Quantum Spin Hall Effect and Spin Bott Index in a Quasicrystal Lattice

Despite the rapid progresses in the field of quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect, most of the QSH systems studied up to now are based on crystalline materials. Here we propose that the QSH effect can be realized in quasicrystal lattices (QLs). We show that the electronic topology of aperiodic and amorphous insulators can be characterized by a spin Bott index $B_s$. The nontrivial QSH state in a QL is identified by a nonzero spin Bott index $B_s=1$, associated with robust edge states and quantized conductance. We also map out a topological phase diagram in which the QSH state lies in between a normal insulator and a weak metal phase due to the unique wavefunctions of QLs. Our findings not only provide a better understanding of electronic properties of quasicrystals but also extend the search of QSH phase to aperiodic and amorphous materials that are experimentally feasible.

Pseudo Dirac Nodal Sphere: Unusual Electronic Structure and Material Realization

Topological semimetals (TSMs) in which conduction and valence bands cross at zero-dimensional (0D) Dirac nodal points (DNPs) or 1D Dirac nodal lines (DNLs), in 3D momentum space, have recently drawn much attention due to their exotic electronic properties. Here we generalize the TSM state further to a higher-symmetry and higher-dimensional pseudo Dirac nodal sphere (PDNS) state, with the band crossings forming a 2D closed sphere at the Fermi level. The PDNS state is characterized with a spherical backbone consisting of multiple crossing DNLs while band degeneracy in between the DNLs is approximately maintained by weak interactions. It exhibits some unique electronic properties and low-energy excitations, such as collective plasmons different from DNPs and DNLs. Based on crystalline symmetries, we theoretically demonstrate two possible types of PDNS states, and identify all the possible band crossings with pairs of 1D irreducible representations to form the PDNS states in 32 point groups. Importantly, we discover that strained MH3 (M= Y, Ho, Tb, Nd) and Si3N2 are materials candidates to realize these two types of PDNS states, respectively. As a high-symmetry-required state, the PDNS semimetal can be regarded as the "parent phase" for other topological gapped and gapless states.

Observation of Topological Surface State in High Temperature Superconductor MgB2

The hunt for the benchmark topological superconductor (TSc) has been an extremely active research subject in condensed matter research, with quite a few candidates identified or proposed. However, low transition temperatures (Tc) and/or strong sensitivity to disorder and dopant levels in known TSc candidates have greatly hampered progress in this field. Here, we use Angle-resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) to show the presence of Dirac Nodal Lines (DNLs) and the corresponding topological surface states (TSS's) on the [010] faces of the Tc=39K s-wave BCS superconductor MgB2. Not only is this nearly triple the current record of superconducting Tc among all candidate TSc's, but the nature of these DNL states should make them highly tolerant against disorder and inadvertent doping variations. This makes MgB2 a promising high temperature platform for the study of topological superconductivity.

An Adjustable Heat Conduction based KNN Approach for Session-based Recommendation

The KNN approach, which is widely used in recommender systems because of its efficiency, robustness and interpretability, is proposed for session-based recommendation recently and outperforms recurrent neural network models. It captures the most recent co-occurrence information of items by considering the interaction time. However, it neglects the co-occurrence information of items in the historical behavior which is interacted earlier and cannot discriminate the impact of items and sessions with different popularity. Due to these observations, this paper presents a new contextual KNN approach to address these issues for session-based recommendation. Specifically, a diffusion-based similarity method is proposed for considering the popularity of vertices in session-item bipartite network, and a candidate selection method is proposed to capture the items that are co-occurred with different historical clicked items in the same session efficiently. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our KNN approach over the state-of-the-art KNN approach for session-based recommendation on three benchmark datasets.

Beam energy dependence of squeeze-out effect on the directed and elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at high baryon density region

We present a detailed analysis of the beam energy dependence of the mechanisms for the generation of directed and elliptic flows in Au+Au collisions focusing on the role of hadronic rescattering and spectator shadowing within a microscopic transport model JAM with different equation of state. A systematic study of the beam energy dependence is performed for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.3 - 62.4$ GeV. The transition of the dynamical origin of the directed flow is observed. We find that the initial Glauber type nucleon-nucleon collisions generate negative $v_1$ for nucleons at midrapidity due to the presence of spectator matter, and this negative nucleon $v_1$ is turned to be positive by the meson-baryon interactions at the beam energy region of $\sqrt{s_{NN}} < 30$ GeV. In contrast, above 30 GeV there is no spectator shadowing at midrapidity, and initial nucleon-nucleon collisions do not generate directed flow, but subsequent rescatterings among produced particles generate negative $v_1$ for nucleons. It is demonstrated that negative pion-directed flows are mostly generated by the interaction with the spectator matter. It is also shown that the squeeze-out effect is largely suppressed in the case of softening, which leads to the enhancement of elliptic flow around $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5-7$ GeV. The elliptic flow at midrapidity above 10 GeV is not influenced by the squeeze-out due to spectator matter, while its effect is seen at the forward rapidity range of $y/y_\mathrm{c.m.}>0.5$, which decreases as beam energy increases.

