Factorization and its Breaking in Dijet Single Transverse Spin Asymmetries in $pp$ Collisions

We study factorization in single transverse spin asymmetries for dijet production in proton-proton collisions, by considering soft gluon radiation at one-loop order. We show that the associated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization is valid at the leading logarithmic level. At next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, however, we find that soft gluon radiation generates terms in the single transverse spin dependent cross section that differ from those known for the unpolarized case. As a consequence, these terms cannot be organized in terms of a spin independent soft factor in the factorization formula. We present leading logarithmic predictions for the single transverse spin dijet asymmetry for $pp$ collisions at RHIC, based on quark Sivers functions constrained by semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. We hope that our results will contribute to a better understanding of TMD factorization breaking effects at NLL accuracy and beyond.

Jets as precision probes in electron-nucleus collisions at the Electron-Ion Collider

We discuss the prospects of using jets as precision probes in electron-nucleus collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Jets produced in deep-inelastic scattering can be calibrated by a measurement of the scattered electron. Such electron-jet "tag and probe" measurements call for an approach that is orthogonal to most HERA jet measurements as well as previous studies of jets at the future EIC. We present observables such as the electron-jet momentum balance, azimuthal correlations and jet substructure, which can provide constraints on the parton transport coefficient in nuclei. We compare simulations and analytical calculations and provide estimates of the expected medium effects. Implications for detector design at the future EIC are discussed.

Lepton-jet Correlation in Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the lepton-jet correlation in deep inelastic scattering. We perform one-loop calculations for the spin averaged and transverse spin dependent differential cross sections depending on the total transverse momentum of the final state lepton and the jet. The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism is applied to describe the relevant observables. To show the physics reach of this process, we perform a phenomenological study for HERA kinematics and comment on an ongoing analysis of experimental data. In addition, we highlight the potential of this process to constrain small-$x$ dynamics.

Jet-based measurements of Sivers and Collins asymmetries at the future Electron-Ion Collider

We present predictions and projections for hadron-in-jet measurements and electron-jet azimuthal correlations at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). These observables directly probe the three-dimensional (3D) structure of hadrons, in particular, the quark transversity and Sivers parton distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions. We explore the feasibility of these experimental measurements by detector simulations and discuss detector requirements. We conclude that jet observables have the potential to enhance the 3D imaging EIC program.

Soft Fragmentation on the Celestial Sphere

We develop two approaches to the problem of soft fragmentation of hadrons in a gauge theory for high energy processes. The first approach directly adapts the standard resummation of the parton distribution function's anomalous dimension (that of twist-two local operators) in the forward scattering regime, using $k_T$-factorization and BFKL theory, to the case of the fragmentation function by exploiting the mapping between the dynamics of eikonal lines on transverse-plane to the celestial-sphere. Critically, to correctly resum the anomalous dimension of the fragmentation function under this mapping, one must pay careful attention to the role of regularization, despite the manifest collinear or infra-red finiteness of the BFKL equation. The anomalous dependence on energy in the celestial case, arising due to the mismatch of dimensionality between positions and angles, drives the differences between the space-like and time-like anomalous dimension of parton densities, even in a conformal theory. The second approach adapts an angular-ordered evolution equation, but working in 4-2$ε$ dimensions at all angles. The two approaches are united by demanding that the anomalous dimension in 4-2$ε$ dimensions for the parton distribution function determines the kernel for the angular-ordered evolution to all orders.

QCD factorization and universality of jet cross sections in heavy-ion collisions

We review a recently proposed phenomenological framework to establish the notions of QCD factorization and universality of jet cross sections in the heavy-ion environment. First results of a global analysis of the nuclear modification factor of inclusive jets are presented where we extract medium modified jet functions using a Monte Carlo sampling approach. We observe that gluon jets are significantly more suppressed than quark jets. In addition, we study the jet radius dependence of the inclusive jet cross section in heavy-ion collisions and comment on a recent measurement from CMS. By considering for example jet substructure observables it will be possible to test the universality of the extracted medium jet functions. We thus expect that the presented results will eventually allow for extractions of medium properties with a reduced model bias.

