On properties of vertical velocity for 2-D steady water waves

In this article, we mainly investigate the properties of vertical velocity v for two dimensional steady water waves over a flat bed. Firstly we prove the existence of the inflection point for each streamline, then we find the behavior of v along each streamline depends strictly on concavity and convexity of streamline, which contributes to complete Constantin conjecture on v in Stokes wave. And the location of maximum vertical fluid velocity is also proven to be at the inflection point. Besides, we also extend our results to the cases with monotonous vorticity.

Machine Learning Approach for Solar Wind Categorization

Solar wind classification is conducive to understand the physical processes ongoing at the Sun and solar wind evolution in the interplanetary space, and furthermore, it is helpful for early warning of space weather events. With rapid developments in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning approaches are increasingly being used for pattern recognition. In this study, an approach from machine learning perspectives is developed to automatically classify the solar wind at 1 AU into four types: coronal-hole-origin, streamer-belt-origin, sector-reversal-region-origin, and ejecta. By exhaustive enumeration, an eight-dimensional scheme ($B_T$, $N_P$, $T_P$, $V_P$, $N_{αp}$, $T_{exp}/T_P$, $S_p$, and $M_f$) is found to perform the best among 8191 combinations of 13 solar wind parameters. 10 popular supervised machine learning models, namely $k$ Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machines with linear and Radial Basic Function kernels, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Adaptive Boosting, Neural Network, Gaussian Naive Bayes, Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, and Extreme Gradient Boosting, are applied to the labeled solar wind data sets. Among them, KNN classifier obtains the highest overall classification accuracy, 92.8%. It significantly improves the accuracy by 9.6% over existing manual schemes. No solar wind composition measurements are needed, permitting our classification scheme to be applied to most solar wind spacecraft data. Besides, two application examples indicate that solar wind classification is helpful for the risk evaluation of predicted magnetic storms and surface charging of geosynchronous spacecrafts.

Monotonic and nonmonotonic immune responses in viral infection systems

In this paper, we study two-dimensional, three-dimensional monotonic and nonmonotonic immune responses in viral infection systems. Our results show that the viral infection systems with monotonic immune response has no bistability appear. However, the systems with nonmonotonic immune response has bistability appear under some conditions. For immune intensity, we got two important thresholds, post-treatment control threshold and elite control threshold. When immune intensity is less than post-treatment control threshold, the virus will be rebound. The virus will be under control when immune intensity is larger than elite control threshold. While between the two thresholds is a bistable interval. When immune intensity is in the bistable interval, the system can have bistability appear. Select the rate of immune cells stimulated by the viruses as a bifurcation parameter for nonmonotonic immune responses, we prove the system exhibits saddle-node bifurcation and transcritical bifurcation.

Brauer-Manin obstruction for Markoff surfaces

Ghosh and Sarnak have studied integral points on surfaces defined by an equation x^2+y^2+z^2-xyz= m over the integers. For these affine surfaces, we systematically study the Brauer group and the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the integral Hasse principle. We prove that strong approximation for integral points on any such surface, away from any finite set of places, fails, and that, for m\neq 0, 4, the Brauer group does not control strong approximation.

A new study on the mild solution for impulsive fractional evolution equations

In this article, we consider mild solutions to a class of impulsive fractional evolution equations of order $0<α<1$. After analyzing analytic results reported in the literature using Mittag-Leffer function, $α$-resolvent operator theory, we propose a more appropriate new definition of mild solutions for impulsive fractional evolution equations by replacing the impulse term operator $S_α(t-t_i)$ with $S_α(t)S_α^{-1}(t_i)$, where $S_α^{-1}(t_i)$ denotes the inverse of the fractional solution operator $S_α(t)$ at $t=t_i, (i=1,2,\cdots m)$.

Suggestion of the DLV dimensionless number system to represent the scaled behavior of structures under impact loads

A group of dimensionless numbers, termed DLV (Density-Length-Velocity) system, is put forward to represent the scaled behavior of structures under impact loads. It is obtained by means of the Buckingham Pi theorem with an alternative basis. The distinct features of this group of dimensionless numbers are that it relates physical quantities of the impacted structure with essential basis of the Density, the Length and the Velocity, and thus it can represent the scaled influence of material property, geometry characteristic and velocity on the behavior of structures. The newly 15 proposed dimensionless numbers reflect three advantages. (1) The intuitively clear physical significance of these dimensionless numbers, such as the ratios of force intensity, force, moment of inertia to the corresponding dynamic quantities, the Johnson's damage number Dn and Zhao's response number Rn etc. are naturally included. (2) The property of direct matching the dimensionless expression of response equations of dynamic problems with these dimensionless numbers through simple equation analysis; (3) The ability of addressing non-scaling problems for different materials and strain-rate-sensitive as well as the VSG (initial impact Velocity-dynamic flow Stress-impact mass G) system. Four classical impact models are used to verify the direct matching property and the non-scaling addressing ability of the DLV system by equation analysis. The results show that the proposed dimensionless number system is simple, clear and efficient, and we suggest using it to represent the scaled behavior of structures under impact loads.

