A Solvable Model of Flat Space Holography

We propose an explicit realization of flat space holography in two dimensions where both sides of the duality are independently defined and the boundary theory is completely solvable. In the bulk, we define a novel $\mathcal{N}=1$ flat space supergravity theory and exactly compute the full topological expansion of its Euclidean partition function with an arbitrary number of boundaries. On the boundary, we consider a double scaled Hermitian random matrix model with Gaussian potential and use the loop equations to show it independently reproduces the bulk partition function to all orders in the topological expansion. The non-perturbative completion of the supergravity theory provided by the solvable Gaussian matrix model allows for the exact, and in many cases analytic, computation of observables in flat space quantum gravity.

A Matrix Model for Flat Space Quantum Gravity

We take a step towards the non-perturbative description of a two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theory which has a vanishing cosmological constant and contains black holes. This is done in terms of a double-scaled Hermitian random matrix model which non-perturbatively computes the partition function for the asymptotic Bondi Hamiltonian. To arrive at this connection we first construct the gauge-invariant asymptotic phase space of the theory and determine the relevant asymptotic boundary conditions, compute the classical S-matrix and, finally, shed light on the interpretation of the Euclidean path integral defined in previous works. We then construct a matrix model that matches the topological expansion of the latter, to all orders. This allows us to compute the fine-grained Bondi spectrum and other late time observables and to construct asymptotic Hilbert spaces. We further study aspects of the semi-classical dynamics of the finite cut-off theory coupled to probe matter and find evidence of maximally chaotic behavior in out-of-time-order correlators. We conclude with a strategy for constructing the non-perturbative S-matrix for our model coupled to probe matter and comment on the treatment of black holes in celestial holography.

A Celestial Matrix Model

We construct a Hermitian random matrix model that provides a stable non-perturbative completion of Cangemi-Jackiw (CJ) gravity, a two-dimensional theory of flat spacetimes. The matrix model reproduces, to all orders in the topological expansion, the Euclidean partition function of CJ gravity with an arbitrary number of boundaries. The non-perturbative completion enables the exact computation of observables in flat space quantum gravity which we use to explicitly characterize the Bondi Hamiltonian spectrum. We discuss the implications of our results for the flat space S-matrix and black holes.

Phase transitions for deformations of JT supergravity and matrix models

We analyze deformations of $\mathcal{N}=1$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity by adding a gas of defects, equivalent to changing the dilaton potential. We compute the Euclidean partition function in a topological expansion and find that it matches the perturbative expansion of a random matrix model to all orders. The matrix model implements an average over the Hamiltonian of a dual holographic description and provides a stable non-perturbative completion of these theories of $\mathcal{N}=1$ dilaton-supergravity. For some range of deformations, the supergravity spectral density becomes negative, yielding an ill-defined topological expansion. To solve this problem, we use the matrix model description and show the negative spectrum is resolved via a phase transition analogous to the Gross-Witten-Wadia transition. The matrix model contains a rich and novel phase structure that we explore in detail, using both perturbative and non-perturbative techniques.

A JT supergravity as a double-cut matrix model

We study a Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity theory, defined as an Euclidean path integral over orientable supermanifolds with constant negative curvature, that was argued by Stanford and Witten to be captured by a random matrix model in the $\boldsymbol{\beta}{=}2$ Dyson-Wigner class. We show that the theory is a double-cut matrix model tuned to a critical point where the two cuts coalesce. Our formulation is fully non-perturbative and manifestly stable, providing for explicit unambiguous computation of observables beyond the perturbative recursion relations derivable from loop equations. Our construction shows that this JT supergravity theory may be regarded as a particular combination of certain type 0B minimal string theories, and is hence a natural counterpart to another family of JT supergravity theories recently shown to be built from type 0A minimal strings. We conjecture that certain other JT supergravities can be similarly defined in terms of double-cut matrix models.

$T\bar{T}$ deformation of random matrices

We define and study the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a random matrix model, showing a consistent definition requires the inclusion of both the perturbative and non-perturbative solutions to the flow equation. The deformed model is well defined for arbitrary values of the coupling, exhibiting a phase transition for the critical value in which the spectrum complexifies. The transition is between a single and a double-cut phase, typically third order and in the same universality class as the Gross-Witten transition in lattice gauge theory. The $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a double scaled model is more subtle and complicated, and we are not able to give a compelling definition, although we discuss obstacles and possible alternatives. Preliminary comparisons with finite cut-off Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity are presented.

Solving Puzzles in Deformed JT Gravity: Phase Transitions and Non-Perturbative Effects

Recent work has shown that certain deformations of the scalar potential in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity can be written as double-scaled matrix models. However, some of the deformations exhibit an apparent breakdown of unitarity in the form of a negative spectral density at disc order. We show here that the source of the problem is the presence of a multi-valued solution of the leading order matrix model string equation. While for a class of deformations we fix the problem by identifying a first order phase transition, for others we show that the theory is both perturbatively and non-perturbatively inconsistent. Aspects of the phase structure of the deformations are mapped out, using methods known to supply a non-perturbative definition of undeformed JT gravity. Some features are in qualitative agreement with a semi-classical analysis of the phase structure of two-dimensional black holes in these deformed theories.

Quantum BMS transformations in conformally flat space-times and holography

We define and study asymptotic Killing and conformal Killing vectors in $d$-dimensional Minkowski, (A)dS, $\mathbb{R}\times S^{d-1}$ and ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^{d-2}$. We construct the associated quantum charges for an arbitrary CFT and show they satisfy a closed algebra that includes the BMS as a sub-algebra (i.e. supertranslations and superrotations) plus a novel transformation we call `superdilations'. We study representations of this algebra in the Hilbert space of the CFT, as well as the action of the finite transformations obtained by exponentiating the charges. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we propose a bulk holographic description in semi-classical gravity that reproduces the results obtained from CFT computations. We discuss the implications of our results regarding quantum hairs of asymptotically flat (near-)extremal black holes.

