The lattice structure of negative Sobolev and extrapolation spaces

It is well-known that the Sobolev spaces $W^{k,p}(\mathbb R^d)$ are vector lattices with respect to the pointwise almost everywhere order if $k \in \{0,1\}$, but not if $k \ge 2$. In this note, we consider negative $k$ and show that the span of the positive cone in $W^{k,p}(\mathbb R^d)$ is a vector lattice in this case. We also prove a related abstract result: if $(T(t))_{t \in [0,\infty)}$ is a positive $C_0$-semigroup on a Banach lattice $X$ with order continuous norm, then the span of the cone $X_{-1,+}$ in the extrapolation space $X_{-1}$ is a vector lattice. This complements results obtained by Bátkai, Jacob, Wintermayr, and Voigt in the context of perturbation theory and provides additional context for the theory of infinite-dimensional positive systems.

Implications of structured continuous maximal regularity

We study how maximal regularity estimates with respect to the continuous functions improve automatically in cases where the spatial norm is fundamentally different from the supremum norm. More precisely, we invoke properties such as weak compactness of convolution-type operators related to the mild solutions of the underlying linear evolution equations to sharpen the a priori estimates. These results have several applications: such as a new proof of Guerre-Delabriere's result on $\mathrm{L}^1$-maximal regularity and an extension of Baillon's theorem; a simplification for well-known perturbation theorems for generation of $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups; and we resolve an open problem on input-to-state stability from control theory for a general abstract class of systems.

Laplace-Carleson embeddings and infinity-norm admissibility

A full characterization of the boundedness of Laplace--Carleson embeddings on $L^\infty$ is provided, in terms of the Carleson intensity of the respective measure and of a suitable weighted Berezin transform of the measure. Moreover, boundedness results, and in some cases full characterizations of boundedness, are proved for a large class of Orlicz spaces. These findings are crucial for characterizing admissibility of control operators for linear diagonal semigroup systems in a variety of contexts. A particular focus is laid on essentially bounded inputs.

Admissible operators for sun-dual semigroups

We extend classical duality results by Weiss on admissible operators to settings where the dual semigroup lacks strong continuity. This is possible using the sun-dual framework, which is not immediate from the duality of the input and output maps. This extension enables the testing of admissibility for a broader range of examples, in particular for state space of continuous functions or $L^1$.

Continuous maximal regularity in locally convex spaces

We study maximal regularity with respect to continuous functions for strongly continuous semigroups on locally convex spaces as well as its relation to the notion of admissible operators. This extends several results for classical strongly continuous semigroups on Banach spaces. In particular, we show that Travis' characterization of $\mathrm{C}$-maximal regularity using the notion of bounded semivariation carries over to the general case. Under some topological assumptions, we further show the equivalence between maximal regularity and admissibility in this context.

BIBO stability of 1-D hyperbolic boundary control systems

We study the question of bounded-input bounded-output (BIBO) stability of a class of 1-D hyperbolic boundary control systems, which, in particular, contains distributed port-Hamiltonian systems. Exploiting the particular structure of the transfer function of these systems, we derive several sufficient conditions for BIBO stability.

Limit-case admissibility for positive infinite-dimensional systems

In the context of positive infinite-dimensional linear systems, we systematically study $L^p$-admissible control and observation operators with respect to the limit-cases $p=\infty$ and $p=1$, respectively. This requires an in-depth understanding of the order structure on the extrapolation space $X_{-1}$, which we provide. These properties of $X_{-1}$ also enable us to discuss when zero-class admissibility is automatic. While those limit-cases are the weakest form of admissibility on the $L^p$-scale, it is remarkable that they sometimes follow from order theoretic and geometric assumptions. Our assumptions on the geometries of the involved spaces are minimal.

The algebraic numerical range as a spectral set in Banach algebras

We investigate when the algebraic numerical range is a $C$-spectral set in a Banach algebra. While providing several counterexamples based on classical ideas as well as combinatorial Banach spaces, we discuss positive results for matrix algebras and provide an absolute constant in the case of complex $2\times2$-matrices with the induced $1$-norm. Furthermore, we discuss positive results for infinite-dimensional Banach algebras, including the Calkin algebra.

