Global well-posedness and large-time behavior of classical solutions to the Euler-Navier-Stokes system in R^3

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of a two-phase flow system consisting of the compressible isothermal Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through the drag force, which can be formally derived from the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. When the initial data is a small perturbation around an equilibrium state, we prove the global well-posedness of the classical solutions to this system and show the solutions tends to the equilibrium state as time goes to infinity. In order to resolve the main difficulty arising from the pressure term of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, we properly use the Hodge decomposition, spectral analysis, and energy method to obtain the $L^2$ time decay rates of the solution when the initial perturbation belongs to $L^1$ space. Furthermore, we show that the above time decay rates are optimal.

Nonlinear asymptotic stability of compressible vortex sheets with viscosity effects

This paper concerns the stabilizing effect of viscosity on the vortex sheets. It is found that although a vortex sheet is not a time-asymptotic attractor for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, a viscous wave that approximates the vortex sheet on any finite time interval can be constructed explicitly, which is shown to be time-asymptotically stable in the $ L^\infty $-space with small perturbations, regardless of the amplitude of the vortex sheet. The result shows that the viscosity has a strong stabilizing effect on the vortex sheets, which are generally unstable for the ideal compressible Euler equations even for short time [26,8,1]. The proof is based on the $ L^2 $-energy method. In particular, the asymptotic stability of the vortex sheet under small spatially periodic perturbations is proved by studying the dynamics of these spatial oscillations. The first key point in our analysis is to construct an ansatz to cancel these oscillations. Then using the Galilean transformation, we are able to find a shift function of the vortex sheet such that an anti-derivative technique works, which plays an important role in the energy estimates. Moreover, by introducing a new variable and using the intrinsic properties of the vortex sheet, we can achieve the optimal decay rates to the viscous wave.

Hilbert expansion of the Boltzmann equation in the incompressible Euler level in a channel

The study of hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation with physical boundary is a challenging problem due to appearance of the viscous and Knudsen boundary layers. In this paper, the hydrodynamic limit from the Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition to the incompressible Euler in a channel is investigated. Based on the multiscaled Hilbert expansion, the equations with boundary conditions and compatibility conditions for interior solutions, viscous and Knudsen boundary layers are derived under different scaling, respectively. Then some uniform estimates for the interior solutions, viscous and Knudsen boundary layers are established. With the help of $L^2-L^\infty$ framework and the uniform estimates obtained above, the solutions to the Boltzmann equation are constructed by the truncated Hilbert expansion with multiscales, and hence the hydrodynamic limit in the incompressible Euler level is justified.

Global well-posedness and optimal time decay rates of solutions to the pressureless Euler-Navier-Stokes system

In this paper, we present a new framework for the global well-posedness and large-time behavior of a two-phase flow system, which consists of the pressureless Euler equations and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through the drag force. To overcome the difficulties arising from the absence of the pressure term in the Euler equations, we establish the time decay estimates of the high-order derivative of the velocity to obtain uniform estimates of the fluid density. The upper bound decay rates are obtained by designing a new functional and the lower bound decay rates are achieved by selecting specific initial data. Moreover, the upper bound decay rates are the same order as the lower one. Therefore, the time decay rates are optimal. When the fluid density in the pressureless Euler flow vanishes, the system is reduced into an incompressible Navier-Stokes flow. In this case, our works coincide with the classical results by Schonbek \cite{M.S3} [JAMS,1991], which can be regarded as a generalization from a single fluid model to the two-phase fluid one.

Global Solutions of the Two-Dimensional Riemann Problem with Four-Shock Interactions for the Euler Equations for Potential Flow

We present a rigorous approach and related techniques to construct global solutions of the 2-D Riemann problem with four-shock interactions for the Euler equations for potential flow. With the introduction of three critical angles: the vacuum critical angle from the compatibility conditions, the detachment angle, and the sonic angle, we clarify all configurations of the Riemann solutions for the interactions of two-forward and two-backward shocks, including the subsonic-subsonic reflection configuration that has not emerged in previous results. To achieve this, we first identify the three critical angles that determine the configurations, whose existence and uniqueness follow from our rigorous proof of the strict monotonicity of the steady detachment and sonic angles for 2-D steady potential flow with respect to the Mach number of the upstream state. Then we reformulate the 2-D Riemann problem into the shock reflection-diffraction problem with respect to a symmetric line, along with two independent incident angles and two sonic boundaries varying with the choice of incident angles. With these, the problem can be further reformulated as a free boundary problem for a second-order quasilinear equation of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type. The difficulties arise from the degenerate ellipticity of the nonlinear equation near the sonic boundaries, the nonlinearity of the free boundary condition, the singularity of the solution near the corners of the domain, and the geometric properties of the free boundary. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first rigorous result for the 2-D Riemann problem with four-shock interactions for the Euler equations. The approach and techniques developed for the Riemann problem for four-wave interactions should be useful for solving other 2-D Riemann problems for more general Euler equations and related nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws.