Achronal averaged null energy condition for extremal horizons and (A)dS

We prove the achronal averaged null energy condition for general quantum field theories in the near horizon geometry of spherical extremal black holes (i.e. ${{\rm AdS}_2\times S^{d-2}}$), de Sitter and anti-de Sitter. The derivation follows from monotonicity of relative entropy after computing the modular hamiltonian of a null deformed region. For incomplete (but maximally extended) achronal null geodesics in ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^{d-2}$, we prove the positivity of a different light-ray operator for arbitrary CFTs. This agrees with a constraint recently derived for the Lorentzian cylinder.

Novel Aspects of the Extended First Law of Entanglement

Using AdS/CFT an extended first law of entanglement has been previously derived for the vacuum reduced to a ball in Minkowski. The statement not only includes perturbations of the state but also of the conformal field theory (CFT), via variations of the generalized central charge. We clarify some subtleties previously overlooked and use simple arguments to generalize prior derivations to arbitrary gravity theories in the bulk as well as new regions in the boundary CFT. Our construction also applies to two-dimensional bulk theories and admits an interesting extension for a three-dimensional bulk, providing a curious result regarding the thermodynamic volume in extended black hole thermodynamics. We discuss future prospects regarding the extended first law of entanglement.

Global aspects of conformal symmetry and the ANEC in dS and AdS

Starting from the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski we show that conformal symmetry implies the ANEC for a conformal field theory (CFT) in a de Sitter and anti-de Sitter background. A similar and novel bound is also obtained for a CFT in the Lorentzian cylinder. Using monotonicity of relative entropy, we rederive these results for dS and the cylinder. As a byproduct we obtain the vacuum modular Hamiltonian and entanglement entropy associated to null deformed regions of CFTs in (A)dS and the cylinder. A third derivation of the ANEC in dS is shown to follow from bulk causality in AdS/CFT. Finally, we use the Tomita-Takesaki theory to show that Rindler positivity of Minkowski correlators generalizes to conformal theories defined in dS and the cylinder.

Localized thermal states and negative energy

We construct localized states defined in a ball or the half-space of a conformal field theory (CFT) in Minkowski that are thermal with respect to the local modular flow. We compute their energy density at arbitrary temperature for a variety of CFTs, and find values for which it is negative and divergent at the boundary. Despite this singular behavior we show that the energy measured by an observer is consistent with the bounds present in the literature. For holographic CFTs these states are captured by hyperbolic black holes in anti-de Sitter, where the negative energy in field theory amounts to the well known negative mass of the black hole. As a byproduct, we show that the Casini-Huerta-Myers proof of the Ryu-Takayangi holographic entanglement formula for the vacuum reduced to a ball can be naturally extended to include half-space regions.

Mass Deformations of the ABJM Theory: The Holographic Free Energy

We find a class of new supersymmetric Euclidean solutions in four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity. The holographic dual description of these backgrounds is given by a mass-deformation of the ABJM theory with general values for the R-charges. We calculate the $S^3$ free energy for the supergravity backgrounds and find agreement with the supersymmetric localization calculation of the free energy in the large $N$ limit.

Holography of negative energy states

Quantum states with negative energy densities have been long known to exist in quantum field theories. We explore the structure of such states for holographic theories using quantum information theory tools and show how certain negative energy states are naturally captured by the thermodynamics of black holes with hyperbolic horizon at zero temperature, suggesting that they provide a dual description of those states. Our results give a satisfying field theory understanding of the distinct thermodynamics of such black holes.

Holographic Heat Engines, Entanglement Entropy, and Renormalization Group Flow

We explore a fruitful connection between the physics of conformal field theories (CFTs) in d-dimensional Minkowski spacetime and the extended gravitational thermodynamics of hyperbolic black holes in (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. The CFTs are reduced on a region bounded by a sphere. We show that Renormalization Group (RG) flows between CFTs are specific thermodynamic processes in the (p,V) plane, where the irreversibility of coarse-graining flows from the ultraviolet to the infrared corresponds to the Second Law of thermodynamics, preventing heat from flowing from low temperature to high. We observe that holographic heat engines using the black holes as a working substance correspond to specific combinations of CFT flows and deformations. We construct three special engines whose net heat and work can be described in terms of changes of entanglement entropy across the sphere. Engine efficiencies emerge as simple functions of the ratio of the number of degrees of freedom of two CFTs.

Holographic heat engines and static black holes: a general efficiency formula

We study the efficiency of holographic heat engines in the context of extended black hole thermodynamics, where the cosmological constant becomes a dynamical variable. By taking the working substance as a static black hole (i.e. a space-time with vanishing $C_V$) we derive an exact and analytic efficiency formula for virtually any engine defined by a cycle in the $p-V$ plane. This formula gives a simple criteria which completely resolves the benchmarking program for static black holes and shows that for any given engine there is an infinite family of tractable deformations which leave the efficiency invariant. We also derive an upper bound for the efficiency that holds for general engines.

Modular energy inequalities from relative entropy

We obtain new constraints for the modular energy of general states by using the monotonicity property of relative entropy. In some cases, modular energy can be related to the energy density of states and these constraints lead to interesting relations between energy and entropy. In particular, we derive new quantum energy inequalities that improve some previous bounds for the energy density of states in a conformal field theory. Additionally, the inequalities derived in this manner also lead us to conclude that the entropy of the state further restricts the possible amount of negative energy allowed by the theory.
