A posteriori analysis for a mixed formulation of the Stokes spectral problem

In two and three dimensions, we design and analyze a posteriori error estimators for the mixed Stokes eigenvalue problem. The unknowns on this mixed formulation are the pseudotress, velocity and pressure. With a lowest order mixed finite element scheme, together with a postprocressing technique, we prove that the proposed estimator is reliable and efficient. We illustrate the results with several numerical tests in two and three dimensions in order to assess the performance of the estimator.

VEM allowing small edges for the acoustic problem

In this paper we propose and analyze a virtual element method to approximate the natural frequencies of the acoustic eigenvalue problem with polygonal meshes that allow the presence of small edges. With the aid of a suitable seminorm that depends on the stabilization of the small edges method, we prove convergence and error estimates for the eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of the problem, supporting our analysis on the compact operators theory. We report some numerical tests that allows us to assess the performance of the method and the accuracy on the approximation.

A priori and a posteriori error analysis for a VEM discretization of the convection-diffusion eigenvalue problem

In this paper we propose and analyze a virtual element method for the two dimensional non-symmetric diffusion-convection eigenvalue problem in order to derive a priori and a posteriori error estimates. Under the classic assumptions of the meshes, and with the aid of the classic theory of compact operators, we prove error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Also, we develop an a posteriori error estimator which, in one hand, results to be reliable and on the other, with standard bubble functions arguments, also results to be efficient. We test our method on domains where the complex eigenfunctions are not sufficiently regular, in order to assess the performance of the estimator that we compare with the uniform refinement given by the a priori analysis

A virtual element method for the elasticity problem allowing small edges

In this paper we analyze a virtual element method for the two dimensional elasticity problem allowing small edges. With this approach, the classic assumptions on the geometrical features of the polygonal meshes can be relaxed. In particular, we consider only star-shaped polygons for the meshes. Suitable error estimates are presented, where a rigorous analysis on the influence of the Lamé constants in each estimate is presented. We report numerical tests to assess the performance of the method.

A virtual element method for the elasticity spectral problem allowing small edges

In this paper we analyze a virtual element method for the two dimensional elasticity spectral problem allowing small edges. Under this approach, and with the aid of the theory of compact operators, we prove convergence of the proposed VEM and error estimates, where the influence of the Lamé constants is presented. We present a series of numerical tests to assess the performance of the method where we analyze the effects of the Poisson ratio on the computation of the order of convergence, together with the effects of the stabilization term on the arising of spurious eigenvalues.

VEM discretization allowing small edges for the reaction-convection-diffusion equation: source and spectral problems

In this paper we analyze a lowest order virtual element method for the load classic reaction-convection-diffusion problem and the convection-diffusion spectral problem, where the assumptions on the polygonal meshes allow to consider small edges for the polygons. Under well defined seminorms depending on a suitable stabilization for this geometrical approach, we derive the well posedness of the numerical scheme and error estimates for the load problem, whereas for the spectral problem we derive convergence and error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. We report numerical tests to assess the performance of the small edges on our numerical method for both problems under consideration.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods for the acoustic vibration problem

In two and three dimension we analyze discontinuous Galerkin methods for the acoustic problem. The acoustic fluid that we consider on this paper is inviscid, leading to a linear eigenvalue problem. The acoustic problem is written, in first place, in terms of the displacement. Under the approach of the non-compact operators theory, we prove convergence and error estimates for the method when the displacement formulation is considered. We analyze the influence of the stabilization parameter on the computation of the spectrum, where spurious eigenmodes arise when this parameter is not correctly chosen. Alternatively we present the formulation depending only on the pressure, comparing the performance of the DG methods with the pure displacement formulation. Computationally, we study the influence of the stabilization parameter on the arising of spurious eigenvalues when the spectrum is computed. Also, we report tests in two and three dimensions where convergence rates are reported, together with a comparison between the displacement and pressure formulations for the proposed DG methods.

VEM approximation for the Stokes eigenvalue problem: a priori and a posteriori error analysis

The present paper proposes an inf-sup stable divergence free virtual element method and associated a priori, and a posteriori error analysis to approximate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Stokes spectral problem in one shot. For the a priori analysis, we take advantage of the compactness of the solution operator to prove convergence of the eigenfunctions and double order convergence of eigenvalues. Additionally we also propose an a posteriori estimator of residual type, which we prove is reliable and efficient, in order to perform adaptive refinements that allow to recover the optimal order of convergence for non smooth eigenfunctions. A set of representative numerical examples investigates such theoretical results.

Finite element analysis for the Navier-Lamé eigenvalue problem

The present paper introduces the analysis of the eigenvalue problem for the elasticity equations when the so called Navier-Lamé system is considered. Such a system introduces the displacement, rotation and pressure of some linear and elastic structure. The analysis of the spectral problem is based in the compact operators theory. A finite element method based in polynomials of degree $k\geq 1$ are considered in order to approximate the eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of the system. Convergence and error estimate are presented. An a posteriori error analysis is performed, where the reliability and efficiency of the proposed estimator is proved. We end this contribution reporting a series of numerical tests in order to assess the performance of the proposed numerical method, for the a priori and a posteriori estimates.

