Displaceability and the mean Euler characteristic

In this note we show that the mean Euler characteristic of equivariant symplectic homology is an effective obstruction against the existence of displaceable exact contact embeddings. As an application we show that certain Brieskorn manifolds do not admit displaceable exact contact embeddings.

Bifurcating extremal domains for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian

We prove the existence of a smooth family of non-compact domains $Omega_s \subset R^{n+1}$ bifurcating from the straight cylinder $B^n \times R$ for which the first eigenfunction of the Laplacian with 0 Dirichlet boundary condition also has constant Neumann data at the boundary. The domains $Omega_s$ are rotationally symmetric and periodic with respect to the R-axis of the cylinder; they are of the form $Omega_s = {(x,t) \in R^n \times R \mid |x| < 1+s \cos((2π)/T_s t) + O(s^2)}$ where $T_s = T_0 + O(s)$ and T_0 is a positive real number depending on n. For $n \ge 2$ these domains provide a smooth family of counter-examples to a conjecture of Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg. We also give rather precise upper and lower bounds for the bifurcation period T_0. This work improves a recent result of the second author.

Positive topological entropy of Reeb flows on spherizations

Let M be a closed manifold whose based loop space is ``complicated''. Examples are rationally hyperbolic manifolds and manifolds whose fundamental group has exponential growth. We prove that the topological entropy of any Reeb flow on the spherization of T*M is positive. Moreover, given q in M, for almost every q' in M the number of Reeb orbits from the fiber over q to the fiber over q' grows exponentially in time. If M is a surface of higher genus, we also obtain exponential growth of the number of closed Reeb orbits.

Notes on monotone Lagrangian twist tori

We construct monotone Lagrangian tori in the standard symplectic vector space, in the complex projective space and in products of spheres. We explain how to classify these Lagrangian tori up to symplectomorphism and Hamiltonian isotopy, and how to show that they are not displaceable by Hamiltonian isotopies.

The embedding capacity of 4-dimensional symplectic ellipsoids

This paper calculates the function $c(a)$ whose value at $a$ is the infimum of the size of a ball that contains a symplectic image of the ellipsoid $E(1,a)$. (Here $a \ge 1$ is the ratio of the area of the large axis to that of the smaller axis.) The structure of the graph of $c(a)$ is surprisingly rich. The volume constraint implies that $c(a)$ is always greater than or equal to the square root of $a$, and it is not hard to see that this is equality for large $a$. However, for $a$ less than the fourth power $τ^4$ of the golden ratio, $c(a)$ is piecewise linear, with graph that alternately lies on a line through the origin and is horizontal. We prove this by showing that there are exceptional curves in blow ups of the complex projective plane whose homology classes are given by the continued fraction expansions of ratios of Fibonacci numbers. On the interval $[τ^4,7]$ we find $c(a)=(a+1)/3$. For $a \ge 7$, the function $c(a)$ coincides with the square root except on a finite number of intervals where it is again piecewise linear. The embedding constraints coming from embedded contact homology give rise to another capacity function $c_{ECH}$ which may be computed by counting lattice points in appropriate right angled triangles. According to Hutchings and Taubes, the functorial properties of embedded contact homology imply that $c_{ECH}(a) \le c(a)$ for all $a$. We show here that $c_{ECH}(a) \ge c(a)$ for all $a$.

Minimal atlases of closed contact manifolds

We study the minimal number C(M,ξ) of contact charts that one needs to cover a closed connected contact manifold (M,ξ). Our basic result is C(M,ξ) \le \dim M + 1. We compute C(M,ξ) for all closed connected contact 3-manifolds: C (M,ξ) = 2 if M = S^3 and ξis tight, 3 if M = S^3 and ξis overtwisted or if M = #_k (S^2 \times S^1), 4 otherwise. We also show that on every sphere S^{2n+1} there exists a contact structure with C(S^{2n+1},ξ) \ge 3.

Minimal atlases of closed symplectic manifolds

We study the number of Darboux charts needed to cover a closed connected symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, and effectively estimate this number from below and from above in terms of the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category of $M$ and the Gromov width of $(M,ω)$.

