Cancelling microwave crosstalk with fixed-frequency qubits

Scalable quantum information processing requires that modular gate operations can be executed in parallel. The presence of crosstalk decreases the individual addressability, causing erroneous results during simultaneous operations. For superconducting qubits which operate in the microwave regime, electromagnetic isolation is often limited due to design constraints, leading to signal crosstalk that can deteriorate the quality of simultaneous gate operations. Here, we propose and demonstrate a method based on AC Stark effect for calibrating the microwave signal crosstalk. The method is suitable for processors based on fixed-frequency qubits which are known for high coherence and simple control. The optimal compensation parameters can be reliably identified from a well-defined interference pattern. We implement the method on an array of 7 superconducting qubits, and show its effectiveness in removing the majority of crosstalk errors.

The PEPSI Exoplanet Transit Survey (PETS) I: Investigating the presence of a silicate atmosphere on the super-Earth 55 Cnc e

The study of exoplanets and especially their atmospheres can reveal key insights on their evolution by identifying specific atmospheric species. For such atmospheric investigations, high-resolution transmission spectroscopy has shown great success, especially for Jupiter-type planets. Towards the atmospheric characterization of smaller planets, the super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cnc e is one of the most promising terrestrial exoplanets studied to date. Here, we present a high-resolution spectroscopic transit observation of this planet, acquired with the PEPSI instrument at the Large Binocular Telescope. Assuming the presence of Earth-like crust species on the surface of 55 Cnc e, from which a possible silicate-vapor atmosphere could have originated, we search in its transmission spectrum for absorption of various atomic and ionized species such as Fe , Fe+, Ca , Ca+, Mg and K , among others. Not finding absorption for any of the investigated species, we are able to set absorption limits with a median value of 1.9 x RP. In conclusion, we do not find evidence of a widely extended silicate envelope on this super-Earth reaching several planetary radii.

Scalable algorithm simplification using quantum AND logic

Implementing quantum algorithms on realistic hardware requires translating high-level global operations into sequences of native elementary gates, a process known as quantum compiling. Physical limitations, such as constraints in connectivity and gate alphabets, often result in unacceptable implementation costs. To enable successful near-term applications, it is crucial to optimize compilation by exploiting the potential capabilities of existing hardware. Here, we implement a resource-efficient construction for a quantum version of AND logic that can reduce the cost, enabling the execution of key quantum circuits. On a high-scalability superconducting quantum processor, we demonstrate low-depth synthesis of high-fidelity generalized Toffoli gates with up to 8 qubits and Grover's search algorithm in a search space of up to 64 entries; both are the largest such implementations in scale to date. Our experimental demonstration illustrates a scalable implementation of simplifying quantum algorithms, paving the way for larger, more meaningful quantum applications on noisy devices.

Superrobust Geometric Control of a Superconducting Circuit

Geometric phases accompanying adiabatic quantum evolutions can be used to construct robust quantum control for quantum information processing due to their noise-resilient feature. A significant development along this line is to construct geometric gates using nonadiabatic quantum evolutions to reduce errors due to decoherence. However, it has been shown that nonadiabatic geometric gates are not necessarily more robust than dynamical ones, in contrast to an intuitive expectation. Here we experimentally investigate this issue for the case of nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation~(NHQC) and show that conventional NHQC schemes cannot guarantee the expected robustness due to a cross coupling to the states outside the computational space. We implement a different set of constraints for gate construction in order to suppress such cross coupling to achieve an enhanced robustness. Using a superconducting quantum circuit, we demonstrate high-fidelity holonomic gates whose infidelity against quasi-static transverse errors can be suppressed up to the fourth order, instead of the second order in conventional NHQC and dynamical gates. In addition, we explicitly measure the accumulated dynamical phase due to the above mentioned cross coupling and verify that it is indeed much reduced in our NHQC scheme. We further demonstrate a protocol for constructing two-qubit NHQC gates also with an enhanced robustness.

