From Hardy to Rellich inequalities on graphs

We show how to deduce Rellich inequalities from Hardy inequalities on infinite graphs. Specifically, the obtained Rellich inequality gives an upper bound on a function by the Laplacian of the function in terms of weighted norms. These weights involve the Hardy weight and a function which satisfies an eikonal inequality. The results are proven first for Laplacians and are extended to Schrödinger operators afterwards.

The Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem beyond amenable groups

We introduce a new isomorphism-invariant notion of entropy for measure preserving actions of arbitrary countable groups on probability spaces, which we call orbital Rokhlin entropy. It employs Danilenko's orbital approach to entropy of a partition, and is motivated by Seward's recent generalization of Rokhlin entropy from amenable to general groups. A key ingredient in our approach is the use of an auxiliary probability-measure-preserving hyperfinite equivalence relation. Under the assumption of ergodicity of the auxiliary equivalence relation, our main result is a Shannon-McMillan-Breiman pointwise almost sure convergence theorem for the orbital entropy of partitions in measure-preserving group actions, the first such convergence result going beyond the realm of amenable groups. As a special case, we obtain a Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem for all strongly mixing actions of any countable group. Furthermore, we compare orbital Rokhlin entropy to Rokhlin entropy, and using an important recent result of Seward we show that they coincide for free, ergodic actions of any countable group. Finally, we consider actions of non-Abelian free groups and demonstrate the geometric significance of the entropy equipartition property implied by the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem. We show that the orbital entropy of a partition is the limit of the information functions of the sequence of partitions arising from refining any given finite partition along almost every horoball in the group.

The Ihara Zeta function for infinite graphs

We put forward the concept of measure graphs. These are (possibly uncountable) graphs equipped with an action of a groupoid and a measure invariant under this action. Examples include finite graphs, periodic graphs, graphings and percolation graphs. Making use of Connes' non-commutative integration theory we construct a Zeta function and present a determinant formula for it. We further introduce a notion of weak convergence of measure graphs and show that our construction is compatible with it. The approximation of the Ihara Zeta function via the normalized version on finite graphs in the sense of Benjamini-Schramm follows as a special case. Our framework not only unifies corresponding earlier results occurring in the literature. It likewise provides extensions to rich new classes of objects such as percolation graphs.

Delone dynamical systems and spectral convergence

In the realm of Delone sets in locally compact, second countable, Hausdorff groups, we develop a dynamical systems approach in order to study the continuity behavior of measured quantities arising from point sets. A special focus is both on the autocorrelation, as well as on the density of states for random bounded operators. It is shown that for uniquely ergodic limit systems, the latter measures behave continuously with respect to the Chabauty-Fell convergence of hulls. In the special situation of Euclidean spaces, our results complement recent developments in describing spectra as topological limits: we show that the measured quantities under consideration can be approximated via periodic analogs.

Almost-additive ergodic theorems for amenable groups

In this paper we prove a general convergence theorem for almost-additive set functions on unimodular, amenable groups. These mappings take their values in some Banach space. By extending the theory of epsilon-quasi tiling techniques, we set the ground for far-reaching applications in the theory of group dynamics. In particular, we verify the almost-everywhere convergence of abstract approximable bounded, additive processes, as well as a Banach space approximation result for the spectral distribution function (integrated density of states) for random operators on discrete structures in a metric space. Further, we include a Banach space valued version of the Lindenstrauss ergodic theorem for amenable groups.

Optimal Hardy inequalities for Schrödinger operators on graphs

For a given subcritical discrete Schrödinger operator $H$ on a weighted infinite graph $X$, we construct a Hardy-weight $w$ which is optimal in the following sense. The operator $H - λw$ is subcritical in $X$ for all $λ< 1$, null-critical in $X$ for $λ= 1$, and supercritical near any neighborhood of infinity in $X$ for any $λ> 1$. Our results rely on a criticality theory for Schrödinger operators on general weighted graphs.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, I: Auto-correlation of model sets

We study uniform and non-uniform model sets in arbitrary locally compact second countable (lcsc) groups, which provide a natural generalization of uniform model sets in locally compact abelian groups as defined by Meyer and used as mathematical models of quasi-crystals. We then define a notion of auto-correlation for subsets of finite local complexitiy in arbitrary lcsc groups, which generalizes Hof's classical definition beyond the class of amenable groups, and provide a formula for the auto-correlation of a regular model set. Along the way we show that the punctured hull of an arbitrary regular model set admits a unique invariant probability measure, even in the case where the punctured hull is non-compact and the group is non-amenable. In fact this measure is also the unique stationary measure with respect to any admissible probability measure.

