Eckhaus Instability in the Fourier-Domain Mode Locked Fiber Laser Cavity

High frequency fluctuation in the optical signal generated in Fourier-Domain Mode Locked fiber laser (FDML-FL), which is the major problem and degrades the laser performance, is not yet fully analyzed or studied. The basic theory which is causing this high frequency fluctuation is required to clearly understand its dynamics and to control it for various applications. In this letter, by analyzing the signal and system dynamics of FDML-FL, we theoretically demonstrate that the high frequency fluctuation is induced by the intrinsic instability of frequency offset of the signal in cavity with nonlinear gain and spectral filter. Unlike the instabilities observed in other laser cavities this instability is very unique to FDML-FL as the central frequency of the optical signal continuously shifts away from the center frequency of the filter due to the effects like dispersion and/or nonlinearity. This instability is none other than the Eckhaus instability reported and well studied in fluid dynamics governed by real Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Fraction of the X-ray selected AGNs with optical emission lines in galaxy groups

Compared with numerous X-ray dominant active galactic nuclei (AGNs) without emission-line signatures in their optical spectra, the X-ray selected AGNs with optical emission lines are probably still in the high-accretion phase of black hole growth. This paper presents an investigation on the fraction of these X-ray detected AGNs with optical emission-line spectra in 198 galaxy groups at $z<1$ in a rest frame 0.1-2.4 keV luminosity range 41.3 0.5$, most member AGNs are X-ray bright, optically dull, which results in a lower AGN fractions at higher redshifts. The AGN fraction in isolated fields also exhibits a rising trend with redshift, and the slope is consistent with that in groups. The environment of galaxy groups seems to make no difference in detection probability of the AGNs with emission lines. Additionally, a larger AGN fractions are found in poorer groups, which implies that the AGNs in poorer groups might still be in the high-accretion phase, whereas the AGN population in rich clusters is mostly in the low-accretion, X-ray dominant phase.

Edge states in dynamical superlattices

We address edge states and rich localization regimes available in the one-dimensional (1D) dynamically modulated superlattices, both theoretically and numerically. In contrast to conventional lattices with straight waveguides, the quasi-energy band of infinite modulated superlattice is periodic not only in the transverse Bloch momentum, but it also changes periodically with increase of the coupling strength between waveguides. Due to collapse of quasi-energy bands dynamical superlattices admit known dynamical localization effect. If, however, such a lattice is truncated, periodic longitudinal modulation leads to appearance of specific edge states that exist within certain periodically spaced intervals of coupling constants. We discuss unusual transport properties of such truncated superlattices and illustrate different excitation regimes and enhanced robustness of edge states in them, that is associated with topology of the quasi-energy band.

Doublet-triplet energy transfer dominated photon upconversion

Stable luminescent pi-radicals with doublet emission have aroused a growing interest for functional molecular materials. We have demonstrated a neutral pi-radical dye (4-N-carbazolyl-2,6-dichlorophenyl)bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)-methyl (TTM-1Cz) with remarkable doublet emission, which could be used as triplet sensitizer to initiate the photophysical process of triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion (TTA-UC). Dexter-like excited doublet-triplet energy transfer (DTET) was confirmed by theoretical calculation. A mixed solution of TTM-1Cz and aromatic emitters could ambidextrous upconvert red light to cyan light or green light = 532 nm) to blue light. This finding of DTET phenomena provides a new perspective in designing new triplet sensitizer for TTA-UC.

Full Stark Control of Polariton States on a Spin-Orbit Hypersphere

The orbital angular momentum and the polarisation of light are physical quantities widely investigated for classical and quantum information processing. In this work we propose to take advantage of strong light-matter coupling, circular-symmetric confinement, and transverse-electric transverse-magnetic splitting to exploit states where these two degrees of freedom are combined. To this end we develop a model based on a spin-orbit Poincaré hypersphere. Then we consider the example of semiconductor polariton systems and demonstrate full ultrafast Stark control of spin-orbit states. Moreover, by controlling states on three different spin-orbit spheres and switching from one sphere to another we demonstrate the control of different logic bits within one single physical system.

