The Structure and Variability of Sagittarius A*: Zooming in to the Supermassive Black Hole at the Galactic Center

The Galactic center provides a unique astrophysical laboratory for us to study various astrophysical processes. In this paper, we review and outline the latest results from observations of Sgr~A$^*$ in terms of source structure and variations in flux density. Sgr~A$^*$ phenomenon represents a typical case of low radiative efficiency accretion flow surrounding a supermassive black hole in low luminosity AGNs. Many pending astrophysical problems found from observations of Sgr A$^*$ have challenged the existing astrophysical theories. Current theoretical models of Sgr A$^*$ are also reviewed.

A Jet-ADAF model for Sgr A*

The recent {\em Chandra} observation of the radio source at the center of our Galaxy, Sgr A$^*$, puts new constraints on its theoretical models. The spectrum is very soft, and the source is rapidly variable. We consider different models to explain the observations. We find that the features of the x-ray spectrum can be marginally explained with an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) model while it does not well fit the radio spectrum. An ADAF with strong winds (ADIOS) model is not favored if we assume that the wind does not radiate. Alternatively, we propose a coupled jet plus accretion disk model to explain the observations for Sgr A$^*$. The accretion flow is described as an ADAF fed by Bondi-Hoyle accretion of hot plasma in the Galactic Center region. A small fraction of the accretion flow is ejected near the black hole, forming a jet after passing through a shock. As a result, the electron temperature increases to $\sim 2 \times 10^{11}{\rm K}$, which is about 10 times higher than the highest temperature attained in the ADAF. The model is self-consistent since the main jet parameters are determined by the underlying accretion disk at the inner edge. The emergent spectrum of Sgr A$^*$ is the sum of the emission from jet and underlying ADAF. The very strong Comptonization of synchrotron emission from the jet dominates the bremsstrahlung from the ADAF, therefore, a very short variability timescale is expected and the predicted X-ray slope and the radio spectrum is in very good agreement with the observations.

The Nature of the 10 Kilosecond X-ray Flare in Sgr A*

The X-ray mission Chandra has observed a dramatic X-ray flare -- a brightening by a factor of 50 for only three hours -- from Sgr A*, the Galactic Center supermassive black hole. Sgr A* has never shown variability of this amplitude in the radio and we therefore argue that a jump of this order in the accretion rate does not seem the likely cause. Based on our model for jet-dominated emission in the quiescent state of Sgr A*, we suggest that the flare is a consequence of extra electron heating near the black hole. This can either lead to direct heating of thermal electrons to T_e~6*10^11 K and significantly increased synchrotron-self Compton emission, or result from non-thermal particle acceleration with increased synchrotron radiation and electron Lorentz factors up to gamma_e>10^5. While the former scenario is currently favored by the data, simultaneous VLBI, submm, mid-infrared and X-ray observations should ultimately be able to distinguish between the two cases.

Doping and temperature dependence of incommensurate antiferromagnetism in underdoped lanthanum cuprates

The doping, temperature and energy dependence of the dynamical spin structure factors of the underdoped lanthanum cuprates in the normal state is studied within the t-J model using the fermion-spin transformation technique. Incommensurate peaks are found at $[(1\pmδ)π,π]$, $[π,(1\pmδ)π]$ at relatively low temperatures with $δ$ linearly increasing with doping at the beginning and then saturating at higher dopings. These peaks broaden and weaken in amplitude with temperature and energy, in good agreement with experiments. The theory also predicts a rotation of these peaks by $π/4$ at even higher temperatures, being shifted to $[(1\pm δ/\sqrt{2})π,(1\pm δ/\sqrt{2})π]$.

Rapidity dependence of large-p_t hadron production at RHIC

We study the dependence of parton energy loss (quenching) on rapidity in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC. This can provides invaluable information on the density of the medium, which should be more dilute going away from mid-rapidity, thereby reducing the effect of quenching. We predict a clear effect at moderate transverse momenta $\sim$ 3 GeV.

