Fundamental Plane of Black Hole Activity in Quiescent Regime

A correlation among the radio luminosity ($L_{\rm R}$), X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$), and black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and black hole binaries is known to exist and is called the "Fundamental Plane" of black hole activity. Yuan & Cui (2005) predicts that the radio/X-ray correlation index, $ξ_{\rm X}$, changes from $ξ_{\rm X}\approx 0.6$ to $ξ_{\rm X}\approx 1.2-1.3$ when $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd}$ decreases below a critical value $\sim 10^{-6}$. While many works favor such a change, there are also several works claiming the opposite. In this paper, we gather from literature a largest quiescent AGN (defined as $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd} < 10^{-6}$) sample to date, consisting of $75$ sources. We find that these quiescent AGNs follow a $ξ_{\rm X}\approx 1.23$ radio/X-ray relationship, in excellent agreement with the Yuan \& Cui prediction. The reason for the discrepancy between the present result and some previous works is that their samples contain not only quiescent sources but also "normal" ones (i.e., $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd} > 10^{-6}$). In this case, the quiescent sources will mix up with those normal ones in $L_{\rm R}$ and $L_{\rm X}$. The value of $ξ_{\rm X}$ will then be between $0.6$ and $\sim1.3$, with the exact value being determined by the sample composition, i.e., the fraction of the quiescent and normal sources. Based on this result, we propose that a more physical way to study the Fundamental Plane is to replace $L_{\rm R}$ and $L_{\rm X}$ with $L_{\rm R}/L_{\rm Edd}$ and $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd}$, respectively.

Hunting the Gluon Orbital Angular Momentum at the Electron-Ion Collider

Applying the connection between the parton Wigner distribution and orbital angular momentum (OAM), we investigate the probe of the gluon OAM in hard scattering processes at the planned electron-ion collider. We show that the single longitudinal target-spin asymmetry in the hard diffractive dijet production is very sensitive to the gluon OAM distribution. The associated spin asymmetry leads to a characteristic azimuthal angular correlation of $\sin(ϕ_q -ϕ_Δ)$, where $ϕ_Δ$ and $ϕ_q$ are the azimuthal angles of the proton momentum transfer and the relative transverse momentum between the quark-antiquark pair. This study will enable a first measurement of the gluon OAM in the proton spin sum rule.

Single spin asymmetry in forward $pA$ collisions II: Fragmentation contribution

We compute the twist-three fragmentation contribution to the transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) in light hadron production $p^\uparrow p\to hX$ and $p^\uparrow A\to hX$ including the gluon saturation effect in the unpolarized nucleon/nucleus. Together with the results in our previous paper, this completes the full evaluation of the SSA in this process in the "hybrid" formalism. We argue that the dependence of SSAs on the atomic mass number in the forward region can elucidate the relative importance of the soft gluon pole contribution from the twist-three quark-gluon-quark correlation in the polarized nucleon and the twist-three fragmentation contribution from the final state hadron.

Medium Induced Transverse Momentum Broadening in Hard Processes

Using deep inelastic scattering on a large nucleus as an example, we consider the transverse momentum broadening of partons in hard processes in the presence of medium. We find that one can factorize the vacuum radiation contribution and medium related $P_T$ broadening effects into the Sudakov factor and medium dependent distributions, respectively. Our derivations can be generalized to other hard processes, such as dijet productions, which can be used as a probe to measure the medium $P_T$ broadening effects in heavy ion collisions when Sudakov effects are not overwhelming.

Single Spin Asymmetry in Forward $pA$ Collisions

We compute the transverse single spin asymmetry in light hadron production $p^\uparrow p\to hX$ and $p^\uparrow A\to hX$ including the gluon saturation effect in the unpolarized nucleon/nucleus. In the forward (large-$x_F$) region, the dominant contribution comes from the so-called derivative term associated with the soft gluonic pole. This leads to the cancellation of nuclear effects in $A_N$ which can be tested at RHIC. We also show that the soft fermionic pole disappears in the saturation environment.

