Scenarios for Gluino Coannihilation

We study supersymmetric scenarios in which the gluino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP), with a mass sufficiently close to that of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) that gluino coannihilation becomes important. One of these scenarios is the MSSM with soft supersymmetry-breaking squark and slepton masses that are universal at an input GUT renormalization scale, but with non-universal gaugino masses. The other scenario is an extension of the MSSM to include vector-like supermultiplets. In both scenarios, we identify the regions of parameter space where gluino coannihilation is important, and discuss their relations to other regions of parameter space where other mechanisms bring the dark matter density into the range allowed by cosmology. In the case of the non-universal MSSM scenario, we find that the allowed range of parameter space is constrained by the requirement of electroweak symmetry breaking, the avoidance of a charged LSP and the measured mass of the Higgs boson, in particular, as well as the appearance of other dark matter (co)annihilation processes. Nevertheless, LSP masses $m_χ\lesssim 8$~TeV with the correct dark matter density are quite possible. In the case of pure gravity mediation with additional vector-like supermultiplets, changes to the anomaly-mediated gluino mass and the threshold effects associated with these states can make the gluino almost degenerate with the LSP, and we find a similar upper bound.

Big Data Analytics on Traditional HPC Infrastructure Using Two-Level Storage

Data-intensive computing has become one of the major workloads on traditional high-performance computing (HPC) clusters. Currently, deploying data-intensive computing software framework on HPC clusters still faces performance and scalability issues. In this paper, we develop a new two-level storage system by integrating Tachyon, an in-memory file system with OrangeFS, a parallel file system. We model the I/O throughputs of four storage structures: HDFS, OrangeFS, Tachyon and two-level storage. We conduct computational experiments to characterize I/O throughput behavior of two-level storage and compare its performance to that of HDFS and OrangeFS, using TeraSort benchmark. Theoretical models and experimental tests both show that the two-level storage system can increase the aggregate I/O throughputs. This work lays a solid foundation for future work in designing and building HPC systems that can provide a better support on I/O intensive workloads with preserving existing computing resources.

Beyond the CMSSM without an Accelerator: Proton Decay and Direct Dark Matter Detection

We consider two potential non-accelerator signatures of generalizations of the well-studied constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM). In one generalization, the universality constraints on soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters are applied at some input scale $M_{in}$ below the grand unification (GUT) scale $M_{GUT}$, a scenario referred to as `sub-GUT'. The other generalization we consider is to retain GUT-scale universality for the squark and slepton masses, but to relax universality for the soft supersymmetry-breaking contributions to the masses of the Higgs doublets. As with other CMSSM-like models, the measured Higgs mass requires supersymmetric particle masses near or beyond the TeV scale. Because of these rather heavy sparticle masses, the embedding of these CMSSM-like models in a minimal SU(5) model of grand unification can yield a proton lifetime consistent with current experimental limits, and may be accessible in existing and future proton decay experiments. Another possible signature of these CMSSM-like models is direct detection of supersymmetric dark matter. The direct dark matter scattering rate is typically below the reach of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment if $M_{in}$ is close to $M_{GUT}$, but may lie within its reach if $M_{in} \lesssim 10^{11}$ GeV. Likewise, generalizing the CMSSM to allow non-universal supersymmetry-breaking contributions to the Higgs offers extensive possibilities for models within reach of the LZ experiment that have long proton lifetimes.

Gluino Coannihilation Revisited

Some variants of the MSSM feature a strip in parameter space where the lightest neutralino is identified as the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), the gluino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and is nearly degenerate with the LSP, and the relic cold dark matter density is brought into the range allowed by astrophysics and cosmology by coannihilation with the gluino NLSP. We calculate the relic density along this gluino coannihilation strip in the MSSM, including the effects of gluino-gluino bound states and initial-state Sommerfeld enhancement, and taking into account the decoupling of the gluino and LSP densities that occurs for large values of the squark mass. We find that bound-state effects can increase the maximum LSP mass for which the relic cold dark matter density lies within the range favoured by astrophysics and cosmology by as much as ~ 50% if the squark to gluino mass ratio is 1.1, and that the LSP may weigh up to ~ 8 TeV for a wide range of the squark to gluino mass ratio \lesssim 100.

Discrete Conformal Deformation: Algorithm and Experiments

In this paper, we introduce a definition of discrete conformality for triangulated surfaces with flat cone metrics and describe an algorithm for solving the problem of prescribing curvature, that is to deform the metric discrete conformally so that the curvature of the resulting metric coincides with the prescribed curvature. We explicitly construct a discrete conformal map between the input triangulated surface and the deformed triangulated surface. Our algorithm can handle the surface with any topology with or without boundary, and can find a deformed metric for any prescribed curvature satisfying the Gauss-Bonnet formula. In addition, we present the numerical examples to show the convergence of our discrete conformality and to demonstrate the efficiency and the robustness of our algorithm.