Regularity and continuity of local Multilinear Maximal type operator

This paper will be devoted to study the regularity and continuity properties of the following local multilinear fractional type maximal operators, $$\mathfrak{M}_{α,Ω}(\vec{f})(x)=\sup\limits_{0<r<{\rm dist}(x,Ω^c)}\frac{r^α}{|B(x,r)|^m}\prod\limits_{i=1}^m\int_{B(x,r)}|f_i(y)|dy,\quad \hbox{for \ }0\leqα<mn,$$ where $Ω$ is a subdomain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $Ω^c=\mathbb{R}^n\backslashΩ$ and $B(x,r)$ is the ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ centered at $x$ with radius $r$. Several new pointwise estimates for the derivative of the local multilinear maximal function $\mathfrak{M}_{0,Ω}$ and the fractional maximal functions $\mathfrak{M}_{α,Ω}$ $(0<α< mn)$ will be presented. These estimates will not only enable us to establish certain norm inequalities for these operators in Sobolev spaces, but also give us the opportunity to obtain the bounds of these operators on the Sobolev space with zero boundary values.

Grid-side Flexibility of Power Systems in Integrating Large-scale Renewable Generations: A Critical Review on Concepts, Formulations and Solution Approaches

Though considerable effort has been devoted to exploiting generation-side and demand-side operational flexibility in order to cope with uncertain renewable generations, grid-side operational flexibility has not been fully investigated. In this review, we define grid-side flexibility as the ability of a power network to deploy its flexibility resources to cope with the changes of power system state, particularly due to variation of renewable generation. Starting with a survey on the metrics of operational flexibility, we explain the definition from both physical and mathematical point of views. Then conceptual examples are presented to demonstrate the impacts of grid-side flexibility graphically, providing a geometric interpretation for a better understanding of the concepts. Afterwards the formulations and solution approaches in terms of grid-side flexibility in power system operation and planning are reviewed, based on which future research directions and challenges are outlined.

Resilience Control of DC Shipboard Power Systems

Direct current (DC) network has been recognized as a promising technique, especially for shipboard power systems (SPSs). Fast resilience control is required for an SPS to survive after faults. Towards this end, this paper proposes the indices of survivability and functionality, based on which a two-phase resilience control method is derived. The on/off status of loads are determined in the first phase to maximize survivability, while the functionality of supplying loads are maximized in the second phase. Based on a comprehensive model of a DC shipboard power systems (DC-SPS), the two-phase method renders two mixed-integer non-convex problems. To make the problems tractable, we develop second-order-cone-based convex relaxations, thus converting the problems into mixed-integer convex problems. Though this approach does not necessarily guarantee feasible, hence global, solutions to the original non-convex formulations, we provide additional mild assumptions, which ensures that the convex relaxations are exact when line constraints are not binding. In the case of inexactness, we provide a simple heuristic approach to ensure feasible solutions. Numerical tests empirically confirm the efficacy of the proposed method.

Cross-City Transfer Learning for Deep Spatio-Temporal Prediction

Spatio-temporal prediction is a key type of tasks in urban computing, e.g., traffic flow and air quality. Adequate data is usually a prerequisite, especially when deep learning is adopted. However, the development levels of different cities are unbalanced, and still many cities suffer from data scarcity. To address the problem, we propose a novel cross-city transfer learning method for deep spatio-temporal prediction tasks, called RegionTrans. RegionTrans aims to effectively transfer knowledge from a data-rich source city to a data-scarce target city. More specifically, we first learn an inter-city region matching function to match each target city region to a similar source city region. A neural network is designed to effectively extract region-level representation for spatio-temporal prediction. Finally, an optimization algorithm is proposed to transfer learned features from the source city to the target city with the region matching function. Using citywide crowd flow prediction as a demonstration experiment, we verify the effectiveness of RegionTrans. Results show that RegionTrans can outperform the state-of-the-art fine-tuning deep spatio-temporal prediction models by reducing up to 10.7% prediction error.

