$k$-Uniform states and quantum information masking

A pure state of $N$ parties with local dimension $d$ is called a $k$-uniform state if all the reductions to $k$ parties are maximally mixed. Based on the connections among $k$-uniform states, orthogonal arrays and linear codes, we give general constructions for $k$-uniform states. We show that when $d\geq 4k-2$ (resp. $d\geq 2k-1$) is a prime power, there exists a $k$-uniform state for any $N\geq 2k$ (resp. $2k\leq N\leq d+1$). Specially, we give the existence of $4,5$-uniform states for almost every $N$-qudits. Further, we generalize the concept of quantum information masking in bipartite systems given by [Modi \emph{et al.} {Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{120}, 230501 (2018)}] to $k$-uniform quantum information masking in multipartite systems, and we show that $k$-uniform states and quantum error-correcting codes can be used for $k$-uniform quantum information masking.

Low Tensor Train- and Low Multilinear Rank Approximations for De-speckling and Compression of 3D Optical Coherence Tomography Images

This paper proposes low tensor-train (TT) rank and low multilinear (ML) rank approximations for de-speckling and compression of 3D optical coherence tomography (OCT) images for a given compression ratio (CR). To this end, we derive the alternating direction method of multipliers based algorithms for the related problems constrained with the low TT- and low ML rank. Rank constraints are implemented through the Schatten-p (Sp) norm, p e {0, 1/2, 2/3, 1}, of unfolded matrices. We provide the proofs of global convergence towards a stationary point for both algorithms. Rank adjusted 3D OCT image tensors are finally approximated through tensor train- and Tucker alternating least squares decompositions. We comparatively validate the low TT- and low ML rank methods on twenty-two 3D OCT images with the JPEG2000 and 3D SPIHT compression methods, as well as with no compression 2D bilateral filtering (BF), 2D median filtering (MF), and enhanced low-rank plus sparse matrix decomposition (ELRpSD) methods. For the CR<10, the low Sp TT rank method with pe{0, 1/2, 2/3} yields either highest or comparable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and comparable or better contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), mean segmentation errors (SEs) of retina layers and expert-based image quality score (EIQS) than original image and image compression methods. It compares favorably in terms of CNR, fairly in terms of SE and EIQS with the no image compression methods. Thus, for CR<10 the low S2/3 TT rank approximation can be considered a good choice for visual inspection based diagnostics. For 2<CR<60, the low S1 ML rank method compares favorably in terms of SE with image compression methods and with 2D BF and ELRpSD. It is slightly inferior to 2D MF. Thus, for 2<CR<60, the low S1 ML rank approximation can be considered a good choice for segmentation based diagnostics either on-site or in the remote mode of operation.

Strong quantum nonlocality with entanglement

Strong quantum nonlocality was introduced recently as a stronger manifestation of nonlocality in multipartite systems through the notion of local irreducibility in all bipartitions. Known existence results for sets of strongly nonlocal orthogonal states are limited to product states. In this paper, based on the Rubik's cube, we give the first construction of such sets consisting of entangled states in $d\otimes d\otimes d$ for all $d\geq 3$. Consequently, we answer an open problem given by Halder \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{122}, 040403 (2019)], that is, orthogonal entangled bases that are strongly nonlocal do exist. Furthermore, we propose two entanglement-assisted protocols for local discrimination of our results. Each protocol consumes less entanglement resource than the teleportation-based protocol averagely. Our results exhibit the phenomenon of strong quantum nonlocality with entanglement.

Constructions of $k$-uniform states from mixed orthogonal arrays

We study $k$-uniform states in heterogeneous systems whose local dimensions are mixed. Based on the connections between mixed orthogonal arrays with certain minimum Hamming distance, irredundant mixed orthogonal arrays and $k$-uniform states, we present two constructions of $2$-uniform states in heterogeneous systems. We also construct a family of $3$-uniform states in heterogeneous systems, which solves a question posed in [D. Goyeneche et al., Phys. Rev. A 94, 012346 (2016)]. We also show two methods of generating $(k-1)$-uniform states from $k$-uniform states. Some new results on the existence and nonexistence of absolutely maximally entangled states are provided. For the applications, we present an orthogonal basis consisting of $k$-uniform states with minimum support. Moreover, we show that some $k$-uniform bases can not be distinguished by local operations and classical communications, and this shows quantum nonlocality with entanglement.

