SurroundNet: Towards Effective Low-Light Image Enhancement

Although Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) has made substantial progress in the low-light image enhancement task, one critical problem of CNNs is the paradox of model complexity and performance. This paper presents a novel SurroundNet which only involves less than 150$K$ parameters (about 80-98 percent size reduction compared to SOTAs) and achieves very competitive performance. The proposed network comprises several Adaptive Retinex Blocks (ARBlock), which can be viewed as a novel extension of Single Scale Retinex in feature space. The core of our ARBlock is an efficient illumination estimation function called Adaptive Surround Function (ASF). It can be regarded as a general form of surround functions and be implemented by convolution layers. In addition, we also introduce a Low-Exposure Denoiser (LED) to smooth the low-light image before the enhancement. We evaluate the proposed method on the real-world low-light dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that the superiority of our submitted SurroundNet in both performance and network parameters against State-of-the-Art low-light image enhancement methods. Phonon-laser ultrasensitive force sensor

Developing nano-mechanical oscillators for ultrasensitive force detection is of great importance in exploring science. We report our achievement of ultrasensitive detection of the external force regarding the radio-frequency electric field by a nano-sensor made of a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ ion under injection-locking, where squeezing is additionally applied to detection of the smallest force in the ion trap. The employed ion is confined stably in a surface electrode trap and works as a phonon laser that is very sensitive to the external disturbance. The injection-locking drove the ion's oscillation with phase synchronization, yielding the force detection with sensitivity of 347 $\pm$ 50 yN/$\sqrt{Hz}$. Further with 3 dB squeezing applied on the oscillation phase variance, we achieved a successful detection of the smallest force to be 86.5 $\pm$ 70.1 yN.

Towards Disentangling Latent Space for Unsupervised Semantic Face Editing

Facial attributes in StyleGAN generated images are entangled in the latent space which makes it very difficult to independently control a specific attribute without affecting the others. Supervised attribute editing requires annotated training data which is difficult to obtain and limits the editable attributes to those with labels. Therefore, unsupervised attribute editing in an disentangled latent space is key to performing neat and versatile semantic face editing. In this paper, we present a new technique termed Structure-Texture Independent Architecture with Weight Decomposition and Orthogonal Regularization (STIA-WO) to disentangle the latent space for unsupervised semantic face editing. By applying STIA-WO to GAN, we have developed a StyleGAN termed STGAN-WO which performs weight decomposition through utilizing the style vector to construct a fully controllable weight matrix to regulate image synthesis, and employs orthogonal regularization to ensure each entry of the style vector only controls one independent feature matrix. To further disentangle the facial attributes, STGAN-WO introduces a structure-texture independent architecture which utilizes two independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) latent vectors to control the synthesis of the texture and structure components in a disentangled way. Unsupervised semantic editing is achieved by moving the latent code in the coarse layers along its orthogonal directions to change texture related attributes or changing the latent code in the fine layers to manipulate structure related ones. We present experimental results which show that our new STGAN-WO can achieve better attribute editing than state of the art methods.

Sparse group variable selection for gene-environment interactions in the longitudinal study

Penalized variable selection for high dimensional longitudinal data has received much attention as accounting for the correlation among repeated measurements and providing additional and essential information for improved identification and prediction performance. Despite the success, in longitudinal studies the potential of penalization methods is far from fully understood for accommodating structured sparsity. In this article, we develop a sparse group penalization method to conduct the bi-level gene-environment (G$\times$E) interaction study under the repeatedly measured phenotype. Within the quadratic inference function (QIF) framework, the proposed method can achieve simultaneous identification of main and interaction effects on both the group and individual level. Simulation studies have shown that the proposed method outperforms major competitors. In the case study of asthma data from the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP), we conduct G$\times$E study by using high dimensional SNP data as the Genetic factor and the longitudinal trait, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), as phenotype. Our method leads to improved prediction and identification of main and interaction effects with important implications.

