The generalised balanced power diagram: flat sections, affine transformations and an improved rendering algorithm

The generalised balanced power diagram (GBPD) is regarded in the literature as a suitable geometric model for describing polycrystalline microstructures with curved grain boundaries. This article compiles properties of GBPDs with regard to affine transformations and flat sections. Furthermore, it extends an algorithm known for power diagrams for generating digital images, which is more efficient than the usual brute force approach, on GBPDs.

On the estimation of parameters of a spheroid distribution from planar sections

We study two different methods for inferring the parameters of a spheroid distribution from planar sections of a stationary spatial system of spheroids: one method first unfolds non-parametrically the joint size-shape-orientation distribution of the observable ellipses in the plane into the joint size-shape-orientation distribution of the spheroids followed by a maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters; the second method directly estimates these parameters based on statistics of the observable ellipses using a quasi-likelihood approach. As an application we consider a metal-matrix composite with ceramic particles as reinforcing inclusions, model the inclusions as prolate spheroids and estimate the parameters of their distribution from planar sections.

Systematic co-occurrence of tail correlation functions among max-stable processes

The tail correlation function (TCF) is one of the most popular bivariate extremal dependence measures that has entered the literature under various names. We study to what extent the TCF can distinguish between different classes of well-known max-stable processes and identify essentially different processes sharing the same TCF.

Generalizations of Matérn's hard-core point processes

Matérn's hard-core processes are valuable point process models in spatial statistics. In order to extend their field of application, Matérn's original models are generalized here, both as point processes and particle processes. The thinning rule uses a distance-dependent probability function, which controls deletion of points close together. For this general setting, explicit formulas for first- and second-order characteristics can be given. Two examples from materials science illustrate the application of the models.

Random Marked Sets

We aim to link random fields and marked point processes and therefore introduce a new class of stochastic processes which are defined on a random set in R^d. Unlike for random fields, the mark covariance function of a marked random set is in general not positive definite. This implies that in many situations the use of simple geostatistical methods appears to be questionable. Surprisingly, for a special class of processes based on Gaussian random fields, we do have positive definiteness for the corresponding mark covariance function and mark correlation function.
