Elliptic Methods for Solving the Linearized Field Equations of Causal Variational Principles

The existence theory is developed for solutions of the inhomogeneous linearized field equations for causal variational principles. These equations are formulated weakly with an integral operator which is shown to be bounded and symmetric on a Hilbert space endowed with a suitably adapted weighted $L^2$-scalar product. Guided by the procedure in the theory of linear elliptic partial differential equations, we use the spectral calculus to define Sobolev-type Hilbert spaces and invert the linearized field operator as an operator between such function spaces. The uniqueness of the resulting weak solutions is analyzed. Our constructions are illustrated in simple explicit examples. The connection to the causal action principle for static causal fermion systems is explained.

Causal Fermion Systems: Classical Gravity and Beyond

In this short review, we explain how and in which sense the causal action principle for causal fermion systems gives rise to classical gravity and the Einstein equations. Moreover, methods are presented for going beyond classical gravity, with applications to a positive mass theorem for static causal fermion systems, a connection between area change and matter flux and the construction of a quantum state.

A Notion of Entropy for Causal Fermion Systems

A notion of entropy is introduced for causal fermion systems. This entropy is a measure of the state of disorder of a causal fermion system at a given time compared to the vacuum. The definition is given both in the finite and infinite-dimensional settings. General properties of the entropy are analyzed.

On Global Hyperbolicity of Spacetimes: Topology Meets Functional Analysis

This chapter is an up-to-date account of results on globally hyperbolic spacetimes, and serves several purposes. We begin with the exposition of results from a foundational level, where the main tools are order theory and general topology, we continue with results of a more geometric nature, and we conclude with results that are related to current research in theoretical physics. In each case, we list a number of open questions and formulate, for a class of spacetimes, an interesting connection between global hyperbolicity of a manifold and the geodesic completeness of its corresponding space-like surfaces. This connection is substantial for the proof of essential self-adjointness of a class of pseudo differential operators, that stem from relativistic quantum field theory.

Fermionic Fock Spaces and Quantum States for Causal Fermion Systems

It is shown for causal fermion systems describing Minkowski-type spacetimes that an interacting causal fermion system at time $t$ gives rise to a distinguished state on the algebra generated by fermionic and bosonic field operators. The proof of positivity of the state is given and representations are constructed.

The Linear Dynamics of Wave Functions in Causal Fermion Systems

The dynamics of spinorial wave functions in a causal fermion system is studied. A so-called dynamical wave equation is derived. Its solutions form a Hilbert space, whose scalar product is represented by a conserved surface layer integral. We prove under general assumptions that the initial value problem for the dynamical wave equation admits a unique global solution. Causal Green's operators are constructed and analyzed. Our findings are illustrated in the example of the regularized Minkowski vacuum.

Banach Manifold Structure and Infinite-Dimensional Analysis for Causal Fermion Systems

A mathematical framework is developed for the analysis of causal fermion systems in the infinite-dimensional setting. It is shown that the regular spacetime point operators form a Banach manifold endowed with a canonical Fréchet-smooth Riemannian metric. The so-called expedient differential calculus is introduced with the purpose of treating derivatives of functions on Banach spaces which are differentiable only in certain directions. A chain rule is proven for Hölder continuous functions which are differentiable on expedient subspaces. These results are made applicable to causal fermion systems by proving that the causal Lagrangian is Hölder continuous. Moreover, Hölder continuity is analyzed for the integrated causal Lagrangian.

Complex Structures on Jet Spaces and Bosonic Fock Space Dynamics for Causal Variational Principles

Based on conservation laws for surface layer integrals for critical points of causal variational principles, it is shown how jet spaces can be endowed with an almost-complex structure. We analyze under which conditions the almost-complex structure can be integrated to a canonical complex structure. Combined with the scalar product expressed by a surface layer integral, we obtain a complex Hilbert space $\mathfrak{h}$. The Euler-Lagrange equations of the causal variational principle describe a nonlinear time evolution on $\mathfrak{h}$. Rewriting multilinear operators on $\mathfrak{h}$ as linear operators on corresponding tensor products and using a conservation law for a nonlinear surface layer integral, we obtain a linear norm-preserving time evolution on bosonic Fock spaces. The so-called holomorphic approximation is introduced, in which the dynamics is described by a unitary time evolution on the bosonic Fock space. The error of this approximation is quantified. Our constructions explain why and under which assumptions critical points of causal variational principles give rise to a second-quantized, unitary dynamics on Fock spaces.

