A SiO J = 5 - 4 Survey Toward Massive Star Formation Regions

We performed a survey in the SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line toward a sample of 199 Galactic massive star-forming regions at different evolutionary stages with the SMT 10 m and CSO 10.4 m telescopes. The sample consists of 44 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs), 86 protostellar candidates, and 69 young \HII\ regions. We detected SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line emission in 102 sources, with a detection rate of 57\%, 37\%, and 65\% for IRDCs, protostellar candidates, and young \HII\ regions, respectively. We find both broad line with Full Widths at Zero Power (FWZP) $>$ 20 \kms and narrow line emissons of SiO in objects at various evolutionary stages, likely associated with high-velocity shocks and low-velocity shocks, respectively. The SiO luminosities do not show apparent differences among various evolutionary stages in our sample. We find no correlation between the SiO abundance and the luminosity-to-mass ratio, indicating that the SiO abundance does not vary significantly in regions at different evolutionary stages of star formation.

Electric field effect on short-range polar orders in a relaxor ferroelectric system

Short-range polar orders in the relaxor ferroelectric material PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_3$-$28\%$PbTiO$_3$ (PMN-28PT) have been studied using neutron diffuse scattering. An external electric field along [110] direction can affect the diffuse scattering in the low temperature rhombohedral/monoclinic phase. Diffuse scattering intensities associated with [110] short-range polarizations are partially suppressed, while those arising from [1$\bar{1}$0] polarizations are enhanced. On the other hand, short-range polar orders along other equivalent $\langle110\rangle$ directions, i.e. [101],[10$\bar{1}$], [011], and [01$\bar{1}$] directions, are virtually unaffected by the field. Our results, combined with previous work, strongly suggest that most part of short-range polar orders in PMN-$x$PT relaxor systems are robust in the low temperature phase, where they couple strongly to ferroelectric polarizations of the surrounding ferroelectric domains, and would only respond to an external field indirectly through ferroelectric domain rotation.

Understanding two-photon double ionization of helium from the perspective of the characteristic time of dynamic transitions

By using the B-spline numerical method, we investigate a two-photon double-ionization (TPDI) process of helium in a high-frequency laser field with its frequency ranging from 1.6~a.u. to 3.0~a.u. and the pulse duration ranging from 75 to 160~attoseconds. We found that there exists a characteristic time $t_{c}$ for a TPDI process, such that the pattern of energy distribution of two ionized electrons presents a peak or two, depending respectively on whether the pulse duration is shorter or longer than $t_{c}$. Especially, as the pulse duration is larger than $t_c$, the TPDI spectrum shows a double-peak structure which is attributed to the fact that most of the electron-electron Coulomb interaction energy is acquired by single electron during their oscillation around the nucleus before the two electrons leave. Additionally, if the photon energy is less than the ionization energy of He$^{+}$, $t_{c}$ is not a fixed value, and it increases as the photon energy decreases; while if the energy of a photon is greater than the ionization energy of He$^{+}$, $t_{c}$ is fixed at about 105 attoseconds. We further found that, for a helium-like ion in its ground state, the characteristic time for the case of the photon energy larger than the ionization energy of the second electron has a key relation with the Coulomb interaction energy $\overline{V}_{12}$ between the two electrons, which can be expressed as $t_{c}\overline{V}_{12}=4.192$, a type of quantum mechanical uncertainty relation between time and energy. In addition, this relation can be attributed to the existence of a minimal evolution time from the ground state to a double ionization state with two electrons carrying different energies. These results may shed light on deeper understanding of many-electron quantum dynamical processes.

Spin-order dependent anomalous Hall effect and magneto-optical effect in noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn$_{3}X$N ($X$ = Ga, Zn, Ag, and Ni)

