EIC Physics from An All-Silicon Tracking Detector

The proposed electron-ion collider has a rich physics program to study the internal structure of protons and heavy nuclei. This program will impose strict requirements on detector design. This paper explores how these requirements can be satisfied using an all-silicon tracking detector, by consideration of three representative probes: heavy flavor hadrons, jets, and exclusive vector mesons.

Understanding Patterns of Users Who Repost Censored Posts on Weibo

In this study, we focus on understanding patterns of users whose repost contents would later be censored on Weibo, a counterpart of Twitter in China as a social media platform. Little is known about the way regulations and censorship work in this indigenous platform and what role it plays in affecting users' expression of ideas. We collect over a million reposts from over 18,000 users and investigate the patterns of users whose reposts contain content that is no longer visible to the public, from the perspective of user location, device, gender, social capital as well as certified status. We find that user characteristics play an important role in affecting behaviors on Weibo.

From haloes to galaxies -- II. The fundamental relations in star formation and quenching

Star formation and quenching are two of the most important processes in galaxy formation and evolution. We explore in the local Universe the interrelationships among key integrated galaxy properties, including stellar mass $M_*$, star formation rate (SFR), specific SFR (sSFR), molecular gas mass $M_{\rm H_2}$, star formation efficiency (SFE) of the molecular gas and molecular gas to stellar mass ratio $μ$. We aim to identify the most fundamental scaling relations among these key galaxy properties and their interrelationships. We show the integrated $M_{\rm H_2}$-SFR, SFR-$M_*$ and $M_{\rm H_2}$-$M_*$ relation can be simply transformed from the $μ$-sSFR, SFE-$μ$ and SFE-sSFR relation, respectively. The transformation, in principle, can increase or decrease the scatter of each relation. Interestingly, we find the latter three relations all have significantly smaller scatter than the former three corresponding relations. We show the probability to achieve the observed small scatter by accident is extremely close to zero. This suggests that the smaller scatters of the latter three relations are driven by a more fundamental physical connection among these quantities. We then show the large scatters in the former relations are due to their systematic dependence on other galaxy properties, and on star formation and quenching process. We propose the sSFR-$μ$-SFE relation as the Fundamental Formation Relation (FFR), which governs the star formation and quenching process, and provides a simple framework to study galaxy evolution. Other scaling relations, including integrated Kennicutt-Schmidt law, star-forming main sequence and molecular gas main sequence, can all be derived from the FFR.

Flux ropes in SANE disks

Three-dimensional numerical simulations of a hot accretion flow around a supermassive black hole are performed using the general relativity magneto-hydrodynamic (GRMHD) code Athena++. We focus on the case of SANE, with the initial magnetic field consisting of multiple loops with oppositely directed poloidal magnetic field in the torus. Using the simulation data, we investigate the formation of flux ropes, follow the forming of flux ropes atop the disk, and their release into corona.

Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback in an Elliptical Galaxy with the Most Updated AGN Physics: Parameter Explorations

In a previous work, we have proposed a sub-grid model of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback by taking into account the state-of-the-art AGN physics, and used that model to study the effect of AGN feedback on the evolution of an isolated elliptical galaxy by performing two dimensional high-resolution (i.e., the Bondi radius is well resolved) simulations. In that work, typical values of model parameters were adopted. In the present work, we extend that study by exploring the effects of uncertainties of parameter values. Such a study is also useful for us to understand the respective roles of various components of the model. These parameters include the mass flux and velocity of AGN wind and radiative efficiency in both the hot and cold feedback modes, and the initial black hole (BH) mass. We find that the velocity of AGN wind in the hot mode is the most important quantity to control the typical accretion rate and luminosity of AGN, and the mass growth of the BH. The effect of the wind on star formation is less sensitive. Within the limited parameter range explored in the current work, a stronger AGN wind suppresses star formation within ~100 pc but enhances star formation beyond this radius, while the star formation integrated over the evolution time and the whole galaxy roughly remain unchanged. AGN radiation suppresses the BH accretion in a mild way, but dust is not considered here. Finally, a smaller initial BH mass results in a more violent evolution of the BH accretion rate. The corresponding AGN spends more time in the high-luminosity state and the percentage of BH mass growth is higher. Our results indicate the robustness of AGN feedback in keeping the galaxy quenched.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry and Sivers Function in Large Momentum Effective Theory

We apply recent developments in large momentum effective theory (LaMET) to formulate a non-perturbative calculation of the single-transverse spin asymmetry in terms of the quasi transverse-momentum-dependent quark distribution functions from the so-called Sivers mechanism. When the spin asymmetry is defined as the ratio of the quark Sivers function over the spin averaged distribution, it can be directly calculated in terms of the relevant quasi distributions with the soft functions and perturbative matching kernels cancelling out. Apart from the general formula presented, we have verified the result in the small transverse distance limit at one-loop order, which reduces to a collinear expansion at twist-three level.