The quantum UV-IR map for line defects in $\mathfrak{gl}(3)$-type class $S$ theories

We consider the quantum UV-IR map for line defects in class $S$ theories of $\mathfrak{gl}(3)$-type. This map computes the protected spin character which counts framed BPS states with spin for the bulk-defect system. We give a geometric method of computing this map motivated by the physics of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and compute it explicitly in various examples. As a spin-off we propose a new way of computing a certain specialization of the HOMFLY polynomial for links in $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a sum over BPS webs attached to the link.

Exact WKB and the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve for 4d $N=2$ pure $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills, Part I: Abelianization

We investigate the exact WKB method for the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve of 4d $N=2$ pure $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills, in the language of abelianization. The relevant differential equation is a third-order equation on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with two irregular singularities. We employ the exact WKB method to study solutions to such a third-order equation and the associated Stokes phenomena. We also investigate the exact quantization condition for a certain spectral problem. Moreover, exact WKB analysis leads us to consider new Darboux coordinates on a moduli space of flat SL(3,$\mathbb{C}$)-connections. In particular, in the weak coupling region we encounter coordinates of higher length-twist type generalizing Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. The Darboux coordinates are conjectured to admit asymptotic expansions given by the formal quantum periods series; we perform numerical analysis supporting this conjecture.

A Quantum Engineer's Guide to Superconducting Qubits

The aim of this review is to provide quantum engineers with an introductory guide to the central concepts and challenges in the rapidly accelerating field of superconducting quantum circuits. Over the past twenty years, the field has matured from a predominantly basic research endeavor to one that increasingly explores the engineering of larger-scale superconducting quantum systems. Here, we review several foundational elements -- qubit design, noise properties, qubit control, and readout techniques -- developed during this period, bridging fundamental concepts in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) and contemporary, state-of-the-art applications in gate-model quantum computation.

Coupler-Assisted Controlled-Phase Gate with Enhanced Adiabaticity

High-fidelity two-qubit entangling gates are essential building blocks for fault-tolerant quantum computers. Over the past decade, tremendous efforts have been made to develop scalable high-fidelity two-qubit gates with superconducting quantum circuits. Recently, an easy-to-scale controlled-phase gate scheme that utilizes the tunable-coupling architecture with fixed-frequency qubits [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 240502; Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 240503] has been demonstrated with high fidelity and attracted broad interest. However, in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanism is still missing, preventing us from fully exploiting its potential. Here we present a comprehensive theoretical study, explaining the origin of the high-contrast ZZ interaction. Based on improved understanding, we develop a general yet convenient method for shaping an adiabatic pulse in a multilevel system, and identify how to optimize the gate performance from design. Given state-of-the-art coherence properties, we expect the scheme to potentially achieve a two-qubit gate error rate near $10^{-5}$, which would drastically speed up the progress towards fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Evidence for TiO in the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-65 b

We present the low-resolution transmission spectra of the puffy hot Jupiter HAT-P-65b (0.53 M$_\mathrm{Jup}$, 1.89 R$_\mathrm{Jup}$, $T_\mathrm{eq}=1930$ K), based on two transits observed using the OSIRIS spectrograph on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC). The transmission spectra of the two nights are consistent, covering the wavelength range 517--938 nm and consisting of mostly 5 nm spectral bins. We perform equilibrium-chemistry spectral retrieval analyses on the jointly fitted transmission spectrum and obtain an equilibrium temperature of $1645^{+255}_{-244}$ K and a cloud coverage of $36^{+23}_{-17}$%, revealing a relatively clear planetary atmosphere. Based on free-chemistry retrieval, we report strong evidence for TiO. Additional individual analyses in each night reveal weak-to-moderate evidence for TiO in both nights, but moderate evidence for Na or VO only in one of the nights. Future high-resolution Doppler spectroscopy as well as emission observations will help confirm the presence of TiO and constrain its role in shaping the vertical thermal structure of HAT-P-65b's atmosphere.

