Test of the JUNO 20-inch PMTs during Installation

Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in neutrino experiments. As a new-generation neutrino observatory, JUNO requires an excellent energy resolution of 3% at 1 MeV. This will be realized with a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector instrumented with more than 20000 20-inch PMTs and 25600 3-inch PMTs. These PMTs were successfully installed in JUNO from October 2022 to December 2024. During the installation, seven test campaigns were performed to validate the PMT functionality, including measurements dark count rate, gain, waveform, and charge spectrum. In this paper, we present the implementation of these tests and the corresponding results for the 20-inch PMTs throughout the installation process.

Baichuan-M4: A Clinical-Grade Medical Agent System for Continuous Care

Baichuan-M4 is Baichuan Intelligence's clinical-grade medical large model, designed for continuous care rather than single-turn medical question answering. It is built as a coordinated medical agent system around three pillars: Baichuan-Harness, a unified runtime that keeps reinforcement-learning training and real-world deployment consistent while enforcing action constraints, tool use, long-term patient memory, and multi-agent coordination; a core reasoning model trained with a continuous-care reinforcement-learning framework that integrates span-level reward modeling (SPAR++), reasoning-path compression, curriculum learning, and stabilized policy optimization; and a clinical tool layer for patient-memory management, authoritative evidence-based retrieval, and multimodal medical perception across documents, X-rays, and dermatology. On a cross-dimensional medical evaluation suite, Baichuan-M4 attains leading results in static medical knowledge and safety, dynamic OSCE-style consultation, long-context clinical memory, evidence-based retrieval, medical document OCR, and multimodal image understanding, while lowering the hallucination rate to 3.3%.

Multiresonant Membrane Metasurfaces for Multifunctional Fingerprint Recognition and Real-time Biochemical Tracking

Label-free identification and real-time tracking of biochemical substances became critical for molecular diagnostics and chemical analysis, yet conventional resonant terahertz metasurface sensing relies on a single resonance, limiting spectral selectivity and dynamic capability. Here, we suggest multiresonant membrane metasurfaces and implement them for simultaneous static molecular fingerprint retrieval and dynamic reaction monitoring within a single pixel. We consider a membrane metasurface supporting multiple quasi-bound states in the continuum designed at target frequencies and enabling the tailoring of the field enhancement and frequency-selective interaction with target analytes. As a proof-of-concept, we achieve label-free detection of the dual fingerprint absorption features of pefloxacin at 0.78 THz and 0.99 THz, and real-time tracking of vitamin C oxidation and denaturation under ambient conditions. The kinetic profiles extracted from the THz amplitude evolution show excellent agreement with nonlinear reaction models, demonstrating quantitative biochemical tracking capabilities. Our results establish a versatile and scalable THz photonic platform that unifies static fingerprint identification and dynamic reaction monitoring, paving the way toward integrated on-chip biochemical analytics and multifunctional metasurface sensors.

A correction adaptive two-grid finite element method for nonselfadjoint or indefinite elliptic problems

We propose, analyze, and numerically validate a correction adaptive two-grid finite element method (CAT-GFEM) for nonselfadjoint or indefinite elliptic problems. In contrast to the adaptive two-grid finite element method (ATGFEM) of Li and Zhang [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 43 (2021), pp. A908-A928], which is restricted to symmetric positive-definite problems, the proposed method introduces an additional correction step that solves a small-scale discrete residual problem on the coarse mesh. This step entails negligible additional computational cost and allows us to show that the L2-norm error of the corrected discrete solution is a higher-order of the energy-norm error of the discrete solution. Using this result, we prove a contraction property for a suitable sum of quasi-errors on two successive adaptive meshes and establish convergence of the method. Numerical experiments illustrate the improved effectiveness and robustness of our method in comparison with ATGFEM.