Hadron-in-jet production at partonic threshold

We consider the longitudinal momentum distribution of hadrons inside jets in proton-proton collisions. At partonic threshold large double logarithmic corrections arise which need to be resummed to all orders. We develop a factorization formalism within SCET that allows for the joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. We achieve next-to-leading logarithmic NLL$'$ accuracy by including non-global logarithms in the leading-color approximation. Overall, we find that the threshold resummation leads to a sizable enhancement of the cross section and a reduced QCD scale dependence, suggesting that the all-order resummation can be important for the reliable extraction of fragmentation functions in global analyses when jet substructure data is included.

Jet angularities in photoproduction at the Electron-Ion Collider

We consider the one-parameter family of jet substructure observables known as angularities using the specific case of inclusive jets arising from photoproduction events at an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We perform numerical calculations at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy within perturbative QCD and compare our results to PYTHIA 6 predictions. Overall, we find good agreement and conclude that jet substructure observables are feasible at the EIC despite the relatively low jet transverse momentum and particle multiplicities. We investigate the size of subleading power corrections relevant at low energies within the Monte Carlo setup. In order to establish the validity of the Monte Carlo tune, we also perform comparisons to jet shape data at HERA. We further discuss detector requirements necessary for angularity measurements at an EIC, focusing on hadron calorimeter energy and spatial resolutions. Possible applications of precision jet substructure measurements at the EIC include the tuning of Monte Carlo event generators, the extraction of nonperturbative parameters and studies of cold nuclear matter effects.

The soft drop groomed jet radius at NLL

We present results for the soft drop groomed jet radius $R_g$ at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The radius of a groomed jet which corresponds to the angle between the two branches passing the soft drop criterion is one of the characteristic observables relevant for the precise understanding of groomed jet substructure. We establish a factorization formalism that allows for the resummation of all relevant large logarithms, which is based on demonstrating the all order equivalence to a jet veto in the region between the boundaries of the groomed and ungroomed jet. Non-global logarithms including clustering effects due to the Cambridge/Aachen algorithm are resummed to all orders using a suitable Monte Carlo algorithm. We perform numerical calculations and find a very good agreement with Pythia 8 simulations. We provide theoretical predictions for the LHC and RHIC.

Can We Observe Jet $P_T$-broadening in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the LHC?

We investigate the effect of PT-broadening on jet substructure observables in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. As an example, we focus on the opening angle of the two branches that satisfy the soft drop grooming condition in a highly energetic jet. The medium modification of the angular distribution can provide important information on the jet transport properties of hot QCD matter. In addition, we take into account a change of the overall fraction of quark and gluon jets in heavy-ion collisions. We comment on the comparison to a recent measurement from the ALICE Collaboration.

The Jet Shape at NLL$'$

The jet shape is the fraction of the jet energy within a cone $r$ centered on the jet axis. We calculate the jet shape distribution at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy plus next-to-leading order (NLL$'$), accounting for logarithms of both the jet radius $R$ and the ratio $r/R$. This is the first phenomenological study that takes the recoil of the jet axis due to soft radiation into account, which is needed to reach this accuracy, but complicates the calculation of collinear radiation and requires the treatment of rapidity logarithms and non-global logarithms. We present numerical results, finding good agreement with ATLAS and CMS measurements of the jet shape in an inclusive jet sample, $pp \to {\rm jet}+X$, for different kinematic bins. The effect of the underlying event and hadronization are included using a simple one-parameter model, since they are not part of our perturbative calculation.

Soft drop groomed jet angularities at the LHC

Jet angularities are a class of jet substructure observables where a continuous parameter is introduced in order to interpolate between different classic observables such as the jet mass and jet broadening. We consider jet angularities measured on an inclusive jet sample at the LHC where the soft drop grooming procedure is applied in order to remove soft contaminations from the jets. The soft drop algorithm allows for a precise comparison between theory and data and could be used to extract the QCD strong coupling constant $α_s$ from jet substructure data in the future. We develop a framework to realize the resummation of all relevant large logarithms at the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. To demonstrate that the developed formalism is suitable for the extraction of $α_s$, we extend our calculations to next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) for the jet mass case. Overall, we find good agreement between our NLL numerical results and Pythia simulations for LHC kinematics and we observe an improved agreement when the NNLL components are included. In addition, we expect that groomed jet angularities will be a useful handle for studying the modification of jets in heavy-ion collisions.

