Real-time separation of non-stationary sound fields on spheres

The sound field separation methods can separate the target field from the interfering noises, facilitating the study of the acoustic characteristics of the target source, which is placed in a noisy environment. However, most of the existing sound field separation methods are derived in the frequency-domain, thus are best suited for separating stationary sound fields. In this paper, a time-domain sound field separation method is developed that can separate the non-stationary sound field generated by the target source over a sphere in real-time. A spherical array sets up a boundary between the target source and the interfering sources, such that the outgoing field on the array is only generated by the target source. The proposed method decomposes the pressure and the radial particle velocity measured by the array into spherical harmonics coefficients, and recoveries the target outgoing field based on the time-domain relationship between the decomposition coefficients and the theoretically derived spatial filter responses. Simulations show the proposed method can separate non-stationary sound fields both in free field and room environments, and over a longer duration with small errors. The proposed method could serve as a foundation for developing future time-domain spatial sound field manipulation algorithms.

Supercooling-enabled giant and tunable thermal rectification ratio of a phase change thermal diode

Phase change thermal diodes (PCTD) suffer from fairly low thermal rectification ratio, which hampers their widespread utilization as thermal management and control units for cutting-edge technologies, encompassing photovoltaics, thermoelectric modules, batteries and other miniaturized electronic products, etc. It is thus indispensable to explore a high-performance PCTD. Herein, a tunable and scalable PCTD is modeled, theoretically analyzed, fabricated and experimentally executed, accessing an unprecedented giant thermal rectification ratio of 3.0 at ambient temperature. With optimized length ratio and feasible assembly of two phase change terminals, the emerging physical states of thermal media continuously contribute to align the convective-intensified thermal conductive profiles, mandatory for heat flux manipulation within temperature bias of 10~40 °C. The most significant finding discloses the fact that supercooling elongates the overall workable temperature bias range, while manual supercooling release allows to tune the thermal rectification ratio at any temperature bias within 10~33 °C. Integrating the conventional asymmetric thermal transport mechanism with state-specific heat transfer hysteresis helps establish the novel governing mechanism.

Text-based Passwords Generated From Topological Graphic Passwords

Topological graphic passwords (Topsnut-gpws) are one of graph-type passwords, but differ from the existing graphical passwords, since Topsnut-gpws are saved in computer by algebraic matrices. We focus on the transformation between text-based passwords (TB-paws) and Topsnut-gpws in this article. Several methods for generating TB-paws from Topsnut-gpws are introduced; these methods are based on topological structures and graph coloring/labellings, such that authentications must have two steps: one is topological structure authentication, and another is text-based authentication. Four basic topological structure authentications are introduced and many text-based authentications follow Topsnut-gpws. Our methods are based on algebraic, number theory and graph theory, many of them can be transformed into polynomial algorithms. A new type of matrices for describing Topsnut-gpws is created here, and such matrices can produce TB-paws in complex forms and longer bytes. Estimating the space of TB-paws made by Topsnut-gpws is very important for application. We propose to encrypt dynamic networks and try to face: (1) thousands of nodes and links of dynamic networks; (2) large numbers of Topsnut-gpws generated by machines rather than human's hands. As a try, we apply spanning trees of dynamic networks and graphic groups (Topsnut-groups) to approximate the solutions of these two problems. We present some unknown problems in the end of the article for further research.

1.064-um-band up-conversion single-photon detector

Based on the technique of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, up-conversion single-photon detection at 1.064-μm is demonstrated. We have achieved a system photon detection efficiency (DE) of 32.5% with a very low noise count rate (NCR) of 45 counts per second (cps) by pumping with a 1.55-μm-band single frequency laser using the long-wavelength pumping technique and exploiting volume Bragg grating (VBG) as a narrow band filter. Replacing the VBG with a combination of adequate dielectric filters, a DE of up to 38% with a NCR of 700 cps is achieved, making the overall system more stable and practical. The up-conversion single-photon detector (SPD) operating at 1.064 μm can be a promising robust counter and find usage in many fields.

Integrated four-channel all-fiber up-conversion single-photon-detector with adjustable efficiency and dark count

Up-conversion single photon detector (UCSPD) has been widely used in many research fields including quantum key distribution (QKD), lidar, optical time domain reflectrometry (OTDR) and deep space communication. For the first time in laboratory, we have developed an integrated four-channel all-fiber UCSPD which can work in both free-running and gate modes. This compact module can satisfy different experimental demands with adjustable detection efficiency and dark count. We have characterized the key parameters of the UCSPD system.

Study of digital pulse shape discrimination method for n-γ separation of EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector

A digital pulse shape discrimination system based on a programmable module NI-5772 has been established and tested with EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector. The module was operated by means of running programs developed in LabVIEW with the sampling frequency up to 1.6GS/s. Standard gamma sources 22Na, 137Cs and 60Co were used to calibrate the EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector, and the gamma response function has been obtained. Digital algorithms for charge comparison method and zero-crossing method have been developed. The experimental results showed that both digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms could discriminate neutrons from gamma-rays. Moreover, the zero-crossing method shows better n-γ discrimination at 80 keVee and lower, whereas the charge comparison method gives better results at higher thresholds. In addition, the figure-of-merit (FOM) of two different dimension detectors were extracted at 9 energy thresholds, and it was found that the smaller one presented a better n-γ separation property for fission neutrons.

The study of neutron spectra in water bath from Pb target irradiated by 250MeV/u protons

The spallation neutrons were produced by the irradiation of Pb with 250 MeV protons. The Pb target was surrounded by water which was used to slow down the emitted neutrons. The moderated neutrons in the water bath were measured by using the resonance detectors of Au, Mn and In with Cd cover. According to the measured activities of the foils, the neutron flux at different resonance energy were deduced and the epithermal neutron spectra were proposed. Corresponding results calculated with the Monte Carlo code MCNPX were compared with the experimental data to check the validity of the code.

Four transformations on the Catalan triangle

In this paper, we define four transformations on the classical Catalan triangle $\mathcal{C}=(C_{n,k})_{n\geq k\geq 0}$ with $C_{n,k}=\frac{k+1}{n+1}\binom{2n-k}{n}$. The first three ones are based on the determinant and the forth is utilizing the permanent of a square matrix. It not only produces many known and new identities involving Catalan numbers, but also provides a new viewpoint on combinatorial triangles.

Multiple exciton generation in nano-crystals revisited: Consistent calculation of the yield based on pump-probe spectroscopy

Multiple exciton generation (MEG) is a process in which more than one exciton is generated upon the absorption of a high energy photon, typically higher than two times the band gap, in semiconductor nanocrystals. It can be observed experimentally using time resolved spectroscopy such as the transient absorption measurements. Quantification of the MEG yield is usu- ally done by assuming that the bi-exciton signal is twice the signal from a single exciton. Herein we show that this assumption is not always justified and may lead to significant errors in the estimated MEG yields. We develop a methodology to determine proper scaling factors to the signals from the transient absorption experiments. Using the methodology we find modest MEG yields in lead chalcogenide nanocrystals including the nanorods.