Suppressing Coherent Two-Qubit Errors via Dynamical Decoupling

Scalable quantum information processing requires the ability to tune multi-qubit interactions. This makes the precise manipulation of quantum states particularly difficult for multi-qubit interactions because tunability unavoidably introduces sensitivity to fluctuations in the tuned parameters, leading to erroneous multi-qubit gate operations. The performance of quantum algorithms may be severely compromised by coherent multi-qubit errors. It is therefore imperative to understand how these fluctuations affect multi-qubit interactions and, more importantly, to mitigate their influence. In this study, we demonstrate how to implement dynamical-decoupling techniques to suppress the two-qubit analogue of the dephasing on a superconducting quantum device featuring a compact tunable coupler, a trending technology that enables the fast manipulation of qubit--qubit interactions. The pure-dephasing time shows an up to ~14 times enhancement on average when using robust sequences. The results are in good agreement with the noise generated from room-temperature circuits. Our study further reveals the decohering processes associated with tunable couplers and establishes a framework to develop gates and sequences robust against two-qubit errors.

High-current CNT films grown directly on commercially available 2.5D substrates for low-voltage field-emission electron sources

Carbon nanotube (CNT) based electronic devices are promising for beyond-silicon solid-state electronics and vacuum micro-nano-electronics. Despite rapid progress in CNT field-effect transistor related solid-state electronics, the development of CNT-based vacuum nanoelectronic devices is substantially blocked by the longstanding challenges in demanding high-current field-emission (FE) electron sources at low operating voltage. In addition to CNTs' properties, FE characteristics are also affected by substrate morphology and interface state. This work demonstrates high-current FE characteristics at relatively low operating voltage by using CNT films grown directly on commercially available 2.5D substrates with matched feature size and improved interface contact. Simulation results indicate that the commercially available 2.5D substrate including nickel foam (NiF) and carbon cloth (CC) with appropriate feature size would dramatically help to enhance emission current at a relatively lower voltage. Modified fabrication process results in improved contact between CNTs and the underlying 2.5D substrates. Twenty times higher emission current density with halved lower turn-on electric field achieved by CNTs grown directly on randomly picked NiF shows the potential of 2.5D substrate with good contact in improving FE characteristics. Finally, a high emission current (6 mA) with approximately 75 percent decrease in turn-on electric field was realized by matching the feature size of 2.5D substrate with that of CNTs, bringing us significantly closer to reliable high-current and low-voltage FE electron sources for practical applications.

Lane Detection Model Based on Spatio-Temporal Network With Double Convolutional Gated Recurrent Units

Lane detection is one of the indispensable and key elements of self-driving environmental perception. Many lane detection models have been proposed, solving lane detection under challenging conditions, including intersection merging and splitting, curves, boundaries, occlusions and combinations of scene types. Nevertheless, lane detection will remain an open problem for some time to come. The ability to cope well with those challenging scenes impacts greatly the applications of lane detection on advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs). In this paper, a spatio-temporal network with double Convolutional Gated Recurrent Units (ConvGRUs) is proposed to address lane detection in challenging scenes. Both of ConvGRUs have the same structures, but different locations and functions in our network. One is used to extract the information of the most likely low-level features of lane markings. The extracted features are input into the next layer of the end-to-end network after concatenating them with the outputs of some blocks. The other one takes some continuous frames as its input to process the spatio-temporal driving information. Extensive experiments on the large-scale TuSimple lane marking challenge dataset and Unsupervised LLAMAS dataset demonstrate that the proposed model can effectively detect lanes in the challenging driving scenes. Our model can outperform the state-of-the-art lane detection models.

Multi-level Quantum Noise Spectroscopy

System noise identification is crucial to the engineering of robust quantum systems. Although existing quantum noise spectroscopy (QNS) protocols measure an aggregate amount of noise affecting a quantum system, they generally cannot distinguish between the underlying processes that contribute to it. Here, we propose and experimentally validate a spin-locking-based QNS protocol that exploits the multi-level energy structure of a superconducting qubit to achieve two notable advances. First, our protocol extends the spectral range of weakly anharmonic qubit spectrometers beyond the present limitations set by their lack of strong anharmonicity. Second, the additional information gained from probing the higher-excited levels enables us to identify and distinguish contributions from different underlying noise mechanisms.