Tumor Saliency Estimation for Breast Ultrasound Images via Breast Anatomy Modeling

Tumor saliency estimation aims to localize tumors by modeling the visual stimuli in medical images. However, it is a challenging task for breast ultrasound due to the complicated anatomic structure of the breast and poor image quality; and existing saliency estimation approaches only model generic visual stimuli, e.g., local and global contrast, location, and feature correlation, and achieve poor performance for tumor saliency estimation. In this paper, we propose a novel optimization model to estimate tumor saliency by utilizing breast anatomy. First, we model breast anatomy and decompose breast ultrasound image into layers using Neutro-Connectedness; then utilize the layers to generate the foreground and background maps; and finally propose a novel objective function to estimate the tumor saliency by integrating the foreground map, background map, adaptive center bias, and region-based correlation cues. The extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach obtains more accurate foreground and background maps with the assistance of the breast anatomy; especially, for the images having large or small tumors; meanwhile, the new objective function can handle the images without tumors. The newly proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance when compared to eight tumor saliency estimation approaches using two breast ultrasound datasets.

On homology with coefficients and generalized inductions

In group representations several inductions given by tensoring with appropriate bimodules may be reconstructed via homology of $G$-posets with $G$-equivariant coefficients. For this purpose, we need various local categories of a finite group $G$, which afford the coefficients. Consequently, the functors among local categories give rise to the homology constructions naturally, and may be used to reformulate some existing results, as well as to deduce new statements.

Quantum Coherent Multielectron Processes in an Atomic Scale Contact

The light emission from a scanning tunneling microscope operated on a Ag(111) surface at 6 K is analyzed from low conductances to values approaching the conductance quantum. Optical spectra recorded at a sample voltages V reveal emission with photon energies hv> 2eV. A model of electrons interacting coherently via a localized plasmon-polariton mode reproduces the experimental data, in particular the kinks in the spectra at eV and 2eV as well as the scaling of the intensity at low and intermediate conductances.

Thresholds and bistability in HIV infection models with oxidative stress

Oxidative stress, a reaction caused by the imbalance between the reactive oxygen species of human organism and its ability to detoxify reactive intermediates and to repair the resulting damage plays an important role in HIV-infections. On one hand, HIV infection is responsible for the chronic oxidative stress of the patients. On the other hand, the oxidative stress contributions to the HIV disease pathogenesis. In this paper, we integrate oxidative stress into an HIV infection model to investigate its effects on the virus dynamics. Through mathematical analysis, we obtain the basic reproduction number R0 of the model which describes the persistence of viruses. In particular, we show that for R0 > 1, the model has a bistable interval with virus rebound threshold and elite control threshold. Numerical simulations and bifurcation analysis are presented to illustrate the viral dynamics under oxidative stress. Our investigation reveals the interplay between viruses and the reaction of human organism including immune response and oxidative stress, and their effects on the health of human being.

Evolution and spatial distribution of Brillouin backscattering associated to hybrid acoustic modes in sub-wavelength silica microfibers

The spectral evolution and spatial distribution of backscattered Brillouin signals is experimentally investigated in sub-wavelength silica microfibers. The Brillouin spectrum evolution reveals the different dynamics of the various peaks, offering evidence of backscattering signals induced by acoustic waves with phase velocity greater than that of the longitudinal wave. The spatial distribution is found to have significant influence on the response of Brillouin scattering under tensile load, with hybrid acoustic modes providing a smaller response under axial strain. This insight into interactions between optical and hybrid acoustic modes at sub-wavelength confinements could help understand ultrasonic waves in tapered waveguides, and have potential applications in optical sensing and detection.

The Evolution of Chemical Abundance in Quasar Broad Line Region

We study the relation between the metallicity of quasar broad line region (BLR) and black hole (BH) mass ($10^{7.5}M_{\odot} \sim 10^{10}M_{\odot}$) and quasar bolometric luminosity ($10^{44.6}erg/s \sim 10^{48} erg/s$) using a sample of $\sim$130,000 quasars at $2.25\leq z\leq 5.25$ from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12 (DR12). We generate composite spectra by stacking individual spectra in the same BH mass (bolometric luminosity) and redshift bins and then estimate the metallicity of quasar BLR using metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios based on the photoionization models. We find a significant correlation between quasar BLR metallicity and BH mass (bolometric luminosity) but no correlation between quasar BLR metallicity and redshift. We also compare the metallicity of quasar BLR and that of host galaxies inferred from the mass-metallicity relation of star-forming galaxy at $z\sim2.3$ and $z\sim3.5$. We find quasar BLR metallicity is 0.3 $\sim$ 1.0 dex higher than their host galaxies. This discrepancy cannot be interpreted by the uncertainty due to different metallicity diagnostic methods, mass-metallicity relation of galaxy, metallicity gradient in quasar host galaxies, BH mass estimation, the effect of different spectral energy distribution (SED) models, and a few other potential sources of uncertainties. We propose a possibility that the high metallicity in quasar BLR might be caused by metal enrichment from massive star formation in the nucleus region of quasars or even the accretion disk.

