Structural and Chemical Orders in Ni64.5Zr35.5 Metallic Glass by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

The atomic structure of Ni64.5Zr35.5 metallic glass has been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The calculated structure factors from the MD glassy sample at room temperature agree well with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) experimental data. Using the pairwise cluster alignment and clique analysis methods, we show that there are three types dominant short-range order (SRO) motifs around Ni atoms in the glass sample of Ni64.5Zr35.5, i.e., Mixed-Icosahedron(ICO)-Cube, Twined-Cube and icosahedron-like clusters. Furthermore, chemical order and medium-range order (MRO) analysis show that the Mixed-ICO-Cube and Twined-Cube clusters exhibit the characteristics of the crystalline B2 phase. Our simulation results suggest that the weak glass-forming ability (GFA) of Ni64.5Zr35.5 can be attributed to the competition between the glass forming ICO SRO and the crystalline Mixed-ICO-Cube and Twined-Cube motifs.

WiBall: A Time-Reversal Focusing Ball Method for Indoor Tracking

With the development of the Internet of Things technology, indoor tracking has become a popular application nowadays, but most existing solutions can only work in line-of-sight scenarios, or require regular re-calibration. In this paper, we propose WiBall, an accurate and calibration-free indoor tracking system that can work well in non-line-of-sight based on radio signals. WiBall leverages a stationary and location-independent property of the time-reversal focusing effect of radio signals for highly accurate moving distance estimation. Together with the direction estimation based on inertial measurement unit and location correction using the constraints from the floorplan, WiBall is shown to be able to track a moving object with decimeter-level accuracy in different environments. Since WiBall can accommodate a large number of users with only a single pair of devices, it is low-cost and easily scalable, and can be a promising candidate for future indoor tracking applications.

A self-contained algorithm for determination of solid-liquid equilibria in an alloy system

We describe a self-contained procedure to evaluate the free energy of liquid and solid phases of an alloy system. The free energy of a single-element solid phase is calculated with thermodynamic integration using the Einstein crystal as the reference system. Then, free energy difference between the solid and liquid phases is calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integration. The central part of our method is the construction of a reversible alchemical path connecting a pure liquid and a liquid alloy to calculate the mixing enthalpy and entropy. We have applied the method to calculate the free energy of solid and liquid phases in the Al-Sm system. The driving force for fcc-Al nucleation in Al-Sm liquid and the melting curve for fcc-Al and Al3Sm are also calculated.

WiSpeed: A Statistical Electromagnetic Approach for Device-Free Indoor Speed Estimation

Due to the severe multipath effect, no satisfactory device-free methods have ever been found for indoor speed estimation problem, especially in non-line-of-sight scenarios, where the direct path between the source and observer is blocked. In this paper, we present WiSpeed, a universal low-complexity indoor speed estimation system leveraging radio signals, such as commercial WiFi, LTE, 5G, etc., which can work in both device-free and device-based situations. By exploiting the statistical theory of electromagnetic waves, we establish a link between the autocorrelation function of the physical layer channel state information and the speed of a moving object, which lays the foundation of WiSpeed. WiSpeed differs from the other schemes requiring strong line-of-sight conditions between the source and observer in that it embraces the rich-scattering environment typical for indoors to facilitate highly accurate speed estimation. Moreover, as a calibration-free system, WiSpeed saves the users' efforts from large-scale training and fine-tuning of system parameters. In addition, WiSpeed could extract the stride length as well as detect abnormal activities such as falling down, a major threat to seniors that leads to a large number of fatalities every year. Extensive experiments show that WiSpeed achieves a mean absolute percentage error of 4.85% for device-free human walking speed estimation and 4.62% for device-based speed estimation, and a detection rate of 95% without false alarms for fall detection.

New sufficient conditions of signal recovery with tight frames via $l_1$-analysis

The paper discusses the recovery of signals in the case that signals are nearly sparse with respect to a tight frame $D$ by means of the $l_1$-analysis approach. We establish several new sufficient conditions regarding the $D$-restricted isometry property to ensure stable reconstruction of signals that are approximately sparse with respect to $D$. It is shown that if the measurement matrix $Φ$ fulfils the condition $δ_{ts}<t/(4-t)$ for $0<t<4/3$, then signals which are approximately sparse with respect to $D$ can be stably recovered by the $l_1$-analysis method. In the case of $D=I$, the bound is sharp, see Cai and Zhang's work \cite{Cai and Zhang 2014}. When $t=1$, the present bound improves the condition $δ_s<0.307$ from Lin et al.'s reuslt to $δ_s<1/3$.

A sharp sufficient condition of block signal recovery via $l_2/l_1$-minimization

This work gains a sharp sufficient condition on the block restricted isometry property for the recovery of sparse signal. Under the certain assumption, the signal with block structure can be stably recovered in the present of noisy case and the block sparse signal can be exactly reconstructed in the noise-free case. Besides, an example is proposed to exhibit the condition is sharp. As byproduct, when $t=1$, the result improves the bound of block restricted isometry constant $δ_{s|\mathcal{I}}$ in Lin and Li (Acta Math. Sin. Engl. Ser. 29(7): 1401-1412, 2013).

