Image-based retrieval of all-day cloud physical parameters for FY4A/AGRI and its application over the Tibetan Plateau

Satellite remote sensing serves as a crucial means to acquire cloud physical parameters. However, existing official cloud products derived from the advanced geostationary radiation imager (AGRI) onboard the Fengyun-4A geostationary satellite suffer from limitations in computational precision and efficiency. In this study, an image-based transfer learning model (ITLM) was developed to realize all-day and high-precision retrieval of cloud physical parameters using AGRI thermal infrared measurements and auxiliary data. Combining the observation advantages of geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites, ITLM was pre-trained and transfer-trained with official cloud products from advanced Himawari imager (AHI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), respectively. Taking official MODIS products as the benchmarks, ITLM achieved an overall accuracy of 79.93% for identifying cloud phase and root mean squared errors of 1.85 km, 6.72 um, and 12.79 for estimating cloud top height, cloud effective radius, and cloud optical thickness, outperforming the precision of official AGRI and AHI products. Compared to the pixel-based random forest model, ITLM utilized the spatial information of clouds to significantly improve the retrieval performance and achieve more than a 6-fold increase in speed for a single full-disk retrieval. Moreover, the AGRI ITLM products with spatiotemporal continuity and high precision were used to accurately describe the spatial distribution characteristics of cloud fractions and cloud properties over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) during both daytime and nighttime, and for the first time provide insights into the diurnal variation of cloud cover and cloud properties for total clouds and deep convective clouds across different seasons.

Xorbits: Automating Operator Tiling for Distributed Data Science

Data science pipelines commonly utilize dataframe and array operations for tasks such as data preprocessing, analysis, and machine learning. The most popular tools for these tasks are pandas and NumPy. However, these tools are limited to executing on a single node, making them unsuitable for processing large-scale data. Several systems have attempted to distribute data science applications to clusters while maintaining interfaces similar to single-node libraries, enabling data scientists to scale their workloads without significant effort. However, existing systems often struggle with processing large datasets due to Out-of-Memory (OOM) problems caused by poor data partitioning. To overcome these challenges, we develop Xorbits, a high-performance, scalable data science framework specifically designed to distribute data science workloads across clusters while retaining familiar APIs. The key differentiator of Xorbits is its ability to dynamically switch between graph construction and graph execution. Xorbits has been successfully deployed in production environments with up to 5k CPU cores. Its applications span various domains, including user behavior analysis and recommendation systems in the e-commerce sector, as well as credit assessment and risk management in the finance industry. Users can easily scale their data science workloads by simply changing the import line of their pandas and NumPy code. Our experiments demonstrate that Xorbits can effectively process very large datasets without encountering OOM or data-skewing problems. Over the fastest state-of-the-art solutions, Xorbits achieves an impressive 2.66* speedup on average. In terms of API coverage, Xorbits attains a compatibility rate of 96.7%, surpassing the fastest framework by an impressive margin of 60 percentage points. Xorbits is available at https://github.com/xorbitsai/xorbits.

Trinity: Syncretizing Multi-/Long-tail/Long-term Interests All in One

Interest modeling in recommender system has been a constant topic for improving user experience, and typical interest modeling tasks (e.g. multi-interest, long-tail interest and long-term interest) have been investigated in many existing works. However, most of them only consider one interest in isolation, while neglecting their interrelationships. In this paper, we argue that these tasks suffer from a common "interest amnesia" problem, and a solution exists to mitigate it simultaneously. We figure that long-term cues can be the cornerstone since they reveal multi-interest and clarify long-tail interest. Inspired by the observation, we propose a novel and unified framework in the retrieval stage, "Trinity", to solve interest amnesia problem and improve multiple interest modeling tasks. We construct a real-time clustering system that enables us to project items into enumerable clusters, and calculate statistical interest histograms over these clusters. Based on these histograms, Trinity recognizes underdelivered themes and remains stable when facing emerging hot topics. Trinity is more appropriate for large-scale industry scenarios because of its modest computational overheads. Its derived retrievers have been deployed on the recommender system of Douyin, significantly improving user experience and retention. We believe that such practical experience can be well generalized to other scenarios.

