Holonomy in pseudo-Hermitian geometry

We study the holonomy that is associated to a sub-Riemannian structure defined on the kernel of a global contact form. This includes the holonomy of Schouten's horizontal connection as well as of the adapted connection, both canonical invariants of the structure. Under a condition on the torsion of the structure, we show that they are either equal or that the former is a codimension one normal subgroup of the latter. Furthermore, we establish a close relation to Riemannian holonomy, which yields a complete holonomy classification in the torsion-free case. For the main result we focus on the special case of pseudo-Hermitian structures and give a classification of holonomy algebras for both the Schouten and the adapted connection. Based on this, we derive a classification of symmetric sub-Riemannian structures and of of those holonomy groups that admit parallel spinors. Finally we exhibit a relation between locally symmetric sub-Riemannian contact structures and locally homogeneous Riemannian structures.

Eigenvalue estimates of the Kohn-Dirac operator on CR manifolds

In this paper, we establish a new eigenvalue estimate for the Kohn-Dirac operator on a compact CR manifold. The equality case of this estimate is characterized by the existence of a CR twistor spinor. We then classify CR manifolds carrying such spinors by showing that the Webster Ricci tensor has at most two eigenvalues. In this context, we construct several examples.

Invariant Dirac Operators, Harmonic Spinors, and Vanishing Theorems in CR Geometry

We study Kohn-Dirac operators $D_\theta$ on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds with ${\rm spin}^{\mathbb C}$ structure of weight $\ell\in{\mathbb Z}$. Certain components of $D_\theta$ are CR invariants. We also derive CR invariant twistor operators of weight $\ell$. Harmonic spinors correspond to cohomology classes of some twisted Kohn-Rossi complex. Applying a Schr\"odinger-Lichnerowicz-type formula, we prove vanishing theorems for harmonic spinors and (twisted) Kohn-Rossi groups. We also derive obstructions to positive Webster curvature.

About Twistor Spinors with Zero in Lorentzian Geometry

We describe the local conformal geometry of a Lorentzian spin manifold $(M,g)$ admitting a twistor spinor $ϕ$ with zero. Moreover, we describe the shape of the zero set of $ϕ$. If $ϕ$ has isolated zeros then the metric $g$ is locally conformally equivalent to a static monopole. In the other case the zero set consists of null geodesic(s) and $g$ is locally conformally equivalent to a Brinkmann metric. Our arguments utilise tractor calculus in an essential way. The Dirac current of $ϕ$, which is a conformal Killing vector field, plays an important role for our discussion as well.

A class of compact Poincare-Einstein manifolds: properties and construction

We develop a geometric and explicit construction principle that generates classes of Poincare-Einstein manifolds, and more generally almost Einstein manifolds. Almost Einstein manifolds satisfy a generalisation of the Einstein condition; they are Einstein on an open dense subspace and, in general, have a conformal scale singularity set that is a conformal infinity for the Einstein metric. In particular, the construction may be applied to yield families of compact Poincare-Einstein manifolds, as well as classes of almost Einstein manifolds that are compact without boundary. We obtain classification results which show that the construction essentially exhausts a class of almost Einstein (and Poincare-Einstein) manifold. We develop the general theory of fixed conformal structures admitting multiple compatible almost Einstein structures. We also show that, in a class of cases, these are canonically related to a family of constant mean curvature totally umbillic embedded hypersurfaces.

A sub-product construction of Poincare-Einstein metrics

Given any two Einstein (pseudo-)metrics, with scalar curvatures suitably related, we give an explicit construction of a Poincaré-Einstein (pseudo-)metric with conformal infinity the conformal class of the product of the initial metrics. We show that these metrics are equivalent to ambient metrics for the given conformal structure. The ambient metrics have holonomy that agrees with the conformal holonomy. In the generic case the ambient metric arises directly as a product of the metric cones over the original Einstein spaces. In general the conformal infinity of the Poincare metrics we construct is not Einstein, and so this describes a class of non-conformally Einstein metrics for which the (Fefferman-Graham) obstruction tensor vanishes.

A remark on conformal $\SU(p,q)$-holonomy

If the conformal holonomy group $Hol(\mathcal{T})$ of a simply connected space with conformal structure of signature $(2p-1,2q-1)$ is reduced to $\U(p,q)$ then the conformal holonomy is already contained in the special unitary group $\SU(p,q)$. We present two different proofs of this statement, one using conformal tractor calculus and an alternative proof using Sparling's characterisation of Fefferman metrics.

