CSDN: Combing Shallow and Deep Networks for Accurate Real-time Segmentation of High-definition Intravascular Ultrasound Images

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is the preferred modality for capturing real-time and high resolution cross-sectional images of the coronary arteries, and evaluating the stenosis. Accurate and real-time segmentation of IVUS images involves the delineation of lumen and external elastic membrane borders. In this paper, we propose a two-stream framework for efficient segmentation of 60 MHz high resolution IVUS images. It combines shallow and deep networks, namely, CSDN. The shallow network with thick channels focuses to extract low-level details. The deep network with thin channels takes charge of learning high-level semantics. Treating the above information separately enables learning a model to achieve high accuracy and high efficiency for accurate real-time segmentation. To further improve the segmentation performance, mutual guided fusion module is used to enhance and fuse both different types of feature representation. The experimental results show that our CSDN accomplishes a good trade-off between analysis speed and segmentation accuracy.

Does image resolution impact chest X-ray based fine-grained Tuberculosis-consistent lesion segmentation?

Deep learning (DL) models are state-of-the-art in segmenting anatomical and disease regions of interest (ROIs) in medical images. Particularly, a large number of DL-based techniques have been reported using chest X-rays (CXRs). However, these models are reportedly trained on reduced image resolutions for reasons related to the lack of computational resources. Literature is sparse in discussing the optimal image resolution to train these models for segmenting the Tuberculosis (TB)-consistent lesions in CXRs. In this study, we investigated the performance variations using an Inception-V3 UNet model using various image resolutions with/without lung ROI cropping and aspect ratio adjustments, and (ii) identified the optimal image resolution through extensive empirical evaluations to improve TB-consistent lesion segmentation performance. We used the Shenzhen CXR dataset for the study which includes 326 normal patients and 336 TB patients. We proposed a combinatorial approach consisting of storing model snapshots, optimizing segmentation threshold and test-time augmentation (TTA), and averaging the snapshot predictions, to further improve performance with the optimal resolution. Our experimental results demonstrate that higher image resolutions are not always necessary, however, identifying the optimal image resolution is critical to achieving superior performance.

Observation of Flat Band, Dirac Nodal Lines and Topological Surface States in Kagome Superconductor CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$

A kagome lattice of 3d transition metals hosts flat bands, Dirac fermions and saddle points. It provides a versatile platform for achieving topological superconductivity, anomalous Hall effect, unconventional density wave order and quantum spin liquid when the strong correlation, spin-orbit coupling or magnetic order are involved in such a lattice. Here, using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations, we investigate the electronic structure of the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$, which is isostructural to the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb or Cs) kagome superconductors and possesses a perfect two-dimensional kagome network of Titanium. We directly observed a strikingly flat band derived from the local destructive interferences of Bloch wave functions within the kagome lattices. We also identify the type-II Dirac nodal loops around the Brillouin zone center, the type-III Dirac nodal loops around the zone corners and type-III Dirac nodal lines along the k$_z$ direction. In addition, around the Brillouin zone center, Z2 nontrivial topological surface states are also observed which is formed from the band inversion due to strong spin orbital coupling. The simultaneous existence of such multi-sets of nontrivial band structures in one kagome superconductor not only provides good opportunities to study related physics in the kagome lattice but also makes CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$ an ideal system to realize noval quantum phenomena by manipulating its chemical potential with chemical doping or pressure.

Nodal s$_\pm$ Pairing Symmetry in an Iron-Based Superconductor with only Hole Pockets