Closing in on the Tip of the CMSSM Stau Coannihilation Strip

Near the tip of the stau coannihilation strip in the CMSSM with a neutralino LSP, the astrophysical cold dark matter density constraint forces the stau-neutralino mass difference to be small. If this mass difference is smaller than the tau mass, the stau may decay either in the outer part of an LHC detector - the `disappearing track' signature - or be sufficiently long-lived to leave the detector before decaying - the long-lived massive charged-particle signature. We combine searches for these signatures with conventional missing transverse energy searches during LHC Run 1, identifying the small remaining parts of the CMSSM stau coannihilation strip region that have not yet been excluded, and discussing how they may be explored during Run 2 of the LHC.

Volume and rigidity of hyperbolic polyhedral $3$-manifolds

We investigate the rigidity of hyperbolic cone metrics on $3$-manifolds which are isometric gluing of ideal and hyper-ideal tetrahedra in hyperbolic spaces. These metrics will be called ideal and hyper-ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metrics. It is shown that a hyper-ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metric is determined up to isometry by its curvature and a decorated ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metric is determined up to isometry and change of decorations by its curvature. The main tool used in the proof is the Fenchel dual of the volume function.

The Unified Surface Ricci Flow

Ricci flow deforms the Riemannian metric proportionally to the curvature, such that the curvature evolves according to a heat diffusion process and eventually becomes constant everywhere. Ricci flow has demonstrated its great potential by solving various problems in many fields, which can be hardly handled by alternative methods so far. This work introduces the unified theoretic framework for discrete Surface Ricci Flow, including all common schemes: Thurston's Circle Packing, Tangential Circle Packing, Inversive Distance Circle Packing and Discrete Yamabe. Furthermore, this work also introduces a novel scheme, virtual radius circle packing, under the unified framework. This work gives explicit geometric interpretation to the discrete Ricci energy for all the schemes, and Hessian of the discrete Ricci energy for schemes with Euclidean back ground geometry. The unified frame work deepen our understanding to the the discrete surface Ricci flow theory, and inspired us to discover the new schemes, improved the flexibility and robustness of the algorithms, greatly simplified the implementation and improved the debugging efficiency. Experimental results shows the unified surface Ricci flow algorithms can handle general surfaces with different topologies, and is robust to meshes with different qualities, and effective for solving real problems.

A discrete uniformization theorem for polyhedral surfaces II

A discrete conformality for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces is introduced in this paper. This discrete conformality is shown to be computable. It is proved that each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic polyhedral metric with a given discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula. Furthermore, the hyperbolic polyhedral metric with given curvature can be obtained using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery. In particular, each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface with negative Euler characteristic is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic metric.

Enhancement of Majorana Dark Matter Annihilation Through Higgs Bremsstrahlung

For Majorana dark matter, gauge boson bremsstrahlung plays an important role in enhancing an otherwise helicity-suppressed s-wave annihilation cross-section. This is well known for processes involving a radiated photon or gluon together with a Standard Model fermion-antifermion pair, and the case of massive electroweak gauge bosons has also recently been studied. Here we show that internal Higgs bremsstrahlung also lifts helicity suppression and could be the dominant contribution to the annihilation rate in the late Universe for dark matter masses below ~1 TeV. Using a toy model of leptophilic dark matter, we calculate the annihilation cross-section into a lepton-antilepton pair with a Higgs boson and investigate the energy spectra of the final stable particles at the annihilation point.

A discrete uniformization theorem for polyhedral surfaces

A discrete conformality for polyhedral metrics on surfaces is introduced in this paper which generalizes earlier work on the subject. It is shown that each polyhedral metric on a surface is discrete conformal to a constant curvature polyhedral metric which is unique up to scaling. Furthermore, the constant curvature metric can be found using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery.

A Variational Principle for Improving 2D Triangle Meshes based on Hyperbolic Volume

In this paper, we consider the problem of improving 2D triangle meshes tessellating planar regions. We propose a new variational principle for improving 2D triangle meshes where the energy functional is a convex function over the angle structures whose maximizer is unique and consists only of equilateral triangles. This energy functional is related to hyperbolic volume of ideal 3-simplex. Even with extra constraints on the angles for embedding the mesh into the plane and preserving the boundary, the energy functional remains well-behaved. We devise an efficient algorithm for maximizing the energy functional over these extra constraints. We apply our algorithm to various datasets and compare its performance with that of CVT. The experimental results show that our algorithm produces the meshes with both the angles and the aspect ratios of triangles lying in tighter intervals.