Electric field induced semiconductor-to-metal phase transition in vertical MoTe2 and Mo1-xWxTe2 devices

Over the past years, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted attention as potential building blocks for various electronic applications due to their atomically thin nature. An exciting development is the recent success in 'engineering' crystal phases of TMD compounds during the growth due to their polymorphic character. Here, we report an electric field induced reversible engineered phase transition in vertical 2H-MoTe2 devices, a crucial experimental finding that enables electrical phase switching for these ultra-thin layered materials. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was utilized to analyze the TMD crystalline structure after applying an electric field, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) was employed to map a semiconductor-to-metal phase transition on the nanoscale. In addition, direct confirmation of a phase transition from 2H semiconductor to a distorted 2H' metallic phase was obtained by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). MoTe2 and Mo1-xWxTe2 alloy based vertical resistive random access memory (RRAM) cells were fabricated to demonstrate clear reproducible and controlled switching with programming voltages that are tunable by the layer thickness and that show a distinctly different trend for the binary compound if compared to the ternary materials.

Disjointness preserving $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups and local operators on ordered Banach spaces

We generalize results concerning $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups on Banach lattices to a setting of ordered Banach spaces. We prove that the generator of a disjointness preserving $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroup is local. Some basic properties of local operators are also given. We investigate cases where local operators generate local $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups, by using Taylor series or Yosida approximations. As norms we consider regular norms and show that bands are closed with respect to such norms. Our proofs rely on the theory of embedding pre-Riesz spaces in vector lattices and on corresponding extensions of regular norms.

A Generalized Short Circuit Ratio for Multi-Infeed LCC-HVDC System

The relationship between the short circuit ratio (SCR) and static voltage stability is analyzed in this paper. According to eigenvalue decomposition method, a novel concept named generalized short circuit ratio (gSCR) has been proposed for multi-infeed LCC-HVDC (MIDC) systems to mathematically measure the connect-ed AC strength from the point view of voltage stability, which can overcome the rule-of-thumb basis of existing multi-infeed short circuit ratio (MISCR) concept. In gSCR, two indices, the critical gSCR (CgSCR) and the boundary gSCR (BgSCR) are developed to quantitatively evaluate if the connected AC system is strong or weak, in which CgSCR=2 and BgSCR=3 are two critical values for strength evaluation. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed gSCR concept.

Beam Collimation Using an Anisotropic Metamaterial Slab without Any Nanometer-sized Aperture

Plasmonic beam collimation effect has been thoroughly investigated based on the well-known nanometer-scale bull's eye structure formed by complex and high-cost fabrication processes. In this work, we report our effort for attaining beam collimation using an anisotropic metamaterial (AMM) slab that consists of a stack of alternating metal/dielectric layers and an integrated top metal grating. The results show that AMM slab allows creating the beam collimation effect similar to that of the bull's eye structure, an enabling technology for practical application due to its simple architecture and cost benefits. The excitation of surface plasmons at the AMM/air interface is derived. The structure of the AMM slab and its impact on beaming performance were analyzed using the effective medium theory and Finite Element Method.

Unconventional phase selection in high-driven systems: A complex metastable structure prevails over simple stable phases

Phase selection in deeply undercooled liquids and devitrified glasses during heating involves complex interplay between the barriers to nucleation and the ability for these nuclei to grow. During the devitrification of glassy alloys, complicated metastable structures often precipitate instead of simpler, more stable compounds. Here, we access this unconventional type of phase selections by investigating an Al-10%Sm system, where a complicated cubic structure first precipitates with a large lattice parameter of 1.4 nm. We not only solve the structure of this "big cubic" phase containing ~140 atoms but establish an explicit interconnection between the structural orderings of the amorphous alloy and the cubic phase, which provides a low-barrier nucleation pathway at low temperatures. The surprising rapid growth of the crystal is attributed to its high tolerance to point defects, which minimize the short-scale atomic rearrangements to form the crystal. Our study suggests a new scenario of devitrification, where phase transformation proceeds initially without partitioning through a complex intermediate crystal phase.

A Gene Prediction Method Based on Statistics and Signal Processing

Bioinformatics, as an emerging and rapidly developing interdisciplinary, has become a promising and popular research field in 21st century. Extracting and explaining useful biological information from huge amount of genetic data is an urgent issue in post-genome era. In eukaryotic DNA sequences, gene consists of exons and introns. To predict the location of exons which carry most genetic information accurately has become one of the most essential issues in bioinformatics. Here, we have used biological characteristics of introns to find the candidate initial and final exon sections. Then we select candidate exon sections by using Support Vector Machine (SVM). Next, we predict exon sections accurately based on Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and using three-base periodicity of DNA sequence signals. This paper provides a gene prediction method based on statistics and signal processing and also, the improvement and prospect for this method in the future are discussed.