Linearized Fields for Causal Variational Principles: Existence Theory and Causal Structure

The existence theory for solutions of the linearized field equations for causal variational principles is developed. We begin by studying the Cauchy problem locally in lens-shaped regions, defined as subsets of space-time which admit foliations by surface layers satisfying hyperbolicity conditions. We prove existence of weak solutions and show uniqueness up to vectors in the orthogonal complement of the jets used for testing. The connection between weak and strong solutions is analyzed. Global solutions are constructed by exhausting space-time by lens-shaped regions. We construct advanced and retarded Green's operators and study their properties.

Local Algebras for Causal Fermion Systems in Minkowski Space

A notion of local algebras is introduced in the theory of causal fermion systems. Their properties are studied in the example of the regularized Dirac sea vacuum in Minkowski space. The commutation relations are worked out, and the differences to the canonical commutation relations are discussed. It is shown that the spacetime point operators associated to a Cauchy surface satisfy a time slice axiom. It is proven that the algebra generated by operators in an open set is irreducible as a consequence of Hegerfeldt's theorem. The light cone structure is recovered by analyzing expectation values of the operators in the algebra in the limit when the regularization is removed. It is shown that every spacetime point operator commutes with the algebras localized away from its null cone, up to small corrections involving the regularization length.

Causal Variational Principles in the $σ$-Locally Compact Setting: Existence of Minimizers

We prove the existence of minimizers of causal variational principles on second countable, locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Moreover, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. The method is to first prove the existence of minimizers of the causal variational principle restricted to compact subsets for a lower semi-continuous Lagrangian. Exhausting the underlying topological space by compact subsets and rescaling the corresponding minimizers, we obtain a sequence which converges vaguely to a regular Borel measure of possibly infinite total volume. It is shown that, for continuous Lagrangians of compact range, this measure solves the Euler-Lagrange equations. Furthermore, we prove that the constructed measure is a minimizer under variations of compact support. Under additional assumptions, it is proven that this measure is a minimizer under variations of finite volume. We finally extend our results to continuous Lagrangians decaying in entropy.

A Non-Perturbative Construction of the Fermionic Projector on Globally Hyperbolic Manifolds II -- Space-Times of Infinite Lifetime

The previous functional analytic construction of the fermionic projector on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds is extended to space-times of infinite lifetime. The construction is based on an analysis of families of solutions of the Dirac equation with a varying mass parameter. It makes use of the so-called mass oscillation property which implies that integrating over the mass parameter generates decay of the Dirac wave functions at infinity. We obtain a canonical decomposition of the solution space of the massive Dirac equation into two subspaces, independent of observers or the choice of coordinates. The constructions are illustrated in the examples of ultrastatic space-times and de Sitter space-time.

The Causal Action in Minkowski Space and Surface Layer Integrals

The Lagrangian of the causal action principle is computed in Minkowski space for Dirac wave functions interacting with classical electromagnetism and linearized gravity in the limiting case when the ultraviolet cutoff is removed. Various surface layer integrals are computed in this limiting case.

Two-Dimensional Area and Matter Flux in the Theory of Causal Fermion Systems

The notions of two-dimensional area, Killing fields and matter flux are introduced in the setting of causal fermion systems. It is shown that for critical points of the causal action, the area change of two-dimensional surfaces under a Killing flow in null directions is proportional to the matter flux through these surfaces. This relation generalizes an equation in classical general relativity due to Ted Jacobson to the setting of causal fermion systems.

Causal Fermion Systems and the ETH Approach to Quantum Theory

After reviewing the theory of "causal fermion systems" (CFS theory) and the "Events, Trees, and Histories Approach" to quantum theory (ETH approach), we compare some of the mathematical structures underlying these two general frameworks and discuss similarities and differences. For causal fermion systems, we introduce future algebras based on causal relations inherent to a causal fermion system. These algebras are analogous to the algebras previously introduced in the ETH approach. We then show that the spacetime points of a causal fermion system have properties similar to those of "events", as defined in the ETH approach. Our discussion is underpinned by a survey of results on causal fermion systems describing Minkowski space that show that an operator representing a spacetime point commutes with the algebra in its causal future, up to tiny corrections that depend on a regularization length.

Perturbation Theory for Critical Points of Causal Variational Principles

The perturbation theory for critical points of causal variational principles is developed. We first analyze the class of perturbations obtained by multiplying the universal measure by a weight function and taking the push-forward under a diffeomorphism. Then the constructions are extended to convex combinations of such measures, leading to perturbation expansions for the mean and the fluctuation of the measure, both being coupled in higher order perturbation theory. It is explained how our methods and results apply to the causal action principle for causal fermion systems. It is shown how the perturbation expansion in the continuum limit and the effect of microscopic mixing are recovered in specific limiting cases.