Optimal Control of AGC Systems Considering Non-Gaussian Wind Power Uncertainty

Wind power uncertainty poses significant challenges for automatic generation control (AGC) systems. It can enhance control performances to explicitly consider wind power uncertainty distributions within controller design. However, widely accepted wind uncertainties usually follow non-Gaussian distributions which may lead to complicated stochastic AGC modeling and high computational burdens. To overcome the issue, this paper presents a novel Ito-theory-based model for the stochastic control problem (SCP) of AGC systems, which reduces the computational burden of optimization considering non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty to the same scale as that for deterministic control problems. We present an Ito process model to exactly describe non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty, and then propose an SCP based on the concept of stochastic assessment functions (SAFs). Based on a convergent series expansion of the SAF, the SCP is reformulated as a certain deterministic control problem without sacrificing performance under non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty. The reformulated control problem is proven as a convex optimization which can be solved efficiently. A case study demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach compared with several conventional approaches.

Disentangling Features in 3D Face Shapes for Joint Face Reconstruction and Recognition

This paper proposes an encoder-decoder network to disentangle shape features during 3D face reconstruction from single 2D images, such that the tasks of reconstructing accurate 3D face shapes and learning discriminative shape features for face recognition can be accomplished simultaneously. Unlike existing 3D face reconstruction methods, our proposed method directly regresses dense 3D face shapes from single 2D images, and tackles identity and residual (i.e., non-identity) components in 3D face shapes explicitly and separately based on a composite 3D face shape model with latent representations. We devise a training process for the proposed network with a joint loss measuring both face identification error and 3D face shape reconstruction error. To construct training data we develop a method for fitting 3D morphable model (3DMM) to multiple 2D images of a subject. Comprehensive experiments have been done on MICC, BU3DFE, LFW and YTF databases. The results show that our method expands the capacity of 3DMM for capturing discriminative shape features and facial detail, and thus outperforms existing methods both in 3D face reconstruction accuracy and in face recognition accuracy.

Context-aware Synthesis for Video Frame Interpolation

Video frame interpolation algorithms typically estimate optical flow or its variations and then use it to guide the synthesis of an intermediate frame between two consecutive original frames. To handle challenges like occlusion, bidirectional flow between the two input frames is often estimated and used to warp and blend the input frames. However, how to effectively blend the two warped frames still remains a challenging problem. This paper presents a context-aware synthesis approach that warps not only the input frames but also their pixel-wise contextual information and uses them to interpolate a high-quality intermediate frame. Specifically, we first use a pre-trained neural network to extract per-pixel contextual information for input frames. We then employ a state-of-the-art optical flow algorithm to estimate bidirectional flow between them and pre-warp both input frames and their context maps. Finally, unlike common approaches that blend the pre-warped frames, our method feeds them and their context maps to a video frame synthesis neural network to produce the interpolated frame in a context-aware fashion. Our neural network is fully convolutional and is trained end to end. Our experiments show that our method can handle challenging scenarios such as occlusion and large motion and outperforms representative state-of-the-art approaches.

Learning Environmental Sounds with Multi-scale Convolutional Neural Network

Deep learning has dramatically improved the performance of sounds recognition. However, learning acoustic models directly from the raw waveform is still challenging. Current waveform-based models generally use time-domain convolutional layers to extract features. The features extracted by single size filters are insufficient for building discriminative representation of audios. In this paper, we propose multi-scale convolution operation, which can get better audio representation by improving the frequency resolution and learning filters cross all frequency area. For leveraging the waveform-based features and spectrogram-based features in a single model, we introduce two-phase method to fuse the different features. Finally, we propose a novel end-to-end network called WaveMsNet based on the multi-scale convolution operation and two-phase method. On the environmental sounds classification datasets ESC-10 and ESC-50, the classification accuracies of our WaveMsNet achieve 93.75% and 79.10% respectively, which improve significantly from the previous methods.

