Minimum of $η/s$ and the phase transition of the Linear Sigma Model in the large-N limit

We reexamine the possibility of employing the viscosity over entropy density ratio as a diagnostic tool to identify a phase transition in hadron physics to the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma and other circumstances where direct measurement of the order parameter or the free energy may be difficult. It has been conjectured that the minimum of eta/s does indeed occur at the phase transition. We now make a careful assessment in a controled theoretical framework, the Linear Sigma Model at large-N, and indeed find that the minimum of eta/s occurs near the second order phase transition of the model due to the rapid variation of the order parameter (here the sigma vacuum expectation value) at a temperature slightly smaller than the critical one.

Probing the infrared quark mass from highly excited baryons

We argue that three-quark excited states naturally group into quartets, split into two parity doublets, and that the mass splittings between these parity partners decrease higher up in the baryon spectrum. This decreasing mass difference can be used to probe the running quark mass in the mid-infrared power-law regime. A measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta* resonances should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy. We test this concept with the first computation of excited high-j baryon masses in a chirally invariant quark model.

Reggeon Non-Factorizability and the J=0 Fixed Pole in DVCS

We argue that deeply virtual Compton scattering will display Regge behavior nu^alpha_R(t) at high energy at fixed-t, even at high photon virtuality, not necessarily conventional scaling. A way to see this is to track the Reggeon contributions to quark-nucleon scattering and notice that the resulting Generalized Parton Distributions would have divergent behavior at the break-points. In addition, we show that the direct two-photon to quark coupling will be accessible at large $t$ where it dominates the DVCS amplitude for large energies. This contribution, the J=0 fixed-pole, should be part of the future DVCS experimental programs at Jlab or LHeC.

Excited baryons as experimental probes of the quark mass

We observe that excited hadrons provide an opportunity to probe from experiment the power-law running of the quark mass in the mid infrared, while the condition m(k)<k remains valid. A relatively clean analysis is possible for the maximum spin excitations of the Delta baryons, analogous to the yrast states in nuclei. Such states are accessible at current experimental facilities such as ELSA and Jlab.

Quark mass dependence of the pion vector form factor

We examine the quark mass dependence of the pion vector form factor, particularly the curvature (mean quartic radius). We focus our study on the consequences of assuming that the coupling constant of the rho to pions is largely independent of the quark mass while the quark mass dependence of the rho--mass is given by recent lattice data. By employing the Omnes representation we can provide a very clean estimate for a certain combination of the curvature and the square radius, whose quark mass dependence could be determined from lattice computations. This study provides an independent access to the quark mass dependence of the rho-pi-pi coupling and in this way a non-trivial check of the systematics of chiral extrapolations. We also provide an improved value for the curvature for physical values for the quark masses, namely = 0.73 +- 0.09 fm^4 or equivalently c_V=4.00\pm 0.50 GeV^{-4}.

Confinement and Green functions in Landau-gauge QCD

In a functional approach to QCD the infrared behaviour of Landau gauge Green functions is investigated. Positivity violation for, and thus confinement of, gluons is demonstrated, and the analytic structure of the gluon propagator is studied. Quark confinement is related to an infrared divergence of the quark-gluon vertex. In the latter various components are dynamically induced due to the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. As a result an infrared finite running coupling in the Yang-Mills sector is derived whereas the running coupling related to the quark-gluon vertex is infrared divergent. Based on a truncation for the quark-gluon vertex Dyson-Schwinger equation, which respects the analytically determined infrared behavior, numerical results for the coupled system of the quark propagator and vertex Dyson-Schwinger equations are presented. The resulting quark mass function as well as the vertex function show only a very weak dependence on the current quark mass in the deep infrared. From this we infer by an analysis of the quark-quark scattering kernel a linearly rising quark potential with an almost mass independent string tension in the case of broken chiral symmetry.

eta/s is critical (at phase transitions)

The viscosity over entropy density ratio, or KSS number, can help isolate the critical point in the hadron phase-diagram in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions. We argue that this quantity does have a minimum at a phase transition or crossover. Although indications from conventional non-relativistic gases point out to even a divergence in eta/s when the phase-transition is first-order, since the critical exponent is rather low, this will be more difficult to ascertain in RHIC or FAIR. The experimental data are more likely to reveal a discontinuity for a first order phase transition or a smooth minimum at a crossover.

