Raman evidence for dimerization and Mott collapse in $α$-RuCl$_3$ under pressures

We perform Raman spectroscopy studies on $α$-RuCl$_3$ at room temperature to explore its phase transitions of magnetism and chemical bonding under pressures. The Raman measurements resolve two critical pressures, about $p_1=1.1$~GPa and $p_2=1.7$~GPa, involving very different intertwining behaviors between the structural and magnetic excitations. With increasing pressures, a stacking order phase transition of $α$-RuCl$_3$ layers develops at $p_1=1.1$~GPa, indicated by the new Raman phonon modes and the modest Raman magnetic susceptibility adjustment. The abnormal softening and splitting of the Ru in-plane Raman mode provide direct evidence of the in-plane dimerization of the Ru-Ru bonds at $p_2=1.7$~GPa. The Raman susceptibility is greatly enhanced with pressure increasing and sharply suppressed after the dimerization. We propose that the system undergoes Mott collapse at $p_2=1.7$~GPa and turns into a dimerized correlated band insulator. Our studies demonstrate competitions between Kitaev physics, magnetism, and chemical bondings in Kitaev compounds.

Fractional excitations in one-dimensional fermionic superfluids

We study the soliton modes carrying fractional quantum numbers in one-dimensional superfluids. In the $s$-wave pairing superfluid with the phase of the order parameter twisted by opposite angles $\pm φ/2$ at the two ends there is an emergent complex $Z_2$ soliton mode carrying fractional spin number $φ/(2π)$ if there is only one pairing branch. We demonstrate that in finite systems of length $L$, the spin density for one pairing branch in the presence of a single soliton mode consists of two terms, a localized spin density profile carrying fractional quantum number $φ/(2π)$, and a uniform background $-φ/(2πL)$. The latter one vanishes in the thermodynamic limit leaving a single soliton mode carrying fractional excitation, however it is essential to keep the total quantum number conserved in finite systems. This analysis is also applicable to other systems with fractional quantum numbers, thus provides a mechanism to understand the compatibility of the emergence of fractional charges with the integral quantization of charges in a finite system. For the $p$-wave pairing superfluid with the chemical potential interpolating between the strong and weak pairing phases, the $Z_2$ soliton is associated with a Majorana zero mode. By introducing the dimension density, we argue that the Majorana zero mode may be understood as an object with 1/2 dimension of the single particle Hilbert space. We conjecture a connection of the dimension density of one-dimensional solitons with the quantum dimension of topological excitations.

Fractional exclusion and braid statistics in one dimension: a study via dimensional reduction of Chern-Simons theory

The relation between braid and exclusion statistics is examined in one-dimensional systems, within the framework of Chern-Simons statistical transmutation in gauge invariant form with an appropriate dimensional reduction. If the matter action is anomalous, as for chiral fermions, a relation between braid and exclusion statistics can be established explicitly for both mutual and nonmutual cases. However, if it is not anomalous, the exclusion statistics of emergent low energy excitations is not necessarily connected to the braid statistics of the physical charged fields of the system. Finally, we also discuss the bosonization of one-dimensional anyonic systems through T-duality.

Mechanical Manipulations on Electronic Transport of Graphene Nanoribbons

We study the effects of uniaxial strains on the transport properties of the graphene nanoribbons(GNRs) connected with two metallic leads in heterojunctions, using the transfer matrix method. Two typical GNRs with zigzag and armchair boundaries are considered, and the tension is applied either parallel or perpendicular to the ribbon axis. It turns out that the electron-hole symmetry is missing in the gate voltage dependence of the conductance data of the armchair GNRs, while it persists in the zigzag ribbons under any strains. For an armchair GNR with a vertical tension applied, a sharp drop of conductance is found near the critical value of the strain inducing a quantum phase transition, which allows to determine the critical strain accurately via measuring the conductance. In the zigzag ribbon, there exists a range of gate voltage around zero, where the conductance is insensitive to the small horizontal strains. The band structures and low-energy properties are calculated to elucidate the mechanism on the strain effects in GNRs. We expect that our results can be useful in developing graphene-based strain sensors.

Electronic transport through graphene nanoribbons with Stone-Wales reconstruction at edges and interfaces

In this paper, we study the conductance of the graphene nanoribbons(GNRs) in the presence of the Stone-Wales(S-W) reconstruction, using the transfer matrix method. The ribbon is connected with semi-infinite quantum wires as the leads. The S-W reconstruction occurs on the edges and the interfaces between the electrodes and ribbon. When the reconstruction occurs on the edges, the conductance is suppressed considerably if the gate voltage $V_g$ takes intermediate values around $|V_{g}|\sim t_0$($t_0$ being the hopping amplitude of grahene) in both positive and negative energy regions. In contrast, if $V_g$ is close to the Dirac point or the band edges, the conductance is relatively insensitive to the edge reconstruction. The effect of edge reconstruction become less important with increasing ribbon width as expected. The S-W reconstruction occurs also possibly at the interfaces. In this case, the reconstruction suppresses identically the conductance in the entire range of $V_g$ for armchair GNRs. For the zigzag GNRs, the conductance is strongly suppressed in the negative energy region however the change of the conductance is relatively small in the positive energy region. We also analyze the transmission coefficients as functions of the channel index(the transverse momentum $k_y$ of the leads) for the neutral armchair GNRs with interface defects. Interestingly, there are two transmission peaks appearing at $k_{y}=π/3$ and $k_{y}=2π/3$ due to the unit cell doubling.