The origin of the high temperature superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors remains elusive after being extensively studied for more than a decade. Determination of the pairing symmetry is essential in understanding the superconductivity mechanism. In the iron-based superconductors that have hole pockets around the Brillouin zone center and electron pockets around the zone corners, the pairing symmetry is generally considered to be s$_\pm$, endowing a sign change in the superconducting gap between the hole and electron pockets. For the iron-based superconductors with only hole pockets, however, a couple of pairing scenarios have been proposed but the exact symmetry is still highly controversial. Here we report our determination of the pairing symmetry in KFe$_2$As$_2$ which is a prototypical iron-based superconductor with hole pockets both around the zone center and around the zone corners. By taking laser-based angle resolved photoemission measurements with super-high resolution and at ultra-low temperature, we have precisely determined the superconducting gap distribution and identified the locations of the gap nodes on all the Fermi surface around the zone center and the zone corners. The complete superconducting gap structure, in combination with the observation of the spin resonance in neutron scattering, provides strong evidence on the s$_\pm$ pairing symmetry in KFe$_2$As$_2$ with a gap sign reversal between the hole pockets around the zone center and the hole pockets around the zone corners. These results unify the pairing symmetry in the hole-doped iron-based superconductors and point to the spin fluctuation as the pairing glue in generating superconductivity.

Analysis of the $η_1(1855)$ as a $K\bar{K}_1(1400)$ molecular state

In this work, we study the radiative and strong decay of $S$-wave $K\bar{K}_1(1400)$ molecular state within the effective Lagrangians approach and find the relation between the $K\bar{K}_1(1400)$ molecular state and the newly observed $η_1(1855)$ state by comparing with the BESIII observation. The prediction indicates that the decay width can reach up to $182.97^{+2.79}_{-3.50}$ MeV, which can be confronted with the experimental data. If the $η_1(1855)$ could be $S$-wave $K\bar{K}_1(1400)$ molecular state, the $K\bar{K}^{*}π$ three-body decay provides the dominant contribution, not the $ηη^{'}$ channel found in the experiment. In addition, the partial width for $η_1(1855)\toγϕ$ can reach up to $17.95^{+0.21}_{-0.43}$ KeV. Those results can be measured in future experiments and used to test the nature of the $η_1(1855)$.

Electronic Origin of High-Tc Maximization and Persistence in Trilayer Cuprate Superconductors

In high temperature cuprate superconductors, it was found that the superconducting transition temperature Tc depends on the number of CuO2 planes (n) in the structural unit and the maximum Tc is realized in the trilayer system (n=3). It was also found that the trilayer superconductors exhibit an unusual phase diagram that Tc keeps nearly constant in the overdoped region which is in strong contrast to the Tc decrease usually found in other cuprate superconductors. The electronic origin of the Tc maximization in the trilayer superconductors and its high Tc persistence in the overdoped region remains unclear. By taking high resolution laser-based angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements, here we report our revelation of the microscopic origin of the unusual superconducting properties in the trilayer superconductors. For the first time we have observed the trilayer splitting in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d (Bi2223) superconductor. The observed Fermi surface, band structures, superconducting gap and the selective Bogoliubov band hybridizations can be well described by a three-layer interaction model. Quantitative information of the microscopic processes involving intra- and interlayer hoppings and pairings are extracted. The electronic origin of the maximum Tc in Bi2223 and the persistence of the high Tc in the overdoped region is revealed. These results provide key insights in understanding high Tc superconductivity and pave a way to further enhance Tc in the cuprate superconductors.

Encrypted Semantic Communication Using Adversarial Training for Privacy Preserving

Semantic communication is implemented based on shared background knowledge, but the sharing mechanism risks privacy leakage. In this letter, we propose an encrypted semantic communication system (ESCS) for privacy preserving, which combines universality and confidentiality. The universality is reflected in that all network modules of the proposed ESCS are trained based on a shared database, which is suitable for large-scale deployment in practical scenarios. Meanwhile, the confidentiality is achieved by symmetric encryption. Based on the adversarial training, we design an adversarial encryption training scheme to guarantee the accuracy of semantic communication in both encrypted and unencrypted modes. Experiment results show that the proposed ESCS with the adversarial encryption training scheme can perform well regardless of whether the semantic information is encrypted. It is difficult for the attacker to reconstruct the original semantic information from the eavesdropped message.