An improved discrete Hardy inequality

We improve the classical discrete Hardy inequality \begin{equation*}\label{1} \sum _{n=1}^{\infty }a_{n}^{2}\geq \left({\frac {1}{2}}\right)^{2} \sum _{n=1}^{\infty }\left({\frac {a_{1}+a_{2}+\cdots +a_{n}}{n}}\right)^{2}, \end{equation*} where $\{a_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ is any sequence of non-negative real numbers.

Diffusion on Delone sets

We consider graphs associated to Delone sets in Euclidean space. Such graphs arise in various ways from tilings. Here, we provide a unified framework. In this context, we study the associated Laplace operators and show Gaussian heat kernel bounds for their semigroups. These results apply to both metric and discrete graphs.

Convergence theorems for graph sequences

In this paper, we deal with a notion of Banach space-valued mappings defined on a set consisting of finite graphs with uniformly bounded vertex degree. These functions will be endowed with certain boundedness and additivity criteria. We examine their normalized long-term behaviour along a particular class of graph sequences. Using techniques developed by Elek, we show convergence in the topology of the Banach space if the corresponding graph sequence possesses a hyperfinite structure. These considerations extend and complement the corresponding results for amenable groups. As an application, we verify the uniform approximation of the integrated density of states for bounded, finite range operators on discrete structures. Further, we extend results concerning an abstract version of Fekete's Lemma for amenable groups and cancellative semigroups to the geometric situation of convergent graph sequences.

Geometry and spectrum of rapidly branching graphs

We study graphs whose vertex degree tends and which are, therefore, called rapidly branching. We prove spectral estimates, discreteness of spectrum, first order eigenvalue and Weyl asymptotics solely in terms of the vertex degree growth. The underlying techniques are estimates on the isoperimetric constant. Furthermore, we give lower volume growth bounds and we provide a new criterion for stochastic incompleteness.

Sectional curvature of polygonal complexes with planar substructures

In this paper we introduce a class of polygonal complexes for which we can define a notion of sectional combinatorial curvature. These complexes can be viewed as generalizations of 2-dimensional Euclidean and hyperbolic buildings. We focus on the case of non-positive and negative combinatorial curvature. As geometric results we obtain a Hadamard-Cartan type theorem, thinness of bigons, Gromov hyperbolicity and estimates for the Cheeger constant. We employ the latter to get spectral estimates, show discreteness of the spectrum in the sense of a Donnelly-Li type theorem and present corresponding eigenvalue asymptotics. Moreover, we prove a unique continuation theorem for eigenfunctions and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity.

Uniform existence of the integrated density of states on metric Cayley graphs

Given a finitely generated amenable group we consider ergodic random Schrödinger operators on a Cayley graph with random potentials and random boundary conditions. We show that the normalised eigenvalue counting functions of finite volume parts converge uniformly. The integrated density of states as the limit can be expressed by a Pastur-Shubin formula. The spectrum supports the corresponding measure and discontinuities correspond to the existence of compactly supported eigenfunctions.

A Banach space-valued ergodic theorem for amenable groups and applications

In this paper we study unimodular amenable groups. The first part is devoted to results on the existence of uniform families of epsilon-quasi tilings for these groups. In this context, constructions of Ornstein and Weiss are extended by quantitative estimates for the covering properties of the corresponding decompositions. Afterwards, we apply the developed methods to obtain an abstract ergodic theorem for a class of functions mapping subsets of a countable, amenable group into some Banach space. This significantly extends and complements the previous results of Lenz, Müller, Schwarzenberger and Veselić. Further, using the Lindenstrauss ergodic theorem, we describe a link of our results to classical ergodic theory. We conclude with two important applications: the uniform approximation of the integrated density of states on amenable Cayley graphs, as well as the almost-sure convergence of cluster densities in an amenable bond percolation model.

Spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero for Jacobi matrices of quasicrystals

We study one-dimensional random Jacobi operators corresponding to strictly ergodic dynamical systems. In this context, we characterize the spectrum of these operators by non-uniformity of the transfer matrices and the set where the Lyapunov exponent vanishes. Adapting this result to subshifts satisfying the so-called Boshernitzan condition, it turns out that the spectrum is supported on a Cantor set with Lebesgue measure zero. This generalizes earlier results for Schrödinger operators.