Uniqueness of composite wave of shock and rarefaction in the inviscid limit of Navier-Stokes equations

The uniqueness of entropy solution for the compressible Euler equations is a fundamental and challenging problem. In this paper, the uniqueness of a composite wave of shock and rarefaction of 1-d compressible Euler equations is proved in the inviscid limit of compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the relative entropy around the original Riemann solution consisting of shock and rarefaction under the large perturbation is shown to be uniformly bounded by the framework developed in \cite{Kang-Vasseur-2021-Invent}. The proof contains two new ingredients: 1) a cut-off technique and the expanding property of rarefaction are used to overcome the errors generated by the viscosity related to inviscid rarefaction; 2) the error terms concerning the interactions between shock and rarefaction are controlled by the compressibility of shock, the decay of derivative of rarefaction and the separation of shock and rarefaction as time increases.

The time asymptotic expansion for the compressible Euler equations with damping

In 1992, Hsiao and Liu \cite{Hsiao-Liu-1} firstly showed that the solution to the compressible Euler equations with damping time-asymptotically converges to the diffusion wave $(\bar v, \bar u)$ of the porous media equation. In \cite{Geng-Huang-Jin-Wu}, we proposed a time-asymptotic expansion around the diffusion wave $(\bar v, \bar u)$, which is a better asymptotic profile than $(\bar v, \bar u)$. In this paper, we rigorously justify the time-asymptotic expansion by the approximate Green function method and the energy estimates. Moreover, the large time behavior of the solution to compressible Euler equations with damping is accurately characterized by the time asymptotic expansion.

The time asymptotic expansion for the compressible Euler equations with time-dependent damping

In this paper, we study the compressible Euler equations with time-dependent damping $-\frac{1}{(1+t)^λ}ρu$. We propose a time asymptotic expansion around the self-similar solution of the generalized porous media equation (GPME) and rigorously justify this expansion as $λ\in (\frac17,1)$. In other word, instead of the self-similar solution of GPME, the expansion is the best asymptotic profile of the solution to the compressible Euler equations with time-dependent damping.

Large time behavior of strong solutions for stochastic Burgers equation

We consider the large time behavior of strong solutions to a kind of stochastic Burgers equation, where the position x is perturbed by a Brownian noise. It is well known that both the rarefaction wave and viscous shock wave are time-asymptotically stable for deterministic Burgers equation since the pioneer work of A. Ilin and O. Oleinik [21] in 1964. However, the stability of these wave patterns under stochastic perturbation is not known until now. In this paper, we give a definite answer to the stability problem of the rarefaction and viscous shock waves for the 1-d stochastic Burgers equation. That is, the rarefaction wave is still stable under white noise perturbation and the viscous shock is not stable yet. Moreover, a time-convergence rate toward the rarefaction wave is obtained. To get the desired decay rate, an important inequality (denoted by Area Inequality) is derived. This inequality plays essential role in the proof, and may have applications in the related problems for both the stochastic and deterministic PDEs.

Stability of planar rarefaction waves for scalar viscous conservation law under periodic perturbations

The large time behavior of the solutions to a multi-dimensional viscous conservation law is considered in this paper. It is shown that the solution time-asymptotically tends to the planar rarefaction wave if the initial perturbations are multi-dimensional periodic. The time-decay rate is also obtained. Moreover, a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality is established in the domain $ \mathbb R \times \mathbb T^{n-1} (n\geq2) $, where $\mathbb T^{n-1}$ is the $ n-1 $-dimensional torus.

Stability of transonic contact discontinuity for two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows in a finitely long nozzle

We consider the stability of transonic contact discontinuity for the two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows in a finitely long nozzle. This is the first work on the mixed-type problem of transonic flows across a contact discontinuity as a free boundary in nozzles. We start with the Euler-Lagrangian transformation to straighten the contact discontinuity in the new coordinates. However, the upper nozzle wall in the subsonic region depending on the mass flux becomes a free boundary after the transformation. Then we develop new ideas and techniques to solve the free-boundary problem in three steps: (1) we fix the free boundary and generate a new iteration scheme to solve the corresponding fixed boundary value problem of the hyperbolic-elliptic mixed type by building some powerful estimates for both the first-order hyperbolic equation and a second-order nonlinear elliptic equation in a Lipschitz domain; (2) we update the new free boundary by constructing a mapping that has a fixed point; (3) we establish via the inverse Lagrangian coordinates transformation that the original free interface problem admits a unique piecewise smooth transonic solution near the background state, which consists of a smooth subsonic flow and a smooth supersonic flow with a contact discontinuity.