MaxViT: Multi-Axis Vision Transformer

Transformers have recently gained significant attention in the computer vision community. However, the lack of scalability of self-attention mechanisms with respect to image size has limited their wide adoption in state-of-the-art vision backbones. In this paper we introduce an efficient and scalable attention model we call multi-axis attention, which consists of two aspects: blocked local and dilated global attention. These design choices allow global-local spatial interactions on arbitrary input resolutions with only linear complexity. We also present a new architectural element by effectively blending our proposed attention model with convolutions, and accordingly propose a simple hierarchical vision backbone, dubbed MaxViT, by simply repeating the basic building block over multiple stages. Notably, MaxViT is able to ''see'' globally throughout the entire network, even in earlier, high-resolution stages. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our model on a broad spectrum of vision tasks. On image classification, MaxViT achieves state-of-the-art performance under various settings: without extra data, MaxViT attains 86.5% ImageNet-1K top-1 accuracy; with ImageNet-21K pre-training, our model achieves 88.7% top-1 accuracy. For downstream tasks, MaxViT as a backbone delivers favorable performance on object detection as well as visual aesthetic assessment. We also show that our proposed model expresses strong generative modeling capability on ImageNet, demonstrating the superior potential of MaxViT blocks as a universal vision module. Giant and Reversible Electronic Structure Evolution in a Magnetic Topological Material EuCd2As2

The electronic structure and the physical properties of quantum materials can be significantly altered by charge carrier doping and magnetic state transition. Here we report a discovery of a giant and reversible electronic structure evolution with doping in a magnetic topological material. By performing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on EuCd2As2,we found that a huge amount of hole doping can be introduced into the sample surface due to surface absorption. The electronic structure exhibits a dramatic change with the hole doping which can not be described by a rigid band shift. Prominent band splitting is observed at high doping which corresponds to a doping-induced magnetic transition at low temperature (below -15 K) from an antiferromagnetic state to a ferromagnetic state. These results have established a detailed electronic phase diagram of EuCd2As2 where the electronic structure and the magnetic structure change systematically and dramatically with the doping level. They further suggest that the transport, magnetic and topological properties of EuCd2As2 can be greatly modified by doping. These work will stimulate further investigations to explore for new phenomena and properties in doping this magnetic topological material.

Video object tracking based on YOLOv7 and DeepSORT

Multiple object tracking (MOT) is an important technology in the field of computer vision, which is widely used in automatic driving, intelligent monitoring, behavior recognition and other directions. Among the current popular MOT methods based on deep learning, Detection Based Tracking (DBT) is the most widely used in industry, and the performance of them depend on their object detection network. At present, the DBT algorithm with good performance and the most widely used is YOLOv5-DeepSORT. Inspired by YOLOv5-DeepSORT, with the proposal of YOLOv7 network, which performs better in object detection, we apply YOLOv7 as the object detection part to the DeepSORT, and propose YOLOv7-DeepSORT. After experimental evaluation, compared with the previous YOLOv5-DeepSORT, YOLOv7-DeepSORT performances better in tracking accuracy.

Conservation of the particle-hole symmetry in the pseudogap state in optimally-doped Bi2Sr2CuO6+δ superconductor

The pseudogap state is one of the most enigmatic characteristics in the anomalous normal state properties of the high temperature cuprate superconductors. A central issue is to reveal whether there is a symmetry breaking and which symmetries are broken across the pseudogap transition. By performing high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the optimally-doped Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+δ superconductor, we report the observations of the particle-hole symmetry conservation in both the superconducting state and the pseudogap state along the entire Fermi surface. These results provide key insights in understanding the nature of the pseudogap and its relation with high temperature superconductivity.

LECA: A Learned Approach for Efficient Cover-agnostic Watermarking

In this work, we present an efficient multi-bit deep image watermarking method that is cover-agnostic yet also robust to geometric distortions such as translation and scaling as well as other distortions such as JPEG compression and noise. Our design consists of a light-weight watermark encoder jointly trained with a deep neural network based decoder. Such a design allows us to retain the efficiency of the encoder while fully utilizing the power of a deep neural network. Moreover, the watermark encoder is independent of the image content, allowing users to pre-generate the watermarks for further efficiency. To offer robustness towards geometric transformations, we introduced a learned model for predicting the scale and offset of the watermarked images. Moreover, our watermark encoder is independent of the image content, making the generated watermarks universally applicable to different cover images. Experiments show that our method outperforms comparably efficient watermarking methods by a large margin.

