framework to benchmark and compare different models. During the AGE challenge, over 200 teams registered online, and more than 1100 results were submitted for online evaluation. Finally, eight teams participated in the onsite challenge. In this paper, we summarize these eight onsite challenge methods and analyze their corresponding results for the two tasks. We further discuss limitations and future directions. In the AGE challenge, the top-performing approach had an average Euclidean Distance of 10 pixels (10um) in scleral spur localization, while in the task of angle closure classification, all the algorithms achieved satisfactory performances, with two best obtaining an accuracy rate of 100%.

Electronic Transport of Two-Dimensional Ultrawide Bandgap Material h-BeO

Two-dimensional ultrawide bandgap materials, with bandgaps significantly wider than 3.4 eV, have compelling potential advantages in nano high-power semiconductor, deep-ultraviolet optoelectronics, and so on. Recently, two-dimensional layered h-BeO has been synthesized in the experiments. In the present work, the first-principles calculations predict that monolayer h-BeO has an indirect bandgap of 7.05 eV with the HSE functional. The ultrawide bandgap results from the two atomic electronegativity difference in the polar h-BeO. And the electronic transport properties are also systematically investigated by using the Boltzmann transport theory. The polar LO phonons of h-BeO can generate the macroscopic polarization field and strongly couple to electrons by the Frohlich interaction. Limited by the electron-phonon scattering, monolayer h-BeO has a high mobility of 473 cm^2/Vs at room temperature. Further studies indicate that the biaxial tensile strain can reduce the electronic effective mass and enhance the electron-phonon coupling strength. The suitable strain can promote the mobility to ~1000 cm^2/Vs at room temperature.

Reconstruction and Quantification of 3D Iris Surface for Angle-Closure Glaucoma Detection in Anterior Segment OCT

Precise characterization and analysis of iris shape from Anterior Segment OCT (AS-OCT) are of great importance in facilitating diagnosis of angle-closure-related diseases. Existing methods focus solely on analyzing structural properties identified from the 2D slice, while accurate characterization of morphological changes of iris shape in 3D AS-OCT may be able to reveal in addition the risk of disease progression. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for reconstruction and quantification of 3D iris surface from AS-OCT imagery. We consider it to be the first work to detect angle-closure glaucoma by means of 3D representation. An iris segmentation network with wavelet refinement block (WRB) is first proposed to generate the initial shape of the iris from single AS-OCT slice. The 3D iris surface is then reconstructed using a guided optimization method with Poisson-disk sampling. Finally, a set of surface-based features are extracted, which are used in detecting of angle-closure glaucoma. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is highly effective in iris segmentation and surface reconstruction. Moreover, we show that 3D-based representation achieves better performance in angle-closure glaucoma detection than does 2D-based feature.

Open-Narrow-Synechiae Anterior Chamber Angle Classification in AS-OCT Sequences

Anterior chamber angle (ACA) classification is a key step in the diagnosis of angle-closure glaucoma in Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT). Existing automated analysis methods focus on a binary classification system (i.e., open angle or angle-closure) in a 2D AS-OCT slice. However, clinical diagnosis requires a more discriminating ACA three-class system (i.e., open, narrow, or synechiae angles) for the benefit of clinicians who seek better to understand the progression of the spectrum of angle-closure glaucoma types. To address this, we propose a novel sequence multi-scale aggregation deep network (SMA-Net) for open-narrow-synechiae ACA classification based on an AS-OCT sequence. In our method, a Multi-Scale Discriminative Aggregation (MSDA) block is utilized to learn the multi-scale representations at slice level, while a ConvLSTM is introduced to study the temporal dynamics of these representations at sequence level. Finally, a multi-level loss function is used to combine the slice-based and sequence-based losses. The proposed method is evaluated across two AS-OCT datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in applicability, effectiveness, and accuracy. We believe this work to be the first attempt to classify ACAs into open, narrow, or synechia types grading using AS-OCT sequences.

