Superfluid-Mott-insulator phase transition of light in a two-mode cavity array with ultrastrong coupling

In this paper we construct a new type of cavity array, in each cavity of which multiple two-level atoms interact with two independent photon modes. This system can be totally governed by a two-mode Dicke-lattice model, which includes all of the counter-rotating terms and therefore works well in the ultrastrong coupling regime achieved in recent experiments. Attributed to its special atom-photon coupling scheme, this model supports a global conserved excitation and a continuous $U(1)$ symmetry, rather than the discrete $Z_{2}$ symmetry in the standard Dicke-lattice model. This distinct change of symmetry via adding an extra photon mode strongly impacts the nature of photon localization/delocalization behavior. Specifically, the atom-photon interaction features stable Mott-lobe structures of photons and a second-order superfluid-Mott-insulator phase transition, which share similarities with the Jaynes-Cummings-lattice and Bose-Hubbard models. More interestingly, the Mott-lobe structures predicted here depend crucially on the atom number of each site. We also show that our model can be mapped into a continuous $XX$ spin model. Finally, we propose a scheme to implement the introduced cavity array in circuit quantum electrodynamics. This work broadens our understanding of strongly-correlated photons.

Quantum phases of a two-dimensional polarized degenerate Fermi gas in an optical cavity

In this paper we analytically investigate the ground-state properties of a two-dimensional polarized degenerate Fermi gas in a high-finesse optical cavity, which is governed by a generalized Fermi-Dicke model with tunable parameters. By solving the photon-number dependent Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation, we find rich quantum phases and phase diagrams, which depend crucially on the fermion-photon coupling strength, the fermion-fermion interaction strength, and the atomic resonant frequency (effective Zeeman field). In particular, without the fermion-fermion interaction and with a weak atomic resonant frequency, we find a mixed phase that the normal phase with two Fermi surfaces and the superradiant phase coexist, and reveal a first-order phase transition from this normal phase to the superradiant phase. With the intermediate fermion-fermion interaction and fermion-photon coupling strengths, we predict another mixed phase that the superfluid and superradiant phases coexist. Finally, we address briefly how to detect these predicted quantum phases and phase diagrams in experiments.

Topological Phase Transitions and Thouless Pumping of Light in Photonic Waveguide Arrays

Photonic waveguide arrays provide an excellent platform for simulating conventional topological systems, and they can also be employed for the study of novel topological phases in photonics systems. However, a direct measurement of bulk topological invariants remains a great challenge. Here we study topological features of generalized commensurate Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) photonic waveguide arrays and construct a topological phase diagram by calculating all bulk Chern numbers, and then explore the bulk-edge correspondence by analyzing the topological edge states and their winding numbers. In contrast to incommensurate AAH models, diagonal and off-diagonal commensurate AAH models are not topologically equivalent. In particular, there appear nontrivial topological phases with large Chern numbers and topological phase transitions. By implementing Thouless pumping of light in photonic waveguide arrays, we propose a simple scheme to measure the bulk Chern numbers.

Witnessing topological Weyl semimetal phase in a minimal circuit-QED lattice

We present a feasible protocol to mimic topological Weyl semimetal phase in a small one-dimensional circuit-QED lattice. By modulating the photon hopping rates and on-site photon frequencies in parametric spaces, we demonstrate that the momentum space of this one-dimensional lattice model can be artificially mapped to three dimensions accompanied by the emergence of topological Weyl semimetal phase. Furthermore, via a lattice-based cavity input-output process, we show that all the essential topological features of Weyl semimetal phase, including the topological charge associated with each Weyl point and the open Fermi arcs, can be unambiguously detected in a circuit with four dissipative resonators by measuring the reflection spectra. These remarkable features may open a new prospect in using well-controlled small quantum lattices to mimic and study topological phases.