Gravitino Decays and the Cosmological Lithium Problem in Light of the LHC Higgs and Supersymmetry Searches

We studied previously the impact on light-element abundances of gravitinos decaying during or after Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). We found regions of the gravitino mass m_{3/2} and abundance zeta_{3/2} plane where its decays could reconcile the calculated abundance of Li7 with observation without perturbing the other light-element abundances unacceptably. Here we revisit this issue in light of LHC measurements of the Higgs mass and constraints on supersymmetric model parameters, as well as updates in the astrophysical measurements of light-element abundances. In addition to the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking masses at the GUT scale (the CMSSM) studied previously, we also study models with universality imposed below the GUT scale and models with non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM1). We calculate the total likelihood function for the light-element abundances, taking into account the observational uncertainties. We find that gravitino decays provide a robust solution to the cosmological Li7 problem along strips in the (m_{3/2}, zeta_{3/2}) plane along which the abundances of deuterium, He4 and Li7 may be fit with chi^2_min < 3, compared with chi^2 ~ 34 if the effects of gravitino decays are unimportant. The minimum of the likelihood function is reduced to chi^2 < 2 when the uncertainty on D/H is relaxed and < 1 when the lithium abundance is taken from globular cluster data.

The Higgs Mass beyond the CMSSM

The apparent discovery of a Higgs boson with mass ~125 GeV has had a significant impact on the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model in which the scalar masses, gaugino masses and tri-linear A-terms are assumed to be universal at the GUT scale (the CMSSM). Much of the low-mass parameter space in the CMSSM has been excluded by supersymmetric particle searches at the LHC as well as by the Higgs mass measurement and the emergent signal for B_s to mu^+ mu^-. Here, we consider the impact of these recent LHC results on several variants of the CMSSM with a primary focus on obtaining a Higgs mass of ~125 GeV. In particular, we consider the one- and two-parameter extensions of the CMSSM with one or both of the Higgs masses set independently of the common sfermion mass, m_0 (the NUHM1,2). We also consider the one-parameter extension of the CMSSM in which the input universality scale M_in is below the GUT scale (the sub-GUT CMSSM). We find that when M_in < M_GUT large regions of parameter space open up where the relic density of neutralinos can successfully account for dark matter with a Higgs boson mass ~125 GeV. In some of these regions essential roles are played by coannihilation processes that are usually less important in the CMSSM with M_in = M_GUT. Finally, we reconsider mSUGRA models with sub-GUT universality, which have the same number of parameters as the CMSSM. Here too, we find phenomenologically viable regions of parameter space, which are essentially non-existent in GUT-scale mSUGRA models. Interestingly, we find that the preferred range of the A-term straddles that predicted by the simplest Polonyi model.

A TQFT of Turaev-Viro type on shaped triangulations

A shaped triangulation is a finite triangulation of an oriented pseudo three manifold where each tetrahedron carries dihedral angles of an ideal hyberbolic tetrahedron. To each shaped triangulation, we associate a quantum partition function in the form of an absolutely convergent state integral which is invariant under shaped 3-2 Pachner moves and invariant with respect to shape gauge transformations generated by total dihedral angles around internal edges through the Neumann-Zagier Poisson bracket. Similarly to Turaev-Viro theory, the state variables live on edges of the triangulation but take their values on the whole real axis. The tetrahedral weight functions are composed of three hyperbolic gamma functions in a way that they enjoy a manifest tetrahedral symmetry. We conjecture that for shaped triangulations of closed 3-manifolds, our partition function is twice the absolute value squared of the partition function of Techmüller TQFT defined by Andersen and Kashaev. This is similar to the known relationship between the Turaev-Viro and the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invarints of three manifolds. We also discuss interpretations of our construction in terms of three-dimensional supersymmetric field theories related to triangulated three-dimensional manifolds.

Metastable Charged Sparticles and the Cosmological Li7 Problem

We consider the effects of metastable charged sparticles on Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), including bound-state reaction rates and chemical effects. We make a new analysis of the bound states of negatively-charged massive particles with the light nuclei most prominent in BBN, and present a new code to track their abundances, paying particular attention to that of Li7. Assuming, as an example, that the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), and that the lighter stau slepton, stau_1, is the metastable next-to-lightest sparticle within the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (CMSSM), we analyze the possible effects on the standard BBN abundances of stau_1 bound states and decays for representative values of the gravitino mass. Taking into account the constraint on the CMSSM parameter space imposed by the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC, we delineate regions in which the fit to the measured light-element abundances is as good as in standard BBN. We also identify regions of the CMSSM parameter space in which the bound state properties, chemistry and decays of metastable charged sparticles can solve the cosmological Li7 problem.