Polarizations of J/ψand ψ' in hadroproduction at Tevatron in the k_t factorization approach

We present a calculation for the polarizations of $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ produced in the hadron collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. Various color octet channels including ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$, ${}^3P_J^{(8)}$, and ${}^3S_1^{(8)}$ as well as contributions from $χ_{cJ}$ decays are considered in the $k_t$ factorization approach. We find that in a rather wide range of the transverse momenta of $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$, the production rates could be dominated by the ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ channel, and the predicted polarizations from the ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ channel and $χ_{cJ}$ feeddown contributions are roughly compatible with the preliminary CDF data. This might provide a possible release from the conflict between the NRQCD collinear parton model calculations and the CDF data.

Enhanced Minijet Production in $A-A$ Collisions from Gluons with Large Transverse Momenta

We find supersaturation for the intrinsic gluon distribution of nuclei, i.e. the low $x$ unintegrated nuclear gluon distribution peaks at intermediate transverse momenta $k_t=Q_s$ and vanishes at zero $k_t$. Taking into account the intrinsic transverse momenta of the gluons and the saturation scale $p_s$ of the produced gluons, we calculate the minijet cross section arising from gluon gluon scattering for RHIC energies. For central collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200GeV$ the saturation scale $p_s \approx 1.4$ GeV is larger due to intrinsic $k_t$ effects and increases with energy. Our theoretical results on charged particle multiplicity agree very well with the recent experimental data from RHIC.

Heavy quarkonium production in double Pomeron exchange processes in perturbative QCD

We calculate the heavy quarkonium production in double pomeron exchange processes in perturbative QCD by using two-gluon exchange model. For the $P$-wave $χ_J$ productions, we find $χ_1$ and $χ_2$ production amplitudes which vanish in the forward scattering limit. We also calculate direct $J/ψ(Υ)+γ$ production in the same approach, and these direct contributions are much smaller than the feeddown contributions from the $P$-wave states.

χ_{cJ} polarizations at the Fermilab Tevatron

We propose the measurement of $χ_{cJ}$ polarizations at high energy hadron colliders to study heavy quarkonium production mechanism. We find that the color-singlet model in the $k_t$ factorization approach predicts very different behavior for $χ_{cJ}$ polarizations at the Fermilab Tevatron compared with the NRQCD predictions in the collinear parton model. In the color-singlet $k_t$ factorization approach, for both $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ productions, the helicity $h=0$ states dominate over other helicity states at large $p_T$. These properties are very useful in distinguishing between the two production mechanisms which are related to the interesting issue of $Jψ$ and $ψ'$ polarizations, and may provide a crucial test for the $k_t$ factorization approach.

Luminous hot accretion disks

We find a new two-temperature hot branch of equilibrium solutions for stationary accretion disks around black holes. In units of Eddington accretion rate defined as $10L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$, the accretion rates to which these solutions correspond are within the range $\dot{m}_1 \la \dot{m} \la 1$, here $\dot{m}_1$ is the critical rate of advecti$. In these solutions, the energy loss rate of the ions by Coulomb energy transfer between the ions and electrons is larger than the viscously heating rate and it is the advective heating together with the viscous dissipation that balances the Coulomb cooling of ions. When $\dot{m}_1 \la \dot{m} \la \dot{m}_2$, where $\dot{m}_2 \sim 5 \dot{m}_1 < 1$, the accretion flow remains hot throughout the disk. When $\dot{m}_2 \la \dot{m}\la 1$, Coulomb interaction will cool the inner region of the disk within a certain radius ($r_{\rm tr} \sim$ several -- tens of Schwarzschild radii or larger depending on the accretion rate and the outer boundary condition) and the disk will collapse onto the equatorial plane and form an optically thick cold annulus. Compared to ADAF, these hot solutions are much more luminous because of the high accretion rate and efficiency, therefore, we name them luminous hot accretion disks.

Inelastic electroproduction of $η_c$ at ep colliders

Using the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism, we calculate the electroproduction cross sections of $η_c$ in ep collisions, including the contribution from both the transverse photon and the longitudinal photon. For this process the color-singlet contribution vanishes up to the next to leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The dominant contribution comes from the color-octet ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ subprocess. The nonperturbative color-octet matrix element of ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ of $η_c$ is related to that of ${}^3S_1^{(8)}$ of $J/ψ$ by heavy quark spin symmetry, and the latter can be determined from the direct production of $J/ψ$ at large transverse momentum at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement of this process at DESY HERA can be viewed as another independent test for the color-octet production mechanism

