An $L_p$-estimate for the stochastic heat equation on an angular domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$

We prove a weighted $L_p$-estimate for the stochastic convolution associated to the stochastic heat equation with zero Dirichlet boundary condition on a planar angular domain $\mathcal{D}_{κ_0}\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ with angle $κ_0\in(0,2π)$. Furthermore, we use this estimate to establish existence and uniqueness of a solution to the corresponding equation in suitable weighted $L_p$-Sobolev spaces. In order to capture the singular behaviour of the solution and its derivatives at the vertex, we use powers of the distance to the vertex as weight functions. The admissible range of weight parameters depends explicitly on the angle $κ_0$.

Weak error analysis via functional Itô calculus

We consider autonomous stochastic ordinary differential equations (SDEs) and weak approximations of their solutions for a general class of sufficiently smooth path-dependent functionals f. Based on tools from functional Itô calculus, such as the functional Itô formula and functional Kolmogorov equation, we derive a general representation formula for the weak error $E(f(X_T)-f(\tilde X_T))$, where $X_T$ and $\tilde X_T$ are the paths of the solution process and its approximation up to time T. The functional $f:C([0,T],R^d)\to R$ is assumed to be twice continuously Fréchet differentiable with derivatives of polynomial growth. The usefulness of the formula is demonstrated in the one dimensional setting by showing that if the solution to the SDE is approximated via the linearly time-interpolated explicit Euler method, then the rate of weak convergence for sufficiently regular f is 1.

Stochastic fiber dynamics in a spatially semi-discrete setting

We investigate a spatially discrete surrogate model for the dynamics of a slender, elastic, inextensible fiber in turbulent flows. Deduced from a continuous space-time beam model for which no solution theory is available, it consists of a high-dimensional second order stochastic differential equation in time with a nonlinear algebraic constraint and an associated Lagrange multiplier term. We establish a suitable framework for the rigorous formulation and analysis of the semi-discrete model and prove existence and uniqueness of a global strong solution. The proof is based on an explicit representation of the Lagrange multiplier and on the observation that the obtained explicit drift term in the equation satisfies a one-sided linear growth condition on the constraint manifold. The theoretical analysis is complemented by numerical studies concerning the time discretization of our model. The performance of implicit Euler-type methods can be improved when using the explicit representation of the Lagrange multiplier to compute refined initial estimates for the Newton method applied in each time step.

Weak convergence of finite element approximations of linear stochastic evolution equations with additive Lévy noise

We present an abstract framework to study weak convergence of numerical approximations of linear stochastic partial differential equations driven by additive Lévy noise. We first derive a representation formula for the error which we then apply to study space-time discretizations of the stochastic heat equation, a Volterra-type integro-differential equation, and the wave equation as examples. For twice continuously differentiable test functions with bounded second derivative (with an additional condition on the second derivative for the wave equation) the weak rate of convergence is found to be twice the strong rate. The results extend earlier work by two of the authors as we consider general square-integrable infinite-dimensional Lévy processes and do not require boundedness of the test functions and their first derivative. Furthermore, the present framework is applicable to both hyperbolic and parabolic equations, and even to stochastic Volterra integro-differential equations.

On the convergence analysis of the inexact linearly implicit Euler scheme for a class of SPDEs

This paper is concerned with the adaptive numerical treatment of stochastic partial differential equations. Our method of choice is Rothe's method. We use the implicit Euler scheme for the time discretization. Consequently, in each step, an elliptic equation with random right-hand side has to be solved. In practice, this cannot be performed exactly, so that efficient numerical methods are needed. Well-established adaptive wavelet or finite-element schemes, which are guaranteed to converge with optimal order, suggest themselves. We investigate how the errors corresponding to the adaptive spatial discretization propagate in time, and we show how in each time step the tolerances have to be chosen such that the resulting perturbed discretization scheme realizes the same order of convergence as the one with exact evaluations of the elliptic subproblems.

Singular Behavior of the Solution to the Stochastic Heat Equation on a Polygonal Domain

We study the stochastic heat equation with trace class noise and zero Dirichlet boundary condition on a bounded polygonal domain O in R^2. It is shown that the solution u can be decomposed into a regular part u_R and a singular part u_S which incorporates the corner singularity functions for the Poisson problem. Due to the temporal irregularity of the noise, both u_R and u_S have negative L_2-Sobolev regularity of order s<-1/2 in time. The regular part u_R admits spatial Sobolev regularity of order r=2, while the spatial Sobolev regularity of u_S is restricted by r<1+π/γ, where γis the largest interior angle at the boundary of O. We obtain estimates for the Sobolev norm of u_R and the Sobolev norms of the coefficients of the singularity functions. The proof is based on a Laplace transform argument w.r.t. the time variable. The result is of interest in the context of numerical methods for stochastic PDEs.

On the Lq(Lp)-regularity and Besov smoothness of stochastic parabolic equations on bounded Lipschitz domains

We investigate the regularity of linear stochastic parabolic equations with zero Dirichlet boundary condition on bounded Lipschitz domains $O \subset R^d$ with both theoretical and numerical purpose. We use N.V. Krylov's framework of stochastic parabolic weighted Sobolev spaces $\mathfrak{H}^{γ,q}_{p,θ}(O;T)$. The summability parameters p and q in space and time may differ. Existence and uniqueness of solutions in these spaces is established and the Hölder regularity in time is analysed. Moreover, we prove a general embedding of weighted Lp(O)-Sobolev spaces into the scale of Besov spaces $B^α_{τ,τ}(O), 1/τ=α/d+1/p, α> 0$. This leads to a Hölder-Besov regularity result for the solution process. The regularity in this Besov scale determines the order of convergence that can be achieved by certain nonlinear approximation schemes.

Spatial Besov Regularity for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations on Lipschitz Domains

We use the scale of Besov spaces B^α_{τ,τ}(O), α>0, 1/τ=α/d+1/p, p fixed, to study the spatial regularity of the solutions of linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations on bounded Lipschitz domains O\subset R^d. The Besov smoothness determines the order of convergence that can be achieved by nonlinear approximation schemes. The proofs are based on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and characterizations of Besov spaces by wavelet expansions.

Weak order for the discretization of the stochastic heat equation driven by impulsive noise

Considering a linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equation driven by impulsive space time noise, dX_t+AX_t dt= Q^{1/2}dZ_t, X_0=x_0\in H, t\in [0,T], we approximate the distribution of X_T. (Z_t)_{t\in[0,T]} is an impulsive cylindrical process and Q describes the spatial covariance structure of the noise; Tr(A^{-α})<\infty for some α>0 and A^βQ is bounded for some β\in(α-1,α]. A discretization (X_h^n)_{n\in\{0,1,...,N\}} is defined via the finite element method in space (parameter h>0) and a θ-method in time (parameter Δt=T/N). For ϕ\in C^2_b(H;R) we show an integral representation for the error |Eϕ(X^N_h)-Eϕ(X_T)| and prove that |Eϕ(X^N_h)-Eϕ(X_T)|=O(h^{2γ}+(Δt)^γ) where γ<1-α+β.
