The application of compressive sampling to radio astronomy I: Deconvolution

Compressive sampling is a new paradigm for sampling, based on sparseness of signals or signal representations. It is much less restrictive than Nyquist-Shannon sampling theory and thus explains and systematises the widespread experience that methods such as the Högbom CLEAN can violate the Nyquist-Shannon sampling requirements. In this paper, a CS-based deconvolution method for extended sources is introduced. This method can reconstruct both point sources and extended sources (using the isotropic undecimated wavelet transform as a basis function for the reconstruction step). We compare this CS-based deconvolution method with two CLEAN-based deconvolution methods: the Högbom CLEAN and the multiscale CLEAN. This new method shows the best performance in deconvolving extended sources for both uniform and natural weighting of the sampled visibilities. Both visual and numerical results of the comparison are provided.

The application of compressive sampling to radio astronomy II: Faraday rotation measure synthesis

Faraday rotation measure (RM) synthesis is an important tool to study and analyze galactic and extra-galactic magnetic fields. Since there is a Fourier relation between the Faraday dispersion function and the polarized radio emission, full reconstruction of the dispersion function requires knowledge of the polarized radio emission at both positive and negative square wavelengths $λ^2$. However, one can only make observations for $λ^2 > 0$. Furthermore observations are possible only for a limited range of wavelengths. Thus reconstructing the Faraday dispersion function from these limited measurements is ill-conditioned. In this paper, we propose three new reconstruction algorithms for RM synthesis based upon compressive sensing/sampling (CS). These algorithms are designed to be appropriate for Faraday thin sources only, thick sources only, and mixed sources respectively. Both visual and numerical results show that the new RM synthesis methods provide superior reconstructions of both magnitude and phase information than RM-CLEAN

Multicolor Photometry of the Galaxies in Abell 1775: Substructures, Luminosity Functions, and Star-Formation Properties

An optical photometric observation in 15 bands was carried out for nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1775 by the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) multi-color system. Over 5000 sources' spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were obtained. Since this cluster has also been observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the BATC SEDs were combined with the SDSS five-band photometric data. Using the combined SEDs, 146 faint galaxies were selected as new member galaxies by the photometric redshift technique. Based on the positions, redshifts and 20-band SEDs of member galaxies, dynamical substructures and luminosity functions (LFs) of A1775 were investigated. The previous reported bimodal structure of A1775 has been confirmed: a poor subcluster with lower redshift, A1775A, is located ~14' southeast to the main concentration A1775B. After taking into account the new supplemented member galaxies, a new subcluster A1775C was found along the aligned direction of A1775A and A1775B. The different LF faint ends of the two subclusters indicate that A1775B is a more dynamically evolved system, while A1775A is still dynamically young. By the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code, the star- formation histories of the member galaxies were studied. The dependence of the mean stellar ages upon the Hubble type was confirmed, and the environmental effect on star-formation activities for galaxies in A1775B has been explored.

Investigation of the magnetic field effects on the electron mobility in tri-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum based light-emitting devices

We investigated the mganetic field effects (MFEs) on electron mobility in tri-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum based light-emitting devices by transient-electroluminescence method upon application of various offset voltages. It is found the rising edges of EL pulses are well overlapped and the falling edges of EL pulses are separated for the magnetic field on and off when Voffset=0 V and Voffset>Vturnon of the devices. The results suggest the bipolaron model and the triplet-polaron interaction model related to the carriers mobilities are not the dominant mechanisms to explain the MFEs under our experimental conditions, and the magnetic field affects the carriers recombination process is confirmed.

Direct measurement of the magnetic field effects on carrier mobilities and recombination in tri-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum based light-emitting diodes

The magnetic field effects on the carrier mobilities and recombination in tri-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum (Alq3) based light-emitting diodes have been measured by the method of transient electroluminescence. It is confirmed that the magnetic field has no effect on the electron and hole mobilities in Alq3 layers and can decrease the electron-hole recombination coefficient. The results imply that the dominant mechanism for the magnetic field effects in Alq3 based light-emitting diodes is the interconversion between singlet e-h pairs and triplet e-h pairs modulated by the magnetic field when the driving voltage is larger than the onset voltage of the electroluminescence.

Magnetic field switching in parallel quantum dots

We show that the Coulomb blockade in parallel dots pierced by magnetic flux $Φ$ completely blocks the resonant current for any value of $Φ$ except for integer multiples of the flux quantum $Φ_0$. This non-analytic (switching) dependence of the current on $Φ$ arises only when the dot states that carry the current are of the same energy. The time needed to reach the steady state, however, diverges when $Φ\to nΦ_0$.

Coulomb blockade double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer: giant fluctuations

Electron transport through two parallel quantum dots is a kind of solid-state realization of double-path interference. We demonstrate that the inter-dot Coulomb correlation and quantum coherence would result in strong current fluctuations with a divergent Fano factor at zero frequency. We also provide physical interpretation for this surprising result, which displays its generic feature and allows us to recover this phenomenon in more complicated systems.

Reduced dynamics with renormalization in solid-state charge qubit measurement

Quantum measurement will inevitably cause backaction on the measured system, resulting in the well known dephasing and relaxation. In this report, in the context of solid--state qubit measurement by a mesoscopic detector, we show that an alternative backaction known as renormalization is important under some circumstances. This effect is largely overlooked in the theory of quantum measurement.

Weak Measurement of Qubit Oscillations with Strong Response Detectors: Violation of the Fundamental Bound Imposed on Linear Detectors

We investigate the continuous weak measurement of a solid-state qubit by single electron transistors in nonlinear response regime. It is found that the signal-to-noise ratio can violate the universal upper bound imposed quantum mechanically to any linear response detectors. We understand the violation by means of the cross-correlation of the detector currents.

Challenging More Updates: Towards Anonymous Re-publication of Fully Dynamic Datasets

Most existing anonymization work has been done on static datasets, which have no update and need only one-time publication. Recent studies consider anonymizing dynamic datasets with external updates: the datasets are updated with record insertions and/or deletions. This paper addresses a new problem: anonymous re-publication of datasets with internal updates, where the attribute values of each record are dynamically updated. This is an important and challenging problem for attribute values of records are updating frequently in practice and existing methods are unable to deal with such a situation. We initiate a formal study of anonymous re-publication of dynamic datasets with internal updates, and show the invalidation of existing methods. We introduce theoretical definition and analysis of dynamic datasets, and present a general privacy disclosure framework that is applicable to all anonymous re-publication problems. We propose a new counterfeited generalization principle alled m-Distinct to effectively anonymize datasets with both external updates and internal updates. We also develop an algorithm to generalize datasets to meet m-Distinct. The experiments conducted on real-world data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Full counting statistics of transport through two-channel Coulomb blockade systems

A mesoscopic Coulomb blockade system with two identical transport channels is studied in terms of full counting statistics. It is found that the average current cannot distinguish the quantum constructive interference from the classical non-interference, but the shot noise and skewness are more sensitive to the nature of quantum mechanical interference and can fulfill that task. The interesting super-Poisson shot noise is found and is demonstrated as a consequence of constructive interference, which induces an effective system with fast-and-slow transport channels. Dephasing effects on the counting statistics are carried out to display the continuous transition from quantum interfering to non-interfering transports.