Unextendible product bases from tile structures and their local entanglement-assisted distinguishability

We completely characterize the condition when a tile structure provides an unextendible product basis (UPB), and construct UPBs of different large sizes in $\mathbb{C}^m\otimes\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\geq m\geq 3$. This solves an open problem in [S. Halder et al., Phys. Rev. A 99, 062329 (2019)]. As an application, we show that our UPBs of size $(mn-4\lfloor\frac{m-1}{2}\rfloor)$ in $\mathbb{C}^m\otimes\mathbb{C}^n$ can be perfectly distinguished by local operations and classical communications assisted with a $\lceil\frac{m}{2}\rceil\otimes\lceil\frac{m}{2}\rceil$ maximally entangled state.

Constructions of mutually unbiased entangled bases

We construct two mutually unbiased bases by maximally entangled states (MUMEB$s$) in $\mathbb{C}^{2}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{3}$. This is the first example of MUMEB$s$ in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ when $d\nmid d'$, namely $d'$ is not divisible by $d$. We show that they cannot be extended to four MUBs in $\mathbb{C}^6$. We propose a recursive construction of mutually unbiased bases formed by special entangled states with a fixed Schmidt number $k$ (MUSEB$k$s). It shows that $\min \{t_{1},t_{2}\}$ MUSEB$k_{1}k_{2}$s in $\mathbb{C}^{pd}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{qd'}$ can be constructed from $t_{1}$ MUSEB$k_{1}$s in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ and $t_{2}$ MUSEB$k_{2}$s in $\mathbb{C}^{p}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{q}$ for any $d,d',p,q$. Further, we show that three MUMEB$s$ exist in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ for any $d,d'$ with $d\mid d'$, and two MUMEB$s$ exist in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ for infinitely many $d,d'$ with $d\nmid d'$.

Constructions of unextendible entangled bases

We provide several constructions of special unextendible entangled bases with fixed Schmidt number $k$ (SUEB$k$) in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ for $2\leq k\leq d\leq d'$. We generalize the space decomposition method in Guo [Phys. Rev. A 94, 052302 (2016)], by proposing a systematic way of constructing new SUEB$k$s in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ for $2\leq k < d \leq d'$ or $2\leq k=d< d'$. In addition, we give a construction of a $(pqdd'-p(dd'-N))$-number SUEB$pk$ in $\mathbb{C}^{pd}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{qd'}$ from an $N$-number SUEB$k$ in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ for $p\leq q$ by using permutation matrices. We also connect a $(d(d'-1)+m)$-number UMEB in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ with an unextendible partial Hadamard matrix $H_{m\times d}$ with $m<d$, which extends the result in [Quantum Inf. Process. 16(3), 84 (2017)].

Star Formation Rate Indicators in Wide-Field Infrared Survey Preliminary Release

With the goal of investigating the degree to which theMIR luminosity in theWidefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) traces the SFR, we analyze 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 μm data in a sample of » 140,000 star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions covering a wide range in metallicity 7.66 < 12 + log(O/H) < 9.46, with redshift z < 0.4. These star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions are selected by matching the WISE Preliminary Release Catalog with the star-forming galaxy Catalog in SDSS DR8 provided by JHU/MPA 1.We study the relationship between the luminosity at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 μm from WISE and Hαluminosity in SDSS DR8. From these comparisons, we derive reference SFR indicators for use in our analysis. Linear correlations between SFR and the 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 μm luminosity are found, and calibrations of SFRs based on L(3.4), L(4.6), L(12) and L(22) are proposed. The calibrations hold for galaxies with verified spectral observations. The dispersion in the relation between 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 μm luminosity and SFR relates to the galaxy's properties, such as 4000 °A break and galaxy color.
