PIC1 pinched manifolds are flat or compact

Hamilton's pinching conjecture, that three-dimensional complete non-compact manifolds with pinched Ricci curvature are flat, has recently been resolved using Ricci flow. In this paper we prove a direct analogue of that result in all dimensions. In order to do so we develop a lifting technique that allows us to handle manifolds that are collapsed at infinity. This new method also gives an alternative way of handling collapsed manifolds in the known three-dimensional case. As part of this approach, we prove a Ricci flow curvature estimate of a type that would normally be derived from the Harnack inequality, but without requiring the strong curvature positivity hypothesis demanded by Harnack. We give an improved gap theorem as a further application.

Revisiting generic mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$

Bamler--Kleiner recently proved a multiplicity-one theorem for mean curvature flow in R^3 and combined it with the authors' work on generic mean curvature flows to fully resolve Huisken's genericity conjecture. In this paper we show that a short density-drop theorem plus the Bamler--Kleiner multiplicity-one theorem for tangent flows at the first nongeneric singular time suffice to resolve Huisken's conjecture -- without relying on the strict genus drop theorem for one-sided ancient flows previously established by the authors.

Generic regularity for minimizing hypersurfaces in dimension 11

We prove that area-minimizing hypersurfaces are generically smooth in ambient dimension $11$ in the context of the Plateau problem and of area minimization in integral homology. For higher ambient dimensions, $n+1 \geq 12$, we prove in the same two contexts that area-minimizing hypersurfaces have at most an $n-10-ε_n$ dimensional singular set after an arbitrarily $C^\infty$-small perturbation of the Plateau boundary or the ambient Riemannian metric, respectively.

Stability of neckpinch singularities

In this paper, we study the stability of neckpinch singularities. We show that if a mean curvature flow $\{M_t\}$ develops only finitely many neckpinch singularities at the first singular time, then the mean curvature flow starting at any sufficiently small perturbation of $M_0$ can also develop only neckpinch type singularities at the first singular time. We also show stability of nondegenerate neckpinch singularities in the above sense, which speaks in favor of stability of Type I singularities.

Initial stability estimates for Ricci flow and three dimensional Ricci-pinched manifolds

This paper investigates the question of stability for a class of Ricci flows which start at possibly non-smooth metric spaces. We show that if the initial metric space is Reifenberg and locally bi-Lipschitz to Euclidean space, then two solutions to the Ricci flow whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded from below and whose curvature is bounded by $c\cdot t^{-1}$ converge to one another at an exponential rate once they have been appropriately gauged. As an application, we show that smooth three dimensional, complete, uniformly Ricci-pinched Riemannian manifolds with bounded curvature are either compact or flat, thus confirming a conjecture of Hamilton and Lott.

Mean curvature flow with generic low-entropy initial data II

We prove that the mean curvature flow of a generic closed embedded hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^4$ or $\mathbb{R}^5$ with entropy $\leq 2$, or with entropy $\leq λ(\mathbb{S}^1)$ if in $\mathbb{R}^6$, encounters only generic singularities.

Mean Curvature Flow from Conical Singularities

We prove Ilmanen's resolution of point singularities conjecture by establishing short-time smoothness of the level set flow of a smooth hypersurface with isolated conical singularities. This shows how the mean curvature flow evolves through asymptotically conical singularities. Precisely, we prove that the level set flow of a smooth hypersurface $M^n\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $2\leq n\leq 6$, with an isolated conical singularity is modeled on the level set flow of the cone. In particular, the flow fattens (instantaneously) if and only if the level set flow of the cone fattens.

Improved generic regularity of codimension-1 minimizing integral currents

Let $Γ$ be a smooth, closed, oriented, $(n-1)$-dimensional submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We show that there exist arbitrarily small perturbations $Γ'$ of $Γ$ with the property that minimizing integral $n$-currents with boundary $Γ'$ are smooth away from a set of Hausdorff dimension $\leq n-9-\varepsilon_n$, where $\varepsilon_n \in (0, 1]$ is a dimensional constant. This improves on our previous result (where we proved generic smoothness of minimizers in $9$ and $10$ ambient dimensions). The key ingredients developed here are a new method to estimate the full singular set of the foliation by minimizers and a proof of superlinear decay of closeness (near singular points) that holds even across non-conical scales.