Structure-Adaptive Sparse Diffusion in Voxel Space for 3D Medical Image Enhancement

Three-dimensional (3D) medical image enhancement, including denoising and super-resolution, is critical for clinical diagnosis in CT, PET, and MRI. Although diffusion models have shown remarkable success in 2D medical imaging, scaling them to high-resolution 3D volumes remains computationally prohibitive due to lengthy diffusion trajectories over high-dimensional volumetric data. We observe that in conditional enhancement, strong anatomical priors in the degraded input render dense noise schedules largely redundant. Leveraging this insight, we propose a sparse voxel-space diffusion framework that trains and samples on a compact set of uniformly subsampled timesteps. The network predicts clean data directly on the data manifold, supervised in velocity space for stable gradient scaling. A lightweight Structure-aware Trajectory Modulation (STM) module recalibrates time embeddings at each network block based on local anatomical content, enabling structure-adaptive denoising over the shared sparse schedule. Operating directly in voxel space, our framework preserves fine anatomical detail without lossy compression while achieving up to $10\times$ training acceleration. Experiments on four datasets spanning CT, PET, and MRI demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on both denoising and super-resolution tasks. Our code is publicly available at: https://github.com/mirthAI/sparse-3d-diffusion.

Enhance-then-Balance Modality Collaboration for Robust Multimodal Sentiment Analysis

Multimodal sentiment analysis (MSA) integrates heterogeneous text, audio, and visual signals to infer human emotions. While recent approaches leverage cross-modal complementarity, they often struggle to fully utilize weaker modalities. In practice, dominant modalities tend to overshadow non-verbal ones, inducing modality competition and limiting overall contributions. This imbalance degrades fusion performance and robustness under noisy or missing modalities. To address this, we propose a novel model, Enhance-then-Balance Modality Collaboration framework (EBMC). EBMC improves representation quality via semantic disentanglement and cross-modal enhancement, strengthening weaker modalities. To prevent dominant modalities from overwhelming others, an Energy-guided Modality Coordination mechanism achieves implicit gradient rebalancing via a differentiable equilibrium objective. Furthermore, Instance-aware Modality Trust Distillation estimates sample-level reliability to adaptively modulate fusion weights, ensuring robustness. Extensive experiments demonstrate that EBMC achieves state-of-the-art or competitive results and maintains strong performance under missing-modality settings.

Are Emotion and Rhetoric Neurons in LLM? Neuron Recognition and Adaptive Masking for Emotion-Rhetoric Prediction Steering

Accurate comprehension and controllable generation of emotion and rhetoric are pivotal for enhancing the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs). Existing studies mostly rely on external optimizations, lacking in-depth exploration of internal representation mechanisms, thus failing to achieve fine-grained steering at the neuron level. A handful of works on neurons are confined to emotions, neglecting rhetoric neurons and their intrinsic connections. Traditional neuron masking also exhibits counterintuitive phenomena, making reliable verification of neuron functionality infeasible. To address these issues, we systematically investigate the neurons representation mechanisms and inherent associations of 6 emotion categories and 4 core rhetorical devices. We propose a neuron identification framework that integrates multi-dimensional screening, and design an adaptive masking method incorporating dynamic filtering, attenuation masking, and feedback optimization, enabling reliable causal validation of neuron functionality.Through neuron regulation, we achieve directed induction of non-target sentences and enhancement of emotion tasks via rhetoric neurons. Experiments on 5 commonly used datasets validate the effectiveness of our method, providing a novel paradigm for the fine-grained steering of emotion and rhetoric expressions in LLMs.

Dynamic Emotion and Personality Profiling for Multimodal Deception Detection

Deception detection is of great significance for ensuring information security and conducting public opinion analysis, with personality factors and emotion cues playing a critical role. However, existing methods lack sample-level dynamic annotations for emotions and personality. In this paper, we propose an innovative multi-model multi-prompt annotation scheme and a strict label quality evaluation standard, and establish a multimodal joint detection dataset DDEP for deception, emotion, and personality. Meanwhile, we propose Rel-DDEP, an adaptive reliability-weighted fusion framework. Our framework quantifies uncertainty by mapping modal features to a high-dimensional Gaussian distribution space. It then performs reliability-weighted fusion and incorporates an alignment module and a sorting constraint module to achieve joint detection of deception, emotion, and personality. Experimental results on the MDPE and DDEP datasets show that our Rel-DDEP significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art baseline models in three tasks. The F1 score of the deception detection increases by 2.53%, that of the emotion detection increases by 2.66%, and that of the personality detection increases by 9.30%. The experiments fully verify the necessity of annotating dynamic emotion and personality labels for each sample and the effectiveness of reliability-weighted fusion.

