Photoinduced topological phase transitions in strained black phosphorus

Photoinduced topological phase transitions (TPTs) in black phosphorous (BP) under compressive strain were investigated by combining Floquet theory and first-principles calculations. Intriguing photo-dressed electronic states including Floquet-Dirac semimetals and Floquet topological insulators have been identified, which can be feasibly engineered by changing the direction, intensity and frequency of incident laser. Remarkably, tunable TPT from type-I to type-II Floquet-Dirac fermions can be realized by irradiating circularly polarized laser (CPL), with an origin rooted in optical Stark effect. Furthermore, the photoinduced Floquet-Dirac phases is shown to host topological surface states that exhibit nonequilibrium electron transport in a direction locked by the helicity of CPL. This work provides useful guidance for experimental observation of Floquet TPTs, and extends optoelectrionic applications of BP to nonequilibrium regime.

Intelligence Quotient and Intelligence Grade of Artificial Intelligence

Although artificial intelligence is currently one of the most interesting areas in scientific research, the potential threats posed by emerging AI systems remain a source of persistent controversy. To address the issue of AI threat, this study proposes a standard intelligence model that unifies AI and human characteristics in terms of four aspects of knowledge, i.e., input, output, mastery, and creation. Using this model, we observe three challenges, namely, expanding of the von Neumann architecture; testing and ranking the intelligence quotient of naturally and artificially intelligent systems, including humans, Google, Bing, Baidu, and Siri; and finally, the dividing of artificially intelligent systems into seven grades from robots to Google Brain. Based on this, we conclude that AlphaGo belongs to the third grade.

Impacts and Benefits of UPFC to Wind Power Integration in Unit Commitment

Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is recognized as the most powerful flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) device for power system operation. This paper addresses how UPFC explores the transmission flexibility and facilitates the integration of uncertain and volatile wind power generation. To this end, a comprehensive unit commitment (UC) model with UPFC and uncertain wind power generation is proposed. Then, some metrics are introduced to evaluate the impacts of UPFC on the reliability, security and economy of power system operation. Further, different dispatch strategies of UPFC are compared to provide helpful guidances on making full use of UPFC to hedge against uncertainties. In addition, facing the challenging mixed-integer non-linear non-convex problems, approximate models are proposed to provide a starting point to solve the problems efficiently. All these models are easy to adapt to other types of FACTS devices. Illustrative numerical results are provided.

Efficient Simulation of Temperature Evolution of Overhead Transmission Lines Based on Analytical Solution and NWP

Transmission lines are vital components in power systems. Tripping of transmission lines caused by over-temperature is a major threat to the security of system operations, so it is necessary to efficiently simulate line temperature under both normal operation conditions and foreseen fault conditions. Existing methods based on thermal-steady-state analyses cannot reflect transient temperature evolution, and thus cannot provide timing information needed for taking remedial actions. Moreover, conventional numerical method requires huge computational efforts and barricades system-wide analysis. In this regard, this paper derives an approximate analytical solution of transmission-line temperature evolution enabling efficient analysis on multiple operation states. Considering the uncertainties in environmental parameters, the region of over-temperature is constructed in the environmental parameter space to realize the over-temperature risk assessment in both the planning stage and real-time operations. A test on a typical conductor model verifies the accuracy of the approximate analytical solution. Based on the analytical solution and numerical weather prediction (NWP) data, an efficient simulation method for temperature evolution of transmission systems under multiple operation states is proposed. As demonstrated on an NPCC 140-bus system, it achieves over 1000 times of efficiency enhancement, verifying its potentials in online risk assessment and decision support.

Risk-limiting Load Restoration for Resilience Enhancement with Intermittent Energy Resources

Microgrids are resources that can be used to restore critical loads after a natural disaster, enhancing resilience of a distribution network. To deal with the stochastic nature of intermittent energy resources, such as wind turbines (WTs) and photovoltaics (PVs), many methods rely on forecast information. However, some microgrids may not be equipped with power forecasting tools. To fill this gap, a risk-limiting strategy based on measurements is proposed. Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to represent a prior joint probability density function (PDF) of power outputs of WTs and PVs over multiple periods. As time rolls forward, the distribution of WT/PV generation is updated based the latest measurement data in a recursive manner. The updated distribution is used as an input for the risk-limiting load restoration problem, enabling an equivalent transformation of the original chance constrained problem into a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). Simulation cases on a distribution system with three microgrids demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results also indicate that networked microgrids have better uncertainty management capabilities than stand-alone microgrids.