Threshold Resummation at NNLL for Single-particle Production in Hadronic Collisions

We develop threshold resummation for single-particle inclusive cross sections in hadron-hadron collisions to the level of next-to-next-to-leading logarithm, up to full matching with two-loop hard functions. We define and calculate all one-loop soft functions for all partonic channels. This enables us to separate the hard and soft functions at one loop. Along with these results, the one-loop finite parts of jet functions are used to check that the full soft, collinear and virtual corrections are reproduced to one loop for all partonic reactions. We exhibit these NLO results explicitly. NLO expansions of the resummed cross section match the exact NLO results extremely well numerically, and two loop expansions result in substantial corrections over many kinematic configurations. Explicit results are given in Mellin moment space, and a number of options for generating resummed cross sections are discussed.

Factorization of jet cross sections in heavy-ion collisions

We propose a new phenomenological approach to establish QCD factorization of jet cross sections in the heavy-ion environment. Starting from a factorization formalism in proton-proton collisions, we introduce medium modified jet functions to capture the leading interaction of jets with the hot and dense QCD medium. A global analysis using a Monte Carlo sampling approach is performed in order to reliably determine the new jet functions from the nuclear modification factor of inclusive jets at the LHC. We find that gluon jets are significantly more suppressed due to the presence of the medium than quark jets. In addition, we observe that the jet radius dependence is directly related to the relative suppression of quark and gluon jets. Our approach may help to improve the extraction of medium properties from data.

Lepton-jet Correlations in Deep Inelastic Scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider

We propose the lepton-jet correlation in deep inelastic scattering as a unique tool for nucleon/nucleus tomography at the electron-ion collider. The azimuthal angular correlation between the final state lepton and jet depends on the transverse momentum dependent quark distributions. We take the example of single transverse spin asymmetries to show the sensitivity to the quark Sivers function. When the correlation is studied in lepton-nucleus collisions, transverse momentum broadening effects can be used to explore cold nuclear matter effects. These features make lepton-jet correlations an important new hard probe at the EIC.

Jet substructure in high-energy hadron collisions

In the past years significant progress has been made toward achieving a quantitative understanding of jets and their substructure in high-energy proton-proton collisions from first principles in QCD. Precise measurements have become available from the experimental collaborations at the LHC and RHIC allowing a direct comparison of theoretical calculations and data. These developments make it possible to use jet substructure observables as precision probes in heavy-ion collisions. The radiation pattern inside jets contains valuable information about the hot and dense QCD medium which can be investigated using jet substructure techniques. By studying the soft sensitivity of the different observables it is possible to obtain important insights into the interaction of hard probes with the quark gluon plasma.

The groomed and ungroomed jet mass distribution for inclusive jet production at the LHC

We study jet mass distributions measured in the single inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions $pp\to \text{jet}+X$ at the LHC. We consider both standard ungroomed jets as well as soft drop groomed jets. Within the Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), we establish QCD factorization theorems for both cases and we study their relation. The developed framework allows for the joint resummation of several classes of logarithmic corrections to all orders in the strong coupling constant. For the ungroomed case, we resum logarithms in the jet radius parameter and in the small jet mass. For the groomed case, we resum in addition the logarithms in the soft threshold parameter $z_{\text{cut}}$ which is introduced by the soft drop grooming algorithm. In this way, we are able to reliably determine the absolute normalization of the groomed jet mass distribution in proton-proton collisions. All logarithmic corrections are resummed to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present numerical results and compare with the available data from the LHC. For both the groomed and ungroomed jet mass distributions we find very good agreement after including non-perturbative corrections.

Threshold and jet radius joint resummation for single-inclusive jet production

The QCD predictions for single-inclusive jet production are computed with joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. The results are compared to those based on fixed order perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order and to data by the CMS collaboration measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{S}=8$ TeV. The joint resummation results are in remarkable agreement with the data.