Noncollinear antiferromagnets (AFMs) have recently attracted a lot of attention owing to the potential emergence of exotic spin orders on geometrically frustrated lattices, which can be characterized by corresponding spin chiralities. By performing first-principles density functional calculations together with group-theory analysis and tight-binding modelling, here we systematically study the spin-order dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and magneto-optical effect (MOE) in representative noncollinear AFMs Mn$_{3}X$N ($X$ = Ga, Zn, Ag, and Ni). The symmetry-related tensor shape of the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (IAHC) for different spin orders is determined by analyzing the relevant magnetic point groups. We show that while only the ${xy}$ component of the IAHC tensor is nonzero for right-handed spin chirality, all other elements, $σ_{xy}$, $σ_{yz}$, and $σ_{zx}$, are nonvanishing for a state with left-handed spin chirality owing to lowering of the symmetry. Our tight-binding arguments reveal that the magnitude of IAHC relies on the details of the band structure and that $σ_{xy}$ is periodically modulated as the spin rotates in-plane. The IAHC obtained from first principles is found to be rather large, e.g., it amounts to 359 S/cm in Mn$_{3}$AgN. By extending our analysis to finite frequencies, we calculate the optical isotropy [$σ_{xx}(ω)\approxσ_{yy}(ω)\approxσ_{zz}(ω)$] and the magneto-optical anisotropy [$σ_{xy}(ω)\neqσ_{yz}(ω)\neqσ_{zx}(ω)$] of Mn$_{3}X$N. We argue that the spin-order dependent AHE and MOE are indispensable in detecting complex spin structures in noncollinear AFMs.

Superpotentials and Geometric Invariants of Parallel/Complete Coincident/Part Coincident D-brane System on Compact Calabi-Yau Manifold

For D-brane system with three D-branes on compact Calabi-Yau threefolds, the dual F-theory fourfolds for parallel/complete coincident/part coincident D-brane system is constructed by the type II/F-theory duality. Complete coincident means that the three D-branes coincide and part coincident represents the coincident of two of the three D branes. The low energy effective superpotentials are calculated by mirror symmetry, GKZ-system method and the type II/F-theory duality on the B-model side, respectively. Using the mirror symmetry, A-model superpotentials and the Ooguri-Vafa invariants are obtained from the B-model side. These results indicate that the superpotential contributed by one of three parallel D-branes is identical with the D-brane system with only one D-brane, which is a signal of decoupling of the parallel topological D-branes. However, the superpotential and Oogrui-Vafa invariants are different among parallel, complete coincident and part coincident D-brane system, which show the evidence of the phase transition due to the enhanced gauge symmetry in the low energy theories and the geometrical singularity.

Oxynitride Thin Films versus Particle-Based Photoanodes: a Comparative Study for Photoelectrochemical Solar Water Splitting

The solar water splitting process assisted by semiconductor photocatalysts attracts growing research interests worldwide for the production of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy carrier. Due to their optical and electrical properties several oxynitride materials show great promise for the fabrication of efficient photocatalysts for solar water splitting. This study reports a comparative investigation of particle- and thin films-based photocatalysts using three different oxynitride materials. The absolute comparison of the photoelectrochemical activities favors the particle-based electrodes due to the better absorption properties and larger electrochemical surface area. However, thin films surpass the particle-based photoelectrodes due to their more suitable morphological features that improve the separation and mobility of the photo-generated charge carriers. Our analysis identifies what specific insights into the properties of materials can be achieved with the two complementary approaches.

HYPE: A High Performing NLP System for Automatically Detecting Hypoglycemia Events from Electronic Health Record Notes

Hypoglycemia is common and potentially dangerous among those treated for diabetes. Electronic health records (EHRs) are important resources for hypoglycemia surveillance. In this study, we report the development and evaluation of deep learning-based natural language processing systems to automatically detect hypoglycemia events from the EHR narratives. Experts in Public Health annotated 500 EHR notes from patients with diabetes. We used this annotated dataset to train and evaluate HYPE, supervised NLP systems for hypoglycemia detection. In our experiment, the convolutional neural network model yielded promising performance $Precision=0.96 \pm 0.03, Recall=0.86 \pm 0.03, F1=0.91 \pm 0.03$ in a 10-fold cross-validation setting. Despite the annotated data is highly imbalanced, our CNN-based HYPE system still achieved a high performance for hypoglycemia detection. HYPE could be used for EHR-based hypoglycemia surveillance and to facilitate clinicians for timely treatment of high-risk patients.

$R^4$ corrections to holographic Schwinger effect

We consider $R^4$ corrections to the holographic Schwinger effect in an AdS black hole background and a confining D3-brane background. The potential between a test particle pair are performed for both backgrounds. We find there is no potential barrier in the critical electric field, which means that the system becomes catastrophically unstable. It is shown that for both backgrounds increasing the inverse 't Hooft coupling parameter $1/λ$ enhances the Schwinger effect. We also discuss the possible relation between the Schwinger effect and the viscosity-entropy ratio $η/s$ in strong coupling.

