Short Circuit Current Constrained UC in High IBG-Penetrated Power Systems

Inverter Based Generators (IBGs) have been increasing significantly in power systems. Due to the demanding thermal rating of Power Electronics (PE), their contribution to the system Short Circuit Current (SCC) is much less than that from the conventional Synchronous Generators (SGs) thus reducing the system strength and posing challenges to system protection and stability. This paper proposes a Unit Commitment (UC) model with SCC constraint in high IBG-penetrated systems to ensure minimum operation cost while maintaining the SCC level at each bus in the system. The SCC from synchronous generators as well as the IBGs are explicitly modeled in the formulation leading to an SCC constraint involving decision-dependent matrix inverse. This highly nonlinear constraint is further reformulated into linear form conservatively. The influence of the SCC constraint on the system operation and its interaction with the frequency regulation are demonstrated through simulations on IEEE 30- and 118-bus systems.

NLO gravitational quartic-in-spin interaction

In this paper we derive for the first time the complete gravitational quartic-in-spin interaction of generic compact binaries at the next-to-leading order in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion. The derivation builds on the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects, and its recent extensions, in which new type of worldline couplings should be considered, as well as on the extension of the effective action of a spinning particle to quadratic order in the curvature. The latter extension entails a new Wilson coefficient that appears in this sector. This work pushes the precision frontier with spins at the fifth PN (5PN) order for maximally-spinning compact objects, and at the same time informs us of the gravitational Compton scattering with higher spins.

Efficient Calculation of Crossing Symmetric BCJ Tree Numerators

In this paper, we propose an improved method for directly calculating double-copy-compatible tree numerators in (super-)Yang-Mills and Yang-Mills-scalar theories. Our new scheme gets rid of any explicit dependence on reference orderings, restoring a form of crossing symmetry to the numerators. This in turn improves the computational efficiency of the algorithm, allowing us to go well beyond the number of external particles accessible with the reference order based methods. Motivated by a parallel study of one-loop BCJ numerators from forward limits, we explore the generalization to include a pair of fermions. To improve the accessiblity of the new algorithm, we provide a Mathematica package that implements the numerator construction. The structure of the computation also provides for a straightforward introduction of minimally-coupled massive particles potentially useful for future computations in both classical and quantum gravity.

Enhanced Cyber-Physical Security Using Attack-resistant Cyber Nodes and Event-triggered Moving Target Defence

This paper outlines a cyber-physical authentication strategy to protect power system infrastructure against false data injection (FDI) attacks. We demonstrate that it is feasible to use small, low-cost, yet highly attack-resistant security chips as measurement nodes, enhanced with an event-triggered moving target defence (MTD), to offer effective cyber-physical security. At the cyber layer, the proposed solution is based on the MULTOS Trust-Anchor chip, using an authenticated encryption protocol, offering cryptographically protected and chained reports at up to 12/s. The availability of the trust-anchors, allows the grid controller to delegate aspects of passive anomaly detection, supporting local as well as central alarms. In this context, a distributed event-triggered MTD protocol is implemented at the physical layer to complement cyber side enhancement. This protocol applies a distributed anomaly detection scheme based on Holt-Winters seasonal forecasting in combination with MTD implemented via inductance perturbation. The scheme is shown to be effective at preventing or detecting a wide range of attacks against power system measurement system.

Challenges and opportunities of inertia estimation and forecasting in low-inertia power systems

Accurate inertia estimates and forecasts are crucial to support the system operation in future low-inertia power systems. A large literature on inertia estimation methods is available. This paper aims to provide an overview and classification of inertia estimation methods. The classification considers the time horizon the methods are applicable to, i.e., offline post mortem, online real time and forecasting methods, and the scope of the inertia estimation, e.g., system-wide, regional, generation, demand, individual resource. Shortcomings of the existing inertia estimation methods have been identified and suggestions for future work have been made.

Open associahedra and scattering forms

We continue the study of open associahedra associated with bi-color scattering amplitudes initiated in arXiv:1912.08307. We focus on the facet geometries of the open associahedra, uncovering many new phenomena such as fiber-product geometries. We then provide novel recursion procedures for calculating the canonical form of open associahedra, generalizing recursion relations for bounded polytopes to unbounded polytopes.

Stealthy MTD Against Unsupervised Learning-based Blind FDI Attacks in Power Systems

This paper examines how moving target defences (MTD) implemented in power systems can be countered by unsupervised learning-based false data injection (FDI) attack and how MTD can be combined with physical watermarking to enhance the system resilience. A novel intelligent attack, which incorporates density-based spatial clustering and dimensionality reduction, is developed and shown to be effective in maintaining stealth in the presence of traditional MTD strategies. In resisting this new type of attack, a novel implementation of MTD combining with physical watermarking is proposed by adding Gaussian watermark into physical plant parameters to drive detection of traditional and intelligent FDI attacks, while remaining hidden to the attackers and limiting the impact on system operation and stability.