On the evolution of a rogue wave along the orthogonal direction of the ($t,x$)-plane

The localization characters of the first-order rogue wave (RW) solution $u$ of the Kundu-Eckhaus equation is studied in this paper. We discover a full process of the evolution for the contour line with height $c^2+d$ along the orthogonal direction of the ($t,x$)-plane for a first-order RW $|u|^2$: A point at height $9c^2$ generates a convex curve for $3c^2\leq d<8c^2$, whereas it becomes a concave curve for $0<d<3c^2$, next it reduces to a hyperbola on asymptotic plane (i.e. equivalently $d=0$), and the two branches of the hyperbola become two separate convex curves when $-c^2<d<0$, and finally they reduce to two separate points at $d=-c^2$. Using the contour line method, the length, width, and area of the RW at height $c^2+d (0<d<8c^2)$ , i.e. above the asymptotic plane, are defined. We study the evolutions of three above-mentioned localization characters on $d$ through analytical and visual methods. The phase difference between the Kundu-Eckhaus and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation is also given by an explicit formula.

Exploring the accretion model of M87 and 3C 84 with the Faraday rotation measure observations

Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) are believed to be powered by an accretion-jet model, consisting of an inner advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), an outer truncated standard thin disk, and a jet. But model degeneracy still exists in this framework. For example, the X-ray emission can originate from either the ADAF or jet. The aim of the present work is to check these models with the Faraday rotation measure (RM) observations recently detected for two LLAGNs, M87 and 3C 84, in the sub-mm band. For M87, we find that the RM predicted by the model in which the X-ray emission originates from the ADAF is larger than the observed upper limit of RM by over two orders of magnitude, while the model in which the X-ray emission originates from the jet predicts a RM lower than the observed upper limit. For 3C 84, the sub-mm emission is found to be dominated by the jet component, while the Faraday screen is attributed to the ADAFs. This scenario can naturally explain the observed {\it external} origin of the RM and why RM is found to be stable during a two-year interval although the sub-mm emission increases at the same period.

Long Range Correlation in Higgs Boson Plus Two Jets Production at the LHC

We study Higgs boson plus two high energy jets production at the LHC in the kinematics where the two jets are well separated in rapidity. The partonic processes are dominated by the t-channel weak boson fusion (WBF) and gluon fusion (GF) contributions. We derive the associated QCD resummation formalism for the correlation analysis where the total transverse momentum q_\perp of the Higgs boson and two jets is small. Because of different color structures, the resummation results lead to distinguished behaviors: the WBF contribution peaks at relative low q_\perp while all GF channel contributions are strongly de-correlated and spread to a much wider q_\perp range. By applying a kinematic cut on q_\perp, one can effectively increase the WBF signal to the GF background by a significant factor. This greatly strengthens the ability to investigate the WBF channel in Higgs boson production and study the couplings of Higgs to electroweak bosons.

Probing Transverse Momentum Broadening in Heavy Ion Collisions

We study the dijet azimuthal de-correlation in relativistic heavy ion collisions as an important probe of the transverse momentum broadening effects of a high energy jet traversing the quark-gluon plasma. We take into account both the soft gluon radiation in vacuum associated with the Sudakov logarithms and the jet P_T-broadening effects in the QCD medium. We find that the Sudakov effects are dominant at the LHC, while the medium effects can play an important role at RHIC energies. This explains why the LHC experiments have not yet observed sizable P_T-broadening effects in the measurement of dijet azimuthal correlations in heavy ion collisions. Future investigations at RHIC will provide a unique opportunity to study the P_T-broadening effects and help to pin down the underlying mechanism for jet energy loss in a hot and dense medium.