TRIDENT: Enhancing Large Language Model Safety with Tri-Dimensional Diversified Red-Teaming Data Synthesis

Large Language Models (LLMs) excel in various natural language processing tasks but remain vulnerable to generating harmful content or being exploited for malicious purposes. Although safety alignment datasets have been introduced to mitigate such risks through supervised fine-tuning (SFT), these datasets often lack comprehensive risk coverage. Most existing datasets focus primarily on lexical diversity while neglecting other critical dimensions. To address this limitation, we propose a novel analysis framework to systematically measure the risk coverage of alignment datasets across three essential dimensions: Lexical Diversity, Malicious Intent, and Jailbreak Tactics. We further introduce TRIDENT, an automated pipeline that leverages persona-based, zero-shot LLM generation to produce diverse and comprehensive instructions spanning these dimensions. Each harmful instruction is paired with an ethically aligned response, resulting in two datasets: TRIDENT-Core, comprising 26,311 examples, and TRIDENT-Edge, with 18,773 examples. Fine-tuning Llama 3.1-8B on TRIDENT-Edge demonstrates substantial improvements, achieving an average 14.29% reduction in Harm Score, and a 20% decrease in Attack Success Rate compared to the best-performing baseline model fine-tuned on the WildBreak dataset.

Hybrid Real-Imaginary Time Evolution for Low-Depth Hamiltonian Simulation in Quantum Optimization

Counterdiabatic (CD) driving is a powerful technique for accelerating adiabatic quantum computing. However, it becomes self-limiting in complex optimizations like the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model: long evolution times $T$ needed to traverse crossings force the CD strength to scale as $1/T$, causing it to vanish before convergence and wasting the quantum resources invested in its implementation. We break this trade-off with a Hybrid adaptive variational quantum dynamics simulation (HAVQDS). HAVQDS combines adaptive real-time evolution for circuit compression with imaginary-time steps that suppress excitations at no extra gate cost. For the SK model (6--14 qubits), HAVQDS achieves higher approximation ratios than adiabatic or CD approaches, while reducing CNOT counts by 1--2 orders of magnitude, enabling high-fidelity quantum optimization.

LASQ: A Low-resource Aspect-based Sentiment Quadruple Extraction Dataset

In recent years, aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) has made rapid progress and shown strong practical value. However, existing research and benchmarks are largely concentrated on high-resource languages, leaving fine-grained sentiment extraction in low-resource languages under-explored. To address this gap, we constructed the first Low-resource languages Aspect-based Sentiment Quadruple dataset, named LASQ, which includes two low-resource languages: Uzbek and Uyghur. Secondly, it includes a fine-grained target-aspect-opinion-sentiment quadruple extraction task. To facilitate future research, we designed a grid-tagging model that integrates syntactic knowledge. This model incorporates part-of-speech (POS) and dependency knowledge into the model through our designed Syntax Knowledge Embedding Module (SKEM), thereby alleviating the lexical sparsity problem caused by agglutinative languages. Experiments on LASQ demonstrate consistent gains over competitive baselines, validating both the dataset's utility and the effectiveness of the proposed modeling approach.