HQA-Attack: Toward High Quality Black-Box Hard-Label Adversarial Attack on Text

Black-box hard-label adversarial attack on text is a practical and challenging task, as the text data space is inherently discrete and non-differentiable, and only the predicted label is accessible. Research on this problem is still in the embryonic stage and only a few methods are available. Nevertheless, existing methods rely on the complex heuristic algorithm or unreliable gradient estimation strategy, which probably fall into the local optimum and inevitably consume numerous queries, thus are difficult to craft satisfactory adversarial examples with high semantic similarity and low perturbation rate in a limited query budget. To alleviate above issues, we propose a simple yet effective framework to generate high quality textual adversarial examples under the black-box hard-label attack scenarios, named HQA-Attack. Specifically, after initializing an adversarial example randomly, HQA-attack first constantly substitutes original words back as many as possible, thus shrinking the perturbation rate. Then it leverages the synonym set of the remaining changed words to further optimize the adversarial example with the direction which can improve the semantic similarity and satisfy the adversarial condition simultaneously. In addition, during the optimizing procedure, it searches a transition synonym word for each changed word, thus avoiding traversing the whole synonym set and reducing the query number to some extent. Extensive experimental results on five text classification datasets, three natural language inference datasets and two real-world APIs have shown that the proposed HQA-Attack method outperforms other strong baselines significantly.

Lookup Table meets Local Laplacian Filter: Pyramid Reconstruction Network for Tone Mapping

Tone mapping aims to convert high dynamic range (HDR) images to low dynamic range (LDR) representations, a critical task in the camera imaging pipeline. In recent years, 3-Dimensional LookUp Table (3D LUT) based methods have gained attention due to their ability to strike a favorable balance between enhancement performance and computational efficiency. However, these methods often fail to deliver satisfactory results in local areas since the look-up table is a global operator for tone mapping, which works based on pixel values and fails to incorporate crucial local information. To this end, this paper aims to address this issue by exploring a novel strategy that integrates global and local operators by utilizing closed-form Laplacian pyramid decomposition and reconstruction. Specifically, we employ image-adaptive 3D LUTs to manipulate the tone in the low-frequency image by leveraging the specific characteristics of the frequency information. Furthermore, we utilize local Laplacian filters to refine the edge details in the high-frequency components in an adaptive manner. Local Laplacian filters are widely used to preserve edge details in photographs, but their conventional usage involves manual tuning and fixed implementation within camera imaging pipelines or photo editing tools. We propose to learn parameter value maps progressively for local Laplacian filters from annotated data using a lightweight network. Our model achieves simultaneous global tone manipulation and local edge detail preservation in an end-to-end manner. Extensive experimental results on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods.

The block mutual coherence property condition for signal recovery

Compressed sensing shows that a sparse signal can stably be recovered from incomplete linear measurements. But, in practical applications, some signals have additional structure, where the nonzero elements arise in some blocks. We call such signals as block-sparse signals. In this paper, the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization method for the stable recovery of block-sparse signals is investigated. Sufficient conditions based on block mutual coherence property and associating upper bound estimations of error are established to ensure that block-sparse signals can be stably recovered in the presence of noise via the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization method. For all we know, it is the first block mutual coherence property condition of stably reconstructing block-sparse signals by the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization method. Additionally, the numerical experiments implemented verify the performance of the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization.

Enhancing the Spatial Awareness Capability of Multi-Modal Large Language Model

The Multi-Modal Large Language Model (MLLM) refers to an extension of the Large Language Model (LLM) equipped with the capability to receive and infer multi-modal data. Spatial awareness stands as one of the crucial abilities of MLLM, encompassing diverse skills related to understanding spatial relationships among objects and between objects and the scene area. Industries such as autonomous driving, smart healthcare, robotics, virtual, and augmented reality heavily demand MLLM's spatial awareness capabilities. However, there exists a noticeable gap between the current spatial awareness capabilities of MLLM and the requirements set by human needs. To address this issue, this paper proposes using more precise spatial position information between objects to guide MLLM in providing more accurate responses to user-related inquiries. Specifically, for a particular multi-modal task, we utilize algorithms for acquiring geometric spatial information and scene graphs to obtain relevant geometric spatial information and scene details of objects involved in the query. Subsequently, based on this information, we direct MLLM to address spatial awareness-related queries posed by the user. Extensive experiments were conducted in benchmarks such as MME, MM-Vet, and other multi-modal large language models. The experimental results thoroughly confirm the efficacy of the proposed method in enhancing the spatial awareness tasks and associated tasks of MLLM.

