Optical Black-hole Analog Created by Topological Phase Transition with a Long-lived Horizon

Hawking radiation, a manifestation of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, has stimulated extensive theoretical and experimental studies of various black-hole (BH) analogs. However, an undisputed confirmation of Hawking radiation remains elusive. One challenge is BH analog structures with long-lived horizons are difficult to achieve. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a new type of optical BH analog based on light cone evolution associated with topological phase transition of Dirac cones. The transition from a type-II to type-I Dirac/Weyl cone creates an analogous curved spacetime that crosses a type-III Dirac/Weyl cone, which affords a stationary configuration of long-lived event horizon. Photons tunneling through the horizon emit a spectrum of Hawking radiation. As an example, we design a laboratory version in an inhomogeneous two-dimensional graphyne-like topological photonic lattice with a Hawking temperature of 0.14 mK. Understanding Hawking-like radiation in this unique topological BH is not only of fundamental interest in its own right but may also provide new hints to gravitational physics.

Asynchronous Distributed Voltage Control in Active Distribution Networks

With the explosion of distributed energy resources (DERs), voltage regulation in distribution networks has been facing a great challenge. This paper derives an asynchronous distributed voltage control strategy based on the partial primal-dual gradient algorithm, where both active and reactive controllable power of DERs are considered. Different types of asynchrony due to imperfect communication or practical limits, such as random time delays and non-identical sampling/control rates, are fitted into a unified analytic framework. The asynchronous algorithm is then converted into a fixed-point problem by employing the operator splitting method, which leads to a convergence proof with mild conditions. Moreover, an online implementation method is provided to make the controller adjustable to time-varying environments. Finally, numerical experiments are carried out on a rudimentary 8-bus system and the IEEE-123 distribution network to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

MemeFaceGenerator: Adversarial Synthesis of Chinese Meme-face from Natural Sentences

Chinese meme-face is a special kind of internet subculture widely spread in Chinese Social Community Networks. It usually consists of a template image modified by some amusing details and a text caption. In this paper, we present MemeFaceGenerator, a Generative Adversarial Network with the attention module and template information as supplementary signals, to automatically generate meme-faces from text inputs. We also develop a web service as system demonstration of meme-face synthesis. MemeFaceGenerator has been shown to be capable of generating high-quality meme-faces from random text inputs.

3D Face Modeling From Diverse Raw Scan Data

Traditional 3D face models learn a latent representation of faces using linear subspaces from limited scans of a single database. The main roadblock of building a large-scale face model from diverse 3D databases lies in the lack of dense correspondence among raw scans. To address these problems, this paper proposes an innovative framework to jointly learn a nonlinear face model from a diverse set of raw 3D scan databases and establish dense point-to-point correspondence among their scans. Specifically, by treating input scans as unorganized point clouds, we explore the use of PointNet architectures for converting point clouds to identity and expression feature representations, from which the decoder networks recover their 3D face shapes. Further, we propose a weakly supervised learning approach that does not require correspondence label for the scans. We demonstrate the superior dense correspondence and representation power of our proposed method, and its contribution to single-image 3D face reconstruction.

Toward Distributed Stability Analytics for Power Systems with Heterogeneous Bus Dynamics

The stability issue emerges as a growing number of diverse power apparatus connecting to the power system. The stability analysis for such power systems is required to adapt to heterogeneity and scalability. This paper derives a local passivity index condition that guarantees the system-wide stability for lossless power systems with interconnected, nonlinear, heterogeneous bus dynamics. Our condition requires each bus dynamics to be output feedback passive with a large enough index w.r.t. a special supply rate. This condition fits for numerous existing models since it only constrains the input-output property rather than the detailed dynamics. Furthermore, for three typical examples of bus dynamics in power systems, we show that this condition can be reached via proper control designs. Simulations on a 3-bus heterogeneous power system verify our results in both lossless and lossy cases. The conservativeness of our condition is also demonstrated, as well as the impact on transient stability. It shows that our condition is quite tight and a larger index benefits transient stability.