Broadband optical-fiber-compatible photodetector based on a graphene-MoS2-WS2 heterostructure with a synergetic photo-generating mechanism

Integrating two-dimensional (2D) crystals into optical fibers can grant them optoelectronic properties and extend their range of applications. However, our ability to produce complicated structures is limited by the challenges of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) manufacturing. Here, we successfully demonstrate a 2D-material heterostructure created on a fiber endface by integrating a microscale multilayer graphene-MoS2-WS2 van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure film on it. Hence, based on simple layer-by-layer transferring, a visible-to-infrared gating-free all-in-fiber photodetector (FPD) is produced. Our FPD exhibits an ultrahigh photoresponsivity of 6.6X107 A/W and a relatively fast response speed of 7 ms at 400 nm light wavelength, due to the strong light absorption and the built-in electric field of the heterostructure. Moreover, owning to the type-II staggered band alignments in the MoS2-WS2 heterostructure, the interlayer optical transition between the MoS2 and WS2 layers enable our FPD to sense the infrared light power, displaying a photoresponsivity of 17.1 A/W at 1550 nm. In addition, an inverse photoresponse is observed under an illuminating power higher than 1 mW at 1550 nm, indicating a competingphotocurrent generation mechanism, comprising the photoconductive and photo-bolometric effects. These findings offer a new strategy for developing broadband and gating-free photodetectors and other novel optoelectronic devices based on 2D crystals. Furthermore, our fabrication method may provide a new platform for the integration of optical fibers with semiconducting materials.

A Hybrid Framework for Tumor Saliency Estimation

Automatic tumor segmentation of breast ultrasound (BUS) image is quite challenging due to the complicated anatomic structure of breast and poor image quality. Most tumor segmentation approaches achieve good performance on BUS images collected in controlled settings; however, the performance degrades greatly with BUS images from different sources. Tumor saliency estimation (TSE) has attracted increasing attention to solving the problem by modeling radiologists' attention mechanism. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid framework for TSE, which integrates both high-level domain-knowledge and robust low-level saliency assumptions and can overcome drawbacks caused by direct mapping in traditional TSE approaches. The new framework integrated the Neutro-Connectedness (NC) map, the adaptive-center, the correlation and the layer structure-based weighted map. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art TSE methods.

Arithmetic purity of strong approximation for homogeneous spaces

We prove that any open subset $U$ of a semi-simple simply connected quasi-split linear algebraic group $G$ with ${codim} (G\setminus U, G)\geq 2$ over a number field satisfies strong approximation by establishing a fibration of $G$ over a toric variety. We also prove a similar result of strong approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction for a partial equivariant smooth compactification of a homogeneous space where all invertible functions are constant and the semi-simple part of the linear algebraic group is quasi-split. Some semi-abelian varieties of any given dimension where the complements of a rational point do not satisfy strong approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction are given.

Comparing descent obstruction and Brauer-Manin obstruction for open varieties

We provide a relation between Brauer-Manin obstruction and descent obstruction for torsors over open varieties under a connected linear algebraic group or a group of multiplicative type is given. Such a relation is further refined for torsors under a torus. As an appliaction, we prove that the semi-simple part of a connected linear algebraic group will satisfy strong approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction if G iteself satisfies strong approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction. The equivalence between descent obstruction and etale Brauer-Manin obstruction for smooth projective varieties is extended to smooth quasi-projective varieties, which provides the perspective to study integral points.

Global stability in a mathematical model of de-radicalization

Radicalization is the process by which people come to adopt increasingly extreme political, social or religious ideologies. When radicalization leads to violence, radical thinking becomes a threat to national security. De-radicalization programs are part of an effort to combat violent extremism and terrorism. This type of initiatives attempt to alter violent extremists radical beliefs and violent behavior with the aim to reintegrate them into society. In this paper we introduce a simple compartmental model suitable to describe de-radicalization programs. The population is divided into four compartments: $ (S) $ susceptible, $ (E) $ extremists, $ (R) $ recruiters, and $ (T) $ treatment. We calculate the basic reproduction number $ \mathcal{R}_0 $. For $ \mathcal{R}_0< 1 $ the system has one globally asymptotically stable equilibrium where no extremist or recruiters are present. For $ \mathcal{R}_0 >1 $ the system has an additional equilibrium where extremists and recruiters are endemic to the population. A Lyapunov function is used to show that, for $ \mathcal{R}_0 >1 $, the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. We use numerical simulations to support our analytical results. Based on our model we asses strategies to counter violent extremism.

Automatic Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation: A Survey

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women worldwide. In clinical routine, automatic breast ultrasound (BUS) image segmentation is very challenging and essential for cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Many BUS segmentation approaches have been studied in the last two decades, and have been proved to be effective on private datasets. Currently, the advancement of BUS image segmentation seems to meet its bottleneck. The improvement of the performance is increasingly challenging, and only few new approaches were published in the last several years. It is the time to look at the field by reviewing previous approaches comprehensively and to investigate the future directions. In this paper, we study the basic ideas, theories, pros and cons of the approaches, group them into categories, and extensively review each category in depth by discussing the principles, application issues, and advantages/disadvantages.
