Infinite prime sumsets in structured and $U^k(Φ)$-uniform sets

By introducing new ergodic-theoretic techniques in nilsystems, we determine which infinite sumset configurations occur in $U^k(Φ)$-uniform and Nil-Bohr sets. To be more precise, our first result associates the degree $k$ of a $U^k(Φ)$-uniform set with the variety of sumsets it contains, solving a conjecture of Kra, Moreira, Richter and Robertson. Restricting to Nil-Bohr sets we show the existence of infinite sumsets with summands in the shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$. As a consequence, we show that for any real polynomial $Q(n)$ with leading irrational coefficient of degree $k$, and any natural numbers $\ell_1, \cdots, \ell_k$ there is an infinite set $P\subset \mathbb{P}$ such that \begin{equation*} Q\Big(\sum_{p \in I} p\Big) \in U \pmod 1 \quad \text{ for all } I \subset P , |I| = \ell_1, \ldots, \ell_k. \end{equation*}

Quantum Chaos and Quantum Optimal Transport

Chaos in classical systems can be characterized by Lyapunov exponents that measure the exponential divergence of nearby trajectories, but directly extending this framework to quantum mechanics has been a persistent challenge. The wavelike nature of quantum states and the non-commutative geometry of quantum phase space obstruct a straightforward generalization of classical chaos theory. Here we develop a rigorous approach to quantum chaos by leveraging quantum optimal transport theory, which provides the missing geometric foundation for measuring distances between extended quantum distributions. We define quantum Lyapunov exponents that naturally avoid divergences encountered when naïvely generalizing classical exponents, and show that in the semiclassical limit they recover the classical global expansion rate, and hence the usual maximal Lyapunov exponent when they coincide. Our framework provides a tight connection between the divergence of classical trajectories and semiclassical phase space evolution, and additionally clarifies the role of out-of-time-order correlators as diagnostics of quantum chaos. These results establish quantum optimal transport as a unifying mathematical foundation for quantum chaos theory, providing new tools to characterize dynamical behavior across the full range of quantum dynamics from simple few-body models to complex many-body systems.

Potential Estimates and Hodge Systems with $L^1$ data on compact manifolds

In this paper we establish optimal Lorentz estimates for the Riesz potentials acting on closed or co-closed $k$-forms of finite mass on a smooth, compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$: For $α\in (0,n)$ and $k=1,\ldots,n-1$, there exists a constant $C>0$ such that \begin{align*} \| \mathcal{I}_{α,k} F \|_{L^{n/(n-α),1}(Λ^k)} \leq C \| F\|_{L^1(Λ^k)} \end{align*} for all $k$-forms $F \in L^1(Λ^k)$ orthogonal to the space of harmonic $k$-forms and satisfying $\mathrm{d} F=0$ or $\mathrm{d}^* F=0$. We show how this inequality implies analogous Lorentz bounds for solutions of the $k$-form Poisson equation and for the Hodge system with data having finite mass. These results include as a special case the div--curl system on the $3$-dimensional torus, where we answer an open question originally posed by J. Bourgain and H. Brezis.

On growth rates of infinite and finite sumsets

We study growth rates of infinite and finite sumset patterns in sets of positive density. In the infinite setting, we show that no such rate exists, answering a question of Kra, Moreira, Ritcher, and Robertson. Namely, for any proposed growth rate $\mathcal{H}: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ tending to infinity, we construct a set $A$ of lower density $1$ such that whenever $B,C \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ are infinite and $B+C \subseteq A$ we have the minimum of $|B\cap [N]|$ and $|C \cap [N]|$ is less than $\mathcal{H}(N)$ for infinitely many $N$. In the finitary setting, we prove that for all $δ\in (0,1)$, for all sufficiently large $N$, for all subsets $A$ of $\{1,\dots,N\}$ of proportion $δ$, one can always find sumset patterns $B+C\subseteq A$ with $|B|$ and $|C|$ of order $\log N$, partially resolving a conjecture of Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson. Moreover, we generalize our second result to the case of the $k$-fold sum $B_1 + B_2 + \ldots + B_k \subseteq A$.

Structure and Spectrum of Nonergodic Nilsystems

We study Host-Kra factors and the spectral type of nilsystems, without assuming ergodicity. In the ergodic case, it is known that the spectral type splits into a discrete component and a Lebesgue component of infinite multiplicity. Our main result extends this decomposition to nonergodic nilsystems.

Infinite linear patterns in sets of positive density

In this article we describe all possible infinite linear configurations that can be found in a shift of any set of positive upper Banach density. This simultaneously generalizes Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions and the recent density finite sums theorem of Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson.