FuXi: A cascade machine learning forecasting system for 15-day global weather forecast

Over the past few years, due to the rapid development of machine learning (ML) models for weather forecasting, state-of-the-art ML models have shown superior performance compared to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)'s high-resolution forecast (HRES) in 10-day forecasts at a spatial resolution of 0.25 degree. However, the challenge remains to perform comparably to the ECMWF ensemble mean (EM) in 15-day forecasts. Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of mitigating the accumulation of forecast errors for effective long-term forecasts. Despite numerous efforts to reduce accumulation errors, including autoregressive multi-time step loss, using a single model is found to be insufficient to achieve optimal performance in both short and long lead times. Therefore, we present FuXi, a cascaded ML weather forecasting system that provides 15-day global forecasts with a temporal resolution of 6 hours and a spatial resolution of 0.25 degree. FuXi is developed using 39 years of the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis dataset. The performance evaluation, based on latitude-weighted root mean square error (RMSE) and anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC), demonstrates that FuXi has comparable forecast performance to ECMWF EM in 15-day forecasts, making FuXi the first ML-based weather forecasting system to accomplish this achievement.

Enhancing the machine vision performance with multi-spectral light sources

This study mainly focuses on the performance of different multi-spectral light sources on different object colors in machine vision and tries to enhance machine vision with multi-spectral light sources. Using different color pencils as samples, by recognizing the collected images with two classical neural networks, AlexNet and VGG19, the performance was investigated under 35 different multi-spectral light sources. The results show that for both models there are always some non-pure white light sources, whose accuracy is better than pure white light, which suggests the potential of multi-spectral light sources to further enhance the effectiveness of machine vision. The comparison of both models is also performed, and surprised to find that the overall performance of VGG19 is lower than that of AlexNet, which shows that the importance of the choice of multi-spectral light sources and models.

Unveiling the effect of Ni on the formation and structure of Earth's inner core

Ni is the second most abundant element in the Earth's core. Yet, its effects on the inner core's structure and formation process are usually disregarded because of its electronic and size similarity with Fe. Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we find that the bcc phase can spontaneously crystallize in liquid Ni at temperatures above Fe's melting point at inner core pressures. The melting temperature of Ni is shown to be 700-800 K higher than that of Fe at 323-360 GPa. hcp, bcc, and liquid phase relation differ for Fe and Ni. Ni can be a bcc stabilizer for Fe at high temperatures and inner core pressures. A small amount of Ni can accelerate Fe's crystallization at core pressures. These results suggest Ni may substantially impact the structure and formation process of the solid inner core.

Prediction of superconductivity in metallic boron-carbon compounds from 0 to 100 GPa by high-throughput screening

Boron carbon compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. In our earlier paper [Zheng et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 014508 (2023)], we identified a new conventional superconductor of LiB3C at 100 GPa. Here, we aim to extend the investigation of possible superconductivity in this structural framework by replacing Li atoms with 27 different cations under pressures ranging from 0 to 100 GPa. Using the high-throughput screening method of zone-center electron-phonon interaction, we find that ternary compounds like CaB3C, SrB3C, TiB3C, and VB3C are promising candidates for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm that they have Tc < 31 K at moderate pressures. Our study demonstrates that fast screening of superconductivity by calculating zone-center electron-phonon coupling strength is an effective strategy for high-throughput identification of new superconductors.

Enhancing Subtask Performance of Multi-modal Large Language Model

Multi-modal Large Language Model (MLLM) refers to a model expanded from a Large Language Model (LLM) that possesses the capability to handle and infer multi-modal data. Current MLLMs typically begin by using LLMs to decompose tasks into multiple subtasks, then employing individual pre-trained models to complete specific subtasks, and ultimately utilizing LLMs to integrate the results of each subtasks to obtain the results of the task. In real-world scenarios, when dealing with large projects, it is common practice to break down the project into smaller sub-projects, with different teams providing corresponding solutions or results. The project owner then decides which solution or result to use, ensuring the best possible outcome for each subtask and, consequently, for the entire project. Inspired by this, this study considers selecting multiple pre-trained models to complete the same subtask. By combining the results from multiple pre-trained models, the optimal subtask result is obtained, enhancing the performance of the MLLM. Specifically, this study first selects multiple pre-trained models focused on the same subtask based on distinct evaluation approaches, and then invokes these models in parallel to process input data and generate corresponding subtask results. Finally, the results from multiple pre-trained models for the same subtask are compared using the LLM, and the best result is chosen as the outcome for that subtask. Extensive experiments are conducted in this study using GPT-4 annotated datasets and human-annotated datasets. The results of various evaluation metrics adequately demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in this paper.