Crystalline 'Genes' in Metallic Liquids

The underlying structural order that transcends the liquid, glass and crystalline states is identified using an efficient genetic algorithm (GA). GA identifies the most common energetically favorable packing motif in crystalline structures close to the alloy's Al-10 at.% Sm composition. These motifs are in turn compared to the observed packing motifs in the actual liquid structures using a cluster-alignment method which reveals the average topology. Conventional descriptions of the short-range order, such as Voronoi tessellation, are too rigid in their analysis of the configurational poly-types when describing the chemical and topological ordering during transition from undercooled metallic liquids to crystalline phases or glass. Our approach here brings new insight into describing mesoscopic order-disorder transitions in condensed matter physics.

Competition Between Wireless Service Providers: Pricing, Equilibrium and Efficiency

As the communication network is in transition towards a commercial one controlled by service providers (SP), the present paper considers a pricing game in a communication market covered by several wireless access points sharing the same spectrum and analyzes two business models: monopoly (APs controlled by one SP) and oligopoly (APs controlled by different SPs). We use a Stackelberg game to model the problem: SPs are the leader(s) and end users are the followers. We prove, under certain conditions, the existence and uniqueness of Nash equilibrium for both models and derive their expressions. In order to compare the impact of different business models on social welfare and SPs' profits, we define two metrics: PoCS (price of competition on social welfare) and PoCP (price of competition on profits). For symmetric cross-AP interferences, the tight lower bound of PoCS is 3/4, and that of PoCP is 1.

Simulation Study on neutrino nucleus cross section measurement in Segmented Detector at Spallation Neutron Source

Knowledge of $ν_e$-$\mathrm{Fe}/\mathrm{Pb}$ differential cross sections for $ν_e$ energy below several tens of MeV scale is believed to be crucial in understanding Supernova physics. In a segmented detector at Spallation Neutrino Source, $ν_e$ energy reconstructed from the electron range measurement is strongly affected because of both multiple scattering and electromagnetic showers occurring along the electron passage in target materials. In order to estimate the effect, a simulation study has been performed with a cube block model assuming a perfect tracking precision. The distortion of energy spectrum is observed to be proportional to the atomic number of target material. Feasibility of unfolding the distorted $ν_e$ energy spectrum is studied for both Fe and Pb cases. Evaluation of statistical accuracy attainable is therefore provided for a segmented detector.

Non-cooperative Game For Capacity Offload

With the blasting increase of wireless data traffic, incumbent wireless service providers (WSPs) face critical challenges in provisioning spectrum resource. Given the permission of unlicensed access to TV white spaces, WSPs can alleviate their burden by exploiting the concept of "capacity offload" to transfer part of their traffic load to unlicensed spectrum. For such use cases, a central problem is for WSPs to coexist with others, since all of them may access the unlicensed spectrum without coordination thus interfering each other. Game theory provides tools for predicting the behavior of WSPs, and we formulate the coexistence problem under the framework of non-cooperative games as a capacity offload game (COG). We show that a COG always possesses at least one pure-strategy Nash equilibrium (NE), and does not have any mixed-strategy NE. The analysis provides a full characterization of the structure of the NEs in two-player COGs. When the game is played repeatedly and each WSP individually updates its strategy based on its best-response function, the resulting process forms a best-response dynamic. We establish that, for two-player COGs, alternating-move best-response dynamics always converge to an NE, while simultaneous-move best-response dynamics does not always converge to an NE when multiple NEs exist. When there are more than two players in a COG, if the network configuration satisfies certain conditions so that the resulting best-response dynamics become linear, both simultaneous-move and alternating-move best-response dynamics are guaranteed to converge to the unique NE.

Wavelength Shifters for Water Cherenkov Detectors

The light yield of a water-based Cherenkov detector can be significantly improved by adding a wavelength shifter. Wavelength shifter (WLS) molecules absorb ultraviolet photons and re-emit them at longer wavelengths where typical photomultiplier tubes are more sensitive. In this study, several wavelength shifter compounds are tested for possible deployment in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). Test results on optical properties and chemical compatibility for a few WLS candidates are reported; together with timing and gain measurements. A Monte Carlo simulation of the SNO detector response is used to estimate the total light gain with WLS. Finally, a cosmic ray Cherenkov detector was built to investigate the optical properties of WLS.

Single production of the gauge boson $W$ via polarized $e^{-}γ$ collisions in the littlest Higgs model

In the framework of the littlest Higgs($LH$) model, we study single production of the standard model($SM$) gauge boson $W_{s}^{-}$ and the heavy gauge boson $W_{H}^{-}$ via polarized $e^{-}γ$ collisions. We find that the corrections of the $LH$ model to the cross section $σ(W_{s}^{-})$ might be observed only for the scale parameter $f\leq 1.5TeV$ and the mixing parameter $c'\geq 0.4$ in future high energy linear $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider($LC$) experiment with the center-of-mass($CM$) energy $\sqrt{S}=500GeV$ and a yearly integrated luminosity $£=100fb^{-1}$. However, with a suitably chosen polarization of the initial electron and position beams, the possible signals of the heavy gauge boson $W_{H}^{-}$ can be easily detected via $e^{-}γ$ collisions in future $LC$ experiment with $\sqrt{S}=3TeV$ and $£=500fb^{-1}$.