$η/s$ and Phase Transitions

We present a calculation of eta/s for the meson gas (zero baryon number), with the viscosity computed within unitarized NLO chiral perturbation theory, and confirm the observation that eta/s decreases towards the possible phase transition to a quark-gluon plasma/liquid. The value is somewhat higher than previously estimated in LO chi PT. We also examine the case of atomic Argon gas to check the discontinuity of eta/s across a first order phase transition. Our results suggest employing this dimensionless number, sometimes called KSS number (in analogy with other ratios in fluid mechanics such as Reynolds number or Prandtl number) to pin down the phase transition and critical end point to a cross-over in strongly interacting nuclear matter between the hadron gas and quark and gluon plasma/liquid.

Local Two-Photon Couplings and the J=0 Fixed Pole in Real and Virtual Compton Scattering

The local coupling of two photons to the fundamental quark currents of a hadron gives an energy-independent contribution to the Compton amplitude proportional to the charge squared of the struck quark, a contribution which has no analog in hadron scattering reactions. We show that this local contribution has a real phase and is universal, giving the same contribution for real or virtual Compton scattering for any photon virtuality and skewness at fixed momentum transfer squared t. The t-dependence of this J=0 fixed Regge pole is parameterized by a yet unmeasured even charge-conjugation form factor of the target nucleon. The t=0 limit gives an important constraint on the dependence of the nucleon mass on the quark mass through the Weisberger relation. We discuss how this 1/x form factor can be extracted from high energy deeply virtual Compton scattering and examine predictions given by models of the H generalized parton distribution.

Parity doubling in the high baryon spectrum: near-degenerate three-quark quartets

We report on the first calculation of excited baryons with a chirally symmetric Hamiltonian, modeled after Coulomb gauge QCD (or upgraded from the Cornell meson potential model to a field theory in all of Fock-space) showing the insensitivity to chiral symmetry breaking. As has recently been understood, this leads to doubling between two hadrons of equal spin and opposite parity. As a novelty we show that three-quark, for example Delta states, group into quartets with two states of each parity, all four states having equal angular momentum J. Diagonalizing the chiral charge expressed in terms of quarks we show that the quartet is slightly split into two parity doublets by the tensor force, all splittings decreasing to zero high in the spectrum. Our specific calculation is for the family of maximum-spin excitations of the Delta baryon. We provide a model estimate of the experimental accuracy needed to establish Chiral Symmetry Restoration in the high spectrum. We suggest that a measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta resonances with an accuracy of 50 MeV should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy, and test the concept of running quark mass in the infrared.

From Euclidean to Minkowski space with the Cauchy-Riemann equations

We present an elementary method to obtain Green's functions in non-perturbative quantum field theory in Minkowski space from calculated Green's functions in Euclidean space. Since in non-perturbative field theory the analytical structure of amplitudes is many times unknown, especially in the presence of confined fields, dispersive representations suffer from systematic uncertainties. Therefore we suggest to use the Cauchy-Riemann equations, that perform the analytical continuation without assuming global information on the function in the entire complex plane, only in the region through which the equations are solved. We use as example the quark propagator in Landau gauge Quantum Chromodynamics, that is known from lattice and Dyson-Schwinger studies in Euclidean space. The drawback of the method is the instability of the Cauchy-Riemann equations to high-frequency noise, that makes difficult to achieve good accuracy. We also point out a few curiosities related to the Wick rotation.