A sharp bound for the functional calculus of $ρ$-contractions

Let $A$ be a $ρ$-contraction and $f$ a rational function mapping the closed unit disk into itself. With a new characterization of $ρ$-contractions we prove that \begin{align*} \big\|f(A)\big\|\leq \fracρ{2}\big(1-|f(0)|^{2}\big)+\sqrt{\frac{ρ^{2}}{4}\big(1-|f(0)|^{2}\big){}^{2}+|f(0)|^{2}}. \end{align*} We further show that this bound is sharp. This refines an estimate by Okubo--Ando and, for $ρ=2$, is consistent with a result by Drury.

A dual notion to BIBO stability

In this paper we consider BIBO stability of infinite-dimensional linear state-space systems and the related notion of $L^1$-to-$L^1$ input-output stability (abbreviated LILO). We show that in the case of finite-dimensional input and output spaces, both are equivalent and preserved under duality transformations. In the general case, neither of these properties is satisfied, but BIBO and LILO stability remain dual to each other.

On checking $\mathrm{L}^p$-admissibility for parabolic control systems

In this note we discuss the difficulty of verifying $\mathrm{L}^p$-admissibility for $p\neq 2$ -- that even manifests in the presence of a self-adjoint semigroup generator on a Hilbert space -- and survey tests for $\mathrm{L}^p$-admissibility of given control operators. These tests are obtained by virtue of either mapping properties of boundary trace operators, yielding a characterization of admissibility via abstract interpolation spaces; or through Laplace--Carleson embeddings, slightly extending results from Jacob, Partington and Pott to a class of systems which are not necessarily diagonal with respect to sequence spaces. Special focus is laid on illustrating the theory by means of examples based on the heat equation on various domains.

Sun dual theory for bi-continuous semigroups

The sun dual space corresponding to a strongly continuous semigroup is a known concept when dealing with dual semigroups, which are in general only weak$^*$-continuous. In this paper we develop a corresponding theory for bi-continuous semigroups under mild assumptions on the involved locally convex topologies. We also discuss sun reflexivity and Favard spaces in this context, extending classical results by van Neerven.

On BIBO stability of infinite-dimensional linear state-space systems

In this paper we consider BIBO stability of systems described by infinite-dimensional linear state-space representations, filling the so far unattended gap of a formal definition and characterization of BIBO stability in this general case. Furthermore, we provide several sufficient conditions guaranteeing BIBO stability of a particular system and discuss to which extent this property is preserved under additive and multiplicative perturbations of the system.

BIBO stability for funnel control: semilinear internal dynamics with unbounded input and output operators

This note deals with Bounded-Input-Bounded-Output (BIBO) stability for semilinear infinite-dimensional dynamical systems allowing for boundary control and boundary observation. We give sufficient conditions that guarantee BIBO stability based on Lipschitz conditions with respect to interpolation spaces. Our results can be applied to guarantee feasibility of funnel control for coupled ODE-PDE systems, as shown by means of an example from chemical engineering.

On Abstract Spectral Constants

We prove bounds for a class of unital homomorphisms arising in the study of spectral sets, by involving extremal functions and vectors. These are used to recover three celebrated results on spectral constants by Crouzeix--Palencia, Okubo--Ando and von Neumann in a unified way and to refine a recent result by Crouzeix--Greenbaum.

Characterization of Orlicz admissibility

In this note we extend two characterizations of admissible operators with respect to $\mathrm{L}^p$ to more general Orlicz spaces. The equivalent conditions are given by the property that an associated operator generates a strongly continuous semigroup and in terms of a resolvent estimate.

On equicontinuity and tightness of bi-continuous semigroups

In contrast to classical strongly continuous semigroups, the study of bi-continuous semigroups comes with some freedom in the properties of the associated locally convex topology. This paper aims to give minimal assumptions in order to recover typical features like tightness and equicontinuity with respect to the mixed topology as well as to carefully clarify on mutual relations between previously studied variants of these notions. The abstract results -- exploiting techniques from topological vector spaces -- are thoroughly discussed by means of several example classes, such as semigroups on spaces of bounded continuous functions.

Remarks on input-to-state stability of collocated systems with saturated feedback

We investigate input-to-state stability (ISS) of infinite-dimensional collocated control systems subject to saturated feedback. Here, the unsaturated closed loop is dissipative and uniformly globally asymptotically stable. Under an additional assumption on the linear system, we show ISS for the saturated one. We discuss the sharpness of the conditions in light of existing results in the literature.