Molecular states from $\bar{B}^{(*)}N$ interactions

In 2019, two new structures $Λ_b(6146)$ and $Λ_b(6152)$ were observed by the LHCb Collaboration at the invariant mass spectrum of $Λ_b^0π^{+}π^{-}$, which aroused a hot discussion about their inner structures. The $Λ_b(6146)$ and $Λ_b(6152)$ might still be molecular states because their masses are close to threshold of a $\bar{B}$ meson and a nucleon. In this work, we perform a systematical investigation of possible heavy baryonic molecular states from the $\bar{B}N$ interaction. Since the $\bar{B}N$ channel strongly couples to the $\bar{B}^{*}N$ channel, the possible $\bar{B}N-\bar{B}^{*}N$ bound states are also studied. The interaction of the system considered is described by the $t$-channel $σ$, $π$, $η$ ,$ω$, and $ρ$ mesons exchanges. By solving the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation with the obtained one-boson-exchange potentials, the $\bar{B}^{(*)}N$ bound states with different quantum numbers are searched. The calculation suggests that recently observed $Λ_b(6146)$ can be assigned as a $P$-wave $\bar{B}N$ molecular state with spin parity $J^P=3/2^{+}$ or a $\bar{B}N-\bar{B}^{*}N$ bound state. However, assignment of $Λ_b(6152)$ as an $F$-wave $\bar{B}N$ molecular is disfavored. The $Λ_b(6152)$ can be explained as meson-baryon molecular state with a small $\bar{B}N$ component. The calculation also predict the existence of two $S$-wave $\bar{B}N-\bar{B}^{*}N$ bound states that can be related to the experimentally observed $Λ_b(5912)$ and $Λ_b(5920)$.

Deep ensemble learning for segmenting tuberculosis-consistent manifestations in chest radiographs

Automated segmentation of tuberculosis (TB)-consistent lesions in chest X-rays (CXRs) using deep learning (DL) methods can help reduce radiologist effort, supplement clinical decision-making, and potentially result in improved patient treatment. The majority of works in the literature discuss training automatic segmentation models using coarse bounding box annotations. However, the granularity of the bounding box annotation could result in the inclusion of a considerable fraction of false positives and negatives at the pixel level that may adversely impact overall semantic segmentation performance. This study (i) evaluates the benefits of using fine-grained annotations of TB-consistent lesions and (ii) trains and constructs ensembles of the variants of U-Net models for semantically segmenting TB-consistent lesions in both original and bone-suppressed frontal CXRs. We evaluated segmentation performance using several ensemble methods such as bitwise AND, bitwise-OR, bitwise-MAX, and stacking. We observed that the stacking ensemble demonstrated superior segmentation performance (Dice score: 0.5743, 95% confidence interval: (0.4055,0.7431)) compared to the individual constituent models and other ensemble methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to apply ensemble learning to improve fine-grained TB-consistent lesion segmentation performance.

Analysis and Optimization of A Double-IRS Cooperatively Assisted System with A Quasi-Static Phase Shift Design

The analysis and optimization of single intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted systems have been extensively studied, whereas little is known regarding multiple-IRS-assisted systems. This paper investigates the analysis and optimization of a double-IRS cooperatively assisted downlink system, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) serves a single-antenna user with the help of two multi-element IRSs, connected by an inter-IRS channel. The channel between any two nodes is modeled with Rician fading. The BS adopts the instantaneous CSI-adaptive maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) beamformer, and the two IRSs adopt a cooperative quasi-static phase shift design. The goal is to maximize the average achievable rate, which can be reflected by the average channel power of the equivalent channel between the BS and user, at a low phase adjustment cost and computational complexity. First, we obtain tractable expressions of the average channel power of the equivalent channel in the general Rician factor, pure line of sight (LoS), and pure non-line of sight (NLoS) regimes, respectively. Then, we jointly optimize the phase shifts of the two IRSs to maximize the average channel power of the equivalent channel in these regimes. The optimization problems are challenging non-convex problems. We obtain globally optimal closed-form solutions for some cases and propose computationally efficient iterative algorithms to obtain stationary points for the other cases. Next, we compare the computational complexity for optimizing the phase shifts and the optimal average channel power of the double-IRS cooperatively assisted system with those of a counterpart single-IRS-assisted system at a large number of reflecting elements in the three regimes. Finally, we numerically demonstrate notable gains of the proposed solutions over the existing solutions at different system parameters.