Twistor spinors with zero on Lorentzian 5-space

We present in this paper a $C^1$-metric on an open neighbourhood of the origin in $\RR^{5}$. The metric is of Lorentzian signature $(1,4)$ and admits a solution to the twistor equation for spinors with a unique isolated zero at the origin. The metric is not conformally flat in any neighbourhood of the origin. The construction is based on the Eguchi-Hanson metric with parallel spinors on Riemannian 4-space.

About complex structures in conformal tractor calculus

The aim of this paper is to describe the geometry of conformal structures in Lorentzian signature, which admit a lightlike conformal Killing vector field whose corresponding adjoint tractor acts as complex structure on the standard tractor bundle of conformal geometry. Key to the treatment of this problem is CR-geometry and the Fefferman construction. In fact, we will consider here partially integrable CR-structures and a slightly generalised Fefferman construction for these, which we call the $\ell$-Fefferman construction. We show that a certain class of $\ell$-Fefferman metrics on partially integrable CR-spaces provides all solutions to our problem concerning the complex structures.

On pseudo-Hermitian Einstein spaces

We describe and construct here pseudo-Hermitian structures $θ$ without torsion (i.e. with transversal symmetry) whose Webster-Ricci curvature tensor is a constant multiple of the exterior differential $dθ$. We call these structures pseudo-Hermitian Einstein and our result states that they all can be derived locally from K{ä}hler-Einstein metrics. Moreover, we discuss the corresponding Fefferman metrics of the pseudo-Hermitian Einstein structures. These Fefferman metrics are never Einstein, but they are locally always conformally Einstein.

Normal Conformal Killing Forms

We introduce in this paper normal twistor equations for differential forms and study their solutions, the so-called normal conformal Killing forms. The twistor equations arise naturally from the canonical normal Cartan connection of conformal geometry. Reductions of its holonomy are related to solutions of the normal twistor equations. The case of decomposable normal conformal holonomy representations is discussed. A typical example with an irreducible holonomy representation are the so-called Fefferman spaces. We also apply our results to describe the geometry of solutions with conformal Killing spinors on Lorentzian spin manifolds.

Conformal holonomy of bi-invariant metrics

We discuss in this paper the conformal geometry of bi-invariant metrics on compact semisimple Lie groups. For this purpose we develop a conformal Cartan calculus adapted to this problem. In particular, we derive an explicit formula for the holonomy algebra of the normal conformal Cartan connection of a bi-invariant metric. As an example, we apply this calculus to the group $\SO(4)$. Its conformal holonomy group is calculated to be $\SO(7)$.

The twistor equation in Lorentzian spin geometry

In this paper we discuss the twistor equation in Lorentzian spin geometry. In particular, we explain the local conformal structure of Lorentzian manifolds, which admit twistor spinors inducing lightlike Dirac currents. Furthermore, we derive all local geometries with singularity free twistor spinors that occur up to dimension 7.

Imaginary Killing Spinors in Lorenztian Geometry

We study the geometric structure of Lorentzian spin manifolds, which admit imaginary Killing spinors. The discussion is based on the cone construction and a normal form classification of skew-adjoint operators in signature $(2,n-2)$. Derived geometries include Brinkmann spaces, Lorentzian Einstein-Sasaki spaces and certain warped product structures. Exceptional cases with decomposable holonomy of the cone are possible.

Twistorial constructions of spacelike surfaces in Lorentzian 4-manifolds

We investigate the twistor space and the Grassmannian fibre bundle of a Lorentzian 4-space with natural almost optical structures and its induced CR-structures. The twistor spaces of the Lorentzian space forms $\R^4_1, \Di{S}^4_1$ and $\Di{H}^4_1$ are explicitly discussed. The given twistor construction is applied to surface theory in Lorentzian 4-spaces. Immersed spacelike surfaces in a Lorentzian 4-space with special geometric properties like semi-umbilic surfaces and surfaces that have mean curvature of vanishing lengths correspond to holomorphic curves in the Lorentzian twistor space. For the Lorentzian space forms $\R^4_1, \Di{S}^4_1$ and $\Di{H}^4_1$ those surfaces are explicitly constructed and classified.
