Constraining RS Models by Future Flavor and Collider Measurements: A Snowmass Whitepaper

Randall-Sundrum models are models of quark flavor, because they explain the hierarchies in the quark masses and mixings in terms of order one localization parameters of extra dimensional wavefunctions. The same small numbers which generate the light quark masses suppress contributions to flavor violating tree level amplitudes. In this note we update universal constraints from electroweak precision parameters and demonstrate how future measurements of flavor violation in ultra rare decay channels of Kaons and B mesons will constrain the parameter space of this type of models. We show how collider signatures are correlated with these flavor measurements and compute projected limits for direct searches at the 14 TeV LHC run, a 14 TeV LHC luminosity upgrade, a 33 TeV LHC energy upgrade, and a potential 100 TeV machine. We further discuss the effects of a warped model of leptons in future measurements of lepton flavor violation.

Di-jet resonances at future hadron colliders: A Snowmass whitepaper

I investigate the sensitivity of future hadron colliders to di-jet resonances arising from Z' or coloron models. The projected discovery potential and exclusion limits for these resonances is presented in the coupling vs. mass plane, which highlights both the increased mass reach from higher energy machines as well as the improved coupling sensivity from larger luminosity.

Measuring CP Violation in $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ at Colliders

We investigate the LHC and Higgs Factory prospects for measuring the CP phase in the Higgs-tau-tau coupling. Currently this phase can be anywhere between 0 degrees (CP even) and 90 degrees (CP odd). A new, ideal observable is identified from an analytic calculation for the $τ^\pm \to ρ^\pmν\to π^\pm π^0 ν$ channel. It is demonstrated to have promising sensitivity at the LHC and superior sensitivity at the ILC compared to previous proposals. Our observable requires the reconstruction of the internal substructure of decaying taus but does not rely on measuring the impact parameter of tau decays. It is the first proposal for such a measurement at the LHC. For the 14 TeV LHC, we estimate that about 1 ab$^{-1}$ data can discriminate CP-even versus CP-odd at the $5σ$ level. With 3 ab$^{-1}$, the CP phase should be measurable to an accuracy of $\sim 11$ degrees. At an $e^+e^-$ Higgs Factory, we project that a 250 GeV run with 1 ab$^{-1}$ luminosity can measure the phase to $\sim 4.4$ degrees accuracy.

Effects from New Colored States and the Higgs Portal on Gluon Fusion and Higgs Decays

We study effects from new colored states and the Higgs portal on gluon fusion production. We isolate possible loop contributions from new colored scalars, fermions, and vectors, incorporating effects from Higgs portal-induced scalar mixing, leading to dramatic effects on gluon fusion and branching fractions. Higgs identification must generally allow for these effects, and using our results, possible tensions from fits to the Standard Model expectation can be relieved by inclusion of New Physics effects.

Compatibility of theta13 and the Type I Seesaw Model with A4 Symmetry

We derive formulae for neutrino masses and mixing angles in a type I seesaw framework with an underlying A4 flavor symmetry. In particular, the Majorana neutrino mass matrix includes contributions from an A4 triplet, 1, 1', and 1" flavon fields. Using these formulae, we constrain the general A4 parameter space using the updated global fits on neutrino mixing angles and mass squared differences, including results from the Daya Bay and RENO experiments, and we find predictive relations among the mixing parameters for certain choices of the triplet vacuum expectation value. In the normal hierarchy case, sizable deviation from maximal atmospheric mixing is predicted, and such deviation is strongly correlated with the value of theta13 in the range of ~ (8-10) degrees. On the other hand, such deviation is negligible and insensitive to theta13 in the inverted mass hierarchy case. We also show expectations for the Dirac CP phase resulting from the parameter scan. Future refined measurements of neutrino mixing angles will test these predicted correlations and potentially show evidence for particular triplet vev patterns.

Indirect Probes of the MSSM after the Higgs Discovery

We study the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with minimal flavor violation (MFV), imposing constraints from flavor physics observables and MSSM Higgs searches, in light of the recent discovery of a 125 GeV Higgs boson by ATLAS and CMS. We analyze the electroweak vacuum stability conditions to further restrict the MSSM parameter space. In addition, a connection to ultraviolet physics is shown via an implementation of renormalization group running, which determines the TeV-scale spectrum from a small set of minimal supergravity parameters. Finally, we investigate the impact from dark matter direct detection searches. Our work highlights the complementarity of collider, flavor and dark matter probes in exploring the MSSM, and shows that even in a MFV framework, flavor observables constrain the MSSM parameter space well beyond the current reach of direct SUSY particle searches.

New Physics Models of Direct CP Violation in Charm Decays

In view of the recent LHCb measurement of Delta A_CP, the difference between the time-integrated CP asymmetries in D --> K+K- and D --> pi+pi- decays, we perform a comparative study of the possible impact of New Physics degrees of freedom on the direct CP asymmetries in singly Cabibbo suppressed D meson decays. We systematically discuss scenarios with a minimal set of new degrees of freedom that have renormalizable couplings to the SM particles and that are heavy enough such that their effects on the D meson decays can be described by local operators. We take into account both constraints from low energy flavor observables, in particular D0-D0bar mixing, and from direct searches. While models that explain the large measured value for Delta A_CP with chirally enhanced chromomagnetic penguins are least constrained, we identify a few viable models that contribute to the D meson decays at tree level or through loop induced QCD penguins. We emphasize that such models motivate direct searches at the LHC.

