Learning and Generalizing Variable Impedance Manipulation Skills from Human Demonstrations

By learning Variable Impedance Control policy, robot assistants can intelligently adapt their manipulation compliance to ensure both safe interaction and proper task completion when operating in human-robot interaction environments. In this paper, we propose a DMP-based framework that learns and generalizes variable impedance manipulation skills from human demonstrations. This framework improves robots$'$ adaptability to environment changes(i.e. the weight and shape changes of grasping object at the robot end-effector) and inherits the efficiency of demonstration-variance-based stiffness estimation methods. Besides, with our stiffness estimation method, we generate not only translational stiffness profiles but also rotational stiffness profiles that are ignored or incomplete in most learning Variable Impedance Control papers. Real-world experiments on a 7 DoF redundant robot manipulator have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of our framework.

Analysing Wideband Absorbance Immittance in Normal and Ears with Otitis Media with Effusion Using Machine Learning

Wideband Absorbance Immittance (WAI) has been available for more than a decade, however its clinical use still faces the challenges of limited understanding and poor interpretation of WAI results. This study aimed to develop Machine Learning (ML) tools to identify the WAI absorbance characteristics across different frequency-pressure regions in the normal middle ear and ears with otitis media with effusion (OME) to enable diagnosis of middle ear conditions automatically. Data analysis including pre-processing of the WAI data, statistical analysis and classification model development, together with key regions extraction from the 2D frequency-pressure WAI images are conducted in this study. Our experimental results show that ML tools appear to hold great potential for the automated diagnosis of middle ear diseases from WAI data. The identified key regions in the WAI provide guidance to practitioners to better understand and interpret WAI data and offer the prospect of quick and accurate diagnostic decisions.

Unit selection synthesis based data augmentation for fixed phrase speaker verification

Data augmentation is commonly used to help build a robust speaker verification system, especially in limited-resource case. However, conventional data augmentation methods usually focus on the diversity of acoustic environment, leaving the lexicon variation neglected. For text dependent speaker verification tasks, it's well-known that preparing training data with the target transcript is the most effectual approach to build a well-performing system, however collecting such data is time-consuming and expensive. In this work, we propose a unit selection synthesis based data augmentation method to leverage the abundant text-independent data resources. In this approach text-independent speeches of each speaker are firstly broke up to speech segments each contains one phone unit. Then segments that contain phonetics in the target transcript are selected to produce a speech with the target transcript by concatenating them in turn. Experiments are carried out on the AISHELL Speaker Verification Challenge 2019 database, the results and analysis shows that our proposed method can boost the system performance significantly.

Measuring and characterizing the line profile of HARPS with a laser frequency comb

Aims. We study the 2D spectral line profile of HARPS (High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher), measuring its variation with position across the detector and with changing line intensity. The characterization of the line profile and its variations are important for achieving the precision of the wavelength scales of 10^{-10} or 3.0 cm/s necessary to detect Earth-twins in the habitable zone around solar-like stars. Methods. We used a laser frequency comb (LFC) with unresolved and unblended lines to probe the instrument line profile. We injected the LFC light (attenuated by various neutral density filters) into both the object and the reference fibres of HARPS, and we studied the variations of the line profiles with the line intensities. We applied moment analysis to measure the line positions, widths, and skewness as well as to characterize the line profile distortions induced by the spectrograph and detectors. Based on this, we established a model to correct for point spread function distortions by tracking the beam profiles in both fibres. Results. We demonstrate that the line profile varies with the position on the detector and as a function of line intensities. This is consistent with a charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) effect on the HARPS detector. The estimate of the line position depends critically on the line profile, and therefore a change in the line amplitude effectively changes the measured position of the lines, affecting the stability of the wavelength scale of the instrument. We deduce and apply the correcting functions to re-calibrate and mitigate this effect, reducing it to a level consistent with photon noise.

Grid Tagging Scheme for Aspect-oriented Fine-grained Opinion Extraction

Aspect-oriented Fine-grained Opinion Extraction (AFOE) aims at extracting aspect terms and opinion terms from review in the form of opinion pairs or additionally extracting sentiment polarity of aspect term to form opinion triplet. Because of containing several opinion factors, the complete AFOE task is usually divided into multiple subtasks and achieved in the pipeline. However, pipeline approaches easily suffer from error propagation and inconvenience in real-world scenarios. To this end, we propose a novel tagging scheme, Grid Tagging Scheme (GTS), to address the AFOE task in an end-to-end fashion only with one unified grid tagging task. Additionally, we design an effective inference strategy on GTS to exploit mutual indication between different opinion factors for more accurate extractions. To validate the feasibility and compatibility of GTS, we implement three different GTS models respectively based on CNN, BiLSTM, and BERT, and conduct experiments on the aspect-oriented opinion pair extraction and opinion triplet extraction datasets. Extensive experimental results indicate that GTS models outperform strong baselines significantly and achieve state-of-the-art performance.