Millimeter line observations toward four local galaxies

We present results of millimeter line observations toward four local gas-rich galaxies (NGC 3079, NGC 4258, NGC 6240 and VII Zw 31) with the IRAM 30 meter millimeter telescope. More than 33 lines in these four sources were detected, including normal dense gas tracers (HCN 1-0, HCO$^+$ 1-0, and C$_2$H 1-0, etc) and their isotopic species. H$^{13}$CN (1-0) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) are detected for the first time in NGC 4258. Optical depths of HCN 1-0 and HCO$^{+}$ 1-0 were estimated with detected isotopic lines in NGC 4258, which were 4.1 and 2.6, respectively. HC$_3$N $J=29-28$, which requires high volume density and high temperature to excite, was detected in NGC 6240. High ratios of HCO$^+$/HCN in NGC 4258 and NGC 6240 imply that this ratio might not be a perfect diagnostic tool between AGN and starburst environments, due to contamination/combination of both processes. The low HC$_3$N/HCN line ratios with less than 0.15 in NGC 4258, NGC 6240 and the non-detection of HC$_3$N line in NGC 3079 and VII Zw 31 indicates that these four galaxies are HC$_3$N-poor galaxies. The variation of fractional abundance of CN in different types of galaxies is large.

An SOA Based Design of JUNO DAQ Online Software

The Online Software, manager of the JUNO data acquisition (DAQ) system, is composed of many distributed components working coordinately. It takes the responsibility of configuring, processes management, controlling and information sharing etc. The design of service-oriented architecture (SOA) which represents the modern tendency in the distributed system makes the online software lightweight, loosely coupled, reusable, modular, self-contained and easy to be extended. All the services in the SOA distributed online software system will send messages each to another directly without a traditional broker in the middle, which means that services could operate harmoniously and independently. ZeroMQ is chosen but not the only technical choice as the low-level communication middle-ware because of its high performance and convenient communication model while using Google Protocol Buffers as a marshaling library to unify the pattern of message contents. Considering the general requirement of JUNO, the concept of partition and segment are defined to ensure multiple small-scaled DAQs could run simultaneous and easy to join or leave. All running data except the raw physics events will be transmitted, processed and recorded to the database. High availability (HA) is also taken into account to solve the inevitable single point of failure (SPOF) in the distribution system. This paper will introduce all the core services' functionality and techniques in detail.

JUNO DAQ Readout and Event Building Research

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory(JUNO) experiment will develop an internationally leading neutrino experimental station to measure the order of neutrino mass and carry out many other scientific frontier studies. The entire experimental system includes the detector system, the electronics system, and the data acquisition (DAQ) system. Data flow is the core of JUNO DAQ system. Readout system and Event Building (EB) system are two key aspects of data flow. Based on the requirements analysis of JUNO DAQ, this paper proposes a data flow schema of distributed network readout and second-level event building. Focusing on the performance requirements of JUNO DAQ, the performance of the readout and event building module, the number of readout processes deployed on each node, and integration performance of the two modules are studied. The results of the research provide a reference for further optimization of the JUNO DAQ data flow framework

Bayesian method for inferring the impact of geographical distance on intensity of communication

Both theoretical models and empirical findings suggest that the intensity of communication among groups of people declines with their degree of geographical separation. There is some evidence that rather than decaying uniformly with distance, the intensity of communication might decline at different rates for shorter and longer distances. Using Bayesian LASSO for model selection, we introduce a statistical model for estimating the rate of communication decline with geographic distance that allows for discontinuities in this rate. We apply our method to an anonymized mobile phone communication dataset. Our results are potentially useful in settings where understanding social and spatial mixing of people is important, such as in cluster randomized trials design.

A method to determine algebraically integral Cayley digraphs on finite Abelian group

Researchers in the past have studied eigenvalues of Cayley digraphs or graphs. We are interested in characterizing Cayley digraphs on a finite Abelian group G whose eigenvalues are algebraic integers in a given number field K. And we succeed in finding a method to do so by proving Theorem 1. Also, the number of such Cayley digraphs is computed.