R-symmetry Matching In SUSY Breaking Models

Low energy descriptions of metastable supersymmetry breaking models often possess an accidental R-symmetry. Viable phenomenological applications of this class of models require R-symmetry to be broken in the ground state. This can be achieved in O'Raifeartaigh-like models where some of the chiral superfields carry negative R-charges. In this paper we consider UV completions of this class of models and formulate necessary conditions that they must satisfy. We show that the R-symmetry of the IR description can be traced to an anomalous or anomaly-free R-symmetry of the UV theory and discuss several representative examples.

A New Method for Resolving Combinatorial Ambiguities at Hadron Colliders

We present a new method for resolving combinatorial ambiguities that arise in multi-particle decay chains at hadron colliders where the assignment of visible particles to the different decay chains has ambiguities. Our method, based on selection cuts favoring high transverse momentum and low invariant mass pairings, is shown to be significantly superior to the more traditional hemisphere method for a large class of decay chains, producing an increase in signal retention of up to a factor of 2. This new method can thus greatly reduce the combinatorial ambiguities of decay chain assignments.

Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.

A Z' Model for the CDF Dijet Anomaly

We adopt a bottom-up approach to constructing a new physics model to explain the CDF excess seen in dijets with an associated lepton and missing transverse energy. We find that the 145 GeV broad feature seen by CDF in the dijet invariant mass distribution can be explained by a Z' boson with a mass of 145 GeV that couples only to first generation quarks. After dijet resonance constraints are considered, a sizeable region of the parameter space favored by the CDF anomaly remains viable.

A Viable Randall-Sundrum Model for Quarks and Leptons with T' Family Symmetry

We propose a Randall-Sundrum model with a bulk family symmetry based on the double tetrahedral group, T', which generates the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern and a realistic CKM matrix, including CP violation. Unlike 4D models where the generation of mass hierarchy requires additional symmetry, the warped geometry naturally gives rise to the fermion mass hierarchy through wavefunction localization. The T' symmetry forbids tree-level flavor changing neutral currents in both the quark and lepton sectors, as different generations of fermions are unified into multiplets of T'. This results in a low first KK mass scale and thus the model can be tested at collider experiments.

Measuring Slepton Masses and Mixings at the LHC

Flavor physics may help us understand theories beyond the standard model. In the context of supersymmetry, if we can measure the masses and mixings of sleptons and squarks, we may learn something about supersymmetry and supersymmetry breaking. Here we consider a hybrid gauge-gravity supersymmetric model in which the observed masses and mixings of the standard model leptons are explained by a U(1) x U(1) flavor symmetry. In the supersymmetric sector, the charged sleptons have reasonably large flavor mixings, and the lightest is metastable. As a result, supersymmetric events are characterized not by missing energy, but by heavy metastable charged particles. Many supersymmetric events are therefore fully reconstructible, and we can reconstruct most of the charged sleptons by working up the long supersymmetric decay chains. We obtain promising results for both masses and mixings, and conclude that, given a favorable model, precise measurements at the LHC may help shed light not only on new physics, but also on the standard model flavor parameters.

SPICE: Simulation Package for Including Flavor in Collider Events

We describe SPICE: Simulation Package for Including Flavor in Collider Events. SPICE takes as input two ingredients: a standard flavor-conserving supersymmetric spectrum and a set of flavor-violating slepton mass parameters, both of which are specified at some high "mediation" scale. SPICE then combines these two ingredients to form a flavor-violating model, determines the resulting low-energy spectrum and branching ratios, and outputs HERWIG and SUSY LesHouches files, which may be used to generate collider events. The flavor-conserving model may be any of the standard supersymmetric models, including minimal supergravity, minimal gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, and anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking supplemented by a universal scalar mass. The flavor-violating contributions may be specified in a number of ways, from specifying charges of fields under horizontal symmetries to completely specifying all flavor-violating parameters. SPICE is fully documented and publicly available, and is intended to be a user-friendly aid in the study of flavor at the Large Hadron Collider and other future colliders.

A Viable Flavor Model for Quarks and Leptons in RS with T' Family Symmetry

We propose a Randall-Sundrum model with a bulk family symmetry based on the double tetrahedral group, T', which generates the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern and a realistic CKM matrix. The T' symmetry forbids tree-level flavor-changing-neutral-currents in both the quark and lepton sectors, as different generations of fermions are unified into multiplets of T'. This results in a low first KK mass scale and thus the model can be tested at collider experiments.

Three-Body Decays of Sleptons with General Flavor Violation and Left-Right Mixing

We determine the widths of three-body decays of sleptons, $\tilde{l}^- \to \tilde{l}^{\pm} l^- l^{\mp}, \tilde{l}^- ν\barν, \tilde{l}^- q \bar{q}$, in the presence of arbitrary slepton flavor violation and left-right mixing. These decays are important in scenarios in which the lightest supersymmetric particle is the gravitino, a generic possibility in models with gauge- and gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking. Three-body decays have been discussed previously assuming flavor conservation and left-right mixing in only the stau sector. Flavor violation and general left-right mixing open up many new decay channels, which provide new avenues for precision mass measurements and may play an essential role in solving the standard model flavor problem. We present results for toy models with two-generation mixing, and discuss the implementation of these results in SPICE, a program that simplifies collider event simulations of flavor-violating supersymmetric models.