MAXIM: Multi-Axis MLP for Image Processing

Recent progress on Transformers and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) models provide new network architectural designs for computer vision tasks. Although these models proved to be effective in many vision tasks such as image recognition, there remain challenges in adapting them for low-level vision. The inflexibility to support high-resolution images and limitations of local attention are perhaps the main bottlenecks. In this work, we present a multi-axis MLP based architecture called MAXIM, that can serve as an efficient and flexible general-purpose vision backbone for image processing tasks. MAXIM uses a UNet-shaped hierarchical structure and supports long-range interactions enabled by spatially-gated MLPs. Specifically, MAXIM contains two MLP-based building blocks: a multi-axis gated MLP that allows for efficient and scalable spatial mixing of local and global visual cues, and a cross-gating block, an alternative to cross-attention, which accounts for cross-feature conditioning. Both these modules are exclusively based on MLPs, but also benefit from being both global and `fully-convolutional', two properties that are desirable for image processing. Our extensive experimental results show that the proposed MAXIM model achieves state-of-the-art performance on more than ten benchmarks across a range of image processing tasks, including denoising, deblurring, deraining, dehazing, and enhancement while requiring fewer or comparable numbers of parameters and FLOPs than competitive models. The source code and trained models will be available at \url{https://github.com/google-research/maxim}.

Deep 3D-to-2D Watermarking: Embedding Messages in 3D Meshes and Extracting Them from 2D Renderings

Digital watermarking is widely used for copyright protection. Traditional 3D watermarking approaches or commercial software are typically designed to embed messages into 3D meshes, and later retrieve the messages directly from distorted/undistorted watermarked 3D meshes. However, in many cases, users only have access to rendered 2D images instead of 3D meshes. Unfortunately, retrieving messages from 2D renderings of 3D meshes is still challenging and underexplored. We introduce a novel end-to-end learning framework to solve this problem through: 1) an encoder to covertly embed messages in both mesh geometry and textures; 2) a differentiable renderer to render watermarked 3D objects from different camera angles and under varied lighting conditions; 3) a decoder to recover the messages from 2D rendered images. From our experiments, we show that our model can learn to embed information visually imperceptible to humans, and to retrieve the embedded information from 2D renderings that undergo 3D distortions. In addition, we demonstrate that our method can also work with other renderers, such as ray tracers and real-time renderers with and without fine-tuning.

Doubly Coupled Designs for Computer Experiments with both Qualitative and Quantitative Factors

Computer experiments with both qualitative and quantitative input variables occur frequently in many scientific and engineering applications. How to choose input settings for such experiments is an important issue for accurate statistical analysis, uncertainty quantification and decision making. Sliced Latin hypercube designs are the first systematic approach to address this issue. However, it comes with the increasing cost associated with an increasing large number of level combinations of the qualitative factors. For the reason of run size economy, marginally coupled designs were proposed in which the design for the quantitative factors is a sliced Latin hypercube design with respect to each qualitative factor. The drawback of such designs is that the corresponding data may not be able to capture the effects between any two (and more) qualitative factors and quantitative factors. To balance the run size and design efficiency, we propose a new type of designs, doubly coupled designs, where the design points for the quantitative factors form a sliced Latin hypercube design with respect to the levels of any qualitative factor and with respect to the level combinations of any two qualitative factors, respectively. The proposed designs have the better stratification property between the qualitative and quantitative factors compared with marginally coupled designs. The existence of the proposed designs is established. Several construction methods are introduced, and the properties of the resulting designs are also studied.