Possible evidence for the disk origin for the powering of jets in Sgr A* and nearby elliptical galaxies

The predicted radio flux for nearby ellipticals by the canonical ADAF(advection-dominated accretion flow) model is well above the observations. If the mass accretion rate favored by the numerical simulation were adopted, the ADAF model would also significantly overpredict the radio flux of Sgr A*. On the observational side, strong evidence for the existence of jets in Sgr A$^*$ and these ellipticals has been obtained. Based on these facts, we propose a truncated ADAF model for these sources. We assume that the accretion disk is truncated at a certain radius within which a jet forms by extracting the energy of the disk therefore the radio flux is greatly suppressed due to the radiative truncation of the disk and the fits to the observational data are excellent. For example, for Sgr A*, the model fits the spectrum very well from radio including the ``excess'' below the break frequency to hard X-ray under a high accretion rate near the simulation value; for M87, the predicted upper limit of the jet location is 24 $R_g$, in excellent agreement with the observational result of < 30 $R_g$. The success of the model supplies a possible piece of evidence for the disk rather than the hole origin for the powering of jets.

Effect of the additional second neighbor hopping on the spin dynamics in the t-J model

The effect of the additional second neighbor hopping t' on the spin dynamics in the t-J model is studied within the fermion-spin theory. Although the additional second neighbor hopping t' is systematically accompanied with the reduction of the dynamical spin structure factor and susceptibility, the qualitative behaviors of the dynamical spin structure factor and susceptibility are the same as in the case of t-J model. It is also shown that the integrated dynamical spin structure factor is almost t' independent in the underdoped regime.

Normal-state pseudogap and electron flat dispersion in copper oxide materials

The anomalous momentum and doping dependence of the electron spectral function and electron dispersion for copper oxide materials in the underdoped regime are studied within the t-J model. It is shown that the electron spectrum is changed with dopings, and the electron dispersion exhibits a flat band around ($π$,0) point in the Brillouin zone, which leads to the normal-state pseudogap formation. The theoretical results are consistent with the experiments and numerical simulations.

Influence of the additional second neighbor hopping on the spin response in the t-J model

The influence of the additional second neighbor hopping t' on the spin response of the t-J model in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes is studied within the fermion-spin theory. Although the additional second neighbor hopping t' is systematically accompanied with the reduction of the dynamical spin structure factor and susceptibility, the qualitative behavior of the dynamical spin structure factor and susceptibility of the t-t'-J model is the same as in the case of t-J model. The integrated dynamical spin structure factor spectrum is almost t' independent, and the integrated dynamical spin susceptibility still shows the particularly universal behavior as $I(ω,T)\propto {\rm arctan}[a_{1}ω/T+a_{3}(ω/T)^{3}]$.

A New Parameter In Accretion Disk Model

Taking optically thin accretion flows as an example, we investigate the dynamics and the emergent spectra of accretion flows with different outer boundary conditions (OBCs) and find that OBC plays an important role in accretion disk model. This is because the accretion equations describing the behavior of accretion flows are a set of {\em differential} equations, therefore, accretion is intrinsically an initial-value problem. We argue that optically thick accretion flow should also show OBC-dependent behavior. The result means that we should seriously consider the initial physical state of the accretion flow such as its angular momentum and its temperature. An application example to Sgr A$^*$ is presented.

The role of the outer boundary condition in accretion disk models: theory and application

The influence of the outer boundary condition (OBC) on the dynamics and radiation of optically thin accretion flow is investigated. Bremsstrahlung and synchrotron radiations amplified by Comptonization are taken into account and two-temperature plasma assumption is adopted. The three OBCs we adopted are the temperatures of the electrons and ions and the specific angular momentum of the accretion flow at a certain outer boundary. We find that when the general parameters such as the mass accretion rate and the viscous parameter are fixed, the peak flux at various bands such as radio, IR and X-ray, can differ by as large as several orders of magnitude under different OBCs in our example. Our results indicate that OBC is both dynamically and radiatively important therefore should be regarded as a new ``parameter'' in accretion disk models. We apply the above results to the compact radio source Sgr A* and find that the discrepancy between the mass accretion rate favored by ADAF models in the literature and that favored by the three dimensional hydrodynamical simulation can be naturally resolved by seriously considering the outer boundary condition of the accretion flow.
