Hardware/Software Co-monitoring

Hardware/Software (HW/SW) interfaces, mostly implemented as devices and device drivers, are pervasive in various computer systems. Nowadays HW/SW interfaces typically undergo intensive testing and validation before release, but they are still unreliable and insecure when deployed together with computer systems to end users. Escaped logic bugs, hardware transient failures, and malicious exploits are prevalent in HW/SW interactions, making the entire system vulnerable and unstable. We present HW/SW co-monitoring, a runtime co-verification approach to detecting failures and malicious exploits in device/driver interactions. Our approach utilizes a formal device model (FDM), a transaction-level model derived from the device specification, to shadow the real device execution. Based on the co-execution of the device and FDM, HW/SW co-monitoring carries out two-tier runtime checking: (1) device checking checks if the device behaviors conform to the FDM behaviors; (2) property checking detects invalid driver commands issued to the device by verifying system properties against driver/device interactions. We have applied HW/SW co-monitoring to five widely-used devices and their Linux drivers, discovering 9 real bugs and vulnerabilities while introducing modest runtime overhead. The results demonstrate the major potential of HW/SW co-monitoring in improving system reliability and security.

A Study of Background Conditions for Sphinx--The Satellite-Borne Gamma-Ray Burst Polarimeter

SPHiNX is a proposed satellite-borne gamma-ray burst polarimeter operating in the energy range 50-500 keV. The mission aims to probe the fundamental mechanism responsible for gamma-ray burst prompt emission through polarisation measurements. Optimising the signal-to-background ratio for SPHiNX is an important task during the design phase. The Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit is used in this work. From the simulation, the total background outside the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is about 323 counts/s, which is dominated by the cosmic X-ray background and albedo gamma rays, which contribute ~60% and ~35% of the total background, respectively. The background from albedo neutrons and primary and secondary cosmic rays is negligible. The delayed background induced by the SAA-trapped protons is about 190 counts/s when SPHiNX operates in orbit for one year. The resulting total background level of ~513 counts/s allows the polarisation of ~50 GRBs with minimum detectable polarisation less than 30% to be determined during the two-year mission lifetime.

Toric surfaces over an arbitrary field

We study toric varieties over an arbitrary field with an emphasis on toric surfaces in the Merkurjev-Panin motivic category of "K-motives". We explore the decomposition of certain toric varieties as K-motives into products of central simple algebras, the geometric and topological information encoded in these central simple algebras, and the relationship between the decomposition of the K-motives and the semiorthogonal decomposition of the derived categories. We obtain the information mentioned above for toric surfaces by explicitly classifying all minimal smooth projective toric surfaces using toric geometry.

Deep Stock Representation Learning: From Candlestick Charts to Investment Decisions

We propose a novel investment decision strategy (IDS) based on deep learning. The performance of many IDSs is affected by stock similarity. Most existing stock similarity measurements have the problems: (a) The linear nature of many measurements cannot capture nonlinear stock dynamics; (b) The estimation of many similarity metrics (e.g. covariance) needs very long period historic data (e.g. 3K days) which cannot represent current market effectively; (c) They cannot capture translation-invariance. To solve these problems, we apply Convolutional AutoEncoder to learn a stock representation, based on which we propose a novel portfolio construction strategy by: (i) using the deeply learned representation and modularity optimisation to cluster stocks and identify diverse sectors, (ii) picking stocks within each cluster according to their Sharpe ratio (Sharpe 1994). Overall this strategy provides low-risk high-return portfolios. We use the Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index (FTSE 100) data for evaluation. Results show our portfolio outperforms FTSE 100 index and many well known funds in terms of total return in 2000 trading days.

The Synthesis, Structure and Electronic Properties of a Lead-Free Hybrid Inorganic-Organic Double Perovskite (MA)2KBiCl6 (MA = methylammonium)

In a search for Lead-free materials that could be used as alternatives to the hybrid perovskites,(MA)PbX3, in photovoltaic applications, we have discovered a hybrid double perovskite, (MA)2KBiCl6, which shows striking similarities to the lead analogues. Spectroscopic measurements and nanoindentation studies are combined with density functional calculations to reveal the properties of this interesting system.