Demonstration of Laser-produced Neutron Diagnostic by Radiative Capture Gamma-rays

We report a new scenario of time-of-flight (TOF) technique in which fast neutrons and delayed gamma-ray signals were both recorded in a millisecond time window in harsh environments induced by high-intensity lasers. The delayed gamma signals, arriving far later than the original fast neutron and often being ignored previously, were identified to be the results of radiative captures of thermalized neutrons. The linear correlation between gamma photon number and the fast neutron yield shows that these delayed gamma events can be employed for neutron diagnosis. This method can reduce the detecting efficiency dropping problem caused by prompt high-flux gamma radiation, and provides a new way for neutron diagnosing in high-intensity laser-target interaction experiments.

Prediction of Ideal Topological Semimetals with Triply Degenerate Points in NaCu$_3$Te$_2$ Family

Triply degenerate points (TDPs) in band structure of a crystal can generate novel TDP fermions without high-energy counterparts. Although identifying ideal TDP semimetals, which host clean TDP fermions around the Fermi level ($E_F$) without coexisting of other quasiparticles, is critical to explore the intrinsic properties of this new fermion, it is still a big challenge and has not been achieved up to now. Here, we disclose an effective approach to search for ideal TDP semimetals via selective band crossing between antibonding $s$ and bonding $p$ orbitals along a line in the momentum space with $C_{3v}$ symmetry. Applying this approach, we have successfully identified the NaCu$_3$Te$_2$ family of compounds to be ideal TDP semimetals, where two and only two pairs of TDPs are located around the $E_F$. Moreover, we reveal an interesting mechanism to modulate energy splitting between a pair of TDPs, and illustrate the intrinsic features of TDP Fermi arcs in these ideal TDP semimetals.

Electronic and spin dynamics in the insulating iron pnictide NaFe$_{0.5}$Cu$_{0.5}$As

NaFe$_{0.5}$Cu$_{0.5}$As represents a rare exception in the metallic iron pnictide family, in which a small insulating gap is opened. Based on first-principles study, we provide a comprehensive theoretical characterization of this insulating compound. The Fe$^{3+} $spin degree of freedom is quantified as a quasi-1D $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Heisenberg model. The itinerant As hole state is downfolded to a $p_{xy}$-orbital hopping model on a square lattice. A unique orbital-dependent Hund's coupling between the spin and the hole is revealed. Several important material properties are analyzed, including (a) factors affecting the small $p-d$ charge-transfer gap; (b) role of the extra interchain Fe; and (c) the quasi-1D spin excitation in the Fe chains. The experimental manifestations of these properties are discussed.

Atomically Abrupt Topological p-n Junction

Topological insulators (TI's) are a new class of quantum matter with extraordinary surface electronic states, which bear great potential for spintronics and error-tolerant quantum computing. In order to put a TI into any practical use, these materials need to be fabricated into devices whose basic units are often p-n junctions. Unique electronic properties of a 'topological' p-n junction were proposed theoretically such as the junction electronic state and the spin rectification. However, the fabrication of a lateral topological p-n junction has been challenging because of materials, process, and fundamental reasons. Here, we demonstrate an innovative approach to realize a p-n junction of topological surface states (TSS's) of a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) with an atomically abrupt interface. When a ultrathin Sb film is grown on a 3D TI of Bi2Se3 with a typical n-type TSS, the surface develops a strongly p-type TSS through the substantial hybridization between the 2D Sb film and the Bi2Se3 surface. Thus, the Bi2Se3 surface covered partially with Sb films bifurcates into areas of n- and p-type TSS's as separated by atomic step edges with a lateral electronic junction of as short as 2 nm. This approach opens a different avenue toward various electronic and spintronic devices based on well defined topological p-n junctions with the scalability down to atomic dimensions

Optimal Power Flow in Stand-alone DC Microgrids

Direct-current microgrids (DC-MGs) can operate in either grid-connected or stand-alone mode. In particular, stand-alone DC-MG has many distinct applications. However, the optimal power flow problem of a stand-alone DC-MG is inherently non-convex. In this paper, the optimal power flow (OPF) problem of DC-MG is investigated considering convex relaxation based on second-order cone programming (SOCP). Mild assumptions are proposed to guarantee the exactness of relaxation, which only require uniform nodal voltage upper bounds and positive network loss. Furthermore, it is revealed that the exactness of SOCP relaxation of DC-MGs does not rely on either topology or operating mode of DC-MGs, and an optimal solution must be unique if it exists. If line constraints are considered, the exactness of SOCP relaxation may not hold. In this regard, two heuristic methods are proposed to give approximate solutions. Simulations are conducted to confirm the theoretic results.