Attention Transfer Network for Aspect-level Sentiment Classification

Aspect-level sentiment classification (ASC) aims to detect the sentiment polarity of a given opinion target in a sentence. In neural network-based methods for ASC, most works employ the attention mechanism to capture the corresponding sentiment words of the opinion target, then aggregate them as evidence to infer the sentiment of the target. However, aspect-level datasets are all relatively small-scale due to the complexity of annotation. Data scarcity causes the attention mechanism sometimes to fail to focus on the corresponding sentiment words of the target, which finally weakens the performance of neural models. To address the issue, we propose a novel Attention Transfer Network (ATN) in this paper, which can successfully exploit attention knowledge from resource-rich document-level sentiment classification datasets to improve the attention capability of the aspect-level sentiment classification task. In the ATN model, we design two different methods to transfer attention knowledge and conduct experiments on two ASC benchmark datasets. Extensive experimental results show that our methods consistently outperform state-of-the-art works. Further analysis also validates the effectiveness of ATN.

The backbone-residual model. Accurately characterising the instrumental profile of a fibre-fed echelle spectrograph

Context: Instrumental profile (IP) is the basic property of a spectrograph. Accurate IP characterisation is the prerequisite of accurate wavelength solution. It also facilitates new spectral acquisition methods such as the forward modeling and deconvolution. Aims: We investigate an IP modeling method for the fibre-fed echelle spectrograph with the emission lines of the ThAr lamp, and explore the method to evaluate the accuracy of IP characterisation. Methods: The backbone-residual (BR) model is put forward and tested on the fibre-fed High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) at the Chinese Xinglong 2.16-m Telescope, which is the sum of the backbone function and the residual function. The backbone function is a bell-shaped function to describe the main component and the spatial variation of IP. The residual function, which is expressed as the cubic spline function, accounts for the difference between the bell-shaped function and the actual IP. The method of evaluating the accuracy of IP characterisation is based on the spectral reconstruction and Monte Carlo simulation. Results: The IP of HRS is characterised with the BR model, and the accuracy of the characterised IP reaches 0.006 of the peak value of the backbone function. This result demonstrates that the accurate IP characterisation has been achieved on HRS with the BR model, and the BR model is an excellent choice for accurate IP characterisation of fibre-fed echelle spectrographs.

Latent Opinions Transfer Network for Target-Oriented Opinion Words Extraction

Target-oriented opinion words extraction (TOWE) is a new subtask of ABSA, which aims to extract the corresponding opinion words for a given opinion target in a sentence. Recently, neural network methods have been applied to this task and achieve promising results. However, the difficulty of annotation causes the datasets of TOWE to be insufficient, which heavily limits the performance of neural models. By contrast, abundant review sentiment classification data are easily available at online review sites. These reviews contain substantial latent opinions information and semantic patterns. In this paper, we propose a novel model to transfer these opinions knowledge from resource-rich review sentiment classification datasets to low-resource task TOWE. To address the challenges in the transfer process, we design an effective transformation method to obtain latent opinions, then integrate them into TOWE. Extensive experimental results show that our model achieves better performance compared to other state-of-the-art methods and significantly outperforms the base model without transferring opinions knowledge. Further analysis validates the effectiveness of our model.

Multi-Band Multi-Resolution Fully Convolutional Neural Networks for Singing Voice Separation

Deep neural networks with convolutional layers usually process the entire spectrogram of an audio signal with the same time-frequency resolutions, number of filters, and dimensionality reduction scale. According to the constant-Q transform, good features can be extracted from audio signals if the low frequency bands are processed with high frequency resolution filters and the high frequency bands with high time resolution filters. In the spectrogram of a mixture of singing voices and music signals, there is usually more information about the voice in the low frequency bands than the high frequency bands. These raise the need for processing each part of the spectrogram differently. In this paper, we propose a multi-band multi-resolution fully convolutional neural network (MBR-FCN) for singing voice separation. The MBR-FCN processes the frequency bands that have more information about the target signals with more filters and smaller dimentionality reduction scale than the bands with less information. Furthermore, the MBR-FCN processes the low frequency bands with high frequency resolution filters and the high frequency bands with high time resolution filters. Our experimental results show that the proposed MBR-FCN with very few parameters achieves better singing voice separation performance than other deep neural networks.