By employing techniques developed for superconducting quantum computing, we experimentally investigate phase-sensitive Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interference phenomena in a circuit QED. Our experiments cover a large range of LZS transition parameters, and demonstrate the LZS induced Rabi-like oscillation as well as phase-dependent steady-state population.

Indications for very high metallicity and absence of methane for the eccentric exo-Saturn WASP-117b

We investigate the atmospheric composition of the long period ($P_{\rm orb}=$ 10 days), eccentric exo-Saturn WASP-117b. WASP-117b could be in atmospheric temperature and chemistry similar to WASP-107b. In mass and radius WASP-117b is similar to WASP-39b, which allows a comparative study of these planets. We analyze a near-infrared transmission spectrum of WASP-117b taken with Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 G141, which was reduced with two independent pipelines. High resolution measurements were taken with VLT/ESPRESSO in the optical. We report the robust ($3σ$) detection of a water spectral feature. Using a 1D atmosphere model with isothermal temperature, uniform cloud deck and equilibrium chemistry, the Bayesian evidence of a retrieval analysis of the transmission spectrum indicates a preference for a high atmospheric metallicity ${\rm [Fe/H]}=2.58^{+0.26}_{-0.37}$ and clear skies. The data are also consistent with a lower-metallicity composition ${\rm [Fe/H]}<1.75$ and a cloud deck between $10^{-2.2} - 10^{-5.1}$ bar, but with weaker Bayesian preference. We retrieve a low CH$_4$ abundance of $<10^{-4}$ volume fraction within $1 σ$ and $<2\cdot 10^{-1}$ volume fraction within $3 σ$. We cannot constrain the equilibrium temperature between theoretically imposed limits of 700 and 1000~K. Further observations are needed to confirm quenching of CH$_4$ with $K_{zz}\geq 10^8$~cm$^2$/s. We report indications of Na and K in the VLT/ESPRESSO high resolution spectrum with substantial Bayesian evidence in combination with HST data.

High-fidelity, high-scalability two-qubit gate scheme for superconducting qubits

High-quality two-qubit gate operations are crucial for scalable quantum information processing. Often, the gate fidelity is compromised when the system becomes more integrated. Therefore, a low-error-rate, easy-to-scale two-qubit gate scheme is highly desirable. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a new two-qubit gate scheme that exploits fixed-frequency qubits and a tunable coupler in a superconducting quantum circuit. The scheme requires less control lines, reduces crosstalk effect, simplifies calibration procedures, yet produces a controlled-Z gate in 30ns with a high fidelity of 99.5%, derived from the interleaved randomized benchmarking method. Error analysis shows that gate errors are mostly coherence limited. Our demonstration paves the way for large-scale implementation of high-fidelity quantum operations.

Lane detection in complex scenes based on end-to-end neural network

The lane detection is a key problem to solve the division of derivable areas in unmanned driving, and the detection accuracy of lane lines plays an important role in the decision-making of vehicle driving. Scenes faced by vehicles in daily driving are relatively complex. Bright light, insufficient light, and crowded vehicles will bring varying degrees of difficulty to lane detection. So we combine the advantages of spatial convolution in spatial information processing and the efficiency of ERFNet in semantic segmentation, propose an end-to-end network to lane detection in a variety of complex scenes. And we design the information exchange block by combining spatial convolution and dilated convolution, which plays a great role in understanding detailed information. Finally, our network was tested on the CULane database and its F1-measure with IOU threshold of 0.5 can reach 71.9%.

Implementing Bilinear Interpolation on Quantum Images

In this paper, we present an interpolation scheme for FRQI images based on bilinear interpolation. To accomplish this, we formulated several quantum modules, i.e., assignment module, increment module, and quarter module, and suffused them into our proposed quantum image interpolation circuit. The concrete quantum circuits to accomplish up-scaling and down-scaling based on bilinear for FRQI images are designed and the network complexities of them are analyzed. Finally, to validate the proposed method, simulation experiments to enlarge and reduce the test images are executed, whose results are compared with the nearest neighbor interpolation for FRQI images. The up-scaled images by using proposed interpolation algorithm achieve satisfactory results, and both PSNR and SSIM values are better than those of the nearest neighbor method.