Staged Laser Wakefield Acceleration for Saturated Lasing of Bandwidth-Tunable Free-Electron Lasers from EUV to X-ray

Free-electron lasers (FELs) provide a revolutionary tool for capturing the structure and dynamics of matter in real time at the atomic scale. The size and cost of FELs can be substantially reduced by using laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), which offers acceleration gradients orders of magnitude beyond radiofrequency technology, producing multi-GeV electron beams within tens of centimeters. This compactness opens the possibility of integrating multiple operating modes - from the EUV to X-rays including broadband operation - into one facility. Realizing this vision, however, faces key challenges: current LWFA bunches are too short to sustain sufficient radiation slippage, limiting FEL pulse energy at EUV wavelengths, while the large energy spread and emittance make X-ray lasing even more demanding. Here we present a LWFA-driven FEL scheme that addresses these challenges, enabling multi-mode operation spanning different wavelengths and bandwidths within a single facility. The scheme employs staged acceleration to reach multi-GeV energies while preserving beam quality, combined with a dual-chicane beamline that stretches the bunch to mitigate the radiation slippage for EUV FEL and tailors the energy chirp for diverse FEL bandwidth modes. Simulations demonstrate that the scheme can generate high-quality electron beams with energies up to 7 GeV and tunable energy chirp, enabling both FEL saturation from the EUV to X-ray wavelengths and large bandwidth operation with a bandwidth of up to 11%. This work provides a roadmap for compact, multi-mode FELs based on plasma acceleration, and the high-energy, high-quality beams achieved also point toward compact injectors for next-generation storage-ring light sources.

Code-MIE: A Code-style Model for Multimodal Information Extraction with Scene Graph and Entity Attribute Knowledge Enhancement

With the rapid development of large language models (LLMs), more and more researchers have paid attention to information extraction based on LLMs. However, there are still some spaces to improve in the existing related methods. First, existing multimodal information extraction (MIE) methods usually employ natural language templates as the input and output of LLMs, which mismatch with the characteristics of information tasks that mostly include structured information such as entities and relations. Second, although a few methods have adopted structured and more IE-friendly code-style templates, they just explored their methods on text-only IE rather than multimodal IE. Moreover, their methods are more complex in design, requiring separate templates to be designed for each task. In this paper, we propose a Code-style Multimodal Information Extraction framework (Code-MIE) which formalizes MIE as unified code understanding and generation. Code-MIE has the following novel designs: (1) Entity attributes such as gender, affiliation are extracted from the text to guide the model to understand the context and role of entities. (2) Images are converted into scene graphs and visual features to incorporate rich visual information into the model. (3) The input template is constructed as a Python function, where entity attributes, scene graphs and raw text compose of the function parameters. In contrast, the output template is formalized as Python dictionaries containing all extraction results such as entities, relations, etc. To evaluate Code-MIE, we conducted extensive experiments on the M$^3$D, Twitter-15, Twitter-17, and MNRE datasets. The results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to six competing baseline models, with 61.03\% and 60.49\% on the English and Chinese datasets of M$^3$D, and 76.04\%, 88.07\%, and 73.94\% on the other three datasets.

NFT Games: an Empirical Look into the Play-to-Earn Model

The past decade has witnessed the burgeoning and continuous development of blockchain and its applications. Besides various cryptocurrencies, an industry that has quickly embraced this trend is gaming. Thanks to the support of blockchain, games have started to incorporate non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can enable a new gaming model, play-to-earn (P2E), which incentivizes users to participate and play. While recent studies looked at several NFT games qualitatively and individually, an in-depth understanding is still missing, particularly on how the P2E model has transformed traditional games. In this work, we set to conduct a measurement study of NFT games, aiming to gain a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of P2E in practice. For this purpose, we collect and analyze relevant NFT transaction data from the underlying blockchain (e.g., Ethereum) of 12 games, supplemented with various data scraped from their websites. Our study shows that (1) a few top wallets control unproportionally high percentage of NFTs, and the majority of wallets own only one or two NFTs and do not actively trade; (2) promotion events do boost the trade amount and the NFT price for some games, but their effect does not sustain; and (3) few players actually earned a profit, and players in 9 out of 12 games who traded NFTs have a negative profit on average. Motivated by these findings, we further investigate effective incentive mechanisms based on game theory to improve the trading profits that players can earn from these NFT games. Both modeling and simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed incentive mechanism.