Exponential Localization of Spatial Random Permutations in One Dimension

We consider a class of random permutations of the interval $[-n,n]$, in which points are typically displaced a distance $O(W)$. We show the cycles are localized on the scale $W^3$, with an exponentially decaying tail bound. Analogous to eigenfunctions of one dimensional random band matrices, the cycles are conjectured to be localized to the scale $W^2.$

Local limit theorems for random isometries of the plane

We consider a random walk $(Y_N)_{N\geq 0}$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ generated by successively applying independent random isometries, drawn from a fixed measure $μ$, to the point $0$. When the support of $μ$ is finite and includes an irrational rotation satisfying a Diophantine condition, we establish a local central limit theorem (LCLT) for $Y_N$ down to super-polynomially small scales. When $μ$ includes rotations satisfying a further algebraic condition, we prove that a LCLT holds down to the scale $\exp(-cN^{1/3}/(\log N)^2)$. Due to group-theoretic obstructions, this is sharp for symmetric $μ$, up to the $\log$ factor. Lastly for a special class of asymmetric $μ$, we obtain an LCLT down to the much finer scale $\exp(-cN^{1/2})$. The proofs relate the fine-scale distribution of $Y_N$ to a question about the values of integer polynomials on the unit circle.

Multiple Polynomial Recurrence in Weyl Systems

In this work we give a full characterization of sets of multiple polynomial recurrence in Weyl systems, which are ergodic unipotent affine transformations on products of tori and finite abelian groups. In particular, we show that measurable and topological recurrence in Weyl systems coincide. Our analysis also yields a structure theorem for polynomial multicorrelation sequences in Weyl systems. These results stem from an in-depth study of the Weyl complexity of a set of polynomials and the introduction of a new concept: the \textit{Weyl polynomials} generated by a set of polynomials.

The threshold for quantum-classical correspondence is $D \sim \hbar^{\frac43}$

In chaotic quantum systems, an initially localized quantum state can deviate strongly from the corresponding classical phase-space distribution after the Ehrenfest time $t_{\mathrm{E}} \sim \log(\hbar^{-1})$, even in the limit $\hbar \to 0$. Decoherence by the environment is often invoked to explain the persistence of the quantum-classical correspondence at longer timescales. Recent rigorous results for Lindblad dynamics with phase-space diffusion strength $D$ show that quantum and classical evolutions remain close for times that are exponentially longer than the Ehrenfest time whenever $D \gg \hbar^{\frac43}$, in units set by the classical Hamiltonian. At the same time, some heuristic arguments have suggested the weaker condition $D \gg \hbar^{2}$ always suffices. Here we construct an explicit Lindbladian that demonstrates that the scaling $D \sim \hbar^{\frac43}$ is indeed the threshold for quantum-classical correspondence beyond the Ehrenfest time. Our example uses a smooth time-dependent Hamiltonian and linear Lindblad operators generating homogeneous isotropic diffusion. It exhibits an $\hbar$-independent quantum-classical discrepancy at the Ehrenfest time whenever $D \ll \hbar^{\frac43}$, even for $\hbar$-independent "macroscopic" smooth observables.

Self-consistent equations and quantum diffusion for the Anderson model

We consider the Anderson tight-binding model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$, with Gaussian noise and at low disorder $λ>0$. We derive a diffusive scaling limit for the entries of the resolvent $R(z)$ at imaginary part $\operatorname*{Im} z\simλ^{2+κ_d}$, $κ_d>0$, with high probability. As consequences, we establish quantum diffusion (in a time-averaged sense) for the Schrödinger propagator at the longest timescale known to date and improve the best available lower bounds on the localization length of eigenfunctions. Our results for $d=2$ are the first quantum diffusion results for the Anderson model on $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The proof avoids the use of diagrammatic expansions and instead proceeds by analyzing certain self-consistent equations for $R(z)$. This is facilitated by new estimates for $\|R(z)\|_{\ell^p\rightarrow \ell^q}$ that control the recollisions.

Lecture notes on Quantum Diffusion and Random Matrix Theory

In joint work with Adam Black and Reuben Drogin, we develop a new approach to understanding the diffusive limit of the random Schrodinger equation based on ideas taken from random matrix theory. These lecture notes present the main ideas from this work in a self-contained and simplified presentation. The lectures were given at the summer school "PDE and Probability" at Sorbonne Université from June 16-20, 2025.

On density analogs of Hindman's finite sums theorem

For any set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper Banach density, we show the existence of an infinite set $B$ and sequences $(t_k)_{k\in \mathbb{N}}, (s_k)_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ of natural numbers such that $\left\{ \sum_{n \in F}n : F \subset B + s_k, 1 \leq |F| \leq k \right\}\subset A-t_k$, for every $k\in \mathbb{N}$. This strengthens the density finite sums theorem of Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson. We further show, given such a set $A$, the existence of an infinite set $B$ and a sequence $(t_k)_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ of natural numbers such that $\left\{ \sum_{n \in F}n : F \subset B, |F| = k \right\}\subset A-t_k$, for every $k\in \mathbb{N}$. As a corollary, we obtain a sequence $(B_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of infinite sets of natural numbers such that $B_1+\cdots +B_k \subset A$, for every $k\in \mathbb{N}$. We also establish the optimality of our main theorems by providing counterexamples to potential further generalizations, and thereby addressing questions of the aforementioned authors in the context of density analogs to Hindman's finite sums theorem.