Controllable high-fidelity quantum state transfer and entanglement generation in circuit QED

We propose a scheme to realize controllable quantum state transfer and entanglement generation among transmon qubits in the typical circuit QED setup based on adiabatic passage. Through designing the time-dependent driven pulses applied on the transmon qubits, we find that fast quantum sate transfer can be achieved between arbitrary two qubits and quantum entanglement among the qubits also can also be engineered. Furthermore, we numerically analyzed the influence of the decoherence on our scheme with the current experimental accessible systematical parameters. The result shows that our scheme is very robust against both the cavity decay and qubit relaxation, the fidelities of the state transfer and entanglement preparation process could be very high. In addition, our scheme is also shown to be insensitive to the inhomogeneous of qubit-resonator coupling strengths.

Simulation and Detection of Photonic Chern Insulators in One-Dimensional Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics Lattice

We introduce a simple method to realize and detect photonic topological Chern insulators with one-dimensional circiut quantum electrodynamics arrays. By periodically modulating the couplings of the array, we show that this one-dimensional model can be mapped into a two-dimensional Chern insulator model. In addition to allowing the study of photonic Chern insulators, this approach also provides a natural platform to realise experimentally Laughlin's pumping argument. Based on scattering theory of topological insulators and input-output formalism, we show that the photonic edge state can be probed directly and the topological invariant can be detected from the winding number of the reflection coefficient phase.

Simulation and measurement of the fractional particle number in one-dimensional optical lattices

We propose a scheme to mimic and directly measure the fractional particle number in a generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with ultracold fermions in one-dimensional optical lattices. We show that the fractional particle number in this model can be simulated in the momentum-time parameter space in terms of Berry curvature without a spatial domain wall. In this simulation, a hopping modulation is adiabatically tuned to form a kink-type configuration and the induced current plays the role of an analogous soliton distributing in the time domain, such that the mimicked fractional particle number is expressed by the particle transport. Two feasible experimental setups of optical lattices for realizing the required Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian with tunable parameters and time-varying hopping modulation are presented. We also show practical methods for measuring the particle transport in the proposed cold atom systems by numerically calculating the shift of the Wannier center and the center of mass of an atomic cloud.

Valley-dependent gauge fields for ultracold atoms in square optical superlattices

We propose an experimental scheme to realize the valley-dependent gauge fields for ultracold fermionic atoms trapped in a state-dependent square optical lattice. Our scheme relies on two sets of Raman laser beams to engineer the hopping between adjacent sites populated by two-component fermionic atoms. One set of Raman beams are used to realize a staggered π-flux lattice, where low energy atoms near two inequivalent Dirac points should be described by the Dirac equation for spin-1/2 particles. Another set of laser beams with proper Rabi frequencies are added to further modulate the atomic hopping parameters. The hopping modulation will give rise to effective gauge potentials with opposite signs near the two valleys, mimicking the interesting strain-induced pseudo-gauge fields in graphene. The proposed valley-dependent gauge fields are tunable and provide a new route to realize quantum valley Hall effects and atomic valleytronics.

Long-Range triplet Josephson Current driven by the bias voltage

We study the long-range triplet Josephson current in a clean junction composed of two s-wave superconductors and a normal-metal/ferromagnet/normal-metal trilayer. Through applying the bias voltages on the metal regions by two antiparallel half-metal electrodes, we show that the amplitude and direction of this long-range current can be controlled easily and flexibly. Such current arises from the fact that the applied voltage can produce a nonequilibrium spin-dependent quasiparticle distribution in the metal regions so that the Cooper pairs acquire an extra momenta, which will lead to a spin-flip processes in the metal regions. This processes can produce the parallel spin triplet pairs in the central ferromagnet layer. In particular, if the voltage is applied only on one metal region, we further find that the recently discovered long-range superharmonic Josephson current will appear because of the transport of an even number of parallel spin triplet pairs.