Momentum Anisotropy of Leptons from Two Photon Processes in Heavy Ion Collisions

We investigate the azimuthal angular correlation between the lepton transverse momentum $P_\perp$ and the impact parameter $b_\perp$ in non-central heavy-ion collisions, where the leptons are produced through two-photon scattering. Among the Fourier harmonic coefficients, a significant $v_4$ asymmetry is found for the typical kinematics at RHIC and LHC with a mild dependence on the $P_\perp$, whereas $v_2$ is power suppressed by the lepton mass over $P_\perp$. This unique prediction, if confirmed from the experiments, shall provide crucial information on the production mechanism for the dilepton in two-photon processes.

Survey for Trust-aware Recommender Systems: A Deep Learning Perspective

A significant remaining challenge for existing recommender systems is that users may not trust the recommender systems for either lack of explanation or inaccurate recommendation results. Thus, it becomes critical to embrace a trustworthy recommender system. This survey provides a systemic summary of three categories of trust-aware recommender systems: social-aware recommender systems that leverage users' social relationships; robust recommender systems that filter untruthful noises (e.g., spammers and fake information) or enhance attack resistance; explainable recommender systems that provide explanations of recommended items. We focus on the work based on deep learning techniques, an emerging area in the recommendation research.

Discovery of oscillations above 200 keV in a black hole X-ray binary with Insight-HXMT

Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly found in black hole X-ray binaries, and their origin is still under debate. The properties of LFQPOs at high energies (above 30 keV) are closely related to the nature of the accretion flow in the innermost regions, and thus play a crucial role in critically testing various theoretical models. The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) is capable of detecting emissions above 30 keV, and is therefore an ideal instrument to do so. Here we report the discovery of LFQPOs above 200 keV in the new black hole MAXI J1820+070 in the X-ray hard state, which allows us to understand the behaviours of LFQPOs at hundreds of kiloelectronvolts. The phase lag of the LFQPO is constant around zero below 30 keV, and becomes a soft lag (that is, the high-energy photons arrive first) above 30 keV. The soft lag gradually increases with energy and reaches ~0.9s in the 150-200 keV band. The detection at energies above 200 keV, the large soft lag and the energy-related behaviors of the LFQPO pose a great challenge for most currently existing models, but suggest that the LFQPO probably originates from the precession of a small-scale jet.

Transverse spin sum rule of the proton

The transversely-polarized state of a proton with arbitrary momentum is not an eigenstate of transverse angular momentum operator. The latter does not commute with the QCD Hamiltonian. However, the expectation value of the transverse angular momentum in the state is well-defined and grows proportionally to the energy of the particle. The transverse spin content of the proton is analyzed in terms of the QCD angular momentum structure. In particular, we reconfirm that the generalized parton distributions $H+E$ provide transverse orbital angular momentum densities of quarks and gluons in the infinite momentum frame.

Proton spin after 30 years: what we know and what we don't?

More than three decades has passed since the European Muon Collaboration published the first surprising result on the spin structure of the proton. Much theoretical and experimental progress has been made in understanding the origins of the proton spin. In this review, we will discuss what we have learned so far, what are still missing, and what we shall expect to learn from the upcoming experiments including JLab 12 GeV and Electron-Ion Collider. In particular, we focus on first principles calculations and experimental measurements of the total gluon helicity $ΔG$, and quark and gluon orbital angular momenta.

Factorization and its Breaking in Dijet Single Transverse Spin Asymmetries in $pp$ Collisions

We study factorization in single transverse spin asymmetries for dijet production in proton-proton collisions, by considering soft gluon radiation at one-loop order. We show that the associated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization is valid at the leading logarithmic level. At next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, however, we find that soft gluon radiation generates terms in the single transverse spin dependent cross section that differ from those known for the unpolarized case. As a consequence, these terms cannot be organized in terms of a spin independent soft factor in the factorization formula. We present leading logarithmic predictions for the single transverse spin dijet asymmetry for $pp$ collisions at RHIC, based on quark Sivers functions constrained by semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. We hope that our results will contribute to a better understanding of TMD factorization breaking effects at NLL accuracy and beyond.

Dynamical structure factors of a two-dimensional Fermi superfluid within random phase approximation

Based on random phase approximation (RPA), we numerically calculate dynamical structure factors of a balanced two-dimensional (2D) Fermi superfluid, and discuss their energy, momentum and interaction strength dependence in the 2D BEC-BCS crossover. At a small transferred momentum, a stable Higgs mode is observed in the unitary 2D Fermi superfluid gas where the particle-hole symmetry is not satisfied. Stronger interaction strength will make the visibility of the dispersion of Higgs mode harder to be observed. We also discuss the dimension effect and find that the signal of the Higgs mode in two dimension is more obvious than that in 3D case. At a large transferred momentum regime, stronger interaction strength will induce the weight of the molecules excitation increasing, while in verse the atomic one decreasing, which shows the pairing information of Fermi superfluid. The theoretical results qualitatively agree with the corresponding Quantum Monte Carlo data.