An Optimal Control Problem for the Navier--Stokes Equations with Point Sources

We analyze, in two dimensions, an optimal control problem for the Navier--Stokes equations where the control variable corresponds to the amplitude of forces modeled as point sources; control constraints are also considered. This particular setting leads to solutions to the state equation exhibiting reduced regularity properties. We operate under the framework of Muckenhoupt weights, Muckenhoupt-weighted Sobolev spaces, and the corresponding weighted norm inequalities and derive the existence of optimal solutions and first and, necessary and sufficient, second order optimality conditions.

A posteriori virtual element method for the acoustic vibration problem

In two dimensions, we propose and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for the acoustic spectral problem based on the virtual element method in $\H(÷;Ω)$. Introducing an auxiliary unknown, we use the fact that the primal formulation of the acoustic problem is equivalent to a mixed formulation, in order to prove a superconvergence result, necessary to despise high order terms. Under the virtual element approach, we prove that our local indicator is reliable and globally efficient in the $Ł^2$-norm. We provide numerical results to assess the performance of the proposed error estimator.

Error estimates for a vorticity-based velocity-stress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem

The aim of this paper is to analyze a mixed formulation for the two dimensional Stokes eigenvalue problem where the unknowns are the stress and the velocity, whereas the pressure can be recovered with a simple postprocess of the stress. The stress tensor is written in terms of the vorticity of the fluid, leading to an alternative mixed formulation that incorporates this physical feature. We propose a mixed numerical method where the stress is approximated with suitable Nédelec finite elements, whereas the velocity is approximated with piecewise polynomials of degree $k\geq 0$. With the aid of the compact operators theory we derive convergence of the method and spectral correctness. Moreover, we propose a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for our spectral problem. We report numerical tests in different domains, computing the spectrum and convergence orders, together with a computational analysis for the proposed estimator. In addition, we use the corresponding error estimator to drive an adaptive scheme, and we report the results of a numerical test, that allow us to assess the performance of this approach.

A posteriori analysis for a mixed FEM discretization of the linear elasticity spectral problem

In this paper we analyze a posteriori error estimates for a mixed formulation of the linear elasticity eigenvalue problem. A posteriori estimators for the nearly and perfectly compressible elasticity spectral problems are proposed. With a post-process argument, we are able to prove reliability and efficiency for the proposed estimators. The numerical method is based in Raviart-Thomas elements to approximate the pseudostress and piecewise polynomials for the displacement. We illustrate our results with numerical tests.

Displacement-pseudostress formulation for the linear elasticity spectral problem

In this paper we analyze a mixed displacement-pseudostress formulation for the elasticity eigenvalue problem. We propose a finite element method to approximate the pseudostress tensor with Raviart-Thomas elements and the displacement with piecewise polynomials. With the aid of the classic theory for compact operators, we prove that our method is convergent and does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain error estimates for the proposed method. Finally, we report some numerical tests supporting the theoretical results.

Mixed methods for the velocity-pressure-pseudostress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem

In two and three dimensional domains, we analyze mixed finite element methods for a velocity-pressure-pseudostress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem. The methods consist in two schemes: the velocity and pressure are approximated with piecewise polynomial and for the pseudostress we consider two classic families of finite elements for $\mathrm{H}(\mathop{\mathrm{div}})$ spaces: the Raviart-Thomas and the Brezzi-Douglas Marini elements. With the aid of the classic spectral theory for compact operators, we prove that our method does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain convergence and error estimates for the proposed methods. In order to assess the performance of the schemes, we report numerical results to compare the accuracy and robustness between both numerical schemes.

Analysis of an abstract mixed formulation for viscoelastic problems

This study provides an abstract framework to analyze mixed formulations in viscoelasticity, in the classic saddle point form. Standard hypothesis for mixed methods are adapted to the Volterra type equations in order to obtain stability of the proposed problem. Error estimates are derived for suitable finite element spaces. We apply the developed theory to a bending moment formulation for a linear viscoelastic Timoshenko beam and for the Laplace operator with memory terms. For both problems we report numerical results to asses the performance of the methods.

A mixed parameter formulation with applications to linear viscoelasticity

In this work we propose and analyze an abstract parameter dependent model written as a mixed variational formulation based on Volterra integrals of second kind. For the analysis, we consider a suitable adaptation to the classic mixed theory in the Volterra equations setting, and prove the well posedness of the resulting mixed viscoelastic formulation. Error estimates are derived, using the available results for Volterra equations, where all the estimates are independent of the perturbation parameter. We consider an application of the developed theory in a viscoelastic Timoshenko beam, and report numerical experiments in order to assess the independence of the perturbation parameter.

A priori error analysis for a mixed VEM discretization of the spectral problem for the Laplacian operator

The aim of the present work is to derive a error estimates for the Laplace eigenvalue problem in mixed form, by means of a virtual element method. With the aid of the theory for non-compact operators, we prove that the proposed method is spurious free and convergent. We prove optimal order error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we report numerical tests to confirm the theoretical results together with a rigorous computational analysis of the effects of the stabilization in the computation of the spectrum.