Event-triggered distributed MPC for resilient voltage control of an islanded microgrid

This paper addresses the problem of distributed secondary voltage control of an islanded microgrid (MG) from a cyber-physical perspective. An event-triggered distributed model predictive control (DMPC) scheme is designed to regulate the voltage magnitude of each distributed generators (DGs) in order to achieve a better trade-off between the control performance and communication and computation burdens. By using two novel event triggering conditions that can be easily embedded into the DMPC for the application of MG control, the computation and communication burdens are significantly reduced with negligible compromise of control performance. In addition, to reduce the sensor cost and to eliminate the negative effects of non-linearity, an adaptive non-asymptotic observer is utilized to estimate the internal and output signals of each DG. Thanks to the deadbeat observation property, the observer can be applied periodically to cooperate with the DMPC-based voltage regulator. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control method has been tested on a simple configuration with 4 DGs and the modified IEEE-13 test system through several representative scenarios.

Resilient Secondary Voltage Control of Islanded Microgrids: An ESKBF-Based Distributed Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control Approach

This paper proposes a distributed secondary voltage control method based on extended state Kalman-Bucy filter (ESKBF) and fast terminal sliding mode (FTSM) control for the resilient operation of an islanded microgrid (MG) with inverter-based distributed generations (DGs). To tackle the co-existence of multiple uncertainties, a unified modelling framework is proposed to represent the set of different types of disturbances, including parameter perturbation, measurement noise, and immeasurably external variables, by an extended state method. Kalman-Bucy filter is then applied to accurately estimate the state information of the extended DG model. In addition, based on the accurate estimation, a fast terminal sliding mode (FTSM) surface with terminal attractors is designed to maintain the system stability and accelerate the convergence of consensus tracking, which significantly improves the performance of secondary voltage control under both normal and plug-and-play operation. Finally, case studies are conducted in both MATLAB/Simulink and an experimental testbed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Modular Medium Voltage AC to Low Voltage DC Converter for Extreme Fast Charging Applications

A modular and scalable converter for medium voltage (MV) AC to low voltage (LV) DC power conversion is proposed; single-phase-modules (SPMs), each consisting of an active-front-end (AFE) stage and an isolated DC-DC stage, are connected in input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) configuration to reach desired voltage and power capacity. In prior art, high-speed bidirectional communication among modules and a centralized controller is required to ensure module-level voltage and power balancing, which severely limits the scalability and practical realization of higher voltage and higher power systems. Moreover, large capacitors are used to suppress double-line-frequency voltage variations on the common MV DC bus shared by the AFE and the DC-DC stage originating from AC power pulsations through the SPMs. We propose a comprehensive controller which achieves voltage and power balancing using complete decentralized control of the DC-DC stages based on only local sensor feedback and the AFE stages are controlled using feedback of only the LV DC output. Furthermore, reduced capacitor requirement on the MV DC bus is achieved through design and control. The proposed method is validated through simulation and experimental results.

One-loop Correlators and BCJ Numerators from Forward Limits

We present new formulas for one-loop ambitwistor-string correlators for gauge theories in any even dimension with arbitrary combinations of gauge bosons, fermions and scalars running in the loop. Our results are driven by new all-multiplicity expressions for tree-level two-fermion correlators in the RNS formalism that closely resemble the purely bosonic ones. After taking forward limits of tree-level correlators with an additional pair of fermions/bosons, one-loop correlators become combinations of Lorentz traces in vector and spinor representations. Identities between these two types of traces manifest all supersymmetry cancellations and the power counting of loop momentum. We also obtain parity-odd contributions from forward limits with chiral fermions. One-loop numerators satisfying the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) duality for diagrams with linearized propagators can be extracted from such correlators using the well-established tree-level techniques in Yang-Mills theory coupled to biadjoint scalars. Finally, we obtain streamlined expressions for BCJ numerators up to seven points using multiparticle fields.

On Positive Geometry and Scattering Forms for Matter Particles

We initiate the study of positive geometry and scattering forms for tree-level amplitudes with matter particles in the (anti-)fundamental representation of the color/flavor group. As a toy example, we study the bi-color scalar theory, which supplements the bi-adjoint theory with scalars in the (anti-)fundamental representations of both groups. Using a recursive construction we obtain a class of unbounded polytopes called open associahedra (or associahedra with certain facets at infinity) whose canonical form computes amplitudes in bi-color theory, for arbitrary number of legs and flavor assignments. In addition, we discuss the duality between color factors and wedge products, or "color is kinematics", for amplitudes with matter particles as well.