Deep Models for Engagement Assessment With Scarce Label Information

Task engagement is defined as loadings on energetic arousal (affect), task motivation, and concentration (cognition). It is usually challenging and expensive to label cognitive state data, and traditional computational models trained with limited label information for engagement assessment do not perform well because of overfitting. In this paper, we proposed two deep models (i.e., a deep classifier and a deep autoencoder) for engagement assessment with scarce label information. We recruited 15 pilots to conduct a 4-h flight simulation from Seattle to Chicago and recorded their electroencephalograph (EEG) signals during the simulation. Experts carefully examined the EEG signals and labeled 20 min of the EEG data for each pilot. The EEG signals were preprocessed and power spectral features were extracted. The deep models were pretrained by the unlabeled data and were fine-tuned by a different proportion of the labeled data (top 1%, 3%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) to learn new representations for engagement assessment. The models were then tested on the remaining labeled data. We compared performances of the new data representations with the original EEG features for engagement assessment. Experimental results show that the representations learned by the deep models yielded better accuracies for the six scenarios (77.09%, 80.45%, 83.32%, 85.74%, 85.78%, and 86.52%), based on different proportions of the labeled data for training, as compared with the corresponding accuracies (62.73%, 67.19%, 73.38%, 79.18%, 81.47%, and 84.92%) achieved by the original EEG features. Deep models are effective for engagement assessment especially when less label information was used for training.

Anomalous transport model study of chiral magnetic effects in heavy ion collisions

Using an anomalous transport model for massless quarks and antiquarks, we study the effect of a magnetic field on the elliptic flows of quarks and antiquarks in relativistic heavy ion collisions. With initial conditions from a blast wave model and assuming that the strong magnetic field produced in non-central heavy ion collisions can last for a sufficiently long time, we obtain an appreciable electric quadrupole moment in the transverse plane of a heavy ion collision. The electric quadrupole moment subsequently leads to a splitting between the elliptic flows of quarks and antiquarks. The slope of the charge asymmetry dependence of the elliptic flow difference between positively and negatively charged particles is positive, which is expected from the chiral magnetic wave formed in the produced QGP and observed in experiments at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, only if the Lorentz force acting on the charged particles is neglected and the quark-antiquark scattering is assumed to be dominated by the chirality changing channel.

Center-focus determination and limit cycles bifurcation for $p:q$ homogeneous weight singular point

The quasi-homogeneous (and in general non-homogeneous) polynomial differential systems have been studied from many different points of view. In this paper, Center-focus determination and limit cycles bifurcation for $p:q$ homogeneous weight singular point are investigated. Some prosperities of Successive function and focus values are discussed, furthermore, the method of computing focal values is given. As an example, center-focus determination and limit cycle bifurcation for $2:3$ homogeneous weight singular point are studied, three or five limit cycles in the neighborhood of origin can be obtained by different perturbations.

Spinodal instabilities of baryon-rich quark matter in heavy ion collisions

Using the test-particle method to solve the transport equation derived from the Nambu-Jona-Lasino (NJL) model, we study how phase separation occurs in an expanding quark matter like that in a heavy ion collision. To test our method, we first investigate the growth rates of unstable modes of quark matter in a static cubic box and find them to agree with the analytical results that were previously obtained using the linear response theory. In this case, we also find the higher-order scaled density moments to increase with time and saturate at values significantly larger than one, which corresponds to a uniform density distribution, after the phase separation. The skewness of the quark number event-by-event distribution in a small sub-volume of the system is also found to increase, but this feature disappears if the sub-volume is large. For the expanding quark matter, two cases are considered with one using a blast-wave model for the initial conditions and the other using initial conditions from a mulple-phase transport (AMPT) model. In both cases, we find the expansion of the quark matter is slowed down by the presence of a first-order phase transition. Also, density clumps appear in the system and the momentum distribution of partons becomes anisotropic , which can be characterized by large scaled density moments and non-vanishing anisotropic elliptic and quadrupolar flows, respectively. The large density fluctuations further lead to an enhancement in the dilepton yield. In the case with the AMPT initial conditions, the presence of a first-order phase transition also results in a narrower rapidity distribution of partons after their freeze out. These effects of density fluctuations can be regarded as possible signals for a first-order phase transition that occurs in the baryon-rich quark matter formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Achieving ultrahigh carrier mobility and photo-responsivity in solution-processed perovskite/carbon nanotubes phototransistors