Convolutional Neural Network for Transition Modeling Based on Linear Stability Theory

Transition prediction is an important aspect of aerodynamic design because of its impact on skin friction and potential coupling with flow separation characteristics. Traditionally, the modeling of transition has relied on correlation-based empirical formulas based on integral quantities such as the shape factor of the boundary layer. However, in many applications of computational fluid dynamics, the shape factor is not straightforwardly available or not well-defined. We propose using the complete velocity profile along with other quantities (e.g., frequency, Reynolds number) to predict the perturbation amplification factor. While this can be achieved with regression models based on a classical fully connected neural network, such a model can be computationally more demanding. We propose a novel convolutional neural network inspired by the underlying physics as described by the stability equations. Specifically, convolutional layers are first used to extract integral quantities from the velocity profiles, and then fully connected layers are used to map the extracted integral quantities, along with frequency and Reynolds number, to the output (amplification ratio). Numerical tests on classical boundary layers clearly demonstrate the merits of the proposed method. More importantly, we demonstrate that, for Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities in two-dimensional, low-speed boundary layers, the proposed network encodes information in the boundary layer profiles into an integral quantity that is strongly correlated to a well-known, physically defined parameter -- the shape factor.

High-throughput injection-acceleration of electron bunches from a linear accelerator to a laser wakefield accelerator

Plasma-based accelerators (PBAs) driven by either intense lasers (laser wakefield accelerators, LWFAs) or particle beams (plasma wakefield accelerators, PWFAs), can accelerate charged particles at extremely high gradients compared to conventional radio-frequency (RF) accelerators. In the past two decades, great strides have been made in this field, making PBA a candidate for next-generation light sources and colliders. However, these challenging applications necessarily require beams with good stability, high quality, controllable polarization and excellent reproducibility. To date, such beams are generated only by conventional RF accelerators. Therefore, it is important to demonstrate the injection and acceleration of beams first produced using a conventional RF accelerator, by a PBA. In some recent studies on LWFA staging and external injection-acceleration in PWFA only a very small fraction (from below 0.1% to few percent) of the injected charge (the coupling efficiency) was accelerated. For future colliders where beam energy will need to be boosted using multiple stages, the coupling efficiency per stage must approach 100%. Here we report the first demonstration of external injection from a photocathode-RF-gun-based conventional linear accelerator (LINAC) into a LWFA and subsequent acceleration without any significant loss of charge or degradation of quality, which is achieved by properly shaping and matching the beam into the plasma structure. This is an important step towards realizing a high-throughput, multi-stage, high-energy, hybrid conventional-plasma accelerator.

A new field solver for modeling of relativistic particle-laser interactions using the particle-in-cell algorithm

A customized finite-difference field solver for the particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm that provides higher fidelity for wave-particle interactions in intense electromagnetic waves is presented. In many problems of interest, particles with relativistic energies interact with intense electromagnetic fields that have phase velocities near the speed of light. Numerical errors can arise due to (1) dispersion errors in the phase velocity of the wave, (2) the staggering in time between the electric and magnetic fields and between particle velocity and position and (3) errors in the time derivative in the momentum advance. Errors of the first two kinds are analyzed in detail. It is shown that by using field solvers with different $\mathbf{k}$-space operators in Faraday's and Ampere's law, the dispersion errors and magnetic field time-staggering errors in the particle pusher can be simultaneously removed for electromagnetic waves moving primarily in a specific direction. The new algorithm was implemented into OSIRIS by using customized higher-order finite-difference operators. Schemes using the proposed solver in combination with different particle pushers are compared through PIC simulation. It is shown that the use of the new algorithm, together with an analytic particle pusher (assuming constant fields over a time step), can lead to accurate modeling of the motion of a single electron in an intense laser field with normalized vector potentials, $eA/mc^2$, exceeding $10^4$ for typical cell sizes and time steps.