Prediction of two-dimensional nodal-line semimetal in a carbon nitride covalent network

Carbon nitride compounds have emerged recently as a prominent member of 2D materials beyond graphene. The experimental realizations of 2D graphitic carbon nitride g-C$_3$N$_4$, nitrogenated holey grahpene C$_2$N, polyaniline C$_3$N have shown their promising potential in energy and environmental applications. In this work, we predict a new type of carbon nitride network with a C$_9$N$_4$ stoichiometry from first principle calculations. Unlike common C-N compounds and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are typically insulating, surprisingly C$_9$N$_4$ is found to be a 2D nodal-line semimetal (NLSM). The nodal line in C$_9$N$_4$ forms a closed ring centered at $Γ$ point, which originates from the pz orbitals of both C and N. The linear crossing happens right at Fermi level contributed by two sets of dispersive Kagome and Dirac bands, which is robust due to negligible spin-orbital-coupling (SOC) in C and N. Besides, it is revealed that the formation of nodal ring is of accidental band degeneracy in nature induced by the chemical potential difference of C and N, as validated by a single orbital tight-binding model, rather than protected by crystal in-plane mirror symmetry or band topology. Interestingly, a new structure of nodal line, i.e., nodal-cylinder, is found in momentum space for AA-stacking C$_9$N$_4$. Our results imply possible functionalization for a novel metal-free C-N covalent network with interesting semimetallic properties.

iVQA: Inverse Visual Question Answering

We propose the inverse problem of Visual question answering (iVQA), and explore its suitability as a benchmark for visuo-linguistic understanding. The iVQA task is to generate a question that corresponds to a given image and answer pair. Since the answers are less informative than the questions, and the questions have less learnable bias, an iVQA model needs to better understand the image to be successful than a VQA model. We pose question generation as a multi-modal dynamic inference process and propose an iVQA model that can gradually adjust its focus of attention guided by both a partially generated question and the answer. For evaluation, apart from existing linguistic metrics, we propose a new ranking metric. This metric compares the ground truth question's rank among a list of distractors, which allows the drawbacks of different algorithms and sources of error to be studied. Experimental results show that our model can generate diverse, grammatically correct and content correlated questions that match the given answer.

City Brain, a New Architecture of Smart City Based on the Internet Brain

In the ten years after the Smart City was put forward, there are still problems like unclear concept, lack of top-down design and information island. With the further development of the Internet, the brain-like architecture of the Internet is becoming clearer and clearer. As a product of combination of city buildings and the Internet, the Smart City will also have a new architecture, and the city brain thus appears. Based on the Internet Brain, this paper describes how to construct the Smart City in the form of brain-like tissue, and how to evaluate the construction level of the Smart City (City IQ) relying on the Big SNS (city neural networks) and city cloud reflex arcs.

Inverse Visual Question Answering: A New Benchmark and VQA Diagnosis Tool

In recent years, visual question answering (VQA) has become topical. The premise of VQA's significance as a benchmark in AI, is that both the image and textual question need to be well understood and mutually grounded in order to infer the correct answer. However, current VQA models perhaps `understand' less than initially hoped, and instead master the easier task of exploiting cues given away in the question and biases in the answer distribution. In this paper we propose the inverse problem of VQA (iVQA). The iVQA task is to generate a question that corresponds to a given image and answer pair. We propose a variational iVQA model that can generate diverse, grammatically correct and content correlated questions that match the given answer. Based on this model, we show that iVQA is an interesting benchmark for visuo-linguistic understanding, and a more challenging alternative to VQA because an iVQA model needs to understand the image better to be successful. As a second contribution, we show how to use iVQA in a novel reinforcement learning framework to diagnose any existing VQA model by way of exposing its belief set: the set of question-answer pairs that the VQA model would predict true for a given image. This provides a completely new window into what VQA models `believe' about images. We show that existing VQA models have more erroneous beliefs than previously thought, revealing their intrinsic weaknesses. Suggestions are then made on how to address these weaknesses going forward.

Alloy engineering of topological semimetal phase transition in MgTa$_{2-x}$Nb$_x$N$_3$

Dirac, triple-point and Weyl fermions represent three topological semimetal phases, characterized with a descending degree of band degeneracy, which have been realized separately in specific crystalline materials with different lattice symmetries. Here we demonstrate an alloy engineering approach to realize all three types of fermions in one single material system of MgTa$_{2-x}$Nb$_x$N$_3$. Based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we map out a phase diagram of topological order in the parameter space of alloy concentration and crystalline symmetry, where the intrinsic MgTa$_2$N$_3$ with the highest symmetry hosts the Dirac semimetal phase which transforms into the triple-point and then the Weyl semimetal phase with the increasing Nb concentration that lowers the crystalline symmetries. Therefore, alloy engineering affords a unique approach for experimental investigation of topological transitions of semimetallic phases manifesting different fermionic behaviors.