Organolead trihalide perovskites have drawn substantial interest for applications in photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices due to their low processing cost and remarkable physical properties. However, perovskite thin films still suffer from low carrier mobility, limiting their device performance and application potential. Here we report that embedding single-walled carbon nanotubes into halide perovskite films can significantly enhance the hole and electron mobilities to record-high values of 595.3 and 108.7 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively. In the ambipolar phototransistors with such hybrid channels, photo-carriers generated in the light-absorbing perovskite matrix are transported by the carbon nanotubes, leading to ultrahigh detectivity of 6 * 1014 Jones and responsivity of 1 * 104 A W-1. We find that the perovskite precursor in dimethylformamide solution serve as an excellent stabilizer for the dispersion of carbon nanotubes, which potentially extend the scope of applications of perovskites in solution-processed functional composites. The unprecedented high performances underscore the perovskite/carbon nanotubes hybrids as an emerging class of functional materials in optoelectronic and other applications.

Large-gap quantum spin Hall state in functionalized dumbbell stanene

Two-dimensional dumbbell (DB) stanene has been proposed as a promising candidate material for realizing quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) by Tang et al [P. Tang, P. Chen, W. Cao, H. Huang, S. Cahangirov, L. Xian, Y. Xu, S. C. Zhang, W. Duan, A. Rubio. Phys. Rev. B, 90, 121408 (2014)]. However, the small bulk-gap limits its possible applications at room temperature. Based on first-principles calculations, we predict that its band gap can be enhanced to 148 meV under methyl-functionalization, which can be further tuned by applying lattice strain. The QSHE is confirmed by s-px,y band inversion, topological invariant Z2 = 1, and helical gapless edge within bulk band gap. Notably, the characteristic properties of edge states, such as the large Fermi velocity and Dirac cone, can be modulated by edge modification. The effects of substrates on topological properties are explored when it is grown on various substrates, like SiC, h-BN, and Bi2Te3 sheets. These findings provide significant guidance for future fabrication and realistic applications of QSHE based on stanene in spintronics.

Dominant itinerant ferromagnetism in Eu0.5Sr0.5CoO3: evidences from both critical analysis and Rhodes-Wohlfarth's criterion

The critical behaviors of ferromagnet Eu0.5Sr0.5CoO3 arround TC=140.5K have been comprehensively investigated by analyzing a series of isothermal magnetization M(H) curves. Both Modified Arrott plot and Kouvel-Fisher methods give nearly the same critical exponents, which scale nicely the M(H) curves into two different branches below and above TC. The exponents γ=1.044 and δ=3.06 demonstrate the relevance of mean-field characters for this material. The conclusion of mean-field behavior proves a dominant itinerant ferromagnetism (FM) due to a long range exchange interaction in the system. Meanwhile, by using Rhodes-Wohlfarth's criterion [P. Rhodes and E. P. Wohlfarth, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 273, 247 (1963)], it is further confirmed that the itinerant FM dominates in the system.

A kind of bifurcation of limit cycle from nilpotent critical point

In this paper, an interesting and new bifurcation phenomenon that limit cycles could be bifurcated from nilpotent node (focus) by changing its stability was investigated. It is different from lowing its multiplicity in order to get limit cycles. We prove that $n^2+n-1$ limit cycles could be bifurcated by this way for $2n+1$ degree system. Moreover, this upper bound could be reached. At last, we give two examples to show that $N(3)=1$ and $N(5)=5$.