Fiberwise volume growth via Lagrangian intersections

We consider Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $ϕ$ of the unit cotangent bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which extend to Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $T^*M$ equal to the time-1-map of the geodesic flow for $|p| \ge 1$. For such diffeomorphisms we establish uniform lower bounds for the fiberwise volume growth of $ϕ$ which were previously known for geodesic flows and which depend only on $(M,g)$ or on the homotopy type of $M$. More precisely, we show that for each $q \in M$ the volume growth of the unit ball in $T_q^*M$ under the iterates of $ϕ$ is at least linear if $M$ is rationally elliptic, is exponential if $M$ is rationally hyperbolic, and is bounded from below by the growth of the fundamental group of $M$. In the case that all geodesics of $g$ are closed, we conclude that the slow volume growth of every symplectomorphism in the symplectic isotopy class of the Dehn--Seidel twist is at least 1, completing the main result of \cite{FS:GAFA}. The proofs use the Lagrangian Floer homology of $T^*M$ and the Abbondandolo--Schwarz isomorphism from this homology to the homology of the based loop space of $M$.

Energy capacity inequalities via an action selector

An action selector associates, in a suitable way, to each compactly supported Hamiltonian on a symplectic manifold an action value of the Hamiltonian. Action selectors are known to exist for a broad class of symplectic manifolds. We show how the existence of an action selector leads to sharp energy capacity inequalities between the Gromov width, the Hofer--Zehnder capacity, and the displacement energy. We also obtain sharp lower bounds for the smallest action of a closed characteristic on contact type hypersurfaces.

Slow entropy and symplectomorphisms of cotangent bundles

We consider an entropy-type invariant which measures the polynomial volume growth of submanifolds under the iterates of a map, and we establish sharp uniform lower bounds of this invariant for the following classes of symplectomorphisms of cotangent bundles over a compact base: 1) non-identical compactly supported symplectomorphisms which are symplectically isotopic to the identity, 2) symplectomorphisms generated by classical Hamiltonian functions, 3) Dehn twist like symplectomorphisms over compact rank one symmetric spaces.

Applications of Hofer's geometry to Hamiltonian dynamics

We prove the following three results in Hamiltonian dynamics. 1. The Weinstein conjecture holds true for every displaceable hypersurface of contact type. 2. Every magnetic flow on a closed Riemannian manifold has contractible closed orbits for a dense set of small energies. 3. Every closed Lagrangian submanifold of an arbitrary symplectic manifold whose fundamental group injects and which admits a Riemannian metric without closed geodesics has the intersection property.

On a question of Dusa McDuff

Consider the $2n$-dimensional closed ball $B$ of radius 1 in the $2n$-dimensional symplectic cylinder $Z = D \times R^{2n-2}$ over the closed disc $D$ of radius 1. We construct for each $ε>0$ a Hamiltonian deformation $ϕ$ of $B$ in $Z$ of energy less than $ε$ such that the area of each intersection of $ϕ(B)$ with the disc $D \times \{x\}$, $x \in R^{2n-2}$, is less than $ε$.

Volume preserving embeddings of open subsets of $R^n$ into manifolds

We consider a connected smooth $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ endowed with a volume form $Ω$, and we show that an open subset $U$ of $R^n$ of Lebesgue measure $\Vol (U)$ embeds into $M$ by a smooth volume preserving embedding whenever the volume condition $\Vol (U) \le \Vol (M,Ω)$ is met.

On symplectic folding

We study the rigidity and flexibility of symplectic embeddings of simple shapes. It is first proved that under the condition $r_n^2 \le 2 r_1^2$ the symplectic ellipsoid $E(r_1, ..., r_n)$ with radii $r_1 \le ... \le r_n$ does not embed in a ball of radius strictly smaller than $r_n$. We then use symplectic folding to see that this condition is sharp and to construct some nearly optimal embeddings of ellipsoids and polydiscs into balls and cubes. It is finally shown that any connected symplectic manifold of finite volume may be asymptotically filled with skinny ellipsoids or polydiscs.