Authentication of Metropolitan Quantum Key Distribution Network with Post-quantum Cryptography

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides information theoretically secures key exchange requiring authentication of the classic data processing channel via pre-sharing of symmetric private keys. In previous studies, the lattice-based post-quantum digital signature algorithm Aigis-Sig, combined with public-key infrastructure (PKI) was used to achieve high-efficiency quantum security authentication of QKD, and its advantages in simplifying the MAN network structure and new user entry were demonstrated. This experiment further integrates the PQC algorithm into the commercial QKD system, the Jinan field metropolitan QKD network comprised of 14 user nodes and 5 optical switching nodes. The feasibility, effectiveness and stability of the post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithm and advantages of replacing trusted relays with optical switching brought by PQC authentication large-scale metropolitan area QKD network were verified. QKD with PQC authentication has potential in quantum-secure communications, specifically in metropolitan QKD networks.

Topological Quantum Criticality in Superfluids and Superconductors: Surface criticality, Thermal properties, and Lifshitz Majorana fields

Time reversal invariant (TRI) topological superfluids (TSFs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) are robust symmetry protected gapped topological states. In this article, we study the evolution of these topological states in the presence of time reversal symmetry breaking (TRB) fields and/or sufficiently large TRI fields. Physically, one of the realizations of TRB fields can be internal spin exchange fields due to background magnetic ordering. We find that the fully gapped TSFs and TSCs are generically separated from other nodal states by various zero temperature quantum critical points that are characterized by generalized quantum Lifshitz fields with distinct scaling properties. These emergent Lifshitz fields also define finite temperature properties in quantum critical regimes. Moreover, for a certain subset of TRB fields, there exist a precursor to bulk transitions, where surface states can also exhibit quantum critical behavior near zero fields. The possibility for a fully gapped TSF/TSC to smoothly crossover into a topologically trivial state without a phase transition is also examined.

Revisiting the third-order elastic constants of diamond: the higher-order effect

In this letter, we study the higher-order effect on the third-order elastic constants (TOECs) of diamond using longitudinal stress-uniaxial strain (LSUS) approach based on density functional theory. The result shows that the higher-order effect on TOECs is not negligible in the shock wave experiments and similar calculations. By taking the higher-order elastic response (up to fifth order) into consideration, the convergence of TOECs against maximum stain gets improved significantly and resolves the discrepancy of several different theoretical methods and experiments.

Dynamics of strongly interacting Fermi gases with time-dependent interactions: Consequence of conformal symmetry

In this Letter, we investigate the effects of a time-dependent, short-ranged interaction on the long-time expansion dynamics of Fermi gases. We show that the effects of the interaction on the dynamics is dictated by how it changes under a conformal transformation, and derive an explicit criterion for the relevancy of time-dependent interactions in both the strongly and non-interacting nearly scale invariant quantum gases. In addition, we show that it is possible to engineer interactions that give rise to non-exponential thermalization dynamics in trapped Fermi gases. To supplement the symmetry analysis, we also perform hydrodynamic simulations to show that the moment of inertia of the trapped gas indeed follows a universal time-dependence determined jointly by the conformal symmetry and time-dependent scattering length $a(t)$. Our results should also be relevant to the dynamics of other systems that are nearly scale invariant and that are governed by a non-relativistic conformal symmetry.

Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution over 511 km Optical Fiber Linking two Distant Metropolitans

The basic principle of quantum mechanics guarantee the unconditional security of quantum key distribution (QKD) at the cost of inability of amplification of quantum state. As a result, despite remarkable progress in worldwide metropolitan QKD networks over the past decades, long haul fiber QKD network without trustful relay has not been achieved yet. Here, through sending-or-not-sending (SNS) protocol, we complete a twin field QKD (TF-QKD) and distribute secure keys without any trusted repeater over a 511 km long haul fiber trunk linking two distant metropolitans. Our secure key rate is around 3 orders of magnitudes greater than what is expected if the previous QKD field test system over the same length were applied. The efficient quantum-state transmission and stable single-photon interference over such a long distance deployed fiber paves the way to large-scale fiber quantum networks.

