Realization of Massive Relativistic Spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger Quasiparticle in Condensed Matter Systems

The spin-3/2 elementary particle, known as Rarita-Schwinger (RS) fermion, is described by a vector-spinor field ψ_{μα}, whose number of components is larger than its independent degrees of freedom (DOF). Thus the RS equations contain nontrivial constraints to eliminate the redundant DOF. Consequently the standard procedure adopted in realizing relativistic spin-1/2 quasi-particle is not capable of creating the RS fermion in condensed matter systems. In this work, we propose a generic method to construct a Hamiltonian which implicitly contains the RS constraints, thus includes the eigenstates and energy dispersions being exactly the same as those of RS equations. By implementing our 16X16 or 6X6 Hamiltonian, one can realize the 3 dimensional or 2 dimensional (2D) massive RS quasiparticles, respectively. In the non-relativistic limit, the 2D 6X6 Hamiltonian can be reduced to two 3X3 Hamiltonians which describe the positive and negative energy parts respectively. Due to the nontrivial constraints, this simplified 2D massive RS quasiparticle has an exotic property: it has vanishing orbital magnetic moment while its orbital magnetization is finite. Finally, we discuss the material realization of RS quasiparticle. Our study provides an opportunity to realize higher spin elementary fermions with constraints in condensed matter systems.

First Principles Study of the Giant Magnetic Anisotropy Energy in Bulk Na4IrO4

In 5d transition metal oxides, novel properties arise from the interplay of electron correlations and spin--orbit interactions. Na4IrO4, where 5d transition-metal Ir atom occupies the center of the square-planar coordination environment, is synthesized. Based on density functional theory, we calculate its electronic and magnetic properties. Our numerical results show that the Ir-5d bands are quite narrow, and the bands around the Fermi level are mainly contributed by d_{xy},d_{yz} and d_{zx} orbitals. The magnetic easy-axis is perpendicular to the IrO4 plane, and the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of Na4IrO4 is found to be very giant. We estimate the magnetic parameters by mapping the calculated total energy for different spin configurations onto a spin model. The next nearest neighbor exchange interaction J2 is much larger than other intersite exchange interactions and results in the magnetic ground state configuration. Our study clearly demonstrates that the huge MAE comes from the single-ion anisotropy rather than the anisotropic interatomic spin exchange. This compound has a large spin gap but very narrow spin-wave dispersion, due to the large single-ion anisotropy and relatively small exchange couplings. Noticing this remarkable magnetic feature originated from its highly isolated IrO4 moiety, we also explore the possiblity to further enhance the MAE.

Nonlinear Quantum Hall effects in Rarita-Schwinger gas

Emergence of higher spin relativistic fermionic materials becomes a new favorite in the study of condensed matter physics. Massive Rarita-Schwinger 3/2-spinor was known owning very exotic properties, such as the superluminal fermionic modes and even being unstable in an external magnetic field. Due to the superluminal modes and the non-trivial constraints on the Rarita-Schwinger gas, we exposit anomalous properties of the Hall effects in (2+1)-dimensions which subvert the well-known quantum Hall paradigms. First, the Hall conductance of a pure Rarita-Schwinger gas is step-like but not plateau-quantized, instead of the linear dependence on the filling factor for a pure spin-1/2 Dirac gas. In reality, the Hall conductance of the Dirac gas is of quantized integer plateaus with the unit $\frac{e^2}h$ due to the localization away from the Landau level centers. If the general localization rule is applicable to the disordered Rarita-Schwinger gas, the Hall plateaus are also expected to appear but they are nonlinearly dependent on the Landau level index. Furthermore, there is a critical magnetic field beyond which higher Landau levels become unstable. This confines the filling factor of the system. We also show that the non-hermitness of the effective Hamiltonian is not crucial to the nonlinearity of the quantum Hall conductance.

CaTe: a new topological node-line and Dirac semimetal

Topological semimetals recently stimulate intense research activities. Combining first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we predict that CaTe is topological node-line semimetal when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. We also obtain the nearly flat surface state which has the drumhead characteristic. When SOC is included, three node lines evolve into a pair of Dirac points along the $M-R$ line. These Dirac points are robust and protected by $C_{4}$ rotation symmetry. Once this crystal symmetry is broken, the Dirac points will be eliminated, and the system becomes a strong topological insulator.

Distributed measurement of mode coupling in birefringent fibers with random polarization modes

A scanning white light interferometer is developed to measure the distributed polarization coupling (DPC) in high birefringence polarization maintaining fibers (PMFs). Traditionally, this technique requests only one polarization mode to be excited or both polarization modes to be excited with equal intensity in the PMF. Thus, an accurate alignment of the polarization direction with the principal axis in PMF is strictly required, which is not facilely realized in practical measurement. This paper develops a method to measure the spatial distribution of polarization mode coupling with random modes excited using a white light Michelson interferometer. The influence of incident polarization extinction ratio (PER) on polarization coupling detection is evaluated theoretically and experimentally. It is also analyzed and validated in corresponding measurement that the sensitivity of the polarization coupling detection system can be improved more than 100 times with the rotation of the analyzer.

Efficient Discriminative Nonorthogonal Binary Subspace with its Application to Visual Tracking

One of the crucial problems in visual tracking is how the object is represented. Conventional appearance-based trackers are using increasingly more complex features in order to be robust. However, complex representations typically not only require more computation for feature extraction, but also make the state inference complicated. We show that with a careful feature selection scheme, extremely simple yet discriminative features can be used for robust object tracking. The central component of the proposed method is a succinct and discriminative representation of the object using discriminative non-orthogonal binary subspace (DNBS) which is spanned by Haar-like features. The DNBS representation inherits the merits of the original NBS in that it efficiently describes the object. It also incorporates the discriminative information to distinguish foreground from background. However, the problem of finding the DNBS bases from an over-complete dictionary is NP-hard. We propose a greedy algorithm called discriminative optimized orthogonal matching pursuit (D-OOMP) to solve this problem. An iterative formulation named iterative D-OOMP is further developed to drastically reduce the redundant computation between iterations and a hierarchical selection strategy is integrated for reducing the search space of features. The proposed DNBS representation is applied to object tracking through SSD-based template matching. We validate the effectiveness of our method through extensive experiments on challenging videos with comparisons against several state-of-the-art trackers and demonstrate its capability to track objects in clutter and moving background.