Towards Distributed Stability Analytics of Dynamic Power Systems: A Phasor-Circuit Theory Perspective

With the rapid development of renewable and distributed energies, the underlying dynamics of power systems are no longer dominated by large synchronous generators, but by numerous dynamic components with heterogeneous characteristics. In such a situation, the traditional stability analysis method may fail due to the challenges of heterogeneity and scalability. In this paper, we handle this issue by fundamental circuit theory. Inspired by the work of Brayton and Moser in the nonlinear RLC circuit, we extend the concept of the voltage potential to phasor circuits and offer new results into the distributed stability analytics in power systems. We show that under certain distributed passivity-like conditions the system-wide stability can be ensured. The simulation of a 3-bus system is also provided to verify our results.

Data-driven subtraction of anisotropic flows in jet-like correlation studies in heavy-ion collisions

Measurements of two-particle azimuthal angle correlations are a useful tool to study the distribution of jet energy loss, however, they are complicated because of the significant anisotropic flow background. We devise a data-driven method for subtracting anisotropic flow background in jet-like correlation analysis. We first require a large recoil momentum ($P_x$) within a given pseudo-rapidity ($η$) range from a high-transverse momentum particle to enhance in-acceptance population of away-side jet-like correlations. Then we take the difference of two-particle correlations in the close-region and far-region with respect to the $η$ region of $P_x$ to subtract the anisotropic flow background. We use a toy model which contains only anisotropic flow and PYTHIA8 which have jets to demonstrate the validity of our data-driven method. The results indicate that the data-driven method can subtract anisotropic flow effectively.

Buy or Sell? Energy Sharing of Prosumers on Constrained Networks

The advent of intelligent agents who produce and consume energy by themselves has led the smart grid into the era of "prosumer", offering the energy system and customers a unique opportunity to revaluate/trade their spot energy via a sharing initiative. To this end, designing an appropriate sharing mechanism is an issue with crucial importance and has captured great attention. This paper addresses the prosumers' demand response problem via energy sharing. Under a general supply-demand function bidding scheme, a sharing market clearing procedure considering network constraints is proposed, which gives rise to a generalized Nash game. The existence and uniqueness of market equilibrium are proved in non-congested cases. When congestion occurs, infinitely much equilibrium may exist because the strategy spaces of prosumers are correlated. A price-regulation procedure is introduced in the sharing mechanism, which outcomes a unique equilibrium that is fair to all participants. Properties of the improved sharing mechanism, including the individual rational behaviors of prosumers and the components of sharing price, are revealed. When the number of prosumers increases, the proposed sharing mechanism approaches social optimum. Even with fixed number of resources, introducing competition can result in a decreasing social cost. Illustrative examples validate the theoretical results and provide more insights for the energy sharing research.

Dimensional Crossover of Topological Edge States in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model

Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on two-dimensional square lattice exhibits a topological phase transition, which is related to the Zak phase determined by bulk band topology. The strong modulation of electron hopping causes nontrivial charge polarization even in the presence of inversion symmetry. The energy band structures and topological edge states have been calculated numerically in previous studies. Here, however, full energy spectrum and explicit form of wave functions for two-dimensional bulk and one-dimensional ribbon geometries of SSH model are analytically derived using wave mechanics approach. Explicit analytic representations of wave functions provide the information of parity for each subband, localization length and critical point of topological phase transition in SSH ribbon. It is also shown that the dimensional crossover of topological transition point for SSH model from one to two-dimension.

Probabilistic Structure Learning for EEG/MEG Source Imaging with Hierarchical Graph Prior

Brain source imaging is an important method for noninvasively characterizing brain activity using Electroencephalogram (EEG) or Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings. Traditional EEG/MEG Source Imaging (ESI) methods usually assume that either source activity at different time points is unrelated, or that similar spatiotemporal patterns exist across an entire study period. The former assumption makes ESI analyses sensitive to noise, while the latter renders ESI analyses unable to account for time-varying patterns of activity. To effectively deal with noise while maintaining flexibility and continuity among brain activation patterns, we propose a novel probabilistic ESI model based on a hierarchical graph prior. Under our method, a spanning tree constraint ensures that activity patterns have spatiotemporal continuity. An efficient algorithm based on alternating convex search is presented to solve the proposed model and is provably convergent. Comprehensive numerical studies using synthetic data on a real brain model are conducted under different levels of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from both sensor and source spaces. We also examine the EEG/MEG data in a real application, in which our ESI reconstructions are neurologically plausible. All the results demonstrate significant improvements of the proposed algorithm over the benchmark methods in terms of source localization performance, especially at high noise levels.