On the Real-time Prediction Problems of Bursting Hashtags in Twitter

Hundreds of thousands of hashtags are generated every day on Twitter. Only a few become bursting topics. Among the few, only some can be predicted in real-time. In this paper, we take the initiative to conduct a systematic study of a series of challenging real-time prediction problems of bursting hashtags. Which hashtags will become bursting? If they do, when will the burst happen? How long will they remain active? And how soon will they fade away? Based on empirical analysis of real data from Twitter, we provide insightful statistics to answer these questions, which span over the entire lifecycles of hashtags.

Moduli Spaces of Arrangements of 10 Projective Lines with Quadruple Points

We classify moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points. We show that moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points may consist of more than 2 disconnected components, namely 3 or 4 distinct points. We also present defining equations to those arrangements whose moduli spaces are still reducible after taking quotients of complex conjugations.

Combinatorial symmetry of line arrangements and applications

We introduce an algorithm that exploits a combinatorial symmetry of an arrangement in order to produce a geometric reflection between two disconnected components of its moduli space. We apply this method to disqualify three real examples found in previous work by the authors from being Zariski pairs. Robustness is shown by its application to complex cases, as well.

Moduli spaces of ten-line arrangements with double and triple points

Two arrangements with the same combinatorial intersection lattice but whose complements have different fundamental groups are called a Zariski pair. This work finds that there are at most nine such pairs amongst all ten line arrangements whose intersection points are doubles or triples. This result is obtained by considering the moduli space of a given configuration table which describes the intersection lattice. A complete combinatorial classification is given of all arrangements of this type under a suitable assumption, producing a list of seventy-one described in a table, most of which do not explicitly appear in the literature. This list also includes other important counterexamples: nine combinatorial arrangements that are not geometrically realizable.

Plasmon modes in the magnetically doped Single Layer and Multilayers of Helical Metals

We study the plasmon excitations and the electromagnetic response of the magnetically doped single layer and multilayer of ``helical metals'', which emerge at the surfaces of topological insulators. For the single layer case, we find a ``spin-plasmon'' mode with the rotating spin texture due to the combination of the spin-momentum locking of ``helical metals'' and the Hall response from magnetization. For the multilayers case, we investigate the electromagnetic response due to the plasmon excitations, including the Faraday rotation for the light propagating normal to the helical metal layers and an additional optical mode with the frequency within the conventional plasmon gap for the light propagating along the helical metal layers.

Octagraphene as a Versatile Carbon Atomic Sheet for Novel Nanotubes, Unconventional Fullerenes and Hydrogen Storage

We study a versatile structurally favorable periodic $sp^2$-bonded carbon atomic planar sheet with $C_{4v}$ symmetry by means of the first-principles calculations. This carbon allotrope is composed of carbon octagons and squares with two bond lengths and is thus dubbed as octagraphene. It is a semimetal with the Fermi surface consisting of one hole and one electron pocket, whose low-energy physics can be well described by a tight-binding model of $π$-electrons. Its Young's modulus, breaking strength and Poisson's ratio are obtained to be 306 $N/m$, 34.4 $N/m$ and 0.13, respectively, which are close to those of graphene. The novel sawtooth and armchair carbon nanotubes as well as unconventional fullerenes can also be constructed from octagraphene. It is found that the Ti-absorbed octagraphene can be allowed for hydrogen storage with capacity around 7.76 wt%.

Super-Mixed Multiple Attribute Group Decision Making Method Based on Hybrid Fuzzy Grey Relation Approach Degree

The feature of our method different from other fuzzy grey relation method for supermixed multiple attribute group decision-making is that all of the subjective and objective weights are obtained by interval grey number and that the group decisionmaking is performed based on the relative approach degree of grey TOPSIS, the relative approach degree of grey incidence and the relative membership degree of grey incidence using 4-dimensional Euclidean distance. The weighted Borda method is used to obtain final rank by using the results of four methods. An example shows the applicability of the proposed approach.

A Simple Route towards High-Concentration Surfactant-Free Graphene Dispersions

A simple solvent exchange method is introduced to prepare high-concentration and surfactant-free graphene liquid dispersion. Natural graphite flakes are first exfoliated into graphene in dimethylformamide (DMF). DMF is then exchanged by terpineol through distillation, relying on their large difference in boiling points. Graphene can then be concentrated thanks to the volume difference between DMF and terpineol. The concentrated graphene dispersions are used to fabricate transparent conductive thin films, which possess comparable properties to those prepared by more complex methods.

Mean Curvature Flow of Higher Codimension in Hyperbolic Spaces

In this paper we investigate the convergence for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds with arbitrary codimension in space forms. Particularly, we prove that the mean curvature flow deforms a closed submanifold satisfying a pinching condition in a hyperbolic space form to a round point in finite time.

T-Carbon: A Novel Carbon Allotrope

A structurally stable crystalline carbon allotrope is predicted by means of the first-principles calculations. This allotrope can be derived by substituting each atom in diamond with a carbon tetrahedron, and possesses the same space group Fd^1 3m as diamond, which is thus coined as T- carbon. The calculations on geometrical, vibrational and electronic properties reveal that T-carbon, with a considerable structural stability and a much lower density 1.50 g/cm3, is a semiconductor with a direct band gap about 3.0 eV, and has a Vickers hardness 61.1 GPa lower than diamond but comparable with cubic boron nitride. Such a form of carbon, once obtained, would have wide applications in photocatalysis, adsoption, hydrogen storage and aerospace materials.