VHS to HDTV Video Translation using Multi-task Adversarial Learning

There are large amount of valuable video archives in Video Home System (VHS) format. However, due to the analog nature, their quality is often poor. Compared to High-definition television (HDTV), VHS video not only has a dull color appearance but also has a lower resolution and often appears blurry. In this paper, we focus on the problem of translating VHS video to HDTV video and have developed a solution based on a novel unsupervised multi-task adversarial learning model. Inspired by the success of generative adversarial network (GAN) and CycleGAN, we employ cycle consistency loss, adversarial loss and perceptual loss together to learn a translation model. An important innovation of our work is the incorporation of super-resolution model and color transfer model that can solve unsupervised multi-task problem. To our knowledge, this is the first work that dedicated to the study of the relation between VHS and HDTV and the first computational solution to translate VHS to HDTV. We present experimental results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution qualitatively and quantitatively.

Field Test of Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution through Sending-or-Not-Sending over 428 km

Quantum key distribution endows people with information-theoretical security in communications. Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) has attracted considerable attention because of its outstanding key rates over long distances. Recently, several demonstrations of TF-QKD have been realized. Nevertheless, those experiments are implemented in the laboratory, remaining a critical question about whether the TF-QKD is feasible in real-world circumstances. Here, by adopting the sending-or-not-sending twin-field QKD (SNS-TF-QKD) with the method of actively odd parity pairing (AOPP), we demonstrate a field-test QKD over 428~km deployed commercial fiber and two users are physically separated by about 300~km in a straight line. To this end, we explicitly measure the relevant properties of the deployed fiber and develop a carefully designed system with high stability. The secure key rate we achieved breaks the absolute key rate limit of repeater-less QKD. The result provides a new distance record for the field test of both TF-QKD and all types of fiber-based QKD systems. Our work bridges the gap of QKD between laboratory demonstrations and practical applications, and paves the way for intercity QKD network with high-speed and measurement-device-independent security.

Attentional Local Contrast Networks for Infrared Small Target Detection

To mitigate the issue of minimal intrinsic features for pure data-driven methods, in this paper, we propose a novel model-driven deep network for infrared small target detection, which combines discriminative networks and conventional model-driven methods to make use of both labeled data and the domain knowledge. By designing a feature map cyclic shift scheme, we modularize a conventional local contrast measure method as a depth-wise parameterless nonlinear feature refinement layer in an end-to-end network, which encodes relatively long-range contextual interactions with clear physical interpretability. To highlight and preserve the small target features, we also exploit a bottom-up attentional modulation integrating the smaller scale subtle details of low-level features into high-level features of deeper layers. We conduct detailed ablation studies with varying network depths to empirically verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the design of each component in our network architecture. We also compare the performance of our network against other model-driven methods and deep networks on the open SIRST dataset as well. The results suggest that our network yields a performance boost over its competitors. Our code, trained models, and results are available online.

Meta-Generating Deep Attentive Metric for Few-shot Classification

Learning to generate a task-aware base learner proves a promising direction to deal with few-shot learning (FSL) problem. Existing methods mainly focus on generating an embedding model utilized with a fixed metric (eg, cosine distance) for nearest neighbour classification or directly generating a linear classier. However, due to the limited discriminative capacity of such a simple metric or classifier, these methods fail to generalize to challenging cases appropriately. To mitigate this problem, we present a novel deep metric meta-generation method that turns to an orthogonal direction, ie, learning to adaptively generate a specific metric for a new FSL task based on the task description (eg, a few labelled samples). In this study, we structure the metric using a three-layer deep attentive network that is flexible enough to produce a discriminative metric for each task. Moreover, different from existing methods that utilize an uni-modal weight distribution conditioned on labelled samples for network generation, the proposed meta-learner establishes a multi-modal weight distribution conditioned on cross-class sample pairs using a tailored variational autoencoder, which can separately capture the specific inter-class discrepancy statistics for each class and jointly embed the statistics for all classes into metric generation. By doing this, the generated metric can be appropriately adapted to a new FSL task with pleasing generalization performance. To demonstrate this, we test the proposed method on four benchmark FSL datasets and gain surprisingly obvious performance improvement over state-of-the-art competitors, especially in the challenging cases, eg, improve the accuracy from 26.14% to 46.69% in the 20-way 1-shot task on miniImageNet, while improve the accuracy from 45.2% to 68.72% in the 5-way 1-shot task on FC100. Asymmetric Contextual Modulation for Infrared Small Target Detection