Interplay between tightly focused excitation and ballistic propagation of polariton condensates in a ZnO microcavity

The formation and propagation of a polariton condensate under tightly focused excitation is investigated in a ZnO microcavity both experimentally and theoretically. 2D near-field and far-field images of the condensate are measured under quasi-continuous non-resonant excitation. The corresponding spatial profiles are compared to a model based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation under cylindrical geometry. This work allows to connect the experiments performed with a small excitation laser spot and the previous kinetic models of condensation in a 2D infinite microcavity, and to determine the relevant parameters of both the interaction and the relaxation between the reservoir and the condensate. Two main parameters are identified: the exciton-photon detuning through the polariton effective mass and the temperature, which determines the efficiency of the relaxation from the reservoir to the condensate.

Spinodal Instabilities of Baryon-Rich Quark-gluon Plasma in the PNJL Model

Using the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinia (PNJL) model, we study the spinodal instability of a baryon-rich quark-gluon plasma in the linear response theory. We find that the spinodal unstable region in the temperature and density plane shrinks with increasing wave number of the unstable mode and is also reduced if the effect of Polyakov loop is not included. In the small wave number or long wavelength limit, the spinodal boundaries in both cases of with and without the Polyakov loop coincide with those determined from the isothermal spinodal instability in the thermodynamic approach. Also, the vector interactions among quarks is found to suppress unstable modes of all wave numbers. Moreover, the growth rate of unstable modes initially increases with the wave number but is reduced when the wave number becomes large. Including the collisional effect from quark scattering via the linearized Boltzmann equation, we further find that it decreases the growth rate of unstable modes of all wave numbers. Relevance of these results to relativistic heavy ion collisions is discussed.

Triplet-Polaron Interaction Induced Upconversion from Triplet to Singlet: a New Way to Obtain Highly Efficient OLEDs

The triplet harvesting is a main challenge in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), due to the radiative decay of triplet is spin-forbidden. Here, we designed and synthesized two D-A type molecules, TPA-TAZ and TCP. The OLEDs based on them exhibit deep-blue emission and the singlet formation ratios are higher than the simple spin-statistics of 25 %. Specially, a TPA-TAZ-based OLED achieves a maximum EQE of 6.8 %, which is the largest value of the undoped OLEDs with CIE(y)< 0.06 (the EBU blue standard) up to date. Comprehensive experiments eliminate the triplet-harvesting processes of thermally activated delayed fluorescence and triplet-triplet annihilation. Instead, the triplet-polaron interaction induced upconversion from triplet to singlet through one-electron transfer mechanism is proposed, and proven by the magneto-current measurement and quantum chemistry computation. Our results may offer a new route to break through the 25 % upper limit of IQE of fluorescent OLEDs, especially, the deep-blue fluorescent OLEDs.

(Anti-)strangeness production in heavy-ion collisions

The production and dynamics of strange and antistrange hadrons in heavy-ion reactions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}} \approx$ 3 GeV to 200 GeV is analyzed within the Parton-Hadron-String-Dynamics (PHSD) transport model. The PHSD results for strange baryon and antibaryon production are roughly consistent with the experimental data starting from upper SPS energies. Nevertheless, hadronic final state flavor-exchange reactions are important for the actual abundances, in particular at large rapidities where hadronic dynamics, parton fragmentation and string decay dominate. A striking disagreement between the PHSD results and the available data persists, however, for bombarding energies below $\sqrt{s_{NN}} \approx$ 8 GeV where the strangeness production is significantly underestimated as in earlier HSD studies. This finding implies that the strangeness enhancement seen experimentally at FAIR/NICA energies cannot be attributed to a deconfinement phase transition or crossover but probably involves the approximate restoration of chiral symmetry in the hadronic phase.