Mean curvature flow with generic initial data

We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.

On the Hamilton-Lott conjecture in higher dimensions

We study $n$-dimensional Ricci flows with non-negative Ricci curvature where the curvature is pointwise controlled by the scalar curvature and bounded by $C/t$, starting at metric cones which are Reifenberg outside the tip. We show that any such flow behaves like a self-similar solution up to an exponential error in time. As an application, we show that smooth $n$-dimensional complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds which are uniformly PIC1-pinched, with positive asymptotic volume ratio, are Euclidean. This confirms a higher dimensional version of a conjecture of Hamilton and Lott under the assumption of non-collapsing. It also yields a new and more direct proof of the original conjecture of Hamilton and Lott in three dimensions.

Ancient solutions and translators of Lagrangian mean curvature flow

Suppose that $\mathcal{M}$ is an almost calibrated, exact, ancient solution of Lagrangian mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We show that if $\mathcal{M}$ has a blow-down given by the static union of two Lagrangian subspaces with distinct Lagrangian angles that intersect along a line, then $\mathcal{M}$ is a translator. In particular in $\mathbb{C}^2$, all almost calibrated, exact, ancient solutions of Lagrangian mean curvature flow with entropy less than 3 are special Lagrangian, a union of planes, or translators.

A short proof of Allard's and Brakke's regularity theorems

We give new short proofs of Allard's regularity theorem for varifolds with bounded first variation and Brakke's regularity theorem for integral Brakke flows with bounded forcing. They are based on a decay of flatness, following from weighted versions of the respective monotonicity formulas, together with a characterization of non-homogeneous blow-ups using the viscosity approach introduced by Savin.

Huisken-Yau-type uniqueness for area-constrained Willmore spheres

Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian $3$-manifold that is asymptotic to Schwarzschild. We study the existence of large area-constrained Willmore spheres $Σ\subset M$ with non-negative Hawking mass and inner radius $ρ$ dominated by the area radius $λ$. If the scalar curvature of $(M,g)$ is non-negative, we show that no such surfaces with $\log λ\ll ρ$ exist. This answers a question of G. Huisken.

Mean curvature flow with generic low-entropy initial data

We prove that sufficiently low-entropy closed hypersurfaces can be perturbed so that their mean curvature flow encounters only spherical and cylindrical singularities. Our theorem applies to all closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with entropy $\leq 2$ and to all closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with entropy $\leq λ(\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2)$. When combined with recent work of Daniels-Holgate, this strengthens Bernstein-Wang's low-entropy Schoenflies-type theorem by relaxing the entropy bound to $λ(\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2)$. Our techniques, based on a novel density drop argument, also lead to a new proof of generic regularity result for area-minimizing hypersurfaces in eight dimensions (due to Hardt-Simon and Smale).

Mean curvature flow with generic initial data II

We show that the mean curvature flow of a generic closed surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ avoids multiplicity one tangent flows that are not round spheres/cylinders. In particular, we show that any non-cylindrical self-shrinker with a cylindrical end cannot arise generically.

Neck pinches along the Lagrangian mean curvature flow of surfaces

Let $L_t$ be a zero Maslov, rational Lagrangian mean curvature flow in a compact Calabi-Yau surface, and suppose that at the first singular time a tangent flow is given by the static union of two transverse planes. We show that in this case the tangent flow is unique, and that the flow can be continued past the singularity as an immersed, smooth, zero Maslov, rational Lagrangian mean curvature flow. Furthermore, if $L_0$ is a sphere that is stable in the sense of Thomas-Yau, then such a singularity cannot form.