Video Frame Interpolation via Adaptive Separable Convolution

Standard video frame interpolation methods first estimate optical flow between input frames and then synthesize an intermediate frame guided by motion. Recent approaches merge these two steps into a single convolution process by convolving input frames with spatially adaptive kernels that account for motion and re-sampling simultaneously. These methods require large kernels to handle large motion, which limits the number of pixels whose kernels can be estimated at once due to the large memory demand. To address this problem, this paper formulates frame interpolation as local separable convolution over input frames using pairs of 1D kernels. Compared to regular 2D kernels, the 1D kernels require significantly fewer parameters to be estimated. Our method develops a deep fully convolutional neural network that takes two input frames and estimates pairs of 1D kernels for all pixels simultaneously. Since our method is able to estimate kernels and synthesizes the whole video frame at once, it allows for the incorporation of perceptual loss to train the neural network to produce visually pleasing frames. This deep neural network is trained end-to-end using widely available video data without any human annotation. Both qualitative and quantitative experiments show that our method provides a practical solution to high-quality video frame interpolation.

Cumulants of event-by-event net-strangeness distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$=7.7-200 GeV from UrQMD model

Fluctuations of conserved quantities, such as baryon, electric charge and strangeness number, are sensitive observables in heavy-ion collisions to search for the QCD phase transition and critical point. In this paper, we performed a systematical analysis on the various cumulants and cumulant ratios of event-by-event net-strangeness distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV from UrQMD model. We performed a systematical study on the contributions from various strange baryons and mesons to the net-strangeness fluctuations. The results demonstrate that the cumulants and cumulant ratios of net-strangeness distributions extracted from different strange particles show very different centrality and energy dependence behavior. By comparing with the net-kaon fluctuations, we found that the strange baryons play an important role in the fluctuations of net-strangeness. This study can provide useful baselines to study the QCD phase transition and search for the QCD critical point by using the fluctuations of net-strangeness in heavy-ion collisions experiment. It can help us to understand non-critical physics contributions to the fluctuations of net-strangeness.

EEG and ECG changes during deep-sea manned submersible operation

Background: Deep-sea manned submersible operation could induce mental workload and influence neurophysiological measures. Psychophysiological responses to submersible operation are not well known. The main aim of this study was to investigate changes in EEG and ECG components and subjective mental stress of pilots during submersible operation. Methods: There were 6 experienced submersible pilots who performed a 3 h submersible operation task composed of 5 subtasks. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded before the operation task, after 1.5 h and 2.5 h operation, and after the task. Subjective ratings of mental stress were also conducted at these time points. Results: HR and scores on subjective stressed scale increased during the task compared to baseline (P<0.05). LF/HF ratio at 1.5 h were higher than those at Baseline (P<0.05) and 2.5 h (P<0.05). Relative theta power at the Cz site increased (P<0.01) and relative alpha power decreased (P<0.01) at 2.5 h compared to values at Baseline. Alpha attenuation coefficient (AAC, ratio of mean alpha power during eyes closed versus eyes open) at 2.5 h and after the task were lower compared to baseline and 1.5 h (P<0.05 or less). Conclusions: Submersible operation resulted in an increased HR in association with mental stress, alterations in autonomic activity and EEG changes that expressed variations in mental workload. Brain arousal level declined during the later operation period.

Gapped spin-1/2 spinon excitations in a new kagome quantum spin liquid compound Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr

We report a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which does not experience any phase transition down to 50 mK, more than three orders lower than the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature ($\sim$ 200 K). A clear gap opening at low temperature is observed in the uniform spin susceptibility obtained from $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We observe the characteristic magnetic field dependence of the gap as expected for fractionalized spin-1/2 spinon excitations. Our experimental results provide firm evidence for spin fractionalization in a topologically ordered spin system, resembling charge fractionalization in the fractional quantum Hall state.