Weyl points created by a three-dimensional flat band

Following the discovery of topological insulators (TIs), topological Dirac/Weyl semimetal has attracted much recent interest. A prevailing mechanism for the formation of Weyl points is by breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or spatial inversion symmetry of a Dirac point. Here we demonstrate a generic formation mechanism for Weyl points by breaking TRS of a three-dimensional (3D) TI featured with highly degenerate 3D flat bands (FBs). It is in direct contrast to the conventional view that breaking TRS of a 2D/3D TI leads to a Chern insulator exhibiting quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on a tight-binding model of pyrochlore lattice, we show that this unusual 3D-FB-enabled Weyl state may contain only a minimum of two Weyl points. Furthermore, using first-principles calculations, we identify this Weyl state in a real material Sn$_2$Nb$_2$O$_7$. The main features of the resulting Weyl points are analyzed with respect to symmetry, topological invariant and surface state. Our finding sheds new light on our fundamental understanding of topological physics and significantly extends the scope of Weyl semimetals to attract immediate experimental interest.

Topological superconducting phase in high-Tc superconductor MgB2 with Dirac-nodal-line fermions

Topological superconductors are an intriguing and elusive quantum phase, characterized by topologically protected gapless surface/edge states residing in a bulk superconducting gap, which hosts Majorana fermions. Unfortunately, all currently known topological superconductors have a very low transition temperature, limiting experimental measurements of Majorana fermions. Here we discover the existence of a topological Dirac-nodal-line state in a well-known conventional high-temperature superconductor, MgB2. First-principles calculations show that the Dirac-nodal-line structure exhibits a unique one-dimensional dispersive Dirac-nodal line, protected by both spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetry, which connects the electron and hole Dirac states. Most importantly, we show that the topological superconducting phase can be realized with a conventional s-wave superconducting gap, evidenced by the topological edge mode of the MgB2 thin films showing chiral edge states. Our discovery may enable the experimental measurement of Majorana fermions at high temperature.

Asynchronous Distributed Power Control of Multi-Microgrid Systems Based on the Operator Splitting Approach

Forming (hybrid) AC/DC microgrids (MGs) has become a promising manner for the interconnection of various kinds of distributed generators that are inherently AC or DC electric sources. This paper addresses the distributed asynchronous power control problem of hybrid microgrids, considering imperfect communication due to non-identical sampling rates and communication delays. To this end, we first formulate the optimal power control problem of MGs and devise a synchronous algorithm. Then, we analyze the impact of asynchrony on optimal power control and propose an asynchronous iteration algorithm based on the synchronous version. By introducing a random clock at each iteration, different types of asynchrony are fitted into a unified framework, where the asynchronous algorithm is converted into a fixed-point problem based on the operator splitting method, leading to a convergence proof. We further provide an upper bound estimation of the time delay in the communication. Moreover, the real-time implementation of the proposed algorithm in both AC and DC MGs is introduced. By taking the power system as a solver, the controller is simplified by reducing one order and the power loss can be considered. Finally, a benchmark MG is utilized to verify the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed algorithm.

Fermionic analogue of black hole radiation with a super high Hawking temperature

Measurement of gravitational Hawking radiation of black hole (BH) is prohibitive because of an extremely low Hawking temperature (TH). Here we demonstrate a fermionic analog of BH with a super high TH ~ 3 K, which is several orders of magnitude higher than previous works. We propose that Floquet-Dirac states, formed in a periodically laser driven two-dimensional black phosphorous thin film, can be designed with a spatial gradient to mimic the "gravity" felt by fermionic quasiparticles as that for a Schwarzschild BH (SBH). Quantum tunneling of electrons from a type-II Dirac cone (inside BH) to a type-I Dirac cone (outside) emits a SBH-like Hawking radiation spectrum.