An Egorov Theorem for Wasserstein Distances

We prove a new version of Egorov's theorem formulated in the Schrödinger picture of quantum mechanics, using the $p$-Wasserstein metric applied to the Husimi functions of quantum states. The special case $p=1$ corresponds to a "low-regularity" Egorov theorem, while larger values $p>1$ yield progressively stronger estimates. As a byproduct of our analysis, we prove an optimal transport inequality analogous to a result of Golse and Paul in the context of mean-field many-body quantum mechanics.

Diffusivity of the Lorentz mirror walk in high dimensions

In the Lorentz mirror walk in dimension $d\geq 2$, mirrors are randomly placed on the vertices of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ at density $p\in[0,1]$. A light ray is then shot from the origin and deflected through the various mirrors in space. The object of study is the random trajectory obtained in this way, and it is of upmost interest to determine whether these trajectories are localized (finite) or delocalized (infinite). A folklore conjecture states that for $d=2$ these trajectories are finite for any density $p>0$, while in dimensions $d\geq 3$ and for $p>0$ small enough some trajectories are infinite. In this paper we prove that for all dimensions $d\geq 4$ and any small density $p$, the trajectories behave diffusively at all polynomial time scales $t\approx p^{-M}$ with $M>1$, and in particular, they do not close by this time.

Ehrenfest's theorem beyond the Ehrenfest time

In closed quantum systems, wavepackets can spread exponentially in time due to chaos, forming long-range superpositions in just seconds for ordinary macroscopic systems. A weakly coupled environment is conjectured to decohere the system and restore the quantum-classical correspondence while necessarily introducing diffusive noise -- but at what coupling strength, and under which conditions? For Markovian open systems with Hamiltonians of the form $H = p^2/2m+V(x)$ and Hermitian linear Lindblad operators, we prove the quantum and classical evolutions are close whenever the strength of the environment-induced diffusion satisfies $D \gg (\hbar/s_H)^{4/3} D_H$, where $s_H$ and $D_H$ are characteristic action and diffusion scales that we define precisely using the classical Hamiltonian $H$. The bound applies for all observables and for times exponentially longer than the Ehrenfest timescale, which is when the correspondence can break down in closed systems. The strength of the diffusive noise can vanish in the classical limit to give the appearance of reversible dynamics. The $4/3$ exponent may be optimal, suggested by heuristic arguments and prior numerical evidence. Based on our bound, we give an efficient classical algorithm for simulating quantum Lindblad dynamics, which becomes provably accurate when the strength of environmental coupling exceeds the above threshold.

Classical correspondence beyond the Ehrenfest time for open quantum systems with general Lindbladians

Quantum and classical systems evolving under the same formal Hamiltonian $H$ may dramatically differ after the Ehrenfest timescale $t_E \sim \log(\hbar^{-1})$, even as $\hbar \to 0$. Coupling the system to a Markovian environment results in a Lindblad equation for the quantum evolution. Its classical counterpart is given by the Fokker-Planck equation on phase space, which describes Hamiltonian flow with friction and diffusive noise. The quantum and classical evolutions may be compared via the Wigner-Weyl representation. Due to decoherence, they are conjectured to match closely for times far beyond the Ehrenfest timescale as $\hbar \to 0$. We prove a version of this correspondence, bounding the error between the quantum and classical evolutions for any sufficiently regular Hamiltonian $H(x,p)$ and Lindblad functions $L_k(x,p)$. The error is small when the strength of the diffusion $D$ associated to the Lindblad functions satisfies $D \gg \hbar^{4/3}$, which allows vanishing noise in the classical limit. Our method uses a time-dependent semiclassical mixture of variably squeezed Gaussian states. The states evolve according to a local harmonic approximation to the Lindblad dynamics. Both the exact quantum trajectory and its classical counterpart can be expressed as perturbations of this semiclassical mixture, with the errors bounded using Duhamel's principle. We present heuristic arguments suggesting the $4/3$ exponent is optimal and defines a boundary in the sense that asymptotically weaker diffusion permits a breakdown of quantum-classical correspondence at the Ehrenfest timescale. In a shorter companion paper, we treat the special case of Hamiltonians that decompose into kinetic and potential energy with linear Lindblad operators, with explicit bounds that can be applied directly to physical systems.