Attention to details, logits to truth: visual-aware attention and logits enhancement to mitigate hallucinations in LVLMs

Existing Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) exhibit insufficient visual attention, leading to hallucinations. To alleviate this problem, some previous studies adjust and amplify visual attention. These methods present a limitation that boosting attention for all visual tokens inevitably increases attention to task irrelevant tokens. To tackle this challenge, we propose a training free attentional intervention algorithm to enhance the attention of task-relevant tokens based on the argument that task-relevant tokens generally demonstrate high visual-textual similarities. Specifically, the vision-text cross-attention submatrices, which represent visual-textual correlations, are extracted to construct the reweighting matrices to reallocate attention. Besides, to enhance the contribution of visual tokens, we inject visual attention values into the beam search decoding to identify solutions with higher visual attention. Extensive experiments demonstrate that this method significantly reduces hallucinations across mainstream LVLMs, while preserving the accuracy and coherence of generated content.

KVmix: Gradient-Based Layer Importance-Aware Mixed-Precision Quantization for KV Cache

The high memory demands of the Key-Value (KV) Cache during the inference of Large Language Models (LLMs) severely restrict their deployment in resource-constrained platforms. Quantization can effectively alleviate the memory pressure caused by KV Cache. However, existing methods either rely on static one-size-fits-all precision allocation or fail to dynamically prioritize critical KV in long-context tasks, forcing memory-accuracy-throughput tradeoffs. In this work, we propose a novel mixed-precision quantization method for KV Cache named KVmix. KVmix leverages gradient-based importance analysis to evaluate how individual Key and Value projection matrices affect the model loss, enabling layer-specific bit-width allocation for mix-precision quantization. It dynamically prioritizes higher precision for important layers while aggressively quantizing less influential ones, achieving a tunable balance between accuracy and efficiency. KVmix also introduces a dynamic long-context optimization strategy that adaptively keeps full-precision KV pairs for recent pivotal tokens and compresses older ones, achieving high-quality sequence generation with low memory usage. Additionally, KVmix provides efficient low-bit quantization and CUDA kernels to optimize computational overhead. On LLMs such as Llama and Mistral, KVmix achieves near-lossless inference performance with extremely low quantization configuration (Key 2.19bit Value 2.38bit), while delivering a remarkable 4.9x memory compression and a 5.3x speedup in inference throughput.

EVOREFUSE: Evolutionary Prompt Optimization for Evaluation and Mitigation of LLM Over-Refusal to Pseudo-Malicious Instructions

Large language models (LLMs) frequently refuse to respond to pseudo-malicious instructions: semantically harmless input queries triggering unnecessary LLM refusals due to conservative safety alignment, significantly impairing user experience. Collecting such instructions is crucial for evaluating and mitigating over-refusals, but existing instruction curation methods, like manual creation or instruction rewriting, either lack scalability or fail to produce sufficiently diverse and effective refusal-inducing prompts. To address these limitations, we introduce EVOREFUSE, a prompt optimization approach that generates diverse pseudo-malicious instructions consistently eliciting confident refusals across LLMs. EVOREFUSE employs an evolutionary algorithm exploring the instruction space in more diverse directions than existing methods via mutation strategies and recombination, and iteratively evolves seed instructions to maximize evidence lower bound on LLM refusal probability. Using EVOREFUSE, we create two novel datasets: EVOREFUSE-TEST, a benchmark of 582 pseudo-malicious instructions that outperforms the next-best benchmark with 85.34% higher average refusal triggering rate across 9 LLMs without a safety-prior system prompt, 34.86% greater lexical diversity, and 40.03% improved LLM response confidence scores; and EVOREFUSE-ALIGN, which provides 3,000 pseudo-malicious instructions with responses for supervised and preference-based alignment training. With supervised fine-tuning on EVOREFUSE-ALIGN, LLAMA3.1-8B-INSTRUCT achieves up to 29.85% fewer over-refusals than models trained on the second-best alignment dataset, without compromising safety. Our analysis with EVOREFUSE-TEST reveals models trigger over-refusals by overly focusing on sensitive keywords while ignoring broader context. Our code and datasets are available at https://github.com/FishT0ucher/EVOREFUSE.