Lepton-jet Correlation in Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the lepton-jet correlation in deep inelastic scattering. We perform one-loop calculations for the spin averaged and transverse spin dependent differential cross sections depending on the total transverse momentum of the final state lepton and the jet. The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism is applied to describe the relevant observables. To show the physics reach of this process, we perform a phenomenological study for HERA kinematics and comment on an ongoing analysis of experimental data. In addition, we highlight the potential of this process to constrain small-$x$ dynamics.

MAMO: Memory-Augmented Meta-Optimization for Cold-start Recommendation

A common challenge for most current recommender systems is the cold-start problem. Due to the lack of user-item interactions, the fine-tuned recommender systems are unable to handle situations with new users or new items. Recently, some works introduce the meta-optimization idea into the recommendation scenarios, i.e. predicting the user preference by only a few of past interacted items. The core idea is learning a global sharing initialization parameter for all users and then learning the local parameters for each user separately. However, most meta-learning based recommendation approaches adopt model-agnostic meta-learning for parameter initialization, where the global sharing parameter may lead the model into local optima for some users. In this paper, we design two memory matrices that can store task-specific memories and feature-specific memories. Specifically, the feature-specific memories are used to guide the model with personalized parameter initialization, while the task-specific memories are used to guide the model fast predicting the user preference. And we adopt a meta-optimization approach for optimizing the proposed method. We test the model on two widely used recommendation datasets and consider four cold-start situations. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Lepton Pair Production Through Two Photon Process in Heavy Ion Collisions

This paper investigates the electromagnetic production of lepton pairs with low transverse momentum in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We estimate the initial photons' transverse momentum contributions by employing models where the average transverse momentum squared of the incoming photon can be calculated in the equivalent photon approximation. We further derive an all order QED resummation for the soft photon radiation, which gives an excellent description of the ATLAS data in ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC. For peripheral and central collisions, additional $p_T$-broadening effects from multiple interaction with the medium and the magnetic field contributions from the quark-gluon plasma are also discussed.

Resolving the Nuclear Radio Emission from M32 with Very Large Array

The Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxy M32 hosts one of the nearest and most under-luminous super-massive black holes (SMBHs) ever known, offering a rare opportunity to study the physics of accreting SMBHs at the most quiescent state. Recent Very Large Array (VLA) observations have detected a radio source at the nucleus of M32, which is suggested to be the radio counterpart of the SMBH. To further investigate the radio properties of this nuclear source, we have conducted follow-up, high-resolution VLA observations in four epochs between 2015--2017, each with dual frequencies. At 6 GHz, the nuclear source is resolved under an angular resolution of $\sim$0\farcs4, exhibiting a coreless, slightly lopsided morphology with a detectable extent of $\sim$2.5 \arcsec ($\sim$10 parsec). No significant variability can be found among the four epochs. At 15 GHz, no significant emission can be detected within the same region, pointing to a steep intrinsic radio spectrum (with a 3\,$σ$ upper limit of -1.46 for the spectral index). We discuss possible scenarios for the nature of this nuclear source and conclude that a stellar origin, in particular planetary nebulae, X-ray binaries, supernova remnants or diffuse ionized gas powered by massive stars, can be ruled out.Instead, the observed radio properties can be explained by synchrotron radiation from a hypothetical wind driven by the weakly accreting SMBH.

Large-scale dynamics of winds originated from black hole accretion flows: (I) Hydrodynamics

Winds from black hole accretion flows are ubiquitous. Previous works mainly focus on the launching of wind in the accretion flow scale. It still remains unclear how far the winds can propagate outward and what is their large-scale dynamics. As the first paper of this series, we study the large-scale dynamics of thermal wind beyond accretion scales via analytical and numerical methods. Boundary conditions, which are crucial to our problem, are analyzed and presented based on the small-scale simulations combined with observations of winds. Both black hole and galaxy potential are taken into account. For winds originated from hot accretion flows, we find that the wind can reach to large scales. The radial profiles of velocity, density, and temperature can be approximated by $v_r\approx v_{r0}, ρ\approx ρ_{0}(r/r_0)^{-2}$, and $T\approx T_0 (r/r_0)^{-2(γ-1)}$, where $v_{r0}, ρ_0, T_0$ are the velocity, density, and temperature of winds at the boundary $r_0(\equiv 10^3 r_g)$, $γ$ is the polytropic index. During the outward propagation, the enthalpy and the rotational energy compensate the increase of gravitational potential. For thin disks, we find that because the Bernoulli parameter is smaller, winds cannot propagate as far as the hot winds, but stop at a certain radius where the Bernoulli parameter is equal to the potential energy. Before the winds stop, the profiles of dynamical quantities can also be approximated by the above relations. In this case the rotational energy alone compensates the increase of the potential energy.