Single-frame infrared small target detection remains a challenge not only due to the scarcity of intrinsic target characteristics but also because of lacking a public dataset. In this paper, we first contribute an open dataset with high-quality annotations to advance the research in this field. We also propose an asymmetric contextual modulation module specially designed for detecting infrared small targets. To better highlight small targets, besides a top-down global contextual feedback, we supplement a bottom-up modulation pathway based on point-wise channel attention for exchanging high-level semantics and subtle low-level details. We report ablation studies and comparisons to state-of-the-art methods, where we find that our approach performs significantly better. Our dataset and code are available online.

Selection of strain and fitting schemes for calculating higher-order elastic constants

Criteria of selecting strain and fitting schemes are proposed for the calculation of higher-order elastic constants more efficiently, robustly and accurately. As demonstrated by the third-order elastic constants (TOECs) of diamond, the proposed method is 3-5 times faster than existing methods, and the range of strain for getting correct TOECs is expanded. In addition, our result provides an evidence for the inaccuracy of some previous experiments caused by higher-order effect, and the difference among experiments and several different theoretical methods is resolved. Finally, we give the recommend TOECs values for diamond.

Self-Supervised Learning and Prediction of Microstructure Evolution with Recurrent Neural Networks

Microstructural evolution is a key aspect of understanding and exploiting the structure-property-performance relation of materials. Modeling microstructure evolution usually relies on coarse-grained simulations with evolution principles described by partial differential equations (PDEs). Here we demonstrate that convolutional recurrent neural networks can learn the underlying physical rules and replace PDE-based simulations in the prediction of microstructure phenomena. Neural nets are trained by self-supervised learning with image sequences from simulations of several common processes, including plane wave propagation, grain growth, spinodal decomposition and dendritic crystal growth. The trained networks can accurately predict both short-term local dynamics and long-term statistical properties of microstructures and is capable of extrapolating beyond the training datasets in spatiotemporal domains and configurational and parametric spaces. Such a data-driven approach offers significant advantages over PDE-based simulations in time stepping efficiency and offers a useful alternative especially when the material parameters or governing PDEs are not well determined.

Robust Bayesian variable selection for gene-environment interactions

Gene-environment (G$\times$E) interactions have important implications to elucidate the etiology of complex diseases beyond the main genetic and environmental effects. Outliers and data contamination in disease phenotypes of G$\times$E studies have been commonly encountered, leading to the development of a broad spectrum of robust regularization methods. Nevertheless, within the Bayesian framework, the issue has not been taken care of in existing studies. We develop a fully Bayesian robust variable selection method for G$\times$E interaction studies. The proposed Bayesian method can effectively accommodate heavy-tailed errors and outliers in the response variable while conducting variable selection by accounting for structural sparsity. In particular, for the robust sparse group selection, the spike-and-slab priors have been imposed on both individual and group levels to identify important main and interaction effects robustly. An efficient Gibbs sampler has been developed to facilitate fast computation. Extensive simulation studies and analysis of both the diabetes data with SNP measurements from the Nurses' Health Study and TCGA melanoma data with gene expression measurements demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method over multiple competing alternatives.

Gene-Environment Interaction: A Variable Selection Perspective

Gene-environment interactions have important implications to elucidate the genetic basis of complex diseases beyond the joint function of multiple genetic factors and their interactions (or epistasis). In the past, G$\times$E interactions have been mainly conducted within the framework of genetic association studies. The high dimensionality of G$\times$E interactions, due to the complicated form of environmental effects and presence of a large number of genetic factors including gene expressions and SNPs, has motivated the recent development of penalized variable selection methods for dissecting G$\times$E interactions, which has been ignored in majority of published reviews on genetic interaction studies. In this article, we first survey existing overviews on both gene-environment and gene-gene interactions. Then, after a brief introduction on the variable selection methods, we review penalization and relevant variable selection methods in marginal and joint paradigms respectively under a variety of conceptual models. Discussions on strengths and limitations, as well as computational aspects of the variable selection methods tailored for G$\times$E studies have also been provided.