Dynamically induced scalar quark confinement

We employ a functional approach to investigate the confinement problem in quenched Landau gauge QCD. We demonstrate analytically that a linear rising potential between massive quarks is generated by infrared singularities in the dressed quark-gluon vertex. The selfconsistent mechanism that generates these singularities is driven by the scalar Dirac amplitudes of the full vertex and the quark propagator. These can only be present when chiral symmetry is broken. We have thus uncovered a novel mechanism that directly links chiral symmetry breaking with confinement.

Coulomb gauge approach to scalar hadrons

The Coulomb gauge model, involving an effective QCD Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge, is applied to scalar hadrons. Mass predictions are presented for both conventional q-qbar meson and q-qbar-q-qbar tetra-quark states. Mixing matrix elements between these states were also computed and diagonalized to provide a reasonable description of the scalar spectrum below 2 GeV.

The quark-gluon vertex in Landau gauge QCD: Its role in dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement

The infrared behavior of the quark-gluon vertex of quenched Landau gauge QCD is studied by analyzing its Dyson-Schwinger equation. Building on previously obtained results for Green functions in the Yang-Mills sector we analytically derive the existence of power-law infrared singularities for this vertex. We establish that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking leads to the self-consistent generation of components of the quark-gluon vertex forbidden when chiral symmetry is forced to stay in the Wigner-Weyl mode. In the latter case the running strong coupling assumes an infrared fixed point. If chiral symmetry is broken, either dynamically or explicitely, the running coupling is infrared divergent. Based on a truncation for the quark-gluon vertex Dyson-Schwinger equation which respects the analytically determined infrared behavior numerical results for the coupled system of the quark propagator and vertex Dyson-Schwinger equation are presented. Enforcing chiral symmetry does lead to a Coulomb type potential. Therefore we conclude that chiral symmetry breaking and confinement are closely related. Furthermore we discuss aspects of confinement as the absence of long-range van-der-Waals forces and Casimir scaling. An examination of experimental data for quarkonia provides further evidence for the viability of the presented mechanism for quark confinement in the Landau gauge.

The status of the KSS bound and its possible violations (How perfect can a fluid be?)

In this work we briefly review the Kovtun-Son-Starinet (KSS) computation of the ratio eta/s for quantum field theories with gravitational dual and the related conjecture that it is bound from below by 1/(4 pi). We discuss the validity of the bound and the nature of its possible violations, its relevance for RHIC, its connection with phase transitions and other related issues.

Franck-Condon principle for heavy-quark hadron decays

The Franck-Condon principle governing molecular electronic transitions is utilized to study heavy-quark hadron decays. This provides a direct assessment of the wavefunction of the parent hadron if the momentum distribution of the open-flavor decay products is measured. Model-independent results include an experimental distinction between quarkonium and exotica (hybrids, tetraquarks...), an off-plane correlator signature for tetraquarks and a direct probe of the sea quark orbital wavefunction relevant in the discussion of 3S_1 or 3P_0 decay mechanisms.

Nonperturbative quark-gluon dynamics

We summarize recent results on the nonperturbative quark-gluon interaction in Landau gauge QCD. Our analytical analysis of the infrared behaviour of the quark-gluon vertex reveals infrared singularities, which lead to an infrared divergent running coupling and a linear rising quark-antiquark potential when chiral symmetry is broken. In the chirally symmetric case we find an infrared fixed point of the coupling and, correspondingly, a Coulomb potential. These findings provide a new link betwen dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and confinement.

Dynamically induced scalar quark confinement: A link between chiral symmetry breaking and confinement

Employing functional approaches the infrared behaviour of Landau gauge QCD vertex functions is investigated. Results for the ghost-gluon, three-gluon and quark-gluon vertex functions are presented. As can be analytically shown a linear rising potential between heavy quarks is generated by infrared singularities in the dressed quark-gluon vertex. The selfconsistent mechanism that generates these singularities implies the existence of scalar Dirac amplitudes of the full vertex and the quark propagator. These amplitudes can only be present when chiral symmetry is broken, either explicitly or dynamically. The corresponding relations thus constitute a novel mechanism that directly links chiral symmetry breaking with confinement.