The Flash ADC system and PMT waveform reconstruction for the Daya Bay Experiment

To better understand the energy response of the Antineutrino Detector (AD), the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment installed a full Flash ADC readout system on one AD that allowed for simultaneous data taking with the current readout system. This paper presents the design, data acquisition, and simulation of the Flash ADC system, and focuses on the PMT waveform reconstruction algorithms. For liquid scintillator calorimetry, the most critical requirement to waveform reconstruction is linearity. Several common reconstruction methods were tested but the linearity performance was not satisfactory. A new method based on the deconvolution technique was developed with 1% residual non-linearity, which fulfills the requirement. The performance was validated with both data and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, and 1% consistency between them has been achieved.

Adaptive weak-value amplification with adjustable postselection

Weak-value amplification (WVA) has recently become an important technique for parameter estimation, owing to its ability to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio by amplifying extremely small signals with proper postselection strategies. In this paper, we propose an adaptive WVA scheme to achieve the highest Fisher information when using an unbalanced pointer. Different from previous schemes, the adaptive WVA scheme is associated with a real-time update on the postselection states with the help of feedback information from the outcomes, and the "extremely small" condition set on the parameter of interest is relaxed. By applying this scheme to a time-delay measurement scenario, we show by numerical simulation that the precision achieved in our scheme is several times higher than the standard WVA scheme. Our result might open a path for improving the WVA technique in a more flexible and robust way.

IcoRating: A Deep-Learning System for Scam ICO Identification

Cryptocurrencies (or digital tokens, digital currencies, e.g., BTC, ETH, XRP, NEO) have been rapidly gaining ground in use, value, and understanding among the public, bringing astonishing profits to investors. Unlike other money and banking systems, most digital tokens do not require central authorities. Being decentralized poses significant challenges for credit rating. Most ICOs are currently not subject to government regulations, which makes a reliable credit rating system for ICO projects necessary and urgent. In this paper, we introduce IcoRating, the first learning--based cryptocurrency rating system. We exploit natural-language processing techniques to analyze various aspects of 2,251 digital currencies to date, such as white paper content, founding teams, Github repositories, websites, etc. Supervised learning models are used to correlate the life span and the price change of cryptocurrencies with these features. For the best setting, the proposed system is able to identify scam ICO projects with 0.83 precision. We hope this work will help investors identify scam ICOs and attract more efforts in automatically evaluating and analyzing ICO projects.

Unsupervised Band Selection of Hyperspectral Images via Multi-dictionary Sparse Representation

Hyperspectral images have far more spectral bands than ordinary multispectral images. Rich band information provides more favorable conditions for the tremendous applications. However, significant increase in the dimensionality of spectral bands may lead to the curse of dimensionality, especially for classification applications. Furthermore, there are a large amount of redundant information among the raw image cubes due to water absorptions, sensor noises and other influence factors. Band selection is a direct and effective method to remove redundant information and reduce the spectral dimension for decreasing computational complexity and avoiding the curse of dimensionality. In this paper, we present a novel learning framework for band selection based on the idea of sparse representation. More specifically, first each band is approximately represented by the linear combination of other bands, then the original band image can be represented by a multi-dictionary learning mechanism. As a result, a group of weights can be obtained by sparse optimization for all bands. Finally, the specific bands will be selected, if they get higher weights than other bands in the representation of the original image. Experimental results on three widely used hyperspectral datasets show that our proposed algorithm achieves better performance in hyperspectral image classification, when compared with other state-of-art band selection methods.

Photoelectron angular distribution from the high-order above-threshold ionization process in IR+XUV two-color laser fields

High-order above-threshold ionization (HATI) spectrum in IR+XUV two-color laser fields has been investigated. We found that the quantum features corresponding to the absorption of the XUV photon is well illustrated by a peculiar dip structure in the second plateau of the HATI spectrum. By the channel analysis, we show that the angular distribution of the spectrum is attributed to the coherent summation over contributions of different channels, and the dip structure in the spectrum is directly related to the absorption of one XUV photon of the ionized electron during the laser-assisted collision (LAC) with its parent ion in the two-color laser fields. Moreover, by employing the saddle-point approximation, we obtain the classical energy orbit equation, and find that the dip structure comes from the fact that the LAC is limited at a certain direction by the momentum conservation law as the electron absorbs one XUV photon during the collision, where the probability of the HATI gets its minimum value. Finally, we find that the interference pattern in the whole spectrum is attributed to the interference of different orbits at collision moments $t_0$ and $2π/ω_1-t_0$ in the LAC process.