Analog Superconducting Quantum Simulator for Holstein Polarons

We propose an analog quantum simulator for the Holstein molecular-crystal model based on a superconducting circuit QED system in the dispersive regime. By varying the driving field on the superconducting resonators, one can readily access both the adiabatic and anti-adiabatic regimes of this model. Strong e-ph coupling required for small-polaron formation can also be reached. We show that small-polaron state of arbitrary quasimomentum can be generated by applying a microwave pulse to the resonators. We also show that significant squeezing in the resonator modes can be achieved in the polaron-crossover regime through a measurement-based scheme.

Creation, manipulation and detection of Majorana fermions with cold atoms in optical lattice

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate the transverse field Ising model with cold atoms trapped in one-dimensional optical lattice. Majorana fermions are created at the ends of the optical lattice segment in topological phase. By controlling the addressing lasers, one can move, fuse and braid them. We also show that the non-Abelian braiding statistics of Majorana fermions can be demonstrated unambiguously through the construction of two braiding operations and distinguishing the resulting two output orthogonal collective spin states. A nice feature of the scheme is that the strong fluorescence provided by the collective spin state can be readily detected in experiment.

Simulating Z_2 topological insulators with cold atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate and detect the properties of time-reversal invariant topological insulators, using cold atoms trapped in one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattices. This system is described by a one-dimensional Aubry-Andre model with an additional SU(2) gauge structure, which captures the essential properties of a two-dimensional Z2 topological insulator. We demonstrate that topologically protected edge states, with opposite spin orientations, can be pumped across the lattice by sweeping a laser phase adiabatically. This process constitutes an elegant way to transfer topologically protected quantum states in a highly controllable environment. We discuss how density measurements could provide clear signatures of the topological phases emanating from our one-dimensional system.

Probing Half-odd Topological Number with Cold Atoms in a Non-Abelian Optical Lattice

We propose an experimental scheme to probe the contribution of a single Dirac cone to the Hall conductivity as half-odd topological number sequence. In our scheme, the quantum anomalous Hall effect as in graphene is simulated with cold atoms trapped in an optical lattice and subjected to a laser-induced non-Abelian gauge field. By tuning the laser intensity to change the gauge flux, the energies of the four Dirac points in the first Brillouin zone are shifted with each other and the contribution of the single Dirac cone to the total atomic Hall conductivity is manifested. We also show such manifestation can be experimentally probed with atomic density profile measurements.

Scalable quantum information processing with atomic ensembles and flying photons

We present a scheme for scalable quantum information processing (QIP) with atomic ensembles and flying photons. Using the Rydberg blockade, we encode the qubits in the collective atomic states, which could be manipulated fast and easily due to the enhanced interaction, in comparison to the single-atom case. We demonstrate that our proposed gating could be applied to generation of two-dimensional cluster states for measurement-based quantum computation. Moreover, the atomic ensembles also function as quantum repeaters useful for long distance quantum state transfer. We show the possibility of our scheme to work in bad cavity or in weak coupling regime, which could much relax the experimental requirement. The efficient coherent operations on the ensemble qubits enable our scheme to be switchable between quantum computation and quantum communication using atomic ensembles.

A scheme for generating entangled cluster state of atomic ensembles

It was shown in Ref.[Phys.Rev.A 77,045802(2008)] that the dynamics of a control atom and an atomic sample interacting dispersively with a cavity can be discribed by the Jaynes-Cummings model and the collective mode of the atomic sample can be analogous with a bosonic mode. Here, by analogizing the behaviour of the atomic sample with the one of the cavity, we propose a scheme to generate cluster states of atomic ensembles by Cavity QED.

Decoherence-free quantum memory for photonic state using atomic ensembles

Large scale quantum information processing requires stable and long-lived quantum memories. Here, using atom-photon entanglement, we propose an experimentally feasible scheme to realize decoherence-free quantum memory with atomic ensembles, and show one of its applications, remote transfer of unknown quantum state, based on laser manipulation of atomic ensembles, photonic state operation through optical elements, and single-photon detection with moderate efficiency. The scheme, with inherent fault-tolerance to the practical noise and imperfections, allows one to retrieve the information in the memory for further quantum information processing within the reach of current technology.