OpenRISC System-on-Chip Design Emulation

Recently the hardware emulation technique has emerged as a promising approach to accelerating hardware verification/debugging process. To fully evaluate the powerfulness of the emulation approach and demonstrate its potential impact, we propose to emulate a system-on-chip (SoC) design using Mentor Graphics Veloce emulation platform. This article presents our project setup and the results we have achieved. The results are encouraging. ORPSoC emulation with Veloce has more than ten times faster than hardware simulation. Our experimental results demonstrate that Mentor Graphics Veloce has major advantages in emulation, verification, and debugging of complicated real hardware designs, especially in the context of SoC complexity. Through our three major tasks, we will demonstrate that (1) Veloce can successfully emulate large-scale SoC designs; (2) it has much better performance comparing to the state-of-the-art simulation tools; (3) it can significantly accelerate the process of hardware verification and debugging while maintaining full signal visibility.

Simulation of the In-flight Background for HXMT/HE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) is a broad band X-ray astronomical satellite from 1 to 250 keV. Understanding the X-ray background in detail will help to achieve a good performance of the instrument. In this work, we make use of the mass modelling technique to estimate the background of High Energy Telescope (HE) aboard HXMT. It consists of three steps. First, we built a complete geometric model of HXMT. Then based on the investigation about the space environment concerning HXMT low-earth orbit, in our simulation we considered cosmic rays, cosmic X-ray background (CXB), South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) trapped particles, the albedo gamma and neutrons from interaction of cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere. Finally, the Shielding Physics List supplied by Geant4 collaborations was adopted. According to our simulation, (1) the total background of HXMT/HE is about 540 count/s on average over 20-250 keV energy band after 100 days in orbit; (2) the delayed component caused by cosmic rays and SAA trapped particles dominates the full energy band of HXMT/HE; (3) some emission lines are prominent in the background continuum spectrum and will be used for in-orbit calibration; (4) the estimated sensitivity is approximately 0.1 mCrab at 50 keV with an exposure of $10^{6}$ s.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Properties of a Perovskite-Related Bismuth Phase, (NH4)3Bi2I9

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites, especially methylammonium lead halide, have recently led to a remarkable breakthrough in photovoltaic devices. However, due to the environmental and stability concerns of the heavy metal, lead, in these perovskite based solar cells, research in the non-lead perovskite structures have been attracting increasing attention. In this study, a layered perovskite-like architecture, (NH4)3Bi2I9, was prepared in solution and the structure was solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The results from DFT calculations showed the significant lone pair effect of the bismuth ion and the band gap was measured as around 2.04 eV, which is lower than the band gap of CH3NH3PbBr3. Conductivity measurement was also performed to examine the potential in the applications as an alternative to the lead containing perovskites.

Using ACL2 to Verify Loop Pipelining in Behavioral Synthesis

Behavioral synthesis involves compiling an Electronic System-Level (ESL) design into its Register-Transfer Level (RTL) implementation. Loop pipelining is one of the most critical and complex transformations employed in behavioral synthesis. Certifying the loop pipelining algorithm is challenging because there is a huge semantic gap between the input sequential design and the output pipelined implementation making it infeasible to verify their equivalence with automated sequential equivalence checking techniques. We discuss our ongoing effort using ACL2 to certify loop pipelining transformation. The completion of the proof is work in progress. However, some of the insights developed so far may already be of value to the ACL2 community. In particular, we discuss the key invariant we formalized, which is very different from that used in most pipeline proofs. We discuss the needs for this invariant, its formalization in ACL2, and our envisioned proof using the invariant. We also discuss some trade-offs, challenges, and insights developed in course of the project.

A good mass proxy for galaxy clusters with XMM-Newton

We use a sample of 39 galaxy clusters at redshift z < 0.1 observed by XMM-Newton to investigate the relations between X-ray observables and total mass. Based on central cooling time and central temperature drop, the clusters in this sample are divided into two groups: 25 cool core clusters and 14 non-cool core clusters, respectively. We study the scaling relations of Lbol-M500, M500-T, M500-Mg and M500-YX, and also the influences of cool core on these relations. The results show that the M500-YX relation has a slope close to the standard self-similar value, has the smallest scatter and does not vary with the cluster sample. Moreover, the M500-YX relation is not affected by the cool core. Thus, the parameter of YX may be the best mass indicator.