Ab-initio Simulations of Coherent Phonon-Induced Pumping of Carriers in Zirconium Pentatelluride

Laser-driven coherent phonons can act as modulated strain fields and modify the adiabatic ground state topology of quantum materials. Here we use time-dependent first-principles and effective model calculations to simulate the effect of the coherent phonon induced by strong terahertz electric field on electronic carriers in the topological insulator ZrTe$_5$. We show that a coherent $A_\text{1g}$ Raman mode modulation can effectively pump carriers across the band gap, even though the phonon energy is about an order of magnitude smaller than the equilibrium band gap. We reveal the microscopic mechanism of this effect which occurs via Landau-Zener-Stückelberg tunneling of Bloch electrons in a narrow region in the Brillouin zone center where the transient energy gap closes when the system switches from strong to weak topological insulator. The quantum dynamics simulation results are in excellent agreement with recent pump-probe experiments in ZrTe$_5$ at low temperature.

Towards General Low-Light Raw Noise Synthesis and Modeling

Modeling and synthesizing low-light raw noise is a fundamental problem for computational photography and image processing applications. Although most recent works have adopted physics-based models to synthesize noise, the signal-independent noise in low-light conditions is far more complicated and varies dramatically across camera sensors, which is beyond the description of these models. To address this issue, we introduce a new perspective to synthesize the signal-independent noise by a generative model. Specifically, we synthesize the signal-dependent and signal-independent noise in a physics- and learning-based manner, respectively. In this way, our method can be considered as a general model, that is, it can simultaneously learn different noise characteristics for different ISO levels and generalize to various sensors. Subsequently, we present an effective multi-scale discriminator termed Fourier transformer discriminator (FTD) to distinguish the noise distribution accurately. Additionally, we collect a new low-light raw denoising (LRD) dataset for training and benchmarking. Qualitative validation shows that the noise generated by our proposed noise model can be highly similar to the real noise in terms of distribution. Furthermore, extensive denoising experiments demonstrate that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods on different sensors.

Enhancing Cell Proliferation and Migration by MIR-Carbonyl Vibrational Coupling: Insights from Transcriptome Profiling

Cell proliferation and migration highly relate to normal tissue self-healing, therefore it is highly significant for artificial controlling. Recently, vibrational strong coupling between biomolecules and Mid-infrared (MIR) light photons has been successfully used to modify in vitro bioreactions, neuronal signaling and even animal behavior. However, the synergistic effects from molecules to cells remains unclear, and the regulation of MIR on cells needs to be explained from the molecular level. Herein, the proliferation rate and migration capacity of fibroblasts were increased by 156% and 162.5%, respectively, by vibratory coupling of 5.6 micrometers photons with carbonyl groups in biomolecules. Through transcriptome sequencing analysis, the regulatory mechanism of infrared light in 5.6 micrometers was explained from the level of signal pathway and cell components. 5.6 micrometers optical high power lasers can regulate cell function through vibrational strong coupling while minimizing photothermal damage. This work not only sheds light on the non-thermal effect on MIR light-based on wound healing, but also provides new evidence to future frequency medicine.

Effect of nitrogen doping and pressure on the stability of LuH$_3$

The report on the near-ambient superconductivity in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride has stimulated great interest in this material (Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. 2023). While its superconductivity is still a subject of debate, the structure of the claimed cubic phase remains uncertain. In this work, we study the effect of nitrogen doping and pressure on the energetic and dynamic stability of cubic LuH3. Our findings indicate that both pressure and nitrogen doping can enhance the stability of the cubic LuH3 phase. We propose a Lu8H21N structure that exhibits stable phonon, reasonable thermodynamic stability at 1 GPa, and a similar XRD pattern to the experimental data. However, we do not observe electron-phonon coupling in the zone-center phonon modes of these crystal structures.

Reconstructing Three-decade Global Fine-Grained Nighttime Light Observations by a New Super-Resolution Framework

Satellite-collected nighttime light provides a unique perspective on human activities, including urbanization, population growth, and epidemics. Yet, long-term and fine-grained nighttime light observations are lacking, leaving the analysis and applications of decades of light changes in urban facilities undeveloped. To fill this gap, we developed an innovative framework and used it to design a new super-resolution model that reconstructs low-resolution nighttime light data into high resolution. The validation of one billion data points shows that the correlation coefficient of our model at the global scale reaches 0.873, which is significantly higher than that of other existing models (maximum = 0.713). Our model also outperforms existing models at the national and urban scales. Furthermore, through an inspection of airports and roads, only our model's image details can reveal the historical development of these facilities. We provide the long-term and fine-grained nighttime light observations to promote research on human activities. The dataset is available at \url{https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7859205}.