Magneto-hydrodynamical Numerical simulation of wind production from black hole hot accretion flows at very large radii

Numerical simulations of black hole hot accretion flows have shown the existence of strong wind. Those works focus only on the region close to black hole thus it is unknown whether or where the wind production stops at large radii. To address this question, Bu et al. (2016) have performed hydrodynamic (HD) simulations by taking into account the gravitational potential of both the black hole and the nuclear star clusters. The latter is assumed to be $\propto σ^2 \ln(r)$, with $σ$ being the velocity dispersion of stars and $r$ be the distance from the center of the galaxy. It was found that when the gravity is dominated by nuclear stars, i.e., outside of radius $R_A\equiv GM_{\rm BH}/σ^2$, winds can no longer be produced. That work, however, neglects the magnetic field, which is believed to play a crucial dynamical role in the accretion and thus must be taken into account. In this paper, we revisit this problem by performing magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations. We confirm the result of Bu et al. (2016), namely wind can't be produced at the region of $R>R_A$. Our result, combined with the results of Yuan et al. (2015), indicates that the formula describing the mass flux of wind $\dot{M}_{\rm wind}=\dot{M}_{\rm BH}(r/20r_s)$ can only be applied to the region where the black hole potential is dominant. Here $\dot{M}_{\rm BH}$ is the mass accretion rate at the black hole horizon and the value of $R_A$ is similar to the Bondi radius.

Resummation of High Order Corrections in Higgs Boson Plus Jet Production at the LHC

We study the effect of multiple parton radiation to Higgs boson plus jet production at the LHC, by applying the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism to resum large logarithmic contributions to all orders in the expansion of the strong interaction coupling. We show that the appropriate resummation scale should be the jet transverse momentum, rather than the partonic center of mass energy which has been normally used in the TMD resummation formalism. Furthermore, the transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson, particularly near the lower cut-off applied on the jet transverse momentum, can only be reliably predicted by the resummation calculation which is free of the so-called Sudakov-shoulder singularity problem, present in fixed-order calculations.

Sudakov Resummations in Mueller-Navelet Dijet Production

In high energy hadron-hadron collisions, dijet production with large rapidity separation proposed by Mueller and Navelet, is one of the most interesting processes which can help us to directly access the well-known Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov evolution dynamics. The objective of this work is to study the Sudakov resummation of Mueller-Navelet jets. Through the one-loop calculation, Sudakov type logarithms are obtained for this process when the produced dijets are almost back-to-back. These results could play an important role in the phenomenological study of dijet correlations with large rapidity separation at the LHC.

Thick Accretion Disk Model for Ultraluminous Supersoft Sources

We propose a geometrically thick, super-Eddington accretion disk model, where an optically thick wind is not necessary, to understand ultraluminous supersoft sources (ULSs). For high mass accretion rates $\dot M \ga 30\dot M_{\rm Edd}$ and not small inclination angles $θ\ga 25^{\circ}$, where $\dot M_{\rm Edd}$ is the Eddington accretion rate, the hard photons from the hot inner region may be shaded by the geometrically thick inner disk, and therefore only the soft photons from the outer thin disk and the outer photosphere of the thick disk can reach the observer. Our model can naturally explain the approximate relation between the typical thermal radius and the thermal temperature, $R_{\rm bb} \propto T_{\rm bb}^{-2}$. Moreover, the thick disk model can unify ULSs and normal ultraluminous X-ray sources, where the different observational characteristics are probably related to the inclination angle and the mass accretion rate. By comparing our model with the optically thick outflow model, we find that less mass accretion rate is required in our model.

Two-dimensional inflow-wind solution of black hole accretion with an evenly symmetric magnetic field

We solve the two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations of black hole accretion with the presence of magnetic field. The field includes a turbulent component, whose role is represented by the viscosity, and a large-scale ordered component. The latter is further assumed to be evenly symmetric with the equatorial plane. The equations are solved in the $r-θ$ plane of a spherical coordinate by assuming time-steady and radially self-similar. An inflow-wind solution is found. Around the equatorial plane, the gas is inflowing; while above and below the equatorial plane at a certain critical $θ$ angle, $θ\sim 47^{\circ}$, the inflow changes its direction of radial motion and becomes wind. The driving forces are analyzed and found to be the centrifugal force and the gradient of gas and magnetic pressure. The properties of wind are also calculated. The specific angular momentum of wind is found to be significantly larger than that of inflow, thus wind can transfer angular momentum outward. These analytical results are compared to those obtained by the trajectory analysis based on MHD numerical simulation data and good agreements are found.

