Instrumenting a Lake as a Wide-Field Gamma-ray Detector

Ground-level particle detection has recently emerged as an extremely powerful approach to TeV-PeV gamma-ray astronomy. The most successful observatories of this type, HAWC and LHAASO, utilise water-Cherenkov based detector units, housed in tanks or buildings. Here we explore the possibility of deploying water-Cherenkov detector units directly in to a natural or artificial lake. Possible advantages include reduced cost and improved performance due to better shielding. The lake concept has been developed as an option for the future Southern Wide-view Gamma-ray Observatory, and is now under consideration for a possible future extension of the observatory, beyond its recently selected land site. We present results from prototypes operated in a custom built facility, and concepts for full-scale array deployment and long-term operation.

A Systematic Assessment of Data Volume Reduction for IACTs

High energy cosmic-rays generate air showers when they enter Earth's atmosphere. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy is possible using either direct detection of shower particles at mountain altitudes, or with arrays of imaging air-Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Advances in the technique and larger collection areas have increased the rate at which air-shower events can be captured, and the amount of data produced by modern high-time-resolution Cherenkov cameras. Therefore, Data Volume Reduction (DVR) has become critical for such telescope arrays, ensuring that only useful information is stored long-term. Given the vast amount of raw data, owing to the highest resolution and sensitivity, the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will need robust data reduction strategies to ensure efficient handling and analysis. The CTAO data rates needs be reduced from hundreds of Petabytes (PB) per year to a few PB/year. This paper presents algorithms tailored for CTAO but also applicable for other arrays, focusing on selecting pixels likely to contain shower light. It describes and evaluates multiple algorithms based on their signal efficiency, noise rejection, and shower reconstruction. With a focus on a time-based clustering algorithm which demonstrates a notable enhancement in the retention of low-level signal pixels. Moreover, the robustness is assessed under different observing conditions, including detector defects. Through testing and analysis, it is shown that these algorithms offer promising solutions for efficient volume reduction in CTAO, addressing the challenges posed by the array's very large data volume and ensuring reliable data storage amidst varying observational conditions and hardware issues.

A Double Layered Water Cherenkov Detector Array for Gamma-Ray Astronomy

Ground-level particle detection is now a well-established approach to TeV gamma-ray astronomy. Detection of Cherenkov light produced in water-filled detection units is a proven and cost-effective method. Here we discuss the optimization of the units towards the future Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO). In this context, we investigate a new type of configuration in which each water Cherenkov detector (WCD) unit in the array comprises two chambers with black or reflective walls and a single photomultiplier tube (PMT) in each chamber. We find that this is a cost-effective approach that improves the performance of the WCD array with respect to current approaches. A shallow lower chamber with a PMT facing downwards enables muon tagging and the identification of hadron-induced air showers, which are the primary source of background in gamma-ray astronomy. We investigate how gamma/hadron separation power and achievable angular resolution depend on the geometry and wall reflectivity of the detector units in this configuration. We find that excellent angular resolution, background rejection power and low-energy response are achievable in this double-layer configuration, with the aid of reflective surfaces in both chambers.

Performance of the New FlashCam-based Camera in the 28\,m Telescope of H.E.S.S

In October 2019, the central 28 m telescope of the H.E.S.S. experiment has been upgraded with a new camera. The camera is based on the FlashCam design which has been developed in view of a possible future implementation in the Medium-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), with emphasis on cost and performance optimization and on reliability. The fully digital design of the trigger and readout system makes it possible to operate the camera at high event rates and to precisely adjust and understand the trigger system. The novel design of the front-end electronics achieves a dynamic range of over 3,000 photoelectrons with only one electronics readout circuit per pixel. Here we report on the performance parameters of the camera obtained during the first year of operation in the field, including operational stability and optimization of calibration algorithms.

Science verification of the new FlashCam-based camera in the 28m telescope of H.E.S.S

In October 2019 the central 28m telescope of the H.E.S.S. experiment has been upgraded with a new camera. The camera is based on the FlashCam design which has been developed in view of a possible future implementation in the medium-sized telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). We report here on the results of the science verification program that has been performed after commissioning of the new camera, to show that the camera and software pipelines are working up to expectations.