Breaking Diversity Restriction: Distributed Optimal Control of Stand-alone DC Microgrids

Stand-alone direct current (DC) microgrids may belong to different owners and adopt various control strategies. This brings great challenge to its optimal operation due to the difficulty of implementing a unified control. This paper addresses the distributed optimal control of DC microgrids, which intends to break the restriction of diversity to some extent. Firstly, we formulate the optimal power flow (OPF) problem of stand-alone DC microgrids as an exact second order cone program (SOCP) and prove the uniqueness of the optimal solution. Then a dynamic solving algorithm based on primal-dual decomposition method is proposed, the convergence of which is proved theoretically as well as the optimality of its equilibrium point. It should be stressed that the algorithm can provide control commands for the three types of microgrids: (i) power control, (ii) voltage control and (iii) droop control. This implies that each microgrid does not need to change its original control strategy in practice, which is less influenced by the diversity of microgrids. Moreover, the control commands for power controlled and voltage controlled microgrids satisfy generation limits and voltage limits in both transient process and steady state. Finally, a six-microgrid DC system based on the microgrid benchmark is adopted to validate the effectiveness and plug-n-play property of our designs.

Grid-converged Solution and Analysis of the Unsteady Viscous Flow in a Two-dimensional Shock Tube

The flow in a shock tube is extremely complex with dynamic multi-scale structures of sharp fronts, flow separation, and vortices due to the interaction of the shock wave, the contact surface, and the boundary layer over the side wall of the tube. Prediction and understanding of the complex fluid dynamics is of theoretical and practical importance. It is also an extremely challenging problem for numerical simulation, especially at relatively high Reynolds numbers. Daru & Tenaud (Daru, V. & Tenaud, C. 2001 Evaluation of TVD high resolution schemes for unsteady viscous shocked flows. Computers & Fluids 30, 89-113) proposed a two-dimensional model problem as a numerical test case for high-resolution schemes to simulate the flow field in a square closed shock tube. Though many researchers have tried this problem using a variety of computational methods, there is not yet an agreed-upon grid-converged solution of the problem at the Reynolds number of 1000. This paper presents a rigorous grid-convergence study and the resulting grid-converged solutions for this problem by using a newly-developed, efficient, and high-order gas-kinetic scheme. Critical data extracted from the converged solutions are documented as benchmark data. The complex fluid dynamics of the flow at Re = 1000 are discussed and analysed in detail. Major phenomena revealed by the numerical computations include the downward concentration of the fluid through the curved shock, the formation of the vortices, the mechanism of the shock wave bifurcation, the structure of the jet along the bottom wall, and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability near the contact surface.

On 3D Face Reconstruction via Cascaded Regression in Shape Space

Cascaded regression has been recently applied to reconstructing 3D faces from single 2D images directly in shape space, and achieved state-of-the-art performance. This paper investigates thoroughly such cascaded regression based 3D face reconstruction approaches from four perspectives that are not well studied yet: (i) The impact of the number of 2D landmarks; (ii) the impact of the number of 3D vertices; (iii) the way of using standalone automated landmark detection methods; and (iv) the convergence property. To answer these questions, a simplified cascaded regression based 3D face reconstruction method is devised, which can be integrated with standalone automated landmark detection methods and reconstruct 3D face shapes that have the same pose and expression as the input face images, rather than normalized pose and expression. Moreover, an effective training method is proposed by disturbing the automatically detected landmarks. Comprehensive evaluation experiments have been done with comparison to other 3D face reconstruction methods. The results not only deepen the understanding of cascaded regression based 3D face reconstruction approaches, but also prove the effectiveness of proposed method.

Initialization-free Distributed Algorithms for Optimal Resource Allocation with Feasibility Constraints and its Application to Economic Dispatch of Power Systems

In this paper, the distributed resource allocation optimization problem is investigated. The allocation decisions are made to minimize the sum of all the agents' local objective functions while satisfying both the global network resource constraint and the local allocation feasibility constraints. Here the data corresponding to each agent in this separable optimization problem, such as the network resources, the local allocation feasibility constraint, and the local objective function, is only accessible to individual agent and cannot be shared with others, which renders new challenges in this distributed optimization problem. Based on either projection or differentiated projection, two classes of continuous-time algorithms are proposed to solve this distributed optimization problem in an initialization-free and scalable manner. Thus, no re-initialization is required even if the operation environment or network configuration is changed, making it possible to achieve a "plug-and-play" optimal operation of networked heterogeneous agents. The algorithm convergence is guaranteed for strictly convex objective functions, and the exponential convergence is proved for strongly convex functions without local constraints. Then the proposed algorithm is applied to the distributed economic dispatch problem in power grids, to demonstrate how it can achieve the global optimum in a scalable way, even when the generation cost, or system load, or network configuration, is changing.