Harnack and Super Poincaré Inequalities for Generalized Cox-Ingersoll-Ross Model

In this paper, the Harnack inequalities and super-Poincaré inequality for generalized CIR model are obtained. Since the noise is degenerate, the intrinsic metric has been introduced to construct the coupling by change of measure. By using isopermetric constant, the optimal estimate of the rate function in the super Poincaré inequality for the associated Dirichlet form is also obtained.

A Weak Modulation Effect Detected in the Light Curves of KIC 5950759: Intrinsic or Instrumental Effect?

In this paper, the high-precision light curves of $Kepler$ target KIC 5950759 are analyzed. The Fourier analysis of the long cadence light curve reveals 3 independent frequencies. Two of them are main pulsation modes: F0 = 14.221373(21) $\rm{d^{-1}}$ and F1 = 18.337249(44) $\rm{d^{-1}}$. The third independent frequency $f_m$ = 0.3193 d$^{-1}$ is found in long cadence data with a signal-to-noise ratio of 6.2. A weak modulation of $f_m$ to F0 and F1 modes (triplet structures centred on F0 and F1) are detected both in long and short cadence data. This is the first detection of the modulation effect in a double-mode HADS star. The most possible cause of the modulation effect in the light curves is amplitude modulation with the star's rotation frequency of 0.3193 d$^{-1}$. The preliminary analysis suggests that KIC 5950759 is in the bottom of the HADS instability strip and likely situated in the main sequence. Spectroscopic observations are necessary to verify the true nature of the modulation terms.

Visible astro-comb filtered by a passively-stabilized Fabry-Perot cavity

We demonstrate a compact 29.3 GHz visible astro-comb covering the spectrum from 560nm to 700nm. A 837 MHz Yb:fiber laser frequency comb phase locked to a Rb clock served as the seed comb to ensure the frequency stability and high side mode suppression ratio. After the visible super-continuum generation, a cavity-length-fixed Fabry-Perot cavity made by ultra-low expansion glass was utilized to filter the comb teeth for eliminating the rapid active dithering. The mirrors were home-made complementary chirped mirrors pair with zero dispersion and high reflection to guarantee no mode skipping. These filtered comb teeth were clearly resolved in an astronomical spectrograph of 49,000 resolution, exhibiting sharp linetype, zero noise floor, and uniform exposure amplitude.

A Pair of Giant Planets around the Evolved Intermediate-Mass Star HD 47366: Multiple Circular Orbits or a Mutually Retrograde Configuration

We report the detection of a double planetary system around the evolved intermediate-mass star HD 47366 from precise radial-velocity measurements at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, Xinglong Station, and Australian Astronomical Observatory. The star is a K1 giant with a mass of 1.81+-0.13M_sun, a radius of 7.30+-0.33R_sun, and solar metallicity. The planetary system is composed of two giant planets with minimum mass of 1.75^{+0.20}_{-0.17}Mjup and 1.86^{+0.16}_{-0.15}Mjup, orbital period of 363.3^{+2.5}_{-2.4} d and 684.7^{+5.0}_{-4.9} d, and eccentricity of 0.089^{+0.079}_{-0.060} and 0.278^{+0.067}_{-0.094}, respectively, which are derived by a double Keplerian orbital fit to the radial-velocity data. The system adds to the population of multi-giant-planet systems with relatively small orbital separations, which are preferentially found around evolved intermediate-mass stars. Dynamical stability analysis for the system revealed, however, that the best-fit orbits are unstable in the case of a prograde configuration. The system could be stable if the planets were in 2:1 mean-motion resonance, but this is less likely considering the observed period ratio and eccentricity. A present possible scenario for the system is that both of the planets have nearly circular orbits, namely the eccentricity of the outer planet is less than ~0.15, which is just within 1.4sigma of the best-fit value, or the planets are in a mutually retrograde configuration with a mutual orbital inclination larger than 160 degree.

Magnetic rogue wave in a perpendicular anisotropic ferromagnetic nanowire with spin-transfer torque

We present the current controlled motion of dynamic soliton embedded in spin wave background in ferromagnetic nanowire. With the stronger breather character we get the novel magnetic rogue wave and clarify its formation mechanism. The generation of magnetic rogue wave is mainly arose from the accumulation of energy and magnons toward to its central part. We also observe that the spin-polarized current can control the exchange rate of magnons between envelope soliton and background, and the critical current condition is obtained analytically. Even more interesting is that the spin-transfer torque plays the completely opposite role for the cases of below and above the critical value.
