Quantum chaos associated with emergent ergosurface in transition layer between type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals

We present emergent ergosurfaces (ES) in a transition layer between type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals (WSMs). The Hawking temperature defined by the surface gravity at the acoustic event horizon which coincides with the ES when the tangent velocity $v_{\parallel}$ is small is in a measurable interval. On the type-II WSM side, i.e., inside the {ES when $v_{\parallel}$ is large}, the motion of the quasiparticles may be chaotic {after} a critical surface as they are governed by an effective inverted oscillator potential induced by the mismatch between the type-I and type-II Weyl nodes. In a relevant lattice model, we calculate out of time ordered correlators (OTOCs). We find that the OTOCs are fast scrambling with a quantum Lyapunov exponent in high temperature and the scrambling is saturated after the Ehrenfest time. This confirms the quantum chaotic behavior.

Anomalous magnetic transport and extra quantum oscillation in semi-metallic photon-like fermion gas

In the absence of Lorentz symmetry, the pseudospin-1 counterpart of Weyl fermion (feroton) with linear dispersions and an exact flat band can emerge in condensed matter systems. The flat band branch of feroton is equivalent to the longitudinal photon in Maxwell theory, which is a redundant degree of freedom due to the emergent (fermionic) gauge symmetry. Upon coupling to an external magnetic field, the fermionic guage symmetry is broken and the flat band ferotons become gapless excitations characterized by Landau level indices ($n>1$). In the long wave length limit, these gapless modes are of the opposite chirality to the chiral anomaly related zero Landau level, which leads to much more plentiful magnetic transport properties. To further explore the novel properties of these gapless modes, we investigate the quantum oscillation through a generalized Lieb lattice model. We find an extra oscillating behavior which indicates the existence of these exotic gapless modes. We collect known {\it ab initio} calculation data from literature and discuss the possibility of realizing the semi-metallic feroton gas in real materials.

Emergent quantum criticality from spin-orbital entanglement in $d^8$ Mott insulators: the case of a diamond lattice antiferromagnet

Motivated by the recent activities on the Ni-based diamond lattice antiferromagnet NiRh$_2$O$_4$, we theoretically explore on a general ground the unique spin and orbital physics for the Ni$^{2+}$ ions with a $3d^8$ electron configuration in the tetrahedral crystal field environment and on a diamond lattice Mott insulator. The superexchange interaction between the local moments usually favors magnetic orders. Due to the particular electron configuration of the Ni$^{2+}$ ion with a partially filled upper $t_{2g}$ level and a fully filled lower $e_g$ level, the atomic spin-orbit coupling becomes active at the linear order and would favor a spin-orbital-entangled singlet with quenched local moments in the single-ion limit. Thus, the spin-orbital entanglement competes with the superexchange and could drive the system to a quantum critical point that separates the spin-orbital singlet and the magnetic order. We further explore the effects of magnetic field and uniaxial pressure. The non-trivial response to the magnetic field is intimately tied to the underlying spin-orbital structure of the local moments. We discuss the future experiments such as doping and pressure, and point out the correspondence between different electron configurations.

Kitaev materials beyond iridates: order by quantum disorder and Weyl magnons in rare-earth double perovskites

Motivated by the experiments on the rare-earth double perovskites, we propose a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model to describe the generic interaction between the spin-orbit-entangled Kramers' doublets of the rare-earth moments. We carry out a systematic analysis of the mean-field phase diagram of this new model. In the phase diagram, there exist large regions with a continuous U(1) or O(3) degeneracy. Since no symmetry of the model protects such a continuous degeneracy, we predict that the quantum fluctuation lifts the continuous degeneracy and favors various magnetic orders in the phase diagram. From this order by quantum disorder mechanism, we further predict that the magnetic excitations of the resulting ordered phases are characterized by nearly gapless pseudo-Goldstone modes. We find that there exist Weyl magnon excitations for certain magnetic orders. We expect our prediction to inspire further study of Kitaev physics, the order by quantum disorder phenomenon and topological spin wave modes in the rare-earth magnets and the systems alike.

Weyl magnons in breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnets

Frustrated quantum magnets not only provide exotic ground states and unusual magnetic structures, but also support unconventional excitations in many cases. Using a physically relevant spin model for a breathing pyrochlore lattice, we discuss the presence of topological linear band crossings of magnons in antiferromagnets. These are the analogs of Weyl fermions in electronic systems, which we dub Weyl magnons. The bulk Weyl magnon implies the presence of chiral magnon surface states forming arcs at finite energy. We argue that such antiferromagnets present a unique example in which Weyl points can be manipulated in situ in the laboratory by applied fields. We discuss their appearance specifically in the breathing pyrochlore lattice, and give some general discussion of conditions to find Weyl magnons and how they may be probed experimentally. Our work may inspire a re-examination of the magnetic excitations in many magnetically ordered systems.

Hybrid Weyl Semimetal

We construct a tight-binding model realizing one pair of Weyl nodes and three distinct Weyl semimetals. In the type-I (type-II) Weyl semimetal, both nodes belong to type-I (type-II) Weyl nodes. In addition, there exists a novel type, dubbed "hybrid Weyl semimetal", in which one Weyl node is of type-I while the other is of type-II. For the hybrid Weyl semimetal, we further demonstrate the bulk Fermi surfaces and the topologically protected surface states, analyze the unique Landau level structure and quantum oscillation, and discuss the material realization.