Probing the Small-$x$ Gluon Tomography in Correlated Hard Diffractive Dijet Production in DIS

We investigate the close connection between the quantum phase space Wigner distribution of small-$x$ gluons and the color dipole scattering amplitude, and propose to study it experimentally in the hard diffractive dijet production at the planned electron-ion collider. The angular correlation between the nucleon recoiled momentum and the dijet transverse momentum will probe the nontrivial correlation in the phase space Wigner distribution. This experimental study will not only provide us with three-dimensional tomographic pictures of gluons inside high energy proton, but also give a unique and interesting signal for the small-$x$ dynamics with QCD evolution effects.

Hydrodynamical numerical simulation of wind production from black hole hot accretion flows at very large radii

Previous works show strong winds exist in hot accretion flows around black holes. Those works focus only on the region close to the black hole thus it is unknown whether or where the wind production stops at large radii. In this paper, we investigate this problem by hydrodynamical simulations. We take into account gravities of both the black hole and the nuclear star clusters. For the latter, we assume that the velocity dispersion of stars is a constant and its gravitational potential $\propto σ^2 \ln (r)$, where $σ$ is the velocity dispersion of stars and $r$ is the distance from the center of the galaxy. We focus on the region where the gravitational potential is dominated by the star cluster. We find, same as the accretion flow at small radii, the mass inflow rate decreases inward and the flow is convectively unstable. However, trajectory analysis shows that there is very few wind launched from the flow. Our result, combined with the results of Yuan et al. (2015), indicates that the mass flux of wind launched from hot accretion flow $\dot{M}_{\rm wind}=\dot{M}_{\rm BH}(r/20r_s)$, with $r\la R_A\equiv GM_{\rm BH}/σ^2$. Here $\dot{M}_{\rm BH}$ is accretion rate at black hole horizon. $R_A$ is similar to Bondi radius. We argue that the inward decrease of inflow rate is not because of mass loss via wind, but because of convective motion. The disappearance of wind outside of $R_A$ must be because of the change of the gravitational potential, but the exact reason remains to be probed.

Interpreting the radio/X-ray correlation of black hole sources based on the accretion-jet model

Two types of correlations between the radio and X-ray luminosities ($L_R$ and $L_X$) have been found in black hole X-ray binaries. For some sources, they follow the `original' type of correlation which is described by a single power-law. Later it was found that some other sources follow a different correlation consisting of three power-law branches, with each branch having different power-law indexes. In this work, we explain these two types of correlation under the coupled accretion--jet model. We attribute the difference between these two types of sources to the different value of viscosity parameter $α$. One possible reason for different $α$ is the different configuration of magnetic field in the accretion material coming from the companion stars. For the `single power-law' sources, their $α$ is high; so their accretion is always in the mode of advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) for the whole range of X-ray luminosity. For those `hybrid power-law' sources, the value of $α$ is small so their accretion mode changes from an ADAF to a luminous hot accretion flow, and eventually to two-phase accretion as the accretion rate increases. Because the dependence of radiative efficiency on the mass accretion rate is different for these three accretion modes, different power-law indexes in the $L_R--L_X$ correlation are expected. Constraints on the ratio of the mass loss rate into the jet and the mass accretion rate in the accretion flow are obtained, which can be tested in future by radiative magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations of jet formation.

Spin Decomposition of Electron in QED

We perform a systematic study on the spin decomposition of an electron in QED at one-loop order. It is found that the electron orbital angular momentum defined in Jaffe-Manohar and Ji spin sum rules agrees with each other, and the so-called potential angular momentum vanishes at this order. The calculations are performed in both dimensional regularization and Pauli-Villars regularization for the ultraviolet divergences, and they lead to consistent results. We further investigate the calculations in terms of light-front wave functions, and find a missing contribution from the instantaneous interaction in light-front quantization. This clarifies the confusing issues raised recently in the literature on the spin decomposition of an electron, and will help to consolidate the spin physics program for nucleons in QCD.