Persistence of the steady planar normal shock structure in 3-D unsteady potential flows

This paper concerns the dynamic stability of the steady 3-D wave structure of a planar normal shock front intersecting perpendicularly to a planar solid wall for unsteady potential flows. The stability problem can be formulated as a free boundary problem of a quasi-linear hyperbolic equation of second order in a dihedral-space domain between the shock front and the solid wall. The key difficulty is brought by the edge singularity of the space domain, the intersection curve between the shock front and the solid wall. Different from the 2-D case, for which the singular part of the boundary is only a point, it is a curve for the 3-D case in this paper. This difference brings new difficulties to the mathematical analysis of the stability problem. A modified partial hodograph transformation is introduced such that the extension technique developed for the 2-D case can be employed to establish the well-posed theory for the initial-boundary value problem of the linearized hyperbolic equation of second order in a dihedral-space domain. Moreover, the extension technique is improved in this paper such that loss of regularity in the a priori estimates on the shock front does not occur. Thus the classical nonlinear iteration scheme can be constructed to prove the existence of the solution to the stability problem, which shows the dynamic stability of the steady planar normal shock without applying the Nash-Moser iteration method.

Weak entropy solution for a Keller-Segel type fluid model

In this paper, we consider a Keller-Segel type fluid model, which is a kind of Euler-Poisson system with a self-gravitational force. We show that similar to the parabolic case, there is a critical mass $8π$ such that if the initial total mass $M$ is supercritical, i.e., $M> 8π$, then any weak entropy solution with the same mass $M$ must blow up in finite time. The a priori estimates of weak entropy solutions for critical mass $M=8π$ and subcritical mass $M<8π$ are also obtained.

Stability of large-amplitude viscous shock under periodic perturbation for 1-d isentropic Navier-Stokes equations

The stability of solutions under periodic perturbations for both inviscid and viscous conservation laws is an interesting and important problem. In this paper, a large-amplitude viscous shock under space-periodic perturbation for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is considered. It is shown that if the initial perturbation around the shock is suitably small and satisfies a zero-mass type condition (2.17), then the solution of the N-S equations tends to the viscous shock with a shift, which is partially determined by the periodic oscillations. In other words, the viscous shock is nonlinearly stable even though the perturbation oscillates at the far fields. The key point is to construct a suitable ansatz $ (\tilde{v},\tilde{u}) $, which carries the same oscillations of the solution $ (v,u) $ at the far fields, so that the difference $ (v-\tilde{v},u-\tilde{u}) $ belongs to the $ H^2(R) $ space for all $ t\geq 0. $

Boundary Layer Solution of the Boltzmann Equation for Diffusive Reflection Boundary Conditions in Half-space

We study steady Boltzmann equation in half-space, which arises in the Knudsen boundary layer problem, with diffusive reflection boundary conditions. Under certain admissible conditions and the source term decaying exponentially, we establish the existence of boundary layer solution for both linear and nonlinear Boltzmann equation in half-space with diffusive reflection boundary condition in $L^\infty_{x,v}$ when the far-field Mach number of the Maxwellian is zero. The continuity and the spacial decay of the solution are obtained. The uniqueness is established under some constraint conditions.

Asymptotic stability of planar rarefaction waves for 3-d isentropic Navier-Stokes equations under periodic perturbations

We study the asymptotic stability of a planar rarefaction wave (in the $ x_1 $- direction) for the 3-d isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, where the initial perturbation is periodic on the torus $ \mathbb{T}^3 $ with zero average. To solve this Cauchy problem in which the initial data is periodic with respect to only $ x_2 $ and $ x_3 $ but not to $ x_1, $ we construct a suitable ansatz carrying the oscillations of the solution in the $ x_1 $- direction, but remaining to be periodic in the transverse $ x_2 $- and $ x_3 $- directions. In such a way, the difference between the ansatz and the solution can be integrable on the region $ \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}^2, $ which allows us to utilize the energy method with the aid of a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality on $ \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}^2 $ to prove the result.

Hilbert expansion of the Boltzmann equation with specular boundary condition in half-space

Boundary effects play an important role in the study of hydrodynamic limits in the Boltzmann theory. Based on a systematic derivation and study of the viscous layer equations and the $L^2$ to $L^\infty$ framework, we establish the validity of the Hilbert expansion for the Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary conditions, which leads to derivations of compressible Euler equations and acoustic equations.

The uniqueness, continuity and exponential decay of the solution are obtained, and such estimates are important to prove the Hilbert expansion of Boltzmann equation for half-space problem with specular boundary condition.