Orbital design of topological insulators from two-dimensional semiconductors

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted much recent attention because they exhibit various distinct intrinsic properties/functionalities, which are, however, usually not interchangeable. Interestingly, here we propose a generic approach to convert 2D semiconductors, which are amply abundant, to 2D topological insulators (TIs), which are less available, via selective atomic adsorption and strain engineering. The approach is underlined by an orbital design principle that involves introducing an extrinsic s-orbital state into the intrinsic sp-bands of a 2D semiconductor, so as to induce s-p band inversion for a TI phase, as demonstrated by tight-binding model analyses. Remarkably, based on first-principles calculations, we apply this approach to convert the semiconducting monolayer CuS and CuTe into a TI by adsorbing Na and K respectively with a proper s-level energy, and CuSe into a TI by adsorbing a mixture of Na and K with a tuned s-level energy or by adsorbing either Na or K on a strained CuSe with a tuned p-level valence band edge. Our findings open a new door to the discovery of TIs by a predictive materials design, beyond finding a preexisting 2D TI.

Electron-Nuclear Hyperfine Coupling in Quantum Kagome Antiferromagnets from First-Principles Calculation and a Reflection of the Defect Effect

The discovery of ideal spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets Herbertsmithite and Zn-doped Barlowite represents a breakthrough in the quest for quantum spin liquids (QSLs), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy plays a prominent role in revealing the quantum paramagnetism in these compounds. However, interpretation of NMR data that is often masked by defects can be controversial. Here, we show that the most significant interaction strength for NMR, i.e. the hyperfine coupling (HFC) strength, can be reasonably reproduced by first-principles calculations for these proposed QSLs. Applying this method to a supercell containing Cu-Zn defects enables us to map out the variation and distribution of HFC at different nuclear sites. This predictive power is expected to bridge the missing link in the analysis of the low-temperature NMR data.

Anomalous Dirac Plasmons in 1D Topological Electrides

Plasmon opens up the possibility to efficiently couple light and matter at sub-wavelength scales. In general, the plasmon frequency is dependent of carrier density. This dependency, however, renders fundamentally a weak plasmon intensity at low frequency, especially for Dirac plasmon (DP) widely studied in graphene. Here we demonstrate a new type of DP, excited by a Dirac nodal-surface state, which exhibits an anomalously density-independent frequency. Remarkably, we predict realization of anomalous DP (ADP) in 1D topological electrides, such as Ba3CrN3 and Sr3CrN3, by first-principles calculations. The ADPs in both systems have a density-independent frequency and high intensity, and their frequency can be tuned from terahertz to mid-infrared by changing the excitation direction. Furthermore, the intrinsic weak electron-phonon coupling of anionic electrons in electrides affords an added advantage of ultra-low phonon-assisted damping and hence a long lifetime of the ADPs. Our work paves the way to developing novel plasmonic and optoelectronic devices by combining topological physics with electride materials.

Towards High-fidelity Nonlinear 3D Face Morphable Model

Embedding 3D morphable basis functions into deep neural networks opens great potential for models with better representation power. However, to faithfully learn those models from an image collection, it requires strong regularization to overcome ambiguities involved in the learning process. This critically prevents us from learning high fidelity face models which are needed to represent face images in high level of details. To address this problem, this paper presents a novel approach to learn additional proxies as means to side-step strong regularizations, as well as, leverages to promote detailed shape/albedo. To ease the learning, we also propose to use a dual-pathway network, a carefully-designed architecture that brings a balance between global and local-based models. By improving the nonlinear 3D morphable model in both learning objective and network architecture, we present a model which is superior in capturing higher level of details than the linear or its precedent nonlinear counterparts. As a result, our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on 3D face reconstruction by solely optimizing latent representations.