Exact relations for quantum-mechanical few-body and many-body problems with short-range interactions in two and three dimensions

We derive relations between various observables for N particles with zero-range or short-range interactions, in continuous space or on a lattice, in two or three dimensions, in an arbitrary external potential. Some of our results generalise known relations between large-momentum behavior of the momentum distribution, short-distance behavior of the pair correlation function and of the one-body density matrix, derivative of the energy with respect to the scattering length or to time, and the norm of the regular part of the wavefunction; in the case of finite-range interactions, the interaction energy is also related to dE/da. The expression relating the energy to a functional of the momentum distribution is also generalised, and is found to break down for Efimov states with zero-range interactions, due to a subleading oscillating tail in the momentum distribution. We also obtain new expressions for the derivative of the energy of a universal state with respect to the effective range, the derivative of the energy of an efimovian state with respect to the three-body parameter, and the second order derivative of the energy with respect to the inverse (or the logarithm in the two-dimensional case) of the scattering length. The latter is negative at fixed entropy. We use exact relations to compute corrections to exactly solvable three-body problems and find agreement with available numerics. For the unitary gas, we compare exact relations to existing fixed-node Monte-Carlo data, and we test, with existing Quantum Monte Carlo results on different finite range models, our prediction that the leading deviation of the critical temperature from its zero range value is linear in the interaction effective range r_e with a model independent numerical coefficient.

Shifted-Action Expansion and Applicability of Dressed Diagrammatic Schemes

While bare diagrammatic series are merely Taylor expansions in powers of interaction strength, dressed diagrammatic series, built on fully or partially dressed lines and vertices, are usually constructed by reordering the bare diagrams, which is an a priori unjustified manipulation, and can even lead to convergence to an unphysical result [Kozik, Ferrero and Georges, PRL 114, 156402 (2015)]. Here we show that for a broad class of partially dressed diagrammatic schemes, there exists an action $S^{(ξ)}$ depending analytically on an auxiliary complex parameter $ξ$, such that the Taylor expansion in $ξ$ of correlation functions reproduces the original diagrammatic series. The resulting applicability conditions are similar to the bare case. For fully dressed skeleton diagrammatics, analyticity of $S^{(ξ)}$ is not granted, and we formulate a sufficient condition for converging to the correct result.

Skeleton series and multivaluedness of the self-energy functional in zero space-time dimensions

Recently, Kozik, Ferrero and Georges have discovered numerically that for a family of fundamental models of interacting fermions, the self-energy $Σ[G]$ is a multi-valued functional of the fully dressed single-particle propagator G, and that the skeleton diagrammatic series $Σ_{\rm bold}[G]$ converges to the wrong branch above a critical interaction strength. We consider the zero space-time dimensional case, where the same mathematical phenomena appear from elementary algebra. We also find a similar phenomenology for the fully bold formalism built on fully dressed single-particle propagator and pair propagator.

Number of closed-channel molecules in the BEC-BCS crossover

Using a two-channel model, we show that the number of closed channel molecules in a two-component Fermi gas close to a Feshbach resonance is directly related to the derivative of the energy of the gas with respect to the inverse scattering length. We extract this quantity from the fixed node Monte-Carlo equation of state and we compare to the number of closed channel molecules measured in the Rice experiment with lithium [Partridge et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 020404 (2005)]. We also discuss the effect of a difference between the trapping potentials seen by a closed-channel molecule and by an open-channel pair of atoms in terms of an effective position-dependent scattering length.

The unitary three-body problem in a trap

We consider either 3 spinless bosons or 3 equal mass spin-1/2 fermions, interacting via a short range potential of infinite scattering length and trapped in an isotropic harmonic potential. For a zero-range model, we obtain analytically the exact spectrum and eigenfunctions: for fermions all the states are universal; for bosons there is a coexistence of decoupled universal and efimovian states. All the universal states, even the bosonic ones, have a tiny 3-body loss rate. For a finite range model, we numerically find for bosons a coupling between zero angular momentum universal and efimovian states; the coupling is so weak that, for realistic values of the interaction range, these bosonic universal states remain long-lived and observable.