Value of Point-of-load Voltage Control for Enhanced Frequency Response in Future GB Power System

The need for Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) is expected to increase significantly in future low-carbon Great Britain (GB) power system. One way to provide EFR is to use power electronic compensators (PECs) for point-of-load voltage control (PVC) to exploit the voltage dependence of loads. This paper investigates the techno-economic feasibility of such technology in future GB power system by quantifying the total EFR obtainable through deploying PVC in the urban domestic sector, the investment cost of the installment and the economic and environmental benefits of using PVC. The quantification is based on a stochastic domestic demand model and generic medium and low-voltage distribution networks for the urban areas of GB and a stochastic unit commitment (SUC) model with constraints for secure post-fault frequency evolution is used for the value assessment. Two future energy scenarios in the backdrop of 2030 with `smart' and `non-smart' control of electric vehicles and heat pumps, under different levels of penetration of battery energy storage system (BESS) are considered to assess the value of PEC, as well as the associated payback period. It is demonstrated that PVC could effectively complement BESS towards EFR provision in future GB power system.

Optimal Portfolio of Distinct Frequency-Response Services in Low-Inertia Systems

A reduced level of system inertia due to renewable integration increases the need for cost-effective provision of ancillary services, such as Frequency Response (FR). In this paper we propose a closed-form solution to the differential equation describing frequency dynamics, which allows to obtain frequency-security algebraic constraints to be implemented in optimisation routines. This is done while considering any finite number of FR services with distinguished characteristics, such as different delivery times and activation delays. The problem defined by these frequency-security constraints can be formulated as a Mixed-Integer Second-Order Cone Program (MISOCP), which can be efficiently handled by off-the-shelf conic optimisation solvers. This paper also takes into account the uncertainty in inertia contribution from the demand side by formulating the frequency-security conditions as chance constraints, for which an exact convex reformulation is provided. Finally, case studies highlighting the effectiveness of this frequency-secured formulation are presented.

Towards Optimal System Scheduling with Synthetic Inertia Provision from Wind Turbines

The undergoing transition from conventional to converter-interfaced renewable generation leads to significant challenges in maintaining frequency stability due to declining system inertia. In this paper, a novel control framework for Synthetic Inertia (SI) provision from Wind Turbines (WTs) is proposed, which eliminates the secondary frequency dip and allows the dynamics of SI from WTs to be analytically integrated into the system frequency dynamics. Furthermore, analytical system frequency constraints with SI provision from WTs are developed and incorporated into a stochastic system scheduling model, which enables the provision of SI from WTs to be dynamically optimized on a system level. Several case studies are carried out on a Great Britain 2030 power system with different penetration levels of wind generation and inclusion of frequency response requirements in order to assess the performance of the proposed model and analyze the influence of the improved SI control scheme on the potential secondary frequency dip. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of SI provision from WTs into UC can drastically impact the overall system costs.

Economic Value of Inertia in Low-Carbon Power Systems

Most renewable energy sources (RES) do not provide any inertial response. Their integration in a power grid implies a highly reduced level of system inertia, which leads to a deteriorated frequency performance. Then, the requirement for frequency response is significantly increased in order to maintain frequency security. Alternatively, enhanced provision of inertia from auxiliary sources may alleviate this problem. However, the benefits of inertia provision are not yet fully understood. In this paper, an inertia-dependent Stochastic Unit Commitment (SUC) tool is applied to quantify the economic value of inertia. The results demonstrate that enhanced provision of inertia would lead to significant economic savings, although these savings vary under different system conditions. These results should be brought to the attention of both market operators and investors, in order to inform the design of an ancillary-services market for inertia and the investment in auxiliary provision of inertia.

Optimal Scheduling of Frequency Services Considering a Variable Largest-Power-Infeed-Loss

Low levels of inertia due to increasing renewable penetration bring several challenges, such as the higher need for Primary Frequency Response (PFR). A potential solution to mitigate this problem consists on reducing the largest possible power loss in the grid. This paper develops a novel modelling framework to analyse the benefits of such approach. A new frequency-constrained Stochastic Unit Commitment (SUC) is proposed here, which allows to dynamically reduce the largest possible loss in the optimisation problem. Furthermore, the effect of load damping is included by means of an approximation, while its effect is typically neglected in previous frequency-secured-UC studies. Through several case studies, we demonstrate that reducing the largest loss could significantly decrease operational cost and carbon emissions in the future Great Britain's grid.

Pricing inertia and Frequency Response with diverse dynamics in a Mixed-Integer Second-Order Cone Programming formulation

Low levels of system inertia in power grids with significant penetration of non-synchronous Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have increased the risk of frequency instability. The provision of a certain type of ancillary services such as inertia and Frequency Response (FR) is needed at all times, to maintain system frequency within secure limits if the loss of a large power infeed were to occur. In this paper we propose a frequency-secured optimisation framework for the procurement of inertia and FR with diverse dynamics, which enables to apply a marginal-pricing scheme for these services. This pricing scheme, deduced from a Mixed-Integer Second-Order Cone Program (MISOCP) formulation that represents frequency-security constraints, allows for the first time to appropriately value multi-speed FR.
